These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.

23 David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less, because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering, and the number was not entered in the book of the annals of King David.

Here is a clear and natural English translation of your text:

One of my favorite pastors is Pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz, who is now in heaven. He was born in 1934 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Raised by devout parents, Pastor Ortiz began traveling throughout Argentina to preach the gospel from the age of 20.

He later gained worldwide renown through his successful ministry at Faith Tabernacle. In 1974, he was invited as a keynote speaker to the Lausanne Congress in Switzerland—a global gathering of evangelical churches—where his sermon titled "Mashed Potato Love" deeply moved many pastors.

Pastor Robert Schuller, then senior pastor of the Crystal Cathedral in Los Angeles, California, was profoundly touched by this sermon and invited Pastor Ortiz to lead the Hispanic ministry at the Crystal Cathedral. Accepting Pastor Schuller’s offer, Pastor Ortiz led a remarkably dynamic and explosive Hispanic ministry in LA.

When I was studying in seminary, he once came as a guest speaker during our chapel service. I had already been deeply moved by his books, so I vividly remember the excitement of hearing Pastor Ortiz preach in person. Though he was in his early 60s at the time, his immense passion while preaching remains fresh in my memory.

He wrote numerous books, the most famous of which is Disciple (Korean title: Are You a Disciple?). The main content of the book is as follows:

We are called to be soldiers, yet inside the actual church, there are no soldiers—only young children. A soldier must obey orders, face dangers, and go out to fight; however, believers in today's church refuse to grow up after being born. Even after many years, these children do not try to feed themselves and constantly expect to be hand-fed. Someone must spoon-feed them, change their diapers, and the moment something displeases them, they cry and throw tantrums. The church ought to be a place that trains Christ's army, but it has turned into a giant, perpetual daycare center.

It was a refreshing shock and a sharp, precise analysis of the modern church.

We Are Called to be Soldiers (vv. 1–15).

This figurative expression originates from Paul, who compares a believer to a good soldier of Christ Jesus (2 Tim 2:3). He states that a soldier's ultimate goal in life is to please the one who enlisted them. In today's passage, David also organizes an army. In essence, Israel is the army of God.

So why do we need a strong army and soldiers? It is for no other reason than to guard our faith in Jehovah, the one true God—that is, the faith that believes Jesus is the Christ. To preserve this faith and pass it down from generation to generation, worship must be maintained to sustain our belief in God. To continue worship, there must be a temple where people gather to worship together. For worship to take place in the temple, there must be leaders such as priests and Levites to lead the service. Beyond that, people are needed to manage the temple, oversee finances, and perform practical work.

However, even if all these conditions are met, if enemies invade, conquer the nation, destroy the temple, and take believers captive, they will be unable to worship even if they desire to do so. Therefore, the most crucial element is a strong army.

We must possess the strength to defend ourselves against external forces so they cannot hinder our faith. David organized 12 divisions of 24,000 men each, rotating monthly to fulfill their military duty. Their commanders were renowned warriors. Who, then, is the enemy for us as modern believers? Is it Islam? Is it the government? No. Our primary enemy is Satan. As Paul stated:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Eph 6:12)

Therefore, to become strong soldiers of Christ, we must put on the full armor of God. Through prayer and the Word, we must take up the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Only then can we safeguard our faith, just as David and his mighty warriors did.

Administrative Leaders (vv. 16–24)

David now appoints administrative leaders for each tribe—representatives of every tribe. This makes total sense: once religious and military leadership structures were established, an administrative organization had to be built to take care of the people's daily lives and welfare. In this way, David proved to be an outstanding king in every respect.

Finally, verses 23 and 24 might seem a bit puzzling. David’s critical sin was taking a census in his later years. As a result, 70,000 people died of a plague overnight under divine judgment, which only stopped when David repented. However, today’s passage almost makes it sound as though God’s wrath was ignited because Joab failed to fully obey David’s command to conduct the census (v. 24). How should we understand this? It gives the impression that the author of Chronicles is recording David's history with a more forgiving lens.

Joab’s disobedience toward King David can be viewed on the same plane as David’s disobedience toward God. Ultimately, the fault lay with David, who disobeyed God, and God was displeased with that disobedience. What we must remember is that sin always carries consequences. In particular, we must bear in mind that when a leader commits a sin, not only does the leader suffer, but the followers also end up bearing the full weight of the damage.

In closing today’s message, I would like us to ask one another a question. Let us turn to the person next to us and ask, "Are you a disciple?" If you are coming out to special early morning prayer services, you are already very close to being a disciple. But even that is not enough. We must become strong soldiers of the Lord. A true disciple of Jesus and a strong soldier of Jesus are synonymous. This era demands powerful warriors of the Lord who are fully equipped with the armor of God. Without it, we cannot win this spiritual war.

My prayer is that our church becomes a spiritual army rather than a spiritual daycare center. Let all generations unite their hearts for this purpose. Let us train together, arm ourselves together, fight together, and stand victorious! If there are brothers or sisters who are weary, let us reach out and raise them up. Let us watch over each other, front and back, as we press forward. As we advance step by step, I believe we will ultimately defeat the forces of evil, the powers of darkness, and Satan, who seek to destroy us, entice us to sin, and cause us to shipwreck our faith. In the end, we will overcome! Hallelujah!
