David’s Prayer

16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.

18 “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, 19 Lord. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.

20 “There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 21 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.

23 “And now, Lord, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, 24 so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you.

25 “You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26 You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. 27 Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”

Introduction

Today’s passage describes David responding in prayer after hearing the word of God proclaimed through the prophet Nathan. This prayer of David is the very first prayer of a king recorded in the book of Chronicles.

Through this prayer, the post-exilic returnee community was able to see the true meaning of the Davidic kingdom—which could not be seen with physical eyes—and the proper response to God’s promises.

In this prayer, David repeatedly confesses his unworthiness to receive God’s promise. He demonstrates that God’s covenant is based not on human merit, but entirely on God’s grace. Throughout the prayer, he continually refers to himself as “Your servant” and calls Israel “Your people.” David completely lays down his sovereignty as king, acknowledging that God alone is the Sovereign and true King of Israel. This was the real picture of the Davidic kingdom that the returnee community needed to understand.

Interestingly, David not only believes that the King’s promise is being fulfilled, but he also holds fast to that word of promise and prays for its fulfillment. This must have given immense strength to the returnee community—who were confused and discouraged after the fall of the Kingdom of Judah—encouraging them to hold fast to God’s promises and pray.

Today, I would like to share a message titled: “The Right Response to the Word of God.”

1. Thorough Humility Before the Word (vv. 16–19)

First, the right response to the Word of God that we see through David is thorough humility.

In verse 16, after hearing the Davidic Covenant delivered through Nathan, David goes in, sits before the Ark of the LORD, and prays. Though he was king, before God he was simply a worshipper. In God's presence, David humbles himself and asks:

“Who am I, LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?”

How could a humble shepherd boy be brought to sit on such a high throne?

Throughout these words, David repeatedly calls himself “Your servant.” In verse 18, referring to himself in the humble third person, he asks: “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant?” He confesses that he was entirely unworthy of receiving God’s grace; yet God not only raised him up as king, but went even further to promise such overwhelming blessings that he is left speechless before such grace.

In verse 19 he declares:

“O LORD, for the sake of your servant and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.”

Here again, he is simply “Your servant” who has received the LORD's favor. And notice how verse 19 concludes: “...in making known all these great things.”

It was the Word of God that made these things known! God’s plan was hidden, and no human being could uncover it on their own. But God’s Word broke through to reveal His sovereign plan.

2. Realizing Who God Is Through His Word (vv. 20–22)

This brings us to the second point of a right response: God’s Word reveals who God is. Therefore, we must come to understand who God is through His Word.

Verse 20 proclaims this truth. Let us read verse 20 together:

“There is none like you, O LORD, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.”

Do you see David’s confession? “According to all that we have heard with our ears”—meaning that it is through the Word that we come to realize Yahweh alone is the one true God! And it empowers us to confess with our own lips who God truly is.

In verses 21–22, who is the God whom David came to realize? He is the King who redeems His own people. Here, Israel is described not as David's people, but explicitly as God’s people. God Himself goes forth on their behalf, fights their battles, and redeems them. He establishes them as His people forever, and He Himself becomes their God.

This is the reign of God as King. When we hear the Word of God, we come to realize who God truly is.

3. Praying by Holding Fast to the Word (vv. 23–27)

When we realize the Word of God and His kingship, we can hold fast to it in prayer. That is precisely what David does in verse 23:

“And now, O LORD, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken.”

What does this mean? It means God's Word becomes the foundation of our prayers. The promised Word and the kingship of God become the very basis upon which we pray.

This is why we must hear the Word in order to pray. Look at verse 25. Let us read David’s confession together:

“For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you.”

God made him hear the Word. In the original Hebrew text, the phrase translated as “you have revealed to your servant” literally means “You have opened the ear of Your servant.”

The starting point that enables prayer is not human willpower or determination, but God opening our ears! Prayer truly begins when God opens our ears to hear His Word.

Therefore, we must draw even closer to the Word. We must seek to hear it, asking God to open our ears so that we may understand His Word and know who He truly is.

Conclusion

Today we have looked at David’s prayer to learn how we ought to respond to the Word of God.

Before God’s Word, David thoroughly humbled himself and surrendered all sovereignty to God as King. Because of this, he was able to be genuinely thankful and realize how immense God's grace toward him truly was. He also realized who God is through His Word. And by hearing that Word, he received the strength and heart to pray, boldly asking for the fulfillment of God’s promises.

How do you respond to the Word of God? May you remember David's example today, so that whenever you hear the Word, you may offer back prayers of humble thanksgiving and unwavering trust. I pray this in the name of the Lord. Amen.
