119:33 여호와여 주의 율례들의 도를 내게 가르치소서 내가 끝까지 지키리이다

37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things;

    preserve my life according to your word.

38 Fulfill your promise to your servant,

    so that you may be feared.

39 Take away the disgrace I dread,

    for your laws are good.

40 How I long for your precepts!

    In your righteousness preserve my life.

41 May your unfailing love come to me, Lord,

    your salvation, according to your promise;

42 then I can answer anyone who taunts me,

    for I trust in your word.

43 Never take your word of truth from my mouth,

    for I have put my hope in your laws.

44 I will always obey your law,

    for ever and ever.

45 I will walk about in freedom,

    for I have sought out your precepts.

46 I will speak of your statutes before kings

    and will not be put to shame,

47 for I delight in your commands

    because I love them.

48 I reach out for your commands, which I love,

    that I may meditate on your decrees.

                이사야서 40:30-31말씀은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “청년이라도 피곤하며 곤비하며 장정이라도 넘어지며 쓰러지되 오직 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻으리니 독수리가 날개치며 올라감 같을 것이요 달음박질하여도 곤비하지 아니하겠고 걸어가도 피곤하지 아니하리로다” 하나님을 구하고 바라는 이들에게 지치지 않는 새 힘을 주신다는 약속의 말씀입니다. 오늘의 말씀 또한 이와 비슷한 말씀을 하고 있는 것 같습니다. 우리는 앞에서 고난과 비방 속에서도 말씀의 길을 선택하려는 시인의 결단을 보았습니다. 그러나 오늘의 말씀은 그 결단이 인간의 의지만으로는 가능하지 않음을 보여주고 있습니다.  하나님께서 당신의 말씀의 도를 우리에게 가르쳐 주셔야만 우리는 세상의 길이 아닌 하나님의 길로 행하게 될 것입니다. 그렇게 하나님의 말씀이 우리에게 이루어질 때에 우리는 새 힘을 얻어 이전과는 다르게 담대히, 또 자유롭게 살아갈 것입니다. 오늘은 “주의 도를 구하라, 새 힘 주시리” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Isaiah 40:30–31 tells us:

“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

It is a promise of untiring, renewed strength given to those who seek and wait upon God.

Today’s passage carries a very similar message. Previously, we witnessed the psalmist’s firm resolve to choose the path of God's Word even amidst suffering and slander. However, today’s text shows us that such determination cannot be sustained by human willpower alone. Only when God Himself teaches us the way of His Word can we walk in His path rather than the ways of the world. When God’s Word is fulfilled in our lives, we receive new strength to live boldly and freely, unlike ever before.

Today, looking at the stanzas for the Hebrew letters He and Waw, I would like to share a message titled: “Seek the Way of the LORD, He Will Give You New Strength.”

                먼저 33-40절까지의 ‘헤’ 단락을 살펴보겠습니다. 시인은 이 단락에서 끊임없이 하나님께 간구합니다. “가르치소서, 깨닫게 하소서, 행하게 사소서, 향하게 하소서, 살아나게 하소서.” 거의 모든 절마다 “주께서 내게  무언가를 해주조서” 라고 간구하고 있지요. 우리는 이 단락에서 말씀대로 사는 삶은 나의 결단이 아니라 하나님의 도움에서 시작된다는 사실을 배울 수 있습니다. 시인은 바로 그것을 알았기에 33절에서 하나님께 이토록 간절히 “주의 율례들의 도를 내게 가르쳐달라” 고 기도하고 있는 것입니다. 34절과 35절도 마찬가지입니다. “깨닫게 하여 주소서,” “주의 계명들의 길로 행하게 하소서” 시인은 하나님의 도우심을 구합니다. 하나님께서 도우신다면 그는 끝까지, 전심으로 그 말씀을 지킬 것이라고 합니다. 여기서 우리가 알 수 있는 것은 그는 자신의 힘과 능력을 의지하지 않는다는 것입니다. 배우고자 하는 겸손한 마음이 있었습니다. 오늘 말씀을 가만히 보면 그는 왕들 앞에 설 정도로 지위가 있었던 사람처럼 보입니다. 그런데도 그는 세상의 것을 구하는 것이 아니라 하나님의 말씀을 구합니다. 36-37절이 이를 나타내고 있습니다. 그의 마음, 그의 시선이 오직 하나님의 말씀을 향하게 해달라고 기도합니다. 그는 인간의 마음이 늘 어떤 대상을 향해 기울어진다는 것을 알았던 것 같습니다. 그래서 그는 자신의 마음이 탐욕이 아닌 “주의 증거들에게 향하게” 해달라고 기도합니다. 그의 시선 또한 마찬가지입니다. 허탄한 것, 겉보기에는 화려하여 우리의 시선을 강렬히 끌어당기지만 실은 텅 비어있는 것에서 그 시선을 돌이켜 주의 길, 주의 도를 향하게 하시고 주님의 도를 통해 자신을 되살려달라고 기도합니다. 38절, 그렇게 주의 약속하신 말씀이 자신에게 이루어질 때에 주를 경외하는 마음이 샘솟을 것이라고 말합니다. 또한 39절에서는 하나님께 자신이 두려워하던 수치와 비방에서 건져달라고 기도합니다. 그는 그 위협보다 하나님의 선하신 말씀을 더 의지하는 것입니다. 그는 그 말씀을 생명의 근원으로 갈망합니다. 그래서 그는 40절의 말씀처럼 주의 법도들, 주의 말씀을 사모하는 것입니다.

