The King Is God’s Representative | 대상/1Chron 29:20~30

20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers; they bowed down, prostrating themselves before the Lord and the king.
Solomon Acknowledged as King
21 The next day they made sacrifices to the Lord and presented burnt offerings to him: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 They ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the Lord that day.
Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the Lord to be ruler and Zadok to be priest. 23 So Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officers and warriors, as well as all of King David’s sons, pledged their submission to King Solomon.
25 The Lord highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor such as no king over Israel ever had before.
The Death of David
26 David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. 27 He ruled over Israel forty years—seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. 28 He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king.
29 As for the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer, the records of Nathan the prophet and the records of Gad the seer, 30 together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands.
When Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem to keep His final Passover, the people cheered, waved palm branches, and shouted, “Hosanna, save us now!” At that time, Jesus entered riding on a young donkey. Now, if that young donkey had thought the people’s loud cheers were meant for itself, its life would have been over. On the other hand, if the young donkey wondered, “Who in the world is this person I am carrying?” and was curious about Him, considering it an honor to carry Him, then the donkey’s life was a success and a flourishing life.
All human lives are like the donkey carrying Jesus. This is true whether one believes in Jesus or not. If someone thinks that their success or the praise they receive from others is entirely because of themselves, that life is a failed life, a ruined life, and a life heading for eternal punishment. Conversely, if one realizes that everything is because of Jesus, giving thanks and glory to Him, that life is a successful life, a meaningful life, and a life that reaches salvation.

God’s Representative: The King (vv. 20–25)
After completing preparations for building the temple, reorganizing the priestly and Levitical systems, setting up the military and administrative structures, offering devotion and gifts for the temple construction, and offering prayers of praise and thanks, David leads all the people in offering sacrifices of thanksgiving and holding a festival before God. He then conducts the coronation ceremonies for Solomon, who succeeds him as king of Israel, and Zadok as priest.
In obedience to David’s command to bless the Lord, the whole assembly blesses the Lord God. They bow their heads and prostrate themselves before the Lord and before David, the king. Bowing to the Lord is natural, but what does bowing to King David signify? The people bowed to David because they recognized that King David was the representative of the Lord God, the true King of Israel. David and God stand along the same line.
Therefore, loving David is loving the Lord God. Bowing to David is bowing to the Lord God. This concept connects to the meaning of "the throne of the Lord" given by God to Solomon following David (v. 23a). A literal translation of the Hebrew text is "sat on the throne of the Lord." Sitting on the throne in place of the Lord God—the true King—David and Solomon were meant to rule Israel according to God's will. That was the mission and role a king was expected to obey and keep.
On this joyful day, David offers a thousand burnt offerings to God. "A thousand burnt offerings" does not mean offering sacrifices a thousand separate times, but refers to the quantity of the offerings. He offered a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs—so should we call it three thousand offerings? Furthermore, he offered drink offerings, pouring wine over the burnt offerings. He also offered peace offerings for Israel. A peace offering is a sacrifice where the people are permitted to eat the sacrifice after the ritual.
They worshiped God, and a festival for all the people began. Eating and drinking before the Lord meant that they offered peace sacrifices and rejoiced in the presence of God (v. 22). This is true fellowship and a picture of the heavenly banquet. Fundamentally, the church should pursue worship filled with such joy and blessed fellowship.
Meanwhile, although Solomon had already been proclaimed king, a coronation ceremony with anointing is held once more in today’s text. Zadok the priest is also anointed again. This officially solidifies the positions of Solomon and Zadok once more. Today’s text in verses 23–25 records Solomon’s ascension to the throne as though it took place without any difficulty.
However, looking at the first part of 1 Kings, we see that there was a fierce struggle for the throne. Adonijah, David’s fourth son, conspired with Joab, the commander of David’s army, and Abiathar the priest, attempting to make himself king. In response, Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba approached David and urged him to designate Solomon as king. As he had covenanted with Bathsheba, David reappointed Solomon as king and commanded Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the military commander to place Solomon on his own mule, go down to the Gihon Spring to anoint him king, and march back into the city blowing trumpets to proclaim his coronation.
Upon learning this later, Adonijah’s faction fled in total panic, barely escaping with their lives. Eventually, however, they were all executed under Solomon’s reign. At that time, Abiathar the priest was banished by Solomon’s order. As a result, the lineage of Ithamar, Aaron’s youngest son—the line of Eli the priest—came to an end as God had prophesied, and the descendants of Zadok, from the lineage of Eleazar (Aaron’s third son), held the office of high priest down to the time of Jesus.
Solomon succeeded his father David as king and prospered (v. 23). In addition, all the leaders, mighty men, and sons of King David pledged allegiance to King Solomon (v. 24), and the Lord bestowed upon him royal majesty far exceeding any king before him (v. 25). What was the secret behind all these blessings? It was the sovereignty of the Lord God. In verses 20–25 of today’s passage, the name "the Lord" appears nine times. This shows that everything is by the grace of the Lord God. A king is God's agent and representative. As long as he stands properly in alignment with God, he enjoys the promised grandeur, blessing, and glory of God. Let us never cross that line.

The Life of David (vv. 26–30)
David, the son of Jesse, rose from being a shepherd to become the king of Israel, reigning 7 years in Hebron and 33 years in Jerusalem. After enjoying wealth and honor, he passed the throne to his son Solomon and died. All the events of his reign are written in the records of Nathan the prophet and Gad the seer, and his deeds are recorded in the official chronicles.
Meanwhile, 1 Samuel 16 introduces David as the eighth son, but in the genealogy of Jesse in 1 Chronicles 2, David is recorded as the seventh son. This apparent discrepancy likely suggests that one of David’s brothers died before marrying and having children. Thus, when compiling the official genealogy, David was listed as the seventh son.

Spiritual Application
The spiritual lesson we draw from today’s passage is this: We are a royal priesthood, serving as God’s representatives in this generation. Therefore, thanks to God, we receive praise; thanks to God, we enjoy glory; and thanks to God, we enjoy blessings through generations.
What should our attitude be? When we become like a donkey that forgets who it is, we will end up like Solomon in his final years. To have a blessed end like David’s, we must never forget who we are. We are representatives acting on God’s behalf in this age. To carry out this holy and glorious calling faithfully, we must pray.
I believe that as long as we do not stray from God’s path and stay firmly aligned with Him, even though trials may come, we will ultimately enjoy the majesty, glory, and blessings granted to Solomon. May we be a people who enjoy these blessings for generations to come.
