119:17 주의 종을 후대하여 살게 하소서 그리하시면 주의 말씀을 지키리이다

119:18 내 눈을 열어서 주의 율법에서 놀라운 것을 보게 하소서

    that I may obey your word.

18 Open my eyes that I may see

    wonderful things in your law.

19 I am a stranger on earth;

    do not hide your commands from me.

    for your laws at all times.

21 You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed,

    those who stray from your commands.

22 Remove from me their scorn and contempt,

    for I keep your statutes.

23 Though rulers sit together and slander me,

    your servant will meditate on your decrees.

24 Your statutes are my delight;

    they are my counselors.

25 I am laid low in the dust;

    preserve my life according to your word.

26 I gave an account of my ways and you answered me;

    teach me your decrees.

27 Cause me to understand the way of your precepts,

    that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.

28 My soul is weary with sorrow;

    strengthen me according to your word.

29 Keep me from deceitful ways;

    be gracious to me and teach me your law.

30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;

    I have set my heart on your laws.

31 I hold fast to your statutes, Lord;

    do not let me be put to shame.

32 I run in the path of your commands,

    for you have broadened my understanding.

                가수 최희준씨의 대표곡 중에 “하숙생” 이라는 노래가 있습니다. 가사가 이렇습니다. “인생은 나그네 길, 어디서 왔다가 어디로 가는가.” 오래전 노래인데도 계속 기억에 남는 것은 바로 우리네 인생길, 특히 이민 생활이 이 노래의 가사처럼 정처없이 떠도는 나그네와 같다는 느낌이 들기 때문일 것입니다. 그런데 오늘 본문의 시편을 쓴 시인이야 말로 더 그런 것 같습니다. 학자들은 이 시편이 포로 생활을 경험한 사람이 쓴 시일 것이라고 예상합니다. 고향에서 끌려나와 낯선 이국 땅에서 나그네처럼 살아갑니다. 그곳의 사람들은 자신을 비방하며 멸시합니다. 수치를 당하고 마음이 짓눌려서 녹아버릴 것 같습니다. 삶이 바닥을 치는 정도가 그 바닥을 뚫고 진짜 밑바닥에 곤두박질 친 것 같습니다. 진흙탕, 개똥밭에 굴러도 이승이 낫다고 하는데 나는 곧 죽을 것 같습니다. 바로 그 때에 시인은 하나님의 말씀을 붙들었습니다. 자신의 삶이 밑바닥을 쳤을 때에 그는 하나님의 말씀에서 즐거움을 찾았고 하나님께서 행하신 일들, 하나님께서 약속하신 것들을 보았습니다. 그리고 그 말씀을 따라 살게 해달라고 간구합니다. 오늘은 “삶의 밑바닥에서 말씀을 붙들라” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

There is a famous classic Korean song titled "The Lodger" (하숙생). Its lyrics open with the line: "Life is a wanderer's path; where did I come from, and where am I heading?"

Even after many years, this song lingers in our hearts because life—especially the immigrant journey—often feels like that of a wanderer drifting without a permanent home.

The psalmist in today’s text knew this feeling all too well. Scholars suggest that Psalm 119 was written by someone who personally experienced the Babylonian exile. Uprooted from his homeland, he lived like a stranger in a foreign land. People around him slandered and despised him. Bound by shame and crushed in spirit, his heart felt as though it were melting away.

His life had not merely hit rock bottom; it felt as if it had broken through the floor into absolute desolation. Though an old proverb says "Better a live dog than a dead lion"—suggesting that even a miserable life is better than death—he felt on the verge of dying.

Yet, right at that moment, the psalmist reached out and clung to the Word of God. When his life hit rock bottom, he found delight in God's truth and looked upon the wondrous deeds and promises of God. He prayed desperately for God to enable him to live according to that Word.

Today, looking at the stanzas for the Hebrew letters Gimel and Daleth, I would like to share a message titled: “Grasp the Word at the Bottom of Life.”

