Those Who Serve in Worship | 대상/1Chron 24:1~31

The Divisions of Priests

1 These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron:

The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2 But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests. 3 With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelek a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed order of ministering. 4 A larger number of leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than among Ithamar’s, and they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of families from Eleazar’s descendants and eight heads of families from Ithamar’s descendants. 5 They divided them impartially by casting lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.

6 The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officials: Zadok the priest, Ahimelek son of Abiathar and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar and then one from Ithamar.

7 The first lot fell to Jehoiarib,

the second to Jedaiah,

8 the third to Harim,

the fourth to Seorim,

9 the fifth to Malkijah,

the sixth to Mijamin,

10 the seventh to Hakkoz,

the eighth to Abijah,

11 the ninth to Jeshua,

the tenth to Shekaniah,

12 the eleventh to Eliashib,

the twelfth to Jakim,

13 the thirteenth to Huppah,

the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

14 the fifteenth to Bilgah,

the sixteenth to Immer,

15 the seventeenth to Hezir,

the eighteenth to Happizzez,

16 the nineteenth to Pethahiah,

the twentieth to Jehezkel,

17 the twenty-first to Jakin,

the twenty-second to Gamul,

18 the twenty-third to Delaiah

and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.

19 This was their appointed order of ministering when they entered the temple of the Lord, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their ancestor Aaron, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

The Rest of the Levites

20 As for the rest of the descendants of Levi:

from the sons of Amram: Shubael;

from the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.

21 As for Rehabiah, from his sons:

Ishiah was the first.

22 From the Izharites: Shelomoth;

from the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.

23 The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.

24 The son of Uzziel: Micah;

from the sons of Micah: Shamir.

25 The brother of Micah: Ishiah;

from the sons of Ishiah: Zechariah.

26 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi.

The son of Jaaziah: Beno.

27 The sons of Merari:

from Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zakkur and Ibri.

28 From Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.

29 From Kish: the son of Kish:

Jerahmeel.

30 And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth.

These were the Levites, according to their families. 31 They also cast lots, just as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did, in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelek, and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest.

David appoints Solomon as his successor and prepares everything so that the people of Israel can carry on their faith. The very first of these preparations was for the construction of the Temple. However, the existence of the Temple alone is not enough for worship to take place; people are needed to serve and lead the worship conducted within it.

Therefore, in Chapter 23—yesterday's passage—David modified the rules to reorganize the structure, lowering the minimum age of service for the Levites from 30 to 20 years old. In today's passage, the Levites are further detailed and divided into priests and regular Levites; each group is organized into 24 divisions by casting lots, allowing them to serve equally without distinction.

The 24 Divisions of Priests (vv. 1–19)

To put it simply, the relationship between priests and Levites is as follows: All Levites perform duties related to God’s temple and its sacrifices, and all priests are Levites. However, not all Levites are priests. The priesthood was a position reserved exclusively for the descendants of Aaron from among the Levites.

Originally, a formal priesthood system did not exist during the Patriarchal era; the patriarchs themselves acted as priests for their own households. It was during the Exodus that God formalized this system through Moses, commanding that the priesthood be passed down through Aaron's lineage.

Aaron had four sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. However, Nadab and Abihu offered unauthorized fire before the Lord and died under divine judgment. Worship is not something we conduct according to our own whims; it must be done in the manner God desires—specifically, in spirit and in truth, through the name of Jesus Christ, who is the Spirit and the Word.

Because Nadab and Abihu had no sons, Eleazar and Ithamar assumed their responsibilities. Yet, as time passed through the period of the Judges, Eli—who belonged to the lineage of Ithamar—became the high priest for reasons that remain unclear. Circumstantially, it appears his family rose to prominence during that era.

As you know, Eli's household eventually faced God's judgment. His lineage gradually declined until the reign of Saul, when Ahimelech (son of Ahitub) and his household were massacred at Nob simply for giving David the consecrated bread and Goliath’s sword. The fact that today’s passage mentions 16 priestly divisions from Eleazar’s lineage and only 8 from Ithamar’s (Eli’s lineage) is largely attributed to this massacre by Saul.

Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, barely escaped the massacre and fled to David. He eventually served as co-high priest alongside Zadok in David’s kingdom. When Abiathar grew old and passed away, his son Ahimelech (sharing the same name as his grandfather) succeeded him as high priest. This explains why verse 3 records that Zadok (from Eleazar's line) and Ahimelech (from Ithamar's line) served together in the priesthood.

Later, during Solomon’s accession to the throne, Abiathar supported Adonijah along with Commander Joab. Zadok, on the other hand, supported Solomon. As a result, the priesthood of Ithamar’s line came to an end, leaving only the line of Zadok. Centuries later, through the Babylonian exile and into the time of Jesus, the Sadducees emerged—the direct descendants of this Zadokite priestly line.

David prevented what could have easily turned into a power struggle by assigning the priestly roles through casting lots—God’s chosen method—so that all were treated equally without distinction (v. 5). This indicates that each lineage jointly provided one high priest to serve together, just as Zadok and Ahimelech did.

The 24 Divisions of Levites (vv. 20–31)

The remaining Levites were also divided into 24 divisions to fulfill their duties, just like the priests. Their assigned tasks are clearly detailed in 1 Chronicles 23:28–32; in short, their responsibility was to assist in everything carried out at the house of the Lord (23:32). To accomplish this, lots were cast in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the priestly and Levitical families, ensuring that the duties were distributed fairly (v. 31).

Just like the priesthood, the Levites were given equal opportunity to serve God through the casting of lots, without any distinction or discrimination. Once a space was prepared for worshippers to gather, the servants needed to facilitate that worship were organized. Only then could worship function properly.

Applying a text like today’s passage to our lives requires one additional step. It can be framed around a single question: Who are the priests and Levites of our age? David’s era marked a critical turning point as the nation transitioned from the era of the Tabernacle to the era of the Temple. Consequently, David reshaped the framework of worship based on the Scriptures. What, then, should our worship look like today?

Jesus Christ—the true David—has completely transformed the framework of both temple and worship. The Old Testament sacrificial system no longer operates, which means that the Old Testament "software"—the roles of the Levitical priests and Levites—no longer holds its original function. As proof of this shift, our Lord tore the veil of the Sanctuary from top to bottom. New wine must now be poured into new wineskins.

Through Jesus Christ, those of us living in the era of the Holy Spirit—the New Covenant era—have each become God’s priests and Levites. Relying on Jesus, our Eternal High Priest who offered the ultimate, once-for-all sacrifice, we can boldly approach the throne of grace. Our worship today is about entering the Father's presence to enjoy fellowship with Him, empowered by the Holy Spirit and through Jesus Christ.

Nevertheless, the core purpose of the priests' and Levites' service in God's temple remains the same. What was their duty? 1 Chronicles 23:13 explains it clearly:

"Aaron was set apart, he and his sons forever, to consecrate the most holy things, that he should burn incense before the Lord, to minister to Him, and to bless in His name forever." (1 Chron 23:13)

Indeed, this calling remains unchanged. As 21st-century priests, this is our responsibility today. If through Jesus each of us has gained access to God as a priest, we should not merely rejoice in that privilege; we must actively serve God, His worship, and the Church as priests. The same applies to the role of the Levites.

We are the priests and Levites of this generation. How will you serve God, His worship, and His Church today?
