David’s Plans for the Temple

1 David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the divisions in the service of the king, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the warriors and all the brave fighting men.

2 King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my fellow Israelites, my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it. 3 But God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’

4 “Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from my whole family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from the tribe of Judah he chose my family, and from my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. 5 Of all my sons—and the Lord has given me many—he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. 6 He said to me: ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. 7 I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.’

8 “So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever.

9 “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 10 Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.”

The difference in theological perspectives regarding salvation distinguishes Presbyterianism from Methodism. Presbyterians, who follow Calvinism, emphasize unconditional election and the absolute grace of God. Thus, salvation is solely a sovereign work of God, and human beings are entirely incapable of contributing to it. Salvation is received by grace alone. During the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther advocated that salvation is received through sola fide (faith alone), sola scriptura (scripture alone), and sola gratia (grace alone).

On the other hand, Methodism agrees that salvation comes by God's grace, but asserts that there must be works of faith as a human response to that grace. If one has faith, corresponding actions are required. For this reason, Methodists favor the Book of James. However, Martin Luther, who strongly emphasized faith alone, referred to the Book of James as an "epistle of straw."

These two major traditions complement one another. Fundamentally, salvation is received by grace alone; no human action can play a part in it. Nevertheless, it is necessary to confess Jesus with one's lips and prove that faith through actions. We do not live this way in order to earn salvation, but because we are saved, we ought to live according to our faith. As James stated, faith without works is not true faith.

To summarize, salvation comes solely by God's grace. No human deed can influence it; it is not salvation by works. However, faith in Jesus is only meaningful when demonstrated through one's life. Therefore, faith and the works of faith must go together. That is true faith.

Gratitude Even in Refusal (Verses 1–5)

After completing the organization of the temple ministry, the civil administration, the public welfare system, and the military, David summmons his entire cabinet to Jerusalem. He transparently shares with them the divine narrative regarding the construction of the temple.

David felt deeply uncomfortable that while he resided in a palace, God's Ark of the Covenant remained inside a tent. Out of a sincere desire to build a temple to house the Ark of the Covenant, he prepared the materials for its construction.

In verse 2, it is referred to as "the footstool of our God," which denotes the Mercy Seat—the cover of the Ark of the Covenant. Because God's glory continually descended upon the lid of the Ark, it was called the Mercy Seat as the place where grace begins, and it was called God's footstool to signify His presence, where He sits enthroned and rests His feet.

However, God says, "Thank you, but as a warrior who has shed much blood, you cannot build the temple," thus refusing his request. Rejection always causes pain in the human heart. Those who are inwardly unhealthy often react with anger or harbor malicious thoughts of revenge when faced with refusal. How much harder must it be when that rejection comes directly from God?

Yet David discovers gratitude even in God's refusal. Rather than complaining about what was withheld from him, he seeks gratitude by focusing on what he had already been given. He praises God's grace for choosing him out of Judah and from among his father’s household to set him up as king.

Furthermore, he praises God for blessing him with many sons and choosing Solomon among them to succeed him on the throne. God's way of working is truly marvelous. As you know, Solomon was born to Bathsheba, who had been Uriah's wife. God takes even human mistakes and sins, weaves them together, and accomplishes His good work through them. Therefore, even God's refusal becomes a source of gratitude for us.

Temple Construction Continuing to the Next Generation (Verses 6–10)

God declares that He will adopt Solomon as His son and that He Himself will become Solomon’s father. Furthermore, Solomon will build God's temple. This is God's sovereign choice. If Solomon diligently observes God's commandments and laws, his kingdom will be established forever. Now David gives his exhortations.

First, he exhorts the officials and the assembly (v. 8). Specifically, he commands the officials, in the presence of God and the assembly, to pledge to seek and observe all the commandments of the LORD their God. In doing so, God will grant that they enjoy this good land and leave it as an everlasting inheritance to their descendants.

Here, the key conjunction is "then" (or "in doing so"). Covenants always carry conditions; there are terms that both parties must uphold together. This is no different from the Mosaic Covenant, nor is it different from the oaths of blessing and curse that Joshua pronounced at Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim.

The secret to maintaining the blessings given by God is simple: to seek and obey God's Word—meaning to hear, learn, and obey it as commanded. Only then can one continue to enjoy the blessings bestowed.

Next, he exhorts Solomon (v. 9). First, he urges him to know the God of his father. "To know" does not merely mean intellectual understanding; it means to know Him relationally and by experience. Solomon must experience God for himself. The God of David, his father, must now become the God of Solomon.

Once he knows God his Father, he must serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind. Indeed, when one truly comes to know God the Father, this naturally follows. God already searches all hearts and understands every intention and thought. There is no use in pretending to have faith outwardly or hypocritically.

Furthermore, he must keep this in mind: if we seek Him, He will surely be found by us. Conversely, if we forsake Him, He will reject us forever. The crucial word here is "if." The choice is set before us; it is up to us to choose between the curse of Mount Ebal and the blessing of Mount Gerizim.

Finally, David urges Solomon to act courageously, as God has chosen him to build the sanctuary (v. 10). The phrase "take heed" (or "be careful") corresponds to the Hebrew verb ra'ah, whose fundamental meaning is "to see." In this context, it implies gazing deeply with the eyes of the heart, or carefully reflecting and pondering. It is a charge to boldly carry out the mission entrusted to Solomon—namely, the construction of the temple for the next generation.

The Era of the Church

We have now entered the era of the church rather than the era of the temple. Yet, the core essence remains unchanged. The church—specifically the sanctuary as a physical space—is where believers, who form the New Testament church, gather together to seek the LORD. Jesus also promised that if we seek, we will find. Through whatever means necessary, we must guard our faith and pass it down to the next generation. The seeds of prayer we sow today with tears will bear abundant fruit in the near future. Jesus, who met us, will surely meet the next generation as well. He is the one who promised that those who seek will find. When we pray believing in this promise, they will surely meet Him.
