God's Promises Will Surely Be Fulfilled | 대상/1Chron 20:1~8

The Capture of Rabbah
1 In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, Joab led out the armed forces. He laid waste the land of the Ammonites and went to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and left it in ruins. 2 David took the crown from the head of their king—its weight was found to be a talent of gold, and it was set with precious stones—and it was placed on David’s head. He took a great quantity of plunder from the city 3 and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
War With the Philistines
4 In the course of time, war broke out with the Philistines, at Gezer. At that time Sibbekai the Hushathite killed Sippai, one of the descendants of the Rephaites, and the Philistines were subjugated.
5 In another battle with the Philistines, Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod.
6 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha. 7 When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.
8 These were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.
Introduction
Today’s passage marks the conclusion of David’s military campaigns and conquest records that began in chapter 18. In yesterday's text, the Aramean coalition—which had entered the war as mercenaries against Israel—was defeated and brought into subjection to David. In today’s text, the Ammonites, having lost their allies, are finally conquered.
In the book of Samuel, which covers this same conquest of Ammon, another well-known event is woven into the narrative: David’s greatest stain—his adultery with Bathsheba and his orchestrated murder of Uriah.
However, in 1 Chronicles, that story is intentionally omitted. The reason is that this passage does not aim to highlight David’s failure as an individual, but rather focuses on how God sovereignly fulfills the covenant He made with David. In 1 Chronicles 17:10, God declared: “I will subdue all your enemies.” Today’s passage shows us that God’s promise is surely fulfilled beyond human failure or fear.
Today, I would like to share a message titled: “God's Promises Will Surely Be Fulfilled.”

1. Fulfilling the Promise Beyond Human Weakness (vv. 1–3)
First, let us look at verse 1. It begins:
“In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war...”
Those familiar with Scripture will immediately recall the account of David and Bathsheba, for 2 Samuel 11:1 opens with the exact same words: “In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war...”
If the author of Chronicles had intended to erase David’s sin from history, he would have removed these contextual markers altogether. Yet he explicitly included the phrase, “but David remained in Jerusalem,” signaling that while he was well aware of what occurred at that time, he deliberately omitted the story of Bathsheba.
Why? Because rather than shining a spotlight on David’s failure, he wanted to emphasize how God sovereignly fulfills His promise despite human weakness.
Historically, Ammon was an arch-enemy that continually harassed Israel along its eastern border. Descended from Lot’s second daughter, they shared a familial connection with Israel. Yet during the wilderness wanderings, it was Ammon (along with Moab) that hired Balaam to curse Israel. During the period of the Judges, they oppressed Israel for eighteen years before being defeated by Jephthah. In King Saul’s day, they invaded the region east of the Jordan, forcing Saul to issue a national mobilization.
Yet in verse 1, this long-standing enemy falls almost routinely: “Joab led out the armed forces and devastated the land of the Ammonites,” besieging and capturing their capital city, Rabbah.
In verse 2, David entered the city, took the crown set with precious stones from the head of the king of Ammon, and placed it on his own head. This symbolized that Ammon was now brought under David’s complete rule. David took vast amounts of plunder and consigned the populace to forced labor, demonstrating that they were entirely conquered. God's declaration—“I will subdue all your enemies”—was literally fulfilled.

2. Overcoming Long-Standing Fears to Experience Victory (vv. 4–8)
Verses 4 through 8 record battles with the Philistines. This might seem surprising at first, because 1 Chronicles 18:1 already stated: “David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Gath and its surrounding villages...”
This indicates that despite their prior defeat, elements of the Philistines continued to resist. How could they maintain such resistance? The text reveals the source of their confidence in verse 4:
“Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, one of the descendants of the Rephaim, and the Philistines were subdued.”
The word translated here as “descendants of the giant” refers to the Rephaim—an ancient race of formidable warriors in Canaan, such as Og king of Bashan and Goliath. They were giant warriors who had instilled deep-seated terror in Israel for generations. They were the very giants who caused the wilderness generation of spies to lose heart and cry out: “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes.” Because of that fear, that generation failed to enter the Promised Land.
Yet today’s text shows the downfall of not just one, but three descendants of these terrifying Rephaim. Was this simply because Sibbecai, Elhanan, and Jonathan possessed extraordinary military prowess? Verse 8 answers:
“These were descendants of the Rephaim in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.”
This was possible because God delivered even the ancient objects of their fears into their hands! Just as God was with David to bring down Goliath, He was now accomplishing His work through David’s warriors as well.
The record of David’s conquests in chapter 18 opened with David subduing the Philistines, and now chapter 20 concludes with the final defeat of Philistia’s giant warriors. This demonstrates that every one of David’s victories was the ultimate fulfillment of what God had promised.

Conclusion
Today, we have seen that God’s promise is fulfilled beyond David’s personal failure and beyond the deep-seated fears that had plagued His people for generations.
We are all frail and weak. But God is faithful. Despite human frailty and inadequacy, the promise of our faithful God will surely be brought to pass. What immense comfort and hope this truth gives us!
Let us praise the faithfulness of God. May you live out this day filled with joy and hope, holding fast to the trustworthy promises of our God. I pray this in the name of the Lord. Amen.
