23 From the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites and the Uzzielites:
24 Shubael, a descendant of Gershom son of Moses, was the official in charge of the treasuries. 25 His relatives through Eliezer: Rehabiah his son, Jeshaiah his son, Joram his son, Zikri his son and Shelomith his son. 26 Shelomith and his relatives were in charge of all the treasuries for the things dedicated by King David, by the heads of families who were the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and by the other army commanders. 27 Some of the plunder taken in battle they dedicated for the repair of the temple of the Lord. 28 And everything dedicated by Samuel the seer and by Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner and Joab son of Zeruiah, and all the other dedicated things were in the care of Shelomith and his relatives.
29 From the Izharites: Kenaniah and his sons were assigned duties away from the temple, as officials and judges over Israel.
30 From the Hebronites: Hashabiah and his relatives—seventeen hundred able men—were responsible in Israel west of the Jordan for all the work of the Lord and for the king’s service. 31 As for the Hebronites, Jeriah was their chief according to the genealogical records of their families. In the fortieth year of David’s reign a search was made in the records, and capable men among the Hebronites were found at Jazer in Gilead. 32 Jeriah had twenty-seven hundred relatives, who were able men and heads of families, and King David put them in charge of the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh for every matter pertaining to God and for the affairs of the king.

One of the YouTube channels I often watch is called "Sherlock Hyunjun." It is run by Hyunjun Yoo—a professor in the Department of Architecture at Hongik University and a graduate of Yonsei University, MIT, and Harvard—and provides explanations and insights regarding architecture and cities. Perhaps because he is a churchgoer, he offers very meaningful insights into church architecture as well, which is what initially drew me to his channel.
He believes and often states that architecture changes the world. Thinking quietly about it, I think he is right. Though we might not always consciously realize it, architecture is deeply intertwined with our daily lives and exerts a significant influence—from our homes and shopping malls to office buildings. In Europe, for instance, beautiful structures built centuries ago continue to generate wealth today.
In any case, looking at beautiful and grand buildings, we often admire them and marvel at their design. Yet, whenever I see such magnificent and dazzling structures, a thought always comes to mind: How does a place like this handle its waste? No matter how beautiful a building is, one thing is certain—it generates trash. In fact, the larger the building, the more waste it produces. Behind that brilliant and beautiful facade lies the work that nobody wants to do.

The Treasuries of the Temple of God and the Treasuries of Dedicated Gifts (vv. 20–28)
The temple of God is no different. While there are visible roles in serving God and attending to the temple—such as leading worship sacrifices and serving in the choir—there are also behind-the-scenes duties that must be done, like organizing and managing the storehouses, as well as collecting and processing taxes.
These are roles that people rarely notice or praise, yet that does not make them any less important. Tasks such as collecting temple taxes and general taxes to sustain ongoing maintenance, or managing the spoils of war, are crucial responsibilities.
Therefore, David entrusted these tasks to the Levites, commanding them to manage everything in an organized manner.
Today’s passage, verses 20 through 28, introduces those put in charge of the temple treasuries and the treasuries of dedicated gifts.
Then, verses 29 through 32 introduce those who handled judicial and administrative duties outside the temple.
Shebuel, a descendant of Moses, was appointed to oversee the unified system comprising both the temple treasuries (which held temple utensils and supplies) and the dedicated treasuries (which stored spoils of war dedicated to God) (v. 24). Underneath him, leaders were designated specifically for each distinct treasury.
First, Jehieli—a descendant of Ladan from the family of Gershon, Levi's firstborn son—was placed in charge of the treasuries of the house of the LORD (v. 20). Next, Shelomoth—the son of Eliezer, who was the son of Moses—was responsible for the treasuries of the dedicated gifts (v. 26).
From David’s reorganization, we can draw two major lessons:
1. David’s Reformative Mindset David formed entirely new structures to encourage and enable service to God's temple. Prime examples include organizing departments for temple and dedicated gift management, establishing choir ministries where none existed before, and anticipating the need for more Levites by lowering their age of service to their twenties.
Five hundred years had passed since the Law of Moses was given, and David instituted timely reforms without compromising the essential spirit of the Law. This embodies the Reformed spirit: continually returning to Scripture.
At the same time, returning to Scripture means interpreting it properly for the present era. This is precisely what Jesus did—the principle of "new wine into new wineskins." The same applies to our church today: we preserve traditional practices that are good and biblical, while reinterpreting and adapting those that are not, aligning them with Scripture for modern times. A clear example of this is the New Testament principle I mentioned last Wednesday: that the entire congregation serves as the choir.
2. No Role in Serving God Is Greater or Lesser Than Another This directly connects to the concept of being members of one body, as taught by Paul. Whether head or foot, heart or hand, every single part is crucial and necessary; not one is expendable. The work of God operates the exact same way. We must realize that importance isn't reserved only for a few "popular" positions of service. We must remember that we are all interconnected members of one body.

Judicial and Administrative Duties (vv. 29–32)
David now reorganizes the systems for duties outside the temple as well. From the descendants of Izhar—the second son of Kohath, who was Levi’s second son—Chenaniah was appointed as an official and judge over Israel for duties outside the temple. Scholars sometimes translate the Hebrew word shoter, rendered here as "official," as "scribe." Regardless, Chenaniah and his sons were put in charge of overseeing all civil matters for ordinary citizens, including administration, justice, and public safety. Under Chenaniah, these duties were divided and managed on both the west and east sides of the Jordan.
From the descendants of Hebron, Kohath’s third son, Hashabiah and his 1,700 capable men were put in charge of governing west of the Jordan—that is, the mainland of Israel in the region of Canaan. Additionally, Jeriah, also from the descendants of Hebron, led 2,700 capable men to govern Transjordan—the region east of the Jordan (the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh).
Interestingly, Transjordan was assigned 1,000 more capable men despite having far fewer tribes. This was likely due to the disadvantageous condition of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh dwelling in relative isolation across the Jordan River.
From today’s passage, we can draw two important lessons:
1. There Are Diverse Roles of Service Within the Temple
Every single position of service is given by God, making it precious, vital, and glorious. The church is no different. There are numerous and varied roles of service; some positions are highly visible, while others remain completely hidden. Yet, when all these roles work together, they build up the unity of Hansarang Church.
2. A Believer’s Sphere of Service Extends into the World
The scope of our service includes not only the temple, but also the world in which we live. Put simply, this speaks not only to ritual worship or worship within church walls, but to the worship of daily life. David did not organize only the religious system; he also carefully structured the civil and social systems. Of course, modern society maintains a separation of church and state so that each fulfills its own role while holding each other in balance. Therefore, as modern-day believers, we must not only worship whole-heartedly in church, but also go out into the world with the gospel to serve as light and salt.
What is the mission God has entrusted to you in the church? What is the mission He has given you in your family? And what is your mission as a member of society? Whatever it may be, we can rest assured that it is God who entrusted it to us, and we must remain fully faithful to that calling. When we do so, I believe both the church and the Kingdom of God will be built up in full strength.
