David’s Prayer

10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord,

the God of our father Israel,

    from everlasting to everlasting.

11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power

and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,

for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;

you are exalted as head over all.

12 Wealth and honor come from you;

you are the ruler of all things.

In your hands are strength and power

to exalt and give strength to all.

13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,

    and praise your glorious name.

14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. 15 We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. 18 Lord, the God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep these desires and thoughts in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. 19 And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion to keep your commands, statutes and decrees and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided.”

Yesterday, David willingly dedicated himself first to the building of the temple, leading all the leaders and people of Israel to offer their gifts with joy. Today’s passage is a public prayer of dedication offered by David following that moment. It is also David’s final representative prayer recorded only in the books of Chronicles. However, this is not merely a simple prayer of thanksgiving offered after an offering. This is because today’s scripture is not only praise and thanksgiving toward God, but also a confession that God is the owner of everything in this world and everything given to us. They were able to dedicate their offerings precisely because they had the faith that acknowledges God as the owner of all things. Without that faith, our commitment will end up becoming an act of showing off our own merits or sacrifices, rather than a sincere heart toward God. Today, I would like to share the message under the title, "An Honest Heart that Acknowledges God's Ownership."

First, we must acknowledge the absolute sovereignty of God. Through the words in verses 10–12, David confesses that everything belongs to God alone. The timing of this confession is quite remarkable, isn’t it? Wouldn’t you agree that this is the very moment when his own dedication, along with that of everyone else, has reached its peak? Yet David offers no prayer whatsoever concerning their own dedication. Instead, he confesses that God alone is worthy of praise forever. This confession is found in verse 11. Let us read it together:

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.

These words speak of God’s absolute sovereignty over all of creation, declaring that everything in the created world belongs to Him. Verse 12 also confesses that God exercises absolute sovereignty over the human world in which we live—that is, over the realities of our everyday lives. Wealth and honor, authority and power, success and strength—all of these are in God’s hands. God Himself is the rightful owner of all these things.

This is what matters. Rather than focusing on our own dedication, we must recognize God’s absolute sovereignty and acknowledge that He is the Lord and Owner of all things.

It is precisely at such times that we can truly give thanks to God. David expresses his gratitude and praise in verse 14. Let us read it together:

“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.

If everything belongs to God, then our offerings are simply what we return to God from what we have received from Him. Both the reason we are able to give anything to God and the ability to give come from God Himself. In fact, the Korean Revised Version translates the verse as, “We have given you only what we received from your hand.” However, the original Hebrew reads, “We have given to you from your hand.” The Hebrew text does not include the expression “we received.” What does this mean? It means that we have given “from your hand to you.” In other words, we have absolutely no basis for claiming anything as our own. What we think we are giving to God does not actually belong to us. We are simply returning to God what was already His and was always in His hands. When we understand this, we realize that being able to give to God is itself a reason for gratitude—a source of joy and gladness.

Verse 15 reminds the people of who they truly are in the presence of God, their rightful Lord and Owner. It says, “For we are strangers before You, and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope.” When we remember who we truly are before God, we come to understand who the true owner of our lives is. This is the attitude that matters. In verse 17, David says, “I know, my God, that You test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with an honest heart.” It is this honest heart that God seeks. The value of our dedication to God does not lie in the amount of our offering, but rather in the attitude of our hearts. What does this attitude look like? It means acknowledging that everything we offer comes from the Lord and recognizing that God is the owner not only of our possessions but also of our lives.

David prays for this very attitude. First, he prays for the people. In verse 18, he says, “Keep these desires and thoughts forever in the hearts of Your people, and keep their hearts faithful to You.” Then he prays for his son Solomon. In verse 19, he says, “And give my son Solomon wholehearted devotion to keep Your commandments, Your testimonies, and Your statutes, and to do all these things.” Why does he pray for this? Because our hearts are so easily corrupted. Genesis 6:5 describes the human heart this way: “Every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.” From the time of Genesis until today, our hearts have continually sought to make ourselves our own masters. That is why David prayed that the people would understand who God is, recognize who they are before Him, and remember that God alone is the Lord and Master of their lives.

Let me bring this message to a close.

Through David’s prayer today, we have seen what God’s absolute sovereignty means. Under His sovereignty, we cannot claim anything as our own, because everything comes from God. When we understand this, we have no reason to boast about our own merits or sacrifices. Instead, we can give thanks and rejoice in God’s abundant grace, through which He has filled the lives of those of us who once had no hope. Only when we recognize that God is the rightful Lord and Owner of all things can we truly find joy in giving back to Him what belongs to Him. This is precisely the attitude God looks upon. He delights in an honest and sincere heart. May we keep this truth in our hearts and reflect on it always. In the name of the Lord, I pray that each of you will bring joy to God through an honest heart that acknowledges Him as the Lord and Owner of your lives.
