11 Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. 12 He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things. 13 He gave him instructions for the divisions of the priests and Levites, and for all the work of serving in the temple of the Lord, as well as for all the articles to be used in its service. 14 He designated the weight of gold for all the gold articles to be used in various kinds of service, and the weight of silver for all the silver articles to be used in various kinds of service: 15 the weight of gold for the gold lampstands and their lamps, with the weight for each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand; 16 the weight of gold for each table for consecrated bread; the weight of silver for the silver tables; 17 the weight of pure gold for the forks, sprinkling bowls and pitchers; the weight of gold for each gold dish; the weight of silver for each silver dish; 18 and the weight of the refined gold for the altar of incense. He also gave him the plan for the chariot, that is, the cherubim of gold that spread their wings and overshadow the ark of the covenant of the Lord.
19 “All this,” David said, “I have in writing as a result of the Lord’s hand on me, and he enabled me to understand all the details of the plan.”
20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished. 21 The divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the temple of God, and every willing person skilled in any craft will help you in all the work. The officials and all the people will obey your every command.”

Introduction
Having completed all preparations for the construction of the temple, David gathers the leaders of Israel together. Before them, David explains why he himself could not build the temple, and then publicly proclaims that his son Solomon is indeed the one whom God has chosen and prepared to build the temple.
David was deeply committed to the construction of the temple, so much so that he prepared all the material and human resources required for it. Yet, as today’s passage reveals, he walked strictly according to God’s will rather than his own zeal. Instead of enforcing his own human desires, he delivered to Solomon strictly what he had received—what God had shown him, without addition or subtraction.
Today’s text reveals to us God’s will being passed down across generations, and we see David faithfully fulfilling his role as a messenger, delivering that divine plan without modification.
Today, I would like to share a message titled: “God's Will Passed Down Across Generations.”

1. A Faithful Messenger Delivering God's Plan (vv. 11–19)
The first thing we learn from David is that we must be faithful messengers who deliver nothing less than the complete will of God.
In verses 11 and 12, David hands over the plans (tavnit) for the temple to Solomon. This word “plan” or “pattern” (tavnit) is the key term in this passage. How does verse 12 describe these plans?
“He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind...”
Indeed: “all that the Spirit had put in his mind.” It refers strictly to everything given directly by the Spirit of God.
We find a remarkably similar scene in the book of Exodus, where God commands Moses on Mount Sinai to build the tabernacle. God tells him in Exodus 25:9:
“Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.”
God Himself showed Moses the model as He spoke. The word translated as “pattern” in Exodus 25:9 is the exact same word used for “plans” (tavnit) in today's passage. Just like Moses, David was not delivering his own thoughts or human agenda. David was passing on to Solomon the exact will of God as he had received it.
Was this limited only to physical structures? No. Verse 13 shows that it included every detail regarding those who would serve in the temple—the divisions of the priests and Levites and all the work of serving in the house of the LORD.
Furthermore, verses 14 through 18 specify the exact weights of gold and silver for all the various articles used in service. How was David able to provide such meticulous, granular detail? The answer is given in verse 19. Let us read verse 19 together:
“‘All this,’ David said, ‘I have in writing from the hand of the LORD upon me, and he made me understand all the details of the plan.’”
“The hand of the LORD” came upon him—divine revelation was imparted to him. The phrase “in writing from the hand of the LORD” evokes the image of the two stone tablets on which God directly inscribed the Ten Commandments. Just as God gave Moses the Law and commandments in a concrete, transmissible form, so He revealed to David the blueprints for the temple in writing through His Spirit. And David delivered them to Solomon without altering a single detail.
The Chronicler deliberately frames this transfer of temple leadership from David to Solomon to mirror the transfer of leadership from Moses to Joshua for the conquest of Canaan.

2. Passing On the God We Have Personally Experienced (vv. 20–21)
Let us look at verse 20. David says to Solomon:
“Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged...”
These words directly echo the commands given to Joshua. “Be strong and courageous” appears throughout Deuteronomy and Joshua; “Do not be afraid or discouraged” comes directly from Joshua; and the promise, “He will not fail you or forsake you,” is quoted directly from Deuteronomy.
By entrusting the construction of the temple to Solomon in this way, David connects this task to the fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant—the taking of the Promised Land. David entrusts God's complete plan to Solomon while offering him deep encouragement.
The core of that encouragement was: “God will be with you.”
Notice that David goes beyond simply stating God will be present; he declares: “He will not fail you or forsake you... until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished.”
What is David saying? “I am entrusting this work to you, but this is God’s work. And God will surely bring it to completion. He will not leave you or forsake you until the work is finished.”
This assurance empowered Solomon to act with strength and courage, providing the absolute confidence he needed to be neither afraid nor discouraged.
How could David encourage Solomon with such overwhelming confidence? We find the secret in how David addresses God. David declares:
“...for the LORD God, my God, is with you.”
To David, Yahweh was not an abstract deity—He was “my God.” David had walked with God throughout his entire life. The God David knew by personal experience was a God who was always present, who never left him, and who never abandoned him.
Because David had personally experienced God’s faithfulness, he could confidently tell the next generation: “The God I have walked with—‘my God’—will now be with you.”
This is the greatest encouragement we can pass on to the next generation.

Conclusion
Philippians 1:6 declares:
“...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
The promise spoken to Abraham, fulfilled through Moses and the next generation under Joshua; the divine purpose revealed through David, fulfilled through the next generation under Solomon—so too, God’s sovereign will spans across generations. The good work God has begun in us will surely be accomplished through us and through the generations that follow.
What then is our duty to the next generation? It is to pass on not our own human ideas, but the exact blueprints of God’s Word given to us. And it is to encourage them with the God we have personally known—the God who has been with us, who has never left us nor forsaken us—assuring them that “my God” will be faithfully present with them as well.
May you live this day as faithful stewards who carry out God's work across generations. I pray this in the name of the Lord. Amen.