1. The He Stanza (vv. 33–40): Living by the Word Begins with God's Help

First, let us examine the He (ה) stanza (vv. 33–40). In this section, the psalmist continually petitions God: “Teach me, give me understanding, direct me, turn my heart, preserve my life.” In almost every verse, he cries out, “Lord, do something in me!”

From this stanza, we learn a crucial truth: A life lived according to the Word does not start with human resolve, but with God’s help. Knowing this full well, the psalmist earnestly prays in verse 33: “Teach me, LORD, the way of your decrees.”

He continues this cry in verses 34 and 35: “Give me understanding... Direct me in the path of your commands.” He seeks divine assistance, promising that if God helps him, he will keep His law wholeheartedly to the end. Notice that he relies neither on his own strength nor on his own capability; he comes with a humble, teachable heart. Although the context suggests he held a position of enough influence to stand before kings, he chooses not to seek worldly gain, but the Word of God.

Verses 36 and 37 illustrate this focus. He prays that his heart and eyes may be directed solely toward God's testimonies:

• Turn my heart: Recognizing that human hearts naturally lean toward selfish desires, he prays: “Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain” (v. 36).

• Turn my eyes: He prays: “Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word” (v. 37). He asks God to turn his gaze away from vanity—things that look grand on the surface but are hollow inside—and to revive him through His way.

In verse 38, he declares that when God’s promised Word comes to pass in his life, a heart of reverence for the Lord will spring forth. In verse 39, he asks to be delivered from the disgrace and taunts he dreads, trusting in God's good laws above any earthly threat. He longs for God's precepts as his very source of life (v. 40).

                41-48절까지의 “바브” 단락은 하나님의 말씀이 그의 삶에 이루어질 때에 그에게 이전과는 다른 새 힘이 생긴 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 41절을 함께 보시겠습니다. 시인은 “주의 인자하심과 주의 구원이 내게 임하게 하소서” 라고 기도합니다. 그런데 중요한 것은 이 구원이 막연한 기대가 아니라 ‘주의 말씀대로’ 임하는 구원이라는 것입니다. 그가 하나님의 말씀을 얼마나 의지하고 있는지 대번에 알 수 있는 대목입니다. 그것은 42절에도 절절히 나와있습니다. “내가 주의 말씀을 의지함이니이다.” 그가 어떻게 하나님의 말씀을 의지하고 있습니까? 43절, 그는 말씀을 진리라고 부릅니다. 그리고 그 말씀을 자신의 입에서 조금도 떠나지 말게 해달라고 간구합니다. 44절, 함께 읽겠습니다. “내가 주의 율법을 항상 지키리이다 영원히 지키리이다” 항상, 영원히, 지키겠다고 다짐합니다. 이것이 그가 하나님의 말씀을 의지하는 태도입니다. 그가 전적으로 의지하는 하나님의 말씀이 그에게 임할 때에 어떤 일이 일어납니까? 42절, “그리하시면 내가 나를 비방하는 자들에게 대답할 말이 있사오리니” 이전까지와는 다르지요. 그전에는 “비방과 멸시를 내게서 떠나게 하소서” 라고 간구하였지 “나를 비방하는 자들에게 대답할 말이 있을 것”이라는 말은 한 적이 없습니다. 그의 내면이 바뀌었습니다. 45절, “내가 주의 법도들을 구하였사오니 자유롭게 걸어갈 것이오며” 하나님의 말씀을 통하여 자유로워졌습니다. 압박과 수치에서 벗어났습니다. 여기서 자유롭다는 말은 ‘넓다, 광활하다, 탁 트였다’라는 의미에서 파생된 단어입니다. 말씀에 온전히 사로잡힐 때, 그는 오히려 자유로워졌습니다. 그전까지 자신을 비방하던 사람들의 말이나 생명의 위협으로부터 벗어나 참 평안과 쉼을 얻은 것입니다. 새 힘을 얻은 것입니다. 46절, 이제 그는 전에는 비방을 들을까 두려워하던 왕들 앞에서 하나님의 말씀들을 전하겠다고 말합니다. 그렇게 할 지라도 이제 그는 수치를 당하지 않을 것이라는 자신감을 보입니다. 말씀을 전적으로 의지하고 그 말씀으로 새 힘을 얻은 그는 이제 그 말씀을 사랑하지 않을 수 없습니다. 즐거워하지 않을 수 없습니다. 48절입니다. 그는 이제 자신의 손을 자신이 사랑하는 주의 계명을 향하여, 말씀을 향하여 들겠다고 고백합니다. 이는 실로 놀라운 고백입니다. 손을 든다는 것은 보통 기도와 예배를 할 때에 하는 행동이지요. 그는 지금 말씀을 예배의 대상으로 삼고 있습니다. 그는 말씀이 곧 하나님이심을 무의식적으로 표현하고 있는 것이지요. 요한복음에서 말하고 있는 말씀이 곧 하나님이시라는 정의를 그는 알지 못했을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님의 말씀을 향한 그의 사랑은 시간을 뛰어넘는 놀라운 진리를 자신도 알지 못한 사이에 계시하고 있는 것입니다. 이것이 말씀을 통해 계시하시는 성령님의 사역이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그 능력이 우리에게 새 힘을 주실 것입니다.

