God’s Promise to David
1 After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.”
2 Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.”
3 But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:
4 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. 5 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. 6 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’
7 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. 8 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. 9 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 10 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.
“‘I declare to you that the Lord will build a house for you: 11 When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. 14 I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.’”
15 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
Introduction
David wrestled with a deep concern. While he lived in a magnificent palace of cedar, the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD remained under a humble tent.
Driven by this burden, David desired to build a house for God. Yet God responded with an astonishing message: rather than David building a house for Him, God would instead build a house for David. Before David could ever build anything for God, God first built and established David.
Through this remarkable promise, God poured out His grace not only upon David, but upon all humanity.
Today, I would like to share a message titled: “God's Grace That Precedes Our Devotion.”

1. God’s Delight in David’s Heart (vv. 1–6)
First, let us look at David's heart, which brought great delight to God. David's heart was continually directed toward the LORD. When he remembered the grace of God who had built him a palace of cedar and established him as king, it seemed utterly unthinkable that the throne of the true King—the Ark of the Covenant—was residing under a tent.
When Nathan the prophet heard David’s desire, it sounded so entirely right that he answered without even inquiring of the LORD first: “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.” Seeing the genuine piety in David's heart, Nathan encouraged him to move forward.
However, that very night, the word of God came to Nathan, commanding David not to build a house for Him. As we will see later, God was not rejecting David’s zeal; rather, He was declaring that the timing and initiative of building the temple belonged sovereignly to Him.
God's presence is not confined to a physical building. From the time of the Exodus until that day, God had been moving from tent to tent, dwelling among His people. Moreover, God had never commanded any of the leaders of Israel to build Him a house of cedar.
In these words, there is not a single phrase rebuking David. God delighted in David's heart—a heart that remembered, honored, and sought to glorify Him.

2. The Overflowing Grace Promised to David (vv. 7–13)
We see this divine favor in verses 7 and onward. After restraining David's plan to build a physical house, God reminds David of the grace He had already bestowed upon him. He reminds David that his entire journey—from his humble beginnings in the pasture behind the sheep to his appointment as ruler over Israel—was accomplished by God's sovereign grace. It was not earned by David’s devotion, but granted by God’s unearned favor.
God then declares that He will cut off all of David's enemies and make his name like the name of the great ones of the earth. This promise echoes the covenant made with Abraham in Genesis 12: “I will make your name great.” Just as all families of the earth were blessed through Abraham, so all of God’s people receive blessing through David.
God promises to appoint a place for His people Israel and plant them so they will no longer wander as they did in the wilderness. He promises to protect them from the wicked and cause all enemies to submit to David, unlike during the turbulent era of the Judges.
Up to this point, the blessing is already overwhelming. Yet God adds an even more astounding declaration: “The LORD will build a house for you.”
The word translated as “dynasty” or “house” here is the Hebrew word bayit. David wanted to build a physical house (bayit) for God, but God responds that He will instead build a royal house (bayit) for David—an everlasting dynasty.
God promises that even when David’s days are complete, He will raise up his offspring and establish his kingdom firmly. Verse 13 reveals a profound covenantal relationship: “I will be his father, and he shall be my son.” Even when David is no longer on earth, God Himself will act as the father and guardian of David's descendant. Furthermore, He promises eternal grace: “I will not take my steadfast love from him.”
God’s delight in David’s heart is also evident in verse 12. Although David himself was not permitted to build the temple, God granted his desire by allowing his son to fulfill that sacred task.

3. Eternal Fulfillment in Jesus Christ (v. 14)
God accepted David’s heart and poured out grace far beyond anything he could have imagined. That grace has overflowed through David down to us today.
Verse 14 is particularly striking:
“I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.”
Notice that God does not refer to the kingdom as “David’s kingdom,” but calls it “my house” and “my kingdom.”
As history records, David’s earthly political dynasty eventually fell. Yet when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he proclaimed in Luke 1:32–33:
“The Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David... and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Hallelujah! God's promise of an eternally established throne was completely fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who came as the Son of David. This was not accomplished by anything we have done; it is the sheer, unmerited grace that God poured out upon us first.

Conclusion
David humbly remembered God, who had raised him up as king, and desired to offer whatever he could back to the LORD. God accepted the sincere devotion of his heart and granted him blessings that overflowed beyond measure. Those blessings poured out from David's cup into the lives of all Israel—and through David, that grace has reached even us today.
Jesus, the Son of David, has come to us.
That is what true grace is: God’s sovereign, total blessing poured out first upon those who have done nothing to earn it. Let us give thanks for this complete and perfect grace, and let us praise the God whose grace always precedes our devotion. Amen.
