The Levites

1 When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.

2 He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. 3 The Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. 4 David said, “Of these, twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work of the temple of the Lord and six thousand are to be officials and judges. 5 Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the Lord with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose.”

6 David separated the Levites into divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.

Gershonites

These were the heads of the families of Ladan.

10 And the sons of Shimei:

Jahath, Ziza, Jeush and Beriah.

These were the sons of Shimei—four in all.

11 Jahath was the first and Ziza the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; so they were counted as one family with one assignment.

15 The sons of Moses:

Gershom and Eliezer.

16 The descendants of Gershom:

Shubael was the first.

17 The descendants of Eliezer:

Rehabiah was the first.

19 The sons of Hebron:

Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.

20 The sons of Uzziel:

24 These were the descendants of Levi by their families—the heads of families as they were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the Lord. 25 For David had said, “Since the Lord, the God of Israel, has granted rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever, 26 the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service.” 27 According to the last instructions of David, the Levites were counted from those twenty years old or more.

28 The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron’s descendants in the service of the temple of the Lord: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God. 29 They were in charge of the bread set out on the table, the special flour for the grain offerings, the thin loaves made without yeast, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size. 30 They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord. They were to do the same in the evening 31 and whenever burnt offerings were presented to the Lord on the Sabbaths, at the New Moon feasts and at the appointed festivals. They were to serve before the Lord regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them.

32 And so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their relatives the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the temple of the Lord.

After last Sunday passed, early last week on Monday, I ended up getting a stiff neck because I slept in a bad position. But in all my life, I had never experienced it being this severe. Eventually, even the muscles deep inside my neck hurt, making the simple muscle movement of swallowing saliva excruciating.

After leading the Wednesday prayer service, many people told me that my voice had changed. Instinctively trying not to use the painful muscles, my voice came out differently. In the end, I was barely able to recover by taking muscle relaxants and Advil.

Today's text begins with, "When King David was old and advanced in years..." What does it mean to grow old? I simply define growing old as the increasing number of medications one takes. I, too, take blood pressure medication every day. Besides that, there are times when I take allergy medicine and various other medications. While the types and amounts of medication differ from person to person, the fact that we all grow old remains unchanged—after all, even David grew old.

Everyone Grows Old—What Should We Prepare For?

That is why everyone makes plans for their retirement. Especially with the development of medical technology creating an aging society, the issue of retirement preparation has emerged as a crucial topic. Koreans believe that 3.5 million KRW per month is needed to live after retirement, and that at least 2.48 million KRW is essential. However, since the actual amount a retired household can secure is around 2.3 million KRW, there is a significant gap between ideal expectations and reality.

In the case of Americans, the fund they believe is necessary for a comfortable and stable retirement reaches about $1.46 million (approx. 1.9 to 2 billion KRW or more). However, the gap is widening dramatically between the average workers—whose account balances prepared through employer-sponsored 401(k)s or Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) remain under $100,000—and the affluent group accumulating over $10 million. Some people even go so far as to sign up for funeral service plans, buy burial plots, or purchase caskets in advance. In effect, they are preparing not just for retirement, but for after death.

Of course, coming up with these realistic alternatives and measures is very important and necessary. I sincerely pray that the members of our church will be blessed by God like David, so that they will face no hardships in their later years. Yet, we cannot avoid one critical question: If we prepare only these things, have we truly done all our preparation for retirement and beyond?

There is something far more important. That is the need to pass down our faith to the next generation. And if we make the broad concept of passing down faith more concrete, it means teaching them how to worship. In that regard, we must learn from David. To pass on a faith that loves God to the next generation, David completed several tasks before his death.

First is the preparation work for building the Temple (Chapter 22).

If God had only permitted it, David would have built the Temple himself. However, because God did not allow it, he could not build it. Nevertheless, with the heart of building it himself, David prepared everything needed for the construction in great abundance. Although Solomon built the Temple, it was effectively built by David.

The Temple is important for no other reason than worship. Modern society—especially Korean society—seems to have cast building a church or temple as a wrong action driven by thoughtless individuals or religious greed. This is likely because the Korean church previously pursued too much quantitative growth and visible success.

However, in order to gather together and worship, space and a physical location are absolute necessities. There must be a house of worship, a temple. A temple is the place where the hearts and minds of all believers gather toward God and become visibly expressed. As long as human pride, greed, bravado, and extravagance do not enter into it, constructing a temple is a beautiful thing.

David finished all the preparations for building a space—a temple—where the next generation could gather and worship God to their heart's content. This is the true passing down of faith.

We must prepare not only the hardware, but also the software.

Second, what David prepared was re-establishing the Levites who could operate the worship offered in that Temple. David reorganized the Levites. Normally, each tribe counted men twenty years old and above who could participate in battle. However, God commanded that the Levites perform their duties starting from thirty years of age (Numbers 4:3). The reason was that the Tabernacle they were to handle was so vital that He raised the age requirement by more than ten years. They needed to possess both physical strength and experience to move and serve at the Tabernacle.

However, once the era of the Temple arrived, there was no longer a need to carry the Tabernacle around. Now, the Levites simply needed to assist with the essential sacrificial duties of the priests and handle the remaining practical tasks. Therefore, David left instructions in his last will that Levites could serve starting from age twenty, and his descendants carried it out accordingly (v. 27).

For the transmission of faith, David prepared the Temple as a space to gather and worship, and subsequently organized the structure of the Levites (including priests) who could prepare and lead that worship. This is true spiritual legacy.

In modern terms, he prepared the physical space for worship as well as the leaders who could guide and conduct the service. This is the minimum preparation required for worship.

Everyone, how are you making your preparations for retirement and beyond? While we must prepare for practical realities, we need an even more fundamental and essential plan. That is passing down our faith. And passing down faith is nothing other than teaching, demonstrating, and letting the next generation experience our worship. In that regard, it is immeasurably grand to see our children join us for Special Early Morning Prayer services. While coming every day may be difficult, I hope we can bring our children at least on Saturdays. That is because it is the finest path to passing down our faith. Let us, the older generation, complete our retirement preparation by worshipping together with the next generation! This is the best plan for what comes after death, leading all the way to heaven.
