The Genealogy of Saul

35 Jeiel the father of Gibeon lived in Gibeon.

His wife’s name was Maakah, 36 and his firstborn son was Abdon, followed by Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, 37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah and Mikloth. 38 Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They too lived near their relatives in Jerusalem.

39 Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab and Esh-Baal.

40 The son of Jonathan:

Merib-Baal, who was the father of Micah.

41 The sons of Micah:

Pithon, Melek, Tahrea and Ahaz.

42 Ahaz was the father of Jadah, Jadah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth and Zimri, and Zimri was the father of Moza. 43 Moza was the father of Binea; Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son and Azel his son.

44 Azel had six sons, and these were their names:

Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.

Saul Takes His Life

1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.

4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.”

But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. 6 So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

7 When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.

8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. 10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.

11 When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

13 Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, 14 and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

The Korean saying (패가망신) implies that through an individual's wrongdoing, not only is that person ruined, but their entire family is brought to ruin. The event in today's passage corresponds exactly to this four-character idiom. Due to the fault of one father, Saul, not only Saul himself, but also his three sons, his officials, and all of Israel suffered a disgraceful defeat. The author of Chronicles records: "So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together." (v. 6)

Saul’s Genealogy (v. 35–44)

This section presents Saul’s genealogy, repeating 8:29–38 word-for-word. The reason it is repeated here is that Saul’s final narrative appears in chapter 10. The only kings directly appointed by God were Saul of the tribe of Benjamin and David of the tribe of Judah. For this reason, the author of Chronicles treats Saul’s genealogy with significant weight.

The names of Saul’s sons are mentioned, with his fourth son named Eshbaal (v. 39). It means "man of Baal" or "man of the Lord." Originally, Baal generally meant "master" or "husband." However, as Baal worship gradually spread, it became synonymous with the idol itself.

Consequently, his name was changed to Ish-bosheth, meaning "man of shame" or "shameful one." This was likely because the name Baal had become too disgraceful to use. Following the death of his father Saul in battle, he succeeded him as king of northern Israel.

The same applies to Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth (v. 40). His original name was Merib-baal, which means "Baal contends" or "one who strives with Baal." However, for the same reason as his uncle Ish-bosheth, his name was changed to Mephibosheth.

Total Ruin (Paegamangsin) (v. 1–14)

1 Chronicles 10 is almost identical to 1 Samuel 31:1–13, except for a few words.

Israel flees from the Philistines and is slain on Mount Gilboa. Here, the word translated as "slain" originally means "to pierce" or "to wound," conveying a gruesome image of being fatally wounded and slaughtered. It is a word that symbolically highlights how severe Israel's defeat was (v. 1).

The author of Chronicles records that Saul was pursued by the Philistine archers and was in severe distress (v. 3). However, the author of Samuel records it more specifically: "The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically" (1 Sam. 31:3).

Severely injured, Saul demands that his armor-bearer kill him, refusing to die at the hands of the uncircumcised Philistines. His armor-bearer, however, is terrified to strike the anointed king. Saul then falls on his own sword to end his life (v. 4). Seeing this, his armor-bearer likewise commits suicide with him (v. 5).

Witnessing the deaths of the king and the princes, the Israelites lose all morale and flee, leaving their cities to fall into the hands of the Philistines (v. 7). Fortunately, before long, these cities will be reclaimed by our hero, King David.

Saul mistakenly thought that everything would end with his death. However, the next day, when the barbaric Philistines return to the battlefield to strip the dead, they discover the corpses of Saul and his sons and mutilate them.

After stripping Saul of his clothes and armor, they cut off his head. They send his armor to the temple of Ashtoreth—the goddess of fertility and sex—and hang Saul’s head in the temple of Dagon, the male deity of grain. They send these trophies throughout the land of Philistia to celebrate their victory. That is not all. Saul's headless body, along with the bodies of his sons, is impaled on the wall of Beth-shan. It is a truly miserable end. How could the king of Israel and his house meet such a tragic fate? The author of Chronicles reveals the exact reason:

Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse. (v. 13, 14)

This is the core theology of Chronicles. The consequence of disobeying God's word is overwhelmingly clear. Just as Saul was judged for his disobedience, the author of Chronicles uses Saul's fate as a mirror to show that Israel's 70-year Babylonian exile was likewise the result of their own disobedience. The expression that Saul "did not inquire of the Lord" means nothing less than that he failed to obey the Word given to him. To dissemble without obedience is not truly to inquire of Him.

Mercy in the Midst of Wrath… (v. 11–12)

Meanwhile, one group of people particularly stands out: the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead. They belonged to the half-tribe of Manasseh located east of the Jordan River. According to 1 Samuel 11, when Nahash the Ammonite invaded in the past, Saul had delivered them.

Never forgetting Saul's past kindness, they risked their lives and traveled all night to retrieve the bodies of Saul and his sons. After bringing the corpses back to Jabesh, they cremated them, buried their bones under an oak tree, and fasted for seven days.

According to Scripture, anyone hung on a tree is cursed by God. Had the bodies been left impaled on the city wall, Saul, his sons, and even Jonathan would have remained under God's curse. Yet, thanks to the faithful men of Jabesh-gilead who put their lives on the line for the dead, Saul and his sons were able to find rest. Later, David also commends these people of Jabesh-gilead.

Here, I see the mercy of God. Who would risk their life for those who are already dead? Even though Saul died because of his own sin, God still took pity on Israel's king and princes, moving the hearts of the men of Jabesh-gilead to ensure their remains were cared for with dignity.

As human beings, we ought to possess the same loyalty and faithfulness shown by the people of Jabesh-gilead. The contrast between Saul’s household—brought to total ruin (paegamangsin) through the sin of one father—and the men of Jabesh-gilead, who sought to repay a debt of gratitude even after Saul's death, weighs heavily on the heart. Rather than bringing ruin upon our households, may we live as believers who help others and repay the grace we have received. The same holds true for our devotion to Jesus, who laid down His life for us.
