How a Nation Is Founded (대상/1Chron 11:10~19)

David’s Mighty Warriors
10 These were the chiefs of David’s mighty warriors—they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised— 11 this is the list of David’s mighty warriors:
Jashobeam, a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.
12 Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors. 13 He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines. 14 But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.
15 Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 16 At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 17 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 18 So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the Lord. 19 “God forbid that I should do this!” he said. “Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?” Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it.
Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.
In Confucianism, there is the concept of Samgang Oryun (Three Bonds and Five Relations)—the three fundamental principles and five moral duties governing human relationships. Among them, the principles and duties regarding the relationship between a sovereign and a subject are as follows:
Gun-wi-shin-gang (君爲臣綱): The sovereign must serve as the standard and central pillar for the subject.
Gun-shin-yu-ui (君臣有義): The duty between a sovereign and a subject is rooted in righteousness and loyalty.
Since monarchies have largely disappeared in modern society, applying these principles directly is impractical. Nevertheless, they impart the fundamental ethics required between top leaders and those who support them in governments, organizations, and all communities. In fact, this spirit is no different from what the Bible teaches.

How a Nation Is Established (v. 10)
There is a saying that a hero is not simply an extraordinary individual, but someone who stands tall by stepping onto the shoulders lent by many. David is a hero of Israel, yet he could not build a nation alone. How, then, can a nation be properly established? This was a vital question for the Israeli community that had returned from the Babylonian exile over a century prior: How can we rebuild and renew our nation?
Faithful Middle Leaders The text introduces the chiefs among David's mighty warriors, noting their crucial role. For a nation to stand, such people are essential—leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens who faithfully carry out their assigned roles according to their gifts and abilities. The author of Chronicles calls them "mighty warriors."
"Together with All Israel" For a nation to stand firm, the leader must present a clear vision, and the people must unite with one heart and mind toward that goal. In this process, these middle leaders connect the hearts of the people with King David. That is the essence of "together"—persuading, helping them understand, and guiding them to move forward as one.
"To Support David" No matter how hard middle leaders work, if they seek to win the people's hearts for themselves, it does more harm than good. They must never forget that their fundamental duty is to support the ultimate authority and top leader, David. Any thriving community unites around its leader. A nation stands firm when there is clear order alongside strong, righteous leadership and authority.
"According to the Word of the Lord" More important than all the previous points combined is acting according to God's word. If a leader exercises strong authority merely to achieve personal desires, that is tyranny. However, when a powerful leader is captivated by the Word of God, the nation is bound to head in the right direction. Therefore, top leaders, middle leaders, and the people must always listen to God's Word. For a nation to stand firm, it must hear and obey the Word of the Lord God.

Righteousness Between Sovereign and Subject: Gun-shin-yu-ui (vv. 11–19)
The author introduces David’s loyal warriors, beginning with the first group known as the "Three Mighty Warriors" (vv. 11–14).
The leader of these three is Jashobeam. However, 2 Samuel 23:8 records his other names: Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite, or Adino the Eznite. According to the author of Samuel, he was a warrior who killed eight hundred men at one time. The second is Eleazar, who stood his ground alone against the Philistines in a field of barley, fighting until his hand froze to his sword. The third warrior is unnamed in today's text, but cross-referencing Samuel identifies him as Shammah. He, too, fought the Philistines single-handedly in a field of lentils, bringing about a great victory for the Lord.
Starting from verse 15, the second group of three warriors appears—their names will be revealed in tomorrow’s text. Their leader is Abishai, David's nephew and Joab's brother. The second is Benaiah, and the third remains unnamed. The author of Chronicles records an astonishing episode involving these three men. It took place when David was crowned king over all Israel, while he was still staying in Hebron before moving the capital to Jerusalem. Upon hearing that David had become king of Israel, the Philistines gathered in the Valley of Rephaim to attack him. David inquired of God, went to battle, and achieved a great victory. When the retreated Philistines advanced into the Valley of Rephaim once more, David inquired of God again. This time, God instructed him to wait in ambush in the balsam trees and launch a surprise attack only when he heard the sound of marching in the tops of the trees. Following this command, David won a resounding victory in both battles, prompting them to name the place Baal-perazim ("Lord of the Outburst" or "Lord Who Breaks Through").
During the war at Baal-perazim, while at his stronghold in Adullam, David remembered the clear, cool water he used to drink from the well of Bethlehem during his youth and muttered to himself, "If only I could drink from it..." It was much like immigrants longing for favorite dishes from back home, such as naengmyeon, sundaeguk, or galbi.
Hearing the king's quiet remark, the second three warriors immediately broke through the enemy lines to draw water from the well. At that time, Bethlehem was occupied by the Philistines. Nevertheless, the three warriors successfully executed their covert mission and brought the well water back to King David. Astounded by their deed, David declared that it was not water, but their very blood. Swearing never to let such a thing happen again, he poured out the water—their lifeblood—as a drink offering before the Lord.

Was drawing that water a waste, then? In Hebrew thought, life resides in the blood, and blood must never be consumed—which is likely why David could not bring himself to drink it. Instead, he presented that precious, blood-like water as an offering to God, entrusting their very lives into the hands of the Lord.
The deep lesson we learn here is what a subject should be and what a king should be. Subjects ought to serve their king with a loyalty that does not spare even their own lives, while a king must never sacrifice his subjects' devotion for personal gain. Yet, the world portrayed on television today feels like a place where such romance and loyalty have completely vanished.
We must maintain loyalty to one another in our respective positions. Our devotion should not be directed toward God alone; within the order He has established, there must be order and love between king and subject, parent and child, and husband and wife. This is true faithfulness to God, and this is true loyalty. Nations, communities, and families are built upon this loyalty rooted in the Word of God. Today, let us continue building the Kingdom of God through loyalty grounded in His Word.