2. The Waw Stanza (vv. 41–48): The Transformative Power and Freedom of the Word

In the Waw (ו) stanza (vv. 41–48), we see that when God’s Word is fulfilled in the psalmist's life, a new, unprecedented strength surges within him.

Let us look at verse 41: “May your unfailing love come to me, LORD, your salvation, according to your promise.” Notice that this salvation is not a vague expectation; it is a salvation promised "according to your Word." This highlights his complete reliance on Scripture. He echoes this deep trust in verse 42: “For I trust in your word.”

How does he express this trust?

• In verse 43, he calls the Word the word of truth and begs that it not be taken completely from his mouth.

• In verse 44, he vows: “I will always obey your law, for ever and ever.”

When the Word he relies on so totally comes upon him, what happens?

• A Transformed Inner State (v. 42): Previously, he prayed, “Remove scorn and contempt from me.” But now he declares: “Then I can answer anyone who taunts me.” His inner heart has been completely transformed!

• True Freedom (v. 45): "I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought your precepts." The Hebrew word for "freedom" here conveys a sense of broadness, wide open space, and unhindered movement. When fully bound by the Word of God, he actually experiences ultimate freedom! He is delivered from the anxiety of slander and death threats, entering into true peace, rest, and renewed strength.

• Boldness Before Kings (v. 46): He declares that he will speak of God’s testimonies before kings without feeling ashamed.

• Reverence and Worship (vv. 47–48): Filled with new strength from the Word he trusts, he cannot help but love and delight in God's commands. In verse 48, he makes an extraordinary confession: "I reach out my hands for your commands, which I love, and I meditate on your decrees."

Lifting one's hands is typically an act of prayer and worship. In effect, he treats the Word of God with the reverence due to God Himself, unconsciously testifying to the eternal truth later revealed in John’s Gospel: The Word was God. Though he lived centuries before John's writings, the Holy Spirit working through his love for Scripture revealed this profound reality.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 우리는 하나님께서 도와주셔야만 말씀을 깨달을 수 있고 행할 수 있음을 보았습니다. 그렇기에 우리는 하나님께 주의 도를 가르쳐달라고 기도해야 합니다. 나의 힘이 아닌 하나님의 능력이 임할 때에 우리는 새로운 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 이전과는 다른 자유와 참 평안을 얻게 됩니다. 두려움에서 벗어나 왕들 앞에 설 만큼 담대한 신앙을 갖게 됩니다. 그리고 그렇기 위해서는 말씀을 우리의 입에서 조금도 떠나지 않게 하고 항상 지키며 영원히 지키는 말씀을 전적으로 의지하는 태도가 필요합니다. 그리하여 말씀을 사랑하고 즐거워할 때에 우리가 알지 못하던 성령의 새로운 역사가 우리 가운데 일어날 것입니다. 주의 도를 구함으로 새 힘을 얻으시는 여러분 모두가 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Today we have seen that only when God helps us can we truly understand and walk in His Word. Therefore, our constant prayer must be: “Lord, teach me Your way.”

When God's power—rather than our own human willpower—descends upon us, we receive brand-new strength. We step into a level of freedom, peace, and boldness that allows us to stand unashamed even before kings.

To experience this, we must adopt an attitude of total reliance—keeping God's Word constantly on our lips, obeying it always and forever. As we love and delight in His truth, the Holy Spirit will perform new, marvelous works in our lives beyond what we can imagine.

May each of you seek the way of the LORD today, and may He fill you with renewed strength. Amen.
