Gifts for Building the Temple

1 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. 2 With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities. 3 Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple: 4 three thousand talents of gold (gold of Ophir) and seven thousand talents of refined silver, for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, 5 for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?”

6 Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king’s work gave willingly. 7 They gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze and a hundred thousand talents of iron. 8 Anyone who had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

Introduction

In yesterday’s passage, David delivered the blueprints for the temple given by God to Solomon. This was a public declaration before all the leaders and the assembly that the task of building the temple was fully entrusted to his son Solomon.

Now, David addresses not just Solomon, but the entire congregation gathered before him:

“As you have seen, God alone has chosen Solomon as the right person for this work. Yet he is young and inexperienced, and the work is great. I have already provided for the house of my God with all my resources. Furthermore, because of my devotion to the house of my God, I now give my personal treasures as well. Now, who then is willing to consecrate himself today to the LORD?”

Inspired by David’s example and challenge, the leaders of the families gave willingly and generously. Seeing the leaders, the people also offered voluntarily with a whole heart. Today’s text records that this voluntary giving brought profound joy to the people and filled King David with overwhelming gladness.

Today, I would like to share a message titled: “Offering Voluntarily to My God Brings Joy.”

1. Devotion to "My God" and Personal Treasure (vv. 1–4)

First, let us examine why David and all the people were able to give so joyfully to God.

In verse 1, David reminds the entire assembly that the task of building the temple is far too immense for Solomon to carry out alone. He declares:

“...the palatial structure is not for man, but for the LORD God.”

The Hebrew word translated here as “palatial structure” or “temple” (birah) is not the word usually used for the temple (hekal or bet YHWH). Rather, it refers to a royal fortress or palace. In other words, this temple was not a palace for human royalty, but the royal palace of God Himself.

David was reminding the congregation that the construction of the temple was a public declaration that Israel belonged entirely to God—and that Yahweh alone, not a human king like David or Solomon, was the true King of Israel. Because the palace was for the LORD God and not for man, every member of God’s kingdom needed to unite and devote all their strength to it.

David demonstrated this truth by first setting an example himself. In verse 2, he declares: “With all my resources I have provided for the house of my God...”

Yet verse 3 reveals something even deeper:

“Besides, in my devotion to the house of my God, I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the house of my God, over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple...”

Notice David's confession: “In my devotion to the house of my God...”

As we saw in chapter 28, David consistently refers to God as “my God”—the God who chose him, delighted in him, established him as king forever, and answered him whenever he sought Him. David longed with all his heart to see the kingship of “my God” revealed to the entire world. To David, the sanctuary was not merely a national project; it was “the house of my God.”

Therefore, beyond the vast national resources he had already prepared as king, David willingly offered his own personal treasures (segullah). These were personal assets accumulated by a monarch for private security. Yet, out of deep devotion to "my God," he gave them away freely.

Fascinatingly, the Hebrew word used here for “personal treasures” (segullah) is the exact same word God used in Exodus 19:5 when He declared that the people of Israel were His “treasured possession.” One who knows that he is God’s treasured possession naturally yields his own earthly treasures back to God.

2. A Willing Heart and the Overflow of Joy (vv. 5–9)

Having set an example, David turns to challenge the assembly in verse 5:

“Now, who then is willing to consecrate himself today to the LORD?”

In the original Hebrew, the phrase translated as “consecrate himself” literally reads: “to fill his hand to the LORD” (le-malle'ot yado layhwah). This is an idiom originally used for consecrating and ordaining priests to set them apart for God's service. David was not merely asking for monetary donations; he was asking the people to dedicate their very lives and set themselves apart for the LORD.

Furthermore, by asking who will do this willingly or freely, David emphasizes that true dedication must flow not from coercion, but from voluntary joy.

There is a profound paradox in “filling one's hand to the LORD.” When we willingly yield what is in our hands to God, our hands do not become empty—rather, they are filled with the true riches of God!

Hearing David’s challenge, the leaders respond first. Verse 6 records: “Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king’s work gave willingly.” Leaders across every sphere—administrative, military, and civil—offered themselves voluntarily with joy. When King David held nothing back, his sacrificial heart overflowed directly into the leaders.

Verses 7 and 8 show the astounding magnitude of their gifts. When leaders willingly yield their personal possessions first, that voluntary commitment moves the hearts of the entire community.

Verse 9 describes the beautiful outcome. Let us read verse 9 together:

“The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD. David the king also rejoiced greatly.”

David gave out of personal devotion to "my God." The leaders gave willingly. And the people gave voluntarily with a whole heart.

The phrase “wholeheartedly” (be-lev shalem) refers to the exact “whole heart and willing mind” that David urged Solomon to have in chapter 28. When the people offered to God with a whole heart, what happened? They overflowed with joy!

Notice that in verse 9 alone, the words for willingly/freely and rejoiced/joy are repeated multiple times. When we give willingly with a whole heart, it becomes a source of deep, lasting joy in our lives—a great joy like the one experienced by David and all Israel.

Conclusion

Offering voluntarily to our God—“my God”—brings unspeakable joy.

David knew full well that he would not live to see the completed temple with his own eyes. Yet he poured all his strength into a work he would not finish himself. He labored faithfully for a harvest he would not personally gather. That is true devotion.

Such devotion was possible because he loved God deeply and longed to see the reality of God's kingdom proclaimed. His selfless sacrifice moved the hearts of the leaders and the people, leading them to give willingly with whole hearts—and filling the entire nation with overwhelming joy.

As we stand before this passage, let us examine our own lives. Rather than waiting for someone else to act, may we be the ones to set off a wave of voluntary devotion. And just as David rejoiced greatly as he sparked that wave, may each of you share in that same profound joy. I pray this in the name of the Lord. Amen.
