20260917 [새벽묵상] 여호와께서 함께 하신다는 것은…What It Means That the LORD Is with Us (대상/1Chron 11:1~9)

David Becomes King Over Israel

1 All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’”

3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the Lord had promised through Samuel.

David Conquers Jerusalem

4 David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there 5 said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.

6 David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief.” Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.

7 David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. 8 He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. 9 And David became more and more powerful, because the Lord Almighty was with him.

David Becomes King as the Lord Promised (v. 1–3)

In yesterday's passage, we saw the tragic end of King Saul and his royal line. Today’s passage stands in stark contrast, describing King David’s overwhelming success and triumph. However, according to the theology of the author of Chronicles, the underlying reason for both Saul’s tragic downfall and David’s rise to power is fundamentally the same: everything happens according to the Word of God.

Today’s text records the process of David being anointed and elevated as king over all Israel. The leaders—representing all Israel—came to David in Hebron and asked him to become their king. They presented three reasons to convince David that he was qualified to reign:

  1. David was close kin to all Israel (v. 1): This simply means they were all fellow descendants of Jacob. Long before, Moses had commanded that if Israel ever appointed a king, he must be chosen from among their own brothers (Deuteronomy 17:15).

  2. David had acted as Israel's true leader even when Saul was king (v. 2a): It was David who defeated Goliath and accomplished countless exploits afterward. He was already their effective leader in battle.

  3. The Lord God had already designated David to rule over Israel (v. 2b): After God rejected Saul, the prophet Samuel secretly visited the house of Jesse and anointed David as king.

With Saul gone, David becoming king over all Israel was the most natural next step. After David and the leaders of Israel made a covenant before the Lord, David was made king over all Israel. The author of Chronicles adds a theological summary to this moment: "according to the word of the Lord given through Samuel." Indeed, both Saul’s death and David’s coronation fulfilled God's exact word. Ultimately, only the Word of the Lord stands fulfilled.

However, David’s ascent to the throne of all Israel was not quick. Anointed in his mid-teens, he became king over the southern tribe of Judah at age 30. It took another seven and a half years before he reigned over all Israel. In other words, God’s promise was fully realized seven and a half years after Saul’s death.

Interestingly, the author of Chronicles completely skips those seven and a half years, writing as if David became king over all Israel immediately after Saul died. What happened during those years, and why did the author omit that period?

After Saul’s death, David was made king of Judah in Hebron while a civil war broke out between him and Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son who ruled northern Israel. During this war, Joab deceptively murdered Abner, the commander of Israel's army, to avenge his brother—even though Abner had come to make a peace treaty with David. In response, David fasted and led the funeral mournings for Abner. Shortly after, Ish-bosheth was assassinated, and when the assassins brought his head to David expecting a reward, David executed them instead. Seeing David’s integrity, the hearts of all Israel turned toward him.

The author of Chronicles leaves out these dark chapters, as well as David’s later personal sins and family scandals, jumping straight to his coronation over all Israel.

The chronicler did this intentionally: to emphasize that David was God’s chosen, ideal king and that the Davidic kingdom possessed divine legitimacy. No event better served the author's primary purpose than the glorious unity of David being crowned king over all Israel.

King David, Whom the Lord Is With (v. 4–9)

After becoming king over all Israel, David planned to relocate the nation's capital. For a long time, there was a specific stronghold David had his heart set on: the Jebusite fortress. Originally, this land had been allotted to the tribe of Judah during the time of Joshua. However, because the Jebusite stronghold was an impregnable fortress, the tribe of Judah had failed to drive them out, and the Jebusites continued to live alongside them. Confident in their natural defenses, the Jebusites taunted King David when he came to capture the city:

The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.”2 Samuel 5:6

In response, King David turned their taunts back on them, ordering his men to attack the city from within by entering through the water shaft and striking "the lame and the blind" whom David hated. This was a direct mocking of the Jebusites' arrogant insults, signaling their total destruction.

General Joab led a commando unit, infiltrated the city through the water shaft, and captured the Jebusite fortress.

The battle ended surprisingly fast. Joab son of Zeruiah went up first and became the chief commander (v. 6)—he simply climbed up, and the victory was already complete. The text records no bloodshed or prolonged fighting. The author includes this to highlight just how prosperous and successful David was: he fulfilled a divine command that no one had been able to accomplish since the days of Joshua.

Instead of keeping Hebron—which was located too far south—as his seat of power, David captured the Jebusite fortress and established it as the capital for all Israel. People came to call this stronghold the City of David. It was also known as Zion, and eventually, people called this holy city Jerusalem. Thus, through David, the promised city where God pledged to dwell was finally established:

...you must seek the place the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling.Deuteronomy 12:5

The contrasting fates of Saul in the preceding chapter and David in this text are striking. While both kings experienced lives shaped by the fulfillment of God’s word, Saul met ruin, whereas David continuously prospered. The author of Chronicles provides the theological reason for this difference: "And David became more and more powerful, because the Lord Almighty was with him" (v. 9).

David thrived because the Lord God was with him.

What does it truly mean to have the Lord with you? It comes down to this: listening to, reading, memorizing, meditating on, and obeying God’s Word. That is what it means for God to be with you.

Do you desire God to be with you? Do you want to walk with God? Simply obey His Word. That is what walking with God looks like. And those who do will surely prosper!
