C.S. 루이스는 시편 119편에 대해서 “정교한 공예인들이 백성들의 사랑을 얻기 위해 한 솔기 한 솔기 공들여 수놓은 한 폭의 수예품 같다.”고 극찬한 바 있습니다. 본 시편은 아시는바와 같이 히브리어 알파벳 22개가 각각 8절씩 총 176절, 22연으로 구성된 시입니다. 그리고 그중에서 오늘 본문은 7번째 알파벳 자인 ז 과 8번째 알파벳 헤트 ח 로 시작되는 7연과 8연에 해당하는 부분입니다.

오늘 말씀의 제목은 “악인들 때문에 맹렬한 분노에 사로잡힐 때”입니다. 시편 119편 중에 특별히 7, 8연은 그럴 때 읽어야 하는 시입니다. 살다보면 얼마나 맹렬한 분노가 일어날 때가 많습니까? 시인은 주의 율법을 지키지 않는 악인들로 말미암아 맹렬한 분노가 올라옵니다. 우리도 뉴스를 접하면서 얼마나 맹룔한 분노가 올라옵니까?

매사추세츠주 덕스베리Duxbury에서 발생한 린지 클랜시Lindsay Clancy사건이 이에 해당합니다. 2023년 1월, 간호사 출신인 린지 클랜시는 남편에게 저녁 식사와 약을 사 오라며 외출을 보내고서는 자신이 낳은  5세, 3세, 8개월 된 세 자녀를 운동용 밴드로 목 졸라 살해했습니다. 그후 자신도 2층에서 투신하여 자살을 시도했지만, 미수에 그치고 하반신이 마비되었습니다. 심각한 산후 우울증으로 인한 사고였습니다.

남편은 아내를 용서한다고 증언하고, 산후우울증의 무서움을 피력했습니다. 이후 배심원들은 그래도 무고한 아이들을 살해한 죄는 처벌해야 한다는 주장과 그녀 역시 피해자로 무죄하다는 주장이 첨예하게 대립하여 결론을 내지 못하고 재판이 난항에 빠져들었다고 합니다.

우리는 이런 사건을 대할 때 복잡한 심정의 맹렬한 분노가 올라옵니다. 변해가는 세상, 인간임을 포기한 선택, 점점 깊어지는 마음의 병과 그럼에도 옳바른 판결을 내려야 하는데 하지 못하는 미성숙한 사회 등

C.S. Lewis highly praised Psalm 119, remarking that it is like a piece of embroidery meticulously stitched seam by seam by exquisite artisans to win the love of the people. As you know, this psalm consists of 22 stanzas total—176 verses—where each stanza contains 8 verses corresponding to one of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Today’s text comes from the 7th and 8th stanzas, which begin with the 7th letter, Zayin (ז), and the 8th letter, Heth (ח).

The title of today’s message is "When Overcome by Burning Indignation Because of the Wicked." Stanzas 7 and 8 of Psalm 119 are precisely what we should read in such moments. How often in life do we experience intense, burning anger? The psalmist feels a hot indignation rise within him because of the wicked who forsake God's law. Don't we also feel a similar burning rage when we watch the news?

The Lindsay Clancy case in Duxbury, Massachusetts, is a clear example of this. In January 2023, Lindsay Clancy, a nurse, sent her husband out to pick up dinner and medication. In his absence, she strangled her three children—aged 5 years, 3 years, and 8 months—using exercise bands. She then attempted suicide by jumping from the second story, which left her paralyzed from the waist down rather than dead. The tragedy was caused by severe postpartum depression.

Her husband testified that he forgave his wife and spoke about the horrifying reality of postpartum depression. Subsequently, the trial stalled in a fierce debate among jurors: some argued that she must be punished for murdering innocent children, while others maintained that she was also a victim and thus innocent, leaving the jury unable to reach a verdict.

When we encounter news like this, a complex sense of fierce anger surges within us—anger over a changing world, choices that seem to abandon humanity, deepening mental illnesses, and an immature society struggling to render proper justice.

주의 종에게 하신 말씀을 기억하소서 (49~56절)

이럴 때 우리는 무엇을 해야 할까요? 그것은 주의 종에게 하신 말씀을 기억해달라고 하나님께 기도하는 것입니다. 여기서 기억하다는 동사는 자카르입니다. 이 동사가 사용된 구약이 구절이 있습니다.

