Who Is This Coming Up From The Wilderness | 아/Song 3:1~11

1 All night long on my bed
I looked for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
2 I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
3 The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.
“Have you seen the one my heart loves?”
4 Scarcely had I passed them
when I found the one my heart loves.
I held him and would not let him go
till I had brought him to my mother’s house,
to the room of the one who conceived me.
5 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and by the does of the field:
Do not arouse or awaken love
until it so desires.
6 Who is this coming up from the wilderness
like a column of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh and incense
made from all the spices of the merchant?
7 Look! It is Solomon’s carriage,
escorted by sixty warriors,
the noblest of Israel,
8 all of them wearing the sword,
all experienced in battle,
each with his sword at his side,
prepared for the terrors of the night.
9 King Solomon made for himself the carriage;
he made it of wood from Lebanon.
10 Its posts he made of silver,
its base of gold.
Its seat was upholstered with purple,
its interior inlaid with love.
Daughters of Jerusalem, 11 come out,
and look, you daughters of Zion.
Look on King Solomon wearing a crown,
the crown with which his mother crowned him
on the day of his wedding,
the day his heart rejoiced.
Song of Songs was one of the most controversial books regarding its place in the biblical canon, raising doubts about whether it could truly be included in the Bible. Around the 1st century, when it was formally recognized as canonical amid ongoing debate, the great Rabbi Akiva insisted on its canonical authority by highlighting its supreme excellence.
Part of what makes Song of Songs feel somewhat uncomfortable is its vivid, sensual, and striking descriptions of love between a man and a woman. For this reason, Christianity interpreted the book solely in an allegorical or metaphorical sense for centuries. A similar yet distinct approach is typological interpretation, which understands the text as representing the love between Christ the Bridegroom and the Believer as His Bride, or the love between Yahweh and Israel. The distinction between the two lies in the fact that allegorical interpretation disregards historical and factual basis in favor of purely spiritual and metaphorical meaning, whereas typological interpretation accepts the Old Testament text itself as an actual, historical reality before making its connection.
Another approach is the dramatic interpretation. Popularized by the 19th-century commentator Franz Delitzsch, this method builds upon the stance of the early Church Father Origen, reading Song of Songs as a dramatic work. Reading through it, I too have often thought that it could easily be adapted into an opera or a musical.
While Song of Songs was long interpreted purely spiritually or typologically as the love between God and His believers, interpreters from the mid-19th century onward began to read and understand it as a celebration of romantic love between a man and a woman—a gift bestowed by God. This makes it an especially vital book for today’s culture, where sex is often idolized and placed above God. We must recognize that neither obsessing over sex nor viewing it as inherently sinful aligns with God's will. Although the name of God appears only once—as "Yahweh" in Song of Solomon 8:6—the book presents a balanced view of romantic love, marriage, and relationships.
The text itself identifies Solomon as its author. This is why many English Bibles title it the Song of Solomon. However, in Hebrew it is Shir HaShirim, in Greek Asma Asmaton, and in Latin Canticum Canticorum—all of which carry the exact same meaning. Translated literally into English, these titles mean "Song of Songs," or the ultimate song among songs.
The structure of the book moves through four phases: the beginning of love, its fruition, a crisis, and its ultimate completion. Today’s passage corresponds to the phase of fruition. To understand Song of Songs clearly, it helps to pay close attention to who is speaking at any given moment.

If You Seek, You Will Find (Verses 1–5)
The Shulammite woman wakes up in the middle of the night and looks for her beloved on her bed, but cannot find him. Rather than giving up, she wanders through the city of Jerusalem, searching through the streets and squares for the one her heart loves, yet she still does not find him. She encounters the watchmen patrolling the city and asks if they have seen King Solomon, but they have not. Shortly after leaving them, she finally finds the King. Holding him tightly, she leads him to her mother's house—into the room of her conception. She then adjures the daughters of Jerusalem not to disturb or awaken love until it so desires.
This passage reveals the heart of the Shulammite woman, who loves Solomon deeply. From her song, we can draw several key spiritual lessons:
Eagerly Seeking the Bridegroom: Believers, as the bride, must continually seek Jesus, the Bridegroom. The verb "to seek" appears five times in the first two verses, reflecting the intensity of her pursuit. This aligns with Jeremiah 29:13 ("You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart") and Jesus' words in Matthew 7:7–8 to ask, seek, and knock. The spiritual life involves seeking the Lord with all our heart and mind, trusting His promise that those who seek will find Him.
Persisting Until He Is Found: The Shulammite woman searches everywhere—her room, the city streets, the broad avenues—and inquires of the watchmen until she finally finds him. We are called to seek the Lord with the same relentless persistence.
Exercising Care and Patience in Love: True love requires patience and discretion before reaching full fruition. If public gossip were to arise among the women of Jerusalem, it could act like the "little foxes" that ruin the vineyard, allowing spiritual distraction or interference. Genuine love respects and waits for the right time and rhythm of the beloved.

Who Is This Coming Up Out of the Wilderness? (Verses 6–11)
Finally, the love between the Shulammite woman and King Solomon comes to fruition. Who is this coming up out of the wilderness like a column of smoke, perfumed with spices? It is Solomon coming to take the Shulammite woman as his bride, accompanied by sixty royal guards. These guards are valiant warriors skilled in battle, and the palanquin is of the highest quality—crafted from the wood of Lebanon, with pillars of silver, a floor of gold, and an interior lovingly fitted out with purple tapestry by the daughters of Jerusalem. She proudly boasts of her bridegroom, Solomon.
In the same way, Christ, our Bridegroom, loves and protects the Church—His bride—and receives us unto Himself. Likewise, as believers who make up His bride, we are called to devote ourselves to the work of Christ, our Bridegroom. In this text, that devotion is pictured through the daughters of Jerusalem adorning the palanquin. We ought to serve Christ, our crowned Bridegroom, with total dedication and delight in the privilege of being His bride. This is the true calling of every believer.

Let us summarize this message through two distinct lenses:
First, from the perspective of human relationships between husband and wife:
Spouses must genuinely cherish and love one another, constantly pursuing each other's hearts. They must guard against gossip, hurtful words, and anything else that might threaten their love. Furthermore, they must respect one another, patiently waiting until love arises willingly from a willing heart.
Second, from the perspective of the relationship between Jesus, the Bridegroom, and believers, His bride:
Believers must continually seek Christ. When we seek Him, we are guaranteed to find and meet Him. We must never give up our search for the Lord, and we must wait faithfully for His timing. Rather than acting startled or anxious like timid deer or gazelles, we need to quietly abide and await His decisions and His perfect timing. When we do, that love will surely bear rich fruit.
