Praise the Reign of God, Who Alone Is Great (대상/1Chron 16:23~36)

23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
24 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
25 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his dwelling place.
28 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
30 Tremble before him, all the earth!
The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.
31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
32 Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;
let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
33 Let the trees of the forest sing,
let them sing for joy before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
35 Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior;
gather us and deliver us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name,
and glory in your praise.”
36 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.”
Introduction
Last week, Markers Worship came to Seattle for a worship night and a worship conference, and I was able to attend both the Friday evening service and the Saturday conference. During the gathering, Pastor Nam-gook Kim preached on Hannah's prayer, and to briefly summarize his message:
It was the era of the Judges—a dark period when Israel had no human king, and everyone did what was right in their own eyes. Yet Hannah recognized that God was their true King. That is why her lips proclaimed, for the very first time in Scripture, the divine title “the LORD of Hosts” (Yahweh Sabaoth).
The post-exilic returnee community who first read 1 Chronicles lived in a very similar environment. They had spent 70 years as exiles under the oppression of the Babylonian Empire and its polytheistic culture. Even after returning to their homeland, the deep sense of powerlessness from those long, kingless years surely lingered within them.
Today’s text declares to them that God alone is the Creator and King who rules the entire world. It exhorts them that because this God is the God of their salvation, He alone is worthy to receive their worship.
Today, I would like to share a message titled: “Praise the Reign of God, Who Alone Is Great.”

1. The Great Creator Above All Idols (vv. 23–29)
Verses 23–26 command the whole earth and all nations to praise the LORD and proclaim His salvation day after day. Why? Verse 25 gives the clear reason:
“For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.”
This message was desperately needed by the returnees. The Babylonian Empire where they had lived as captives was a thoroughly polytheistic society. Throughout those long years of exile, they must have constantly wrestled with the question: “Is Yahweh truly greater than these Babylonian gods we see all around us?” The world and their circumstances insisted that Babylon was right.
Yet this text, quoting Psalm 96, declares that it is not so: “For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.”
In verse 26, it directly contrasts “all the gods of the nations” with Yahweh God:
“For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.”
What are “all the gods of the nations”? They are worthless idols—empty, meaningless non-entities made by human hands. They are not gods at all! But what does Scripture say about Yahweh? “The LORD made the heavens.” To say He made the heavens means He is overwhelmingly supreme over any other so-called divine being—He is the one and only Creator. Splendor and majesty are before Him.
The text reveals that their God, Yahweh, is the absolute, supreme, one true God with whom the idols of the nations cannot even be compared. Notice how phrases like “among the nations,” “among all peoples,” “above all gods,” and “all the gods of the nations” recur throughout this passage, emphasizing that Yahweh rules not only the Jewish people, but all nations of the world.
Verses 28–29 echo this truth:
“Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him.”
The command “ascribe” is repeated three times. It is fitting and right for all nations and peoples to attribute glory and power to God. Bringing an offering and coming before Him implies presenting worship, but it also carries the imagery of bringing royal tribute to a supreme King. Thus, God is revealed as the Sovereign King who reigns over all tribes and nations.

2. Creation Rejoices Under His Sovereign Reign (vv. 30–33)
This truth is further declared in verse 31:
“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, ‘The LORD reigns!’”
Verses 30–33 show that the reign of the Creator God extends beyond human nations to encompass all of creation. God’s created order—the heavens and earth, the sea and land, even the trees of the forest—resounds with joy as His sovereignty is proclaimed.
Why do they rejoice? Verse 33 tells us:
“Let the trees of the forest sing, let them shout for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.”
God is the righteous Sovereign and Judge over all creation.

3. Our Good and Faithful Savior (vv. 34–36)
Verses 34–36 bring this song of praise to its climax:
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.”
This is why all creation sings for joy under God’s rule—because His reign is good, and His steadfast love (hesed) endures forever!
Verse 35 reinforces this truth:
“Cry out, ‘Save us, God our Savior; gather us and deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise.’”
Notice that this phrase in verse 35—“Cry out, ‘Save us, God our Savior...’”—is a distinct addition not found in the parallel passage of Psalm 106:47 in the exact same phrasing. It feels like a gentle nudge in the ribs to the post-exilic community reading this book, prompting them: “This is how you ought to pray!”
How are they instructed to address God? “O God our Savior!”
The God who is greater than all gods, the Creator who made the heavens, the One under whose sovereign rule all nations and creation abide—this very God is our God and our salvation!
What then should our response be? “That we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise.” Indeed, as verse 36 declares, we must praise the LORD “from everlasting to everlasting.”

Conclusion
Sometimes, like in the era of the Judges when Hannah lived, or like the imperial age experienced by the returnee community, we too feel as though we are living in dark times where God's reign seems absent.
Yet we must remember: God, who alone is great above all things, reigns not only over us, but over all of creation.
Therefore, we can give thanks. We can praise Him. For our God is good, and He is the God of our salvation. Let us praise this great God. May we praise Him together from everlasting to everlasting! Amen.