하나님이 그들의 고통 소리를 들으시고 하나님이 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 세운 그의 언약을 기억하사 하나님이 이스라엘 자손을 돌보셨고 하나님이 그들을 기억하셨더라 (출 2:24~25)

여기에 사용된 단어가 자카르입니다. 하나님이 우리를 기억하시면 출애굽, 곧 구원의 역사가 일어납니다. 그러므로 우리는 악인, 그리고 그 배후에 있는 사탄으로 말미암아 맹렬한 분노가 올라올 때는 하나님께 나에게 약속하셨던 말씀, 곧 언약을 기억해달라고 기도해야 하는 것입니다.

한편 그렇게 기도하기 위해서 먼저 필요한 것은 내가 하나님의 언약의 말씀을 기억하는 것입니다.

시인은 하나님이 자신에게 하신 말씀을 기억하고(49), 주의 옛 규례를 기억하며(52), 밤에도 주의 이름을 기억합니다(54). 그러니까 시인은 하나님의 말씀과 언약, 이름을 기억하면서 새벽이나 밤에도 하나님께 자신과 한 언약을 기억해 달라고 기도한 것입니다. 이렇게 할 때 어떤 일이 벌어질까요?

먼저는 주께서 그렇게 말씀을 붙들고 기도하는 자에게 소망을 주십니다(49).

세상과 악인들의 행동을 보면 모든 소망이 사라진 절망의 시대 같지만, 하나님이 나를 기억하고 내가 하나님의 말씀을 기억할 때 그것이 소망이 되는 것입니다.

다음은 고난 중에 위로가 넘칩니다(50, 52).

인간의 위로가 힘이 되고, 도움이 되는 경우가 있습니다. 하지만 진정한 위로는 하나님께로부터 얻어야 합니다. 하나님의 언약과 말씀과 규례가 나의 위로가 됩니다. 주의 이름을 기억한다는 것은 그분의 성품을 믿는다는 것입니다. 하나님의 성품은 항상 선하신 분이라는 것입니다. 이것은 어떤 상황에서도 위로가 되는 말씀입니다. 결국에는 모든 것을 선으로 바꾸시는 하나님이시기 때문입니다.

마지막으로 언약을 붙들고 기도할 때, 그 말씀이 나의 노래가 됩니다(54).

하나님의 언약은 그저 허상이 아닌, 실상이 됩니다. 나의 삶 속에서 하나님의 말씀은 하나 둘 성취됩니다. 우리는 성취되는 말씀을 바라보면서 하나님을 찬양합니다. 그렇습니다. 주의 말씀이 내 소망이요, 위로요, 노래가 됩니다. 중요한 것은 내가 그 말씀을 기억하고, 믿고, 순종할 때 말씀이 그렇게 작동하는 것입니다.

Remember the Word to Your Servant (vv. 49–56)

What should we do at a time like this? We must pray to God, asking Him to remember the word He spoke to His servant. The verb used here for "remember" is zakar. This word appears elsewhere in the Old Testament:

The word used here is zakar. When God remembers us, the Exodus—a work of salvation—unfolds. Therefore, when burning indignation wells up inside us because of the wicked and the Satanic forces behind them, we must pray for God to remember the word and covenant He promised to us.

To pray this way, however, we first need to remember God's covenant words ourselves.

The psalmist remembers the word spoken to him (v. 49), remembers God's ancient laws (v. 52), and remembers God's name even in the night (v. 55). In other words, as the psalmist remembered God's word, covenant, and name, he prayed day and night for God to remember the covenant made with him.

What happens when we do this?

• God gives hope to those who cling to His word in prayer (v. 49). Looking at the world and the actions of the wicked makes it seem like an age of complete despair, but when God remembers us and we remember His word, that becomes our hope.

• Abundant comfort flows during times of affliction (vv. 50, 52). Human comfort can be helpful, but true comfort comes from God. His covenant, word, and laws become our solace. Remembering God's name means trusting His character—and God's character is always good. This yields comfort in any situation, knowing that He ultimately turns all things for good.

