Others Join David at Hebron

23 These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron to turn Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:

24 from Judah, carrying shield and spear—6,800 armed for battle;

25 from Simeon, warriors ready for battle—7,100;

26 from Levi—4,600, 27 including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, 28 and Zadok, a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;

29 from Benjamin, Saul’s tribe—3,000, most of whom had remained loyal to Saul’s house until then;

30 from Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans—20,800;

31 from half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king—18,000;

32 from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do—200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;

33 from Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty—50,000;

34 from Naphtali—1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;

35 from Dan, ready for battle—28,600;

36 from Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle—40,000;

37 and from east of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon—120,000.

38 All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. 39 The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking, for their families had supplied provisions for them. 40 Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, olive oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

Here is a translation of your passage into English, rendered naturally while preserving the theological nuances and structure of the original text:

In Luke 15, Jesus tells the Parable of the Prodigal Son. In this story, the older brother—who had always remained by his father's side—could not understand the father who threw a feast for the returning prodigal son, his younger brother. Ultimately, he refuses to join in his father's celebration. Seeing this, the father comes out and pleads with him, explaining that everything he has belongs to the older son, but it was only fitting to celebrate and be glad because his brother was dead and is alive again (Luke 15:31–32).

However, looking at the first part of Luke 15, we see the Pharisees complaining when they observe Jesus associating with tax collectors and sinners (Luke 15:1–2). Jesus then begins speaking to them in parables (Luke 15:3), sequentially telling the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the Parable of the Lost Coin, and the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

Therefore, this parable was not actually aimed at the "younger sons"—the tax collectors or prostitutes—but rather at the Pharisees, who were complaining about Jesus spending time with them.

For this reason, the story commonly known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son is also called the Parable of the Two Sons, the Parable of the Lost Son, or the Parable of the Compassionate Father. Pastor Tim Keller even goes so far as to call it The Prodigal God. The core of the story lies in a father who "squanders" everything to find his lost child, and the tragic older son who fails to participate in the feast his father has prepared. The older son, too, was a prodigal—lost inside the house, unable to rejoice together with the father.

According to the Word of the LORD (v. 23–37)

The author of Chronicles records the names of the warriors who roamed the battlefields alongside David from the days when he was a fugitive. He then records the names and numbers of the military commanders and warriors who came to David—now king over Judah and Benjamin in Hebron—to establish him as king over all Israel.

These individuals gathered from across the entire country for a single purpose: to turn the kingdom of Saul over to David according to the word of the LORD (v. 23b). What is critical here is the phrase "according to the word of the LORD." If they had gathered around David simply out of personal preference, it would have been nothing more than a coup against Saul’s dynasty. However, David becoming king over all Israel was the holy will of God.

Meanwhile, these warriors were not merely skilled fighters.

"From the sons of Issachar, those who understood the times and knew what Israel ought to do, two hundred chiefs..." (v. 32)

Here, "understanding the times" does not refer to knowing real estate prices or the market price of fish. It signifies the ability to discern the eras and seasons—the wisdom to distinguish the direction in which God's providence is flowing. Furthermore, once they discerned that flow, it meant knowing what actions they ought to take accordingly. That is why they came to David; they saw that God's will rested upon him.

We, too, must use the Word of God as our standard when discerning value and evaluating our circumstances so that we can read the flow of the times. Only then can we understand the role God has entrusted to us in every situation and process. Therefore, let us all focus even more deeply on God's Word. Let us discern the trends of our times through the lens of Scripture and remain faithful to the mission entrusted to us—just like the warriors who came to David.

Those Unable to Rejoice Together (v. 38–40)

Soldiers and people from every tribe across the entire nation were gathered, rejoicing with one heart as they made David king over all Israel. They shared a unified goal: to set David as king over all Israel, and they earnestly desired and pursued this with one mind (v. 38).

A thriving community shares a common goal and rejoices in it with one heart. Conversely, a struggling community is fragmented by differing agendas, filled with mutual hatred and animosity. There is no need to guess the outcome; it will inevitably yield starkly opposite results.

Meanwhile, food was present at the heart of Israel's joy (v. 39). The reason Jesus was criticized by the Pharisees was that He shared meals with tax collectors and sinners. Eating together signifies becoming part of a household—it means family. In this way, food serves as a medium through which people can rejoice together. Joy overflows when believers fellowship over a shared meal.

However, while enjoying food together is wonderful, there must always be someone who undertakes the labor of preparing it. Everyone loves to eat, but everyone finds preparing the meal to be a burden.

Yet, all of Israel prepared the food with one heart. Even from the distant border regions—Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali—they brought supplies loaded on mules, donkeys, camels, and oxen to prepare the feast.

What was the result? "For there was joy in Israel" (v. 40). As all the people prepared together and ate together, they celebrated David’s coronation for three days. It is hard to imagine any other king receiving such a celebratory reception.

Yet, even in the midst of a feast where the entire nation rejoiced together, there were those who could not participate: the people of Benjamin, the tribe to which Saul belonged (v. 29). Although 3,000 men from the tribe of Benjamin stood with David and joined the celebration, the vast majority still followed the house of Saul. In fact, a man named Shimei refused to acknowledge David as king even into David's later years, hurling curses at him while David fled from Absalom's rebellion (2 Samuel 16:5–8).

Why could they not rejoice together with David?

Because they did not listen to the Word of God, they failed to discern the flow of the times and, as a result, could not realize the path they ought to take as members of Israel. Although they were invited to join in the feast, they remained trapped in their own thoughts and failed to enjoy the grand celebration of joy.

We must train ourselves to evaluate and think about everything according to the Word. In truth, when we approach choices with a pure heart, we can hear the Word speaking to us fully. God's Word has already spoken to us clearly and unmistakably.

Having heard God’s Word in this way, we must now rejoice in His work with one heart, fellowship in one love, and together participate in the heavenly feast overflowing with joy. When we do so, God’s will for us will be beautifully fulfilled through us—just as David was able to become their noble king. Following the Word, let us love one another with one heart and serve our King, Jesus, with joy!

This is the flow of the times that our present age demands.