• His word becomes our song when we pray clinging to the covenant (v. 54). God's covenant is not an illusion; it becomes reality. One by one, His promises are fulfilled in our lives, leading us to praise Him.

His word becomes our hope, our comfort, and our song. What matters is that the word works this way when we remember, believe, and obey it.

주의 말씀대로 내게 은혜를 베푸소서 (57~64절)

찰스 스펄전 Charles H. Spurgeon이나 D. L. 무디 Dwight L. Moody는 기도할 때 특정 성경 구절을 손가락으로 짚으며 이렇게 약속하셨으니 이루어 달라고 기도했다고 합니다. 얼마나 짚었는지 특정 부분의 구절은 닳아서 없어질 정도였다고 합니다. 특히 무디는 성경의 약속 구절 옆에 'T(Tried: 시험해 봄)'와 'P(Proved: 증명됨)'라는 철자를 적어두며 기도한 것으로 잘 알려져 있습니다.

우리 역시 말씀을 붙잡고 하나님께 시인처럼 은혜를 베풀어 주시기를 기도해야 합니다(58, 62).

뿐만 아니라 자신의 행위를 돌아보며 회개하는 기도를 해야 합니다(59).

또한 말씀을 듣고 배우고 신속하게 순종해야 합니다(60, 64).

그리고 믿음의 동역자들과 함께 하나님의 법도를 따라야 합니다(63).

우리는 믿음의 동역자들과 함께 성경을 읽고, 묵상하고, 암송하고, 연구하고, 해석하고, 적용해야 합니다.

악인 때문에 맹렬한 분노에 사로잡힌지 않으려면 그렇게 해야 합니다. 그렇게 할 때 하나님의 놀라운 구원의 역사가 이루어 질 것입니다.

프로테스탄트, 곧 기독교 개혁주의자들의 구호는 오직 성경으로, 라틴어 솔라 스크립투라 Sola Scriptura 입니다. 종교개혁자들은 교회의 권위나 전통보다 더 우월하고 권위있는, 아니 사실은 하나 뿐인 권위인 성경말씀을 기억하며 그 권위에 자신들을 헌신한 것입니다. 마틴 루터는 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

나는 환상이나 꿈도 심지어 천사도 보내주지 마시도록 하나님과 언약을 맺었다. 나는 성경이라는 선물로 깊이 만족한다. 성경은 풍성한 교훈과 이 세상과 오는 세상에서 내가 알 필요가 있는 모든 것을 주고 있다.

그렇습니다. 하나님의 이 말씀을 기억하는 것이 복입니다. 시편 1편의 복있는 사람과 시편 119편이 말하는 복있는 사람은 결국 같은 사람입니다. 하나님께로 말씀을 받고, 그 주신 말씀에 순종하는 자가 복있는 사람입니다. 바로 우리들입니다.

Be Gracious to Me According to Your Promise (vv. 57–64)

It is said that when Charles H. Spurgeon and D. L. Moody prayed, they would point their fingers at specific Scripture verses and ask God to fulfill them because He had promised to do so. In fact, they held onto certain passages so frequently that the pages became worn and frayed. Moody, in particular, was famous for writing "T" (Tried) and "P" (Proved) next to promise verses in his Bible as he prayed through them.

In the same way, we must hold fast to the Word and pray for God to show us grace, just as the psalmist did (vv. 58, 62). To walk in this truth, we are called to:

• Examine our ways and offer prayers of repentance (v. 59).

• Listen to, learn, and swiftly obey His word (vv. 60, 64).

• Follow God’s precepts together with fellow believers (v. 63).

We must read, meditate on, memorize, study, interpret, and apply the Scriptures alongside our brothers and sisters in faith. Doing so is how we keep from being consumed by burning rage toward the wicked—and through it, God unfolds His extraordinary work of salvation.

The core slogan of the Protestant Reformers was Sola Scriptura—"By Scripture Alone." The Reformers submitted themselves to the authority of the Word, recognizing it as higher and more binding than church tradition or institutional power—indeed, as the ultimate authority. Martin Luther famously declared:

Remembering God's Word is true blessedness. Ultimately, the blessed person of Psalm 1 and the blessed person of Psalm 119 are one and the same: the one who receives God's Word and walks in obedience to it. That blessed person is you and me.