                자 이제 세번째 알파벳 “김멜” 연입니다. 17-24절은 너무나 어려운 시인의 상황을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 17절에서 제일 먼저 그가 하나님께 구하는 것은 나를 살게 해달라는 기도입니다. 하나님의 넘치는 베푸심으로 나를 살려달라는 것입니다. 그러면 내가 주의 말씀을 지키겠다고 고백합니다. 우리는 이 말씀을 통해 첫번째로 그의 삶이 지금 얼마나 어려운 상황인지를 알 수 있습니다. 그리고 두번째로 바로 하나님의 공급하심만이 그런 상황 가운데서도 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 지킬 수 있게 하는 것임을 알 수 있습니다. 다시 시인의 상황으로 돌아가겠습니다. 19절, 그는 땅에서 나그네가 되었습니다. 23절, 통치자들도 앉아서 그를 비방하고 멸시합니다. 자 그런데 그가 보았던 하나님의 말씀에는 21절을 보니 교만한 자들은 저주를 받았고, 하나님의 계명에서 떠났던 사람들은 하나님의 꾸짖음을 당하였습니다. 분명 말씀에는 그렇게 적혀 있습니다. 그런데 대체 이 말씀들은 언제 이루어지는 것인가? 20절을 보니 그는 주의 규례들, 하나님이 말씀하셨던 그 심판이 그들에게 임하기를 그토록 바랬습니다. 그런데 그가 그렇게 하나님의 정의를 사모하였던 만큼 그의 마음이 상하였다고 합니다. 무슨 말입니까? 22절, 지금 그는 말씀을 지키고 있지만 비방과 멸시 가운데 있습니다. 하나님의 그 말씀들이 아직 이루어지고 있지 않는 것입니다. 그의 삶은 여전히 어렵습니다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 하나님의 말씀을 붙듭니다. 23절, 고관들에게서 비방을 당할 때에 그는 하나님의 말씀을 묵상합니다. 그는 하나님의 약속을 기억합니다. 하나님의 정의가 반드시 이루어질 것을 믿습니다. 그에게는 자신의 현실이 현실이 아니라 하나님의 말씀이 현실인 것입니다. 그래서 18절에서 그는 “내 눈을 열어서 주의 율법에서 놀라운 것을 보게 하소서” 라고 간구했던 것입니다. 그러면 어떻게 됩니까? 24절을 보니 하나님의 말씀이 그의 즐거움이 되고 그의 갈 길을 인도해주시는 길잡이가 되어주시는 것입니다.

1. The Gimel Stanza (vv. 17–24): When Slandered and Alienated, Fix Your Eyes on the Word

In the third stanza (vv. 17–24), which begins with the letter Gimel (ג), we catch a glimpse of the psalmist’s agonizing circumstances.

In verse 17, his very first petition to God is a plea for life: "Be good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your word." He begs for God's bountiful mercy so that he may survive, vowing to keep God's Word in return. This reveals two vital truths:

1. His current situation is critically dire.

2. Only God’s sovereign provision enables us to keep His Word amidst severe suffering.

Looking closer at his plight:

• Verse 19: He confesses, "I am a stranger on earth."

• Verse 23: Even rulers sit and slander him.

According to God's Word, the arrogant are under a curse, and those who stray from God's commands face His rebuke (v. 21). The psalmist knows what Scripture says, yet he asks: When will these promises be fulfilled?

In verse 20, he confesses that his soul is consumed with longing for God's laws at all times. He yearns for divine justice, yet the delay breaks his heart. In verse 22, even as he keeps God's testimonies, he remains trapped under scorn and contempt. The fulfillment of God's Word seems nowhere in sight, and his life remains painfully hard.

Nevertheless, he refuses to let go of God's Word! While nobles plot against him, verse 23 records: "Your servant will meditate on your decrees."

He remembers God’s promises and trusts that divine justice will ultimately prevail. To him, his painful circumstances are not the ultimate reality; God’s Word is the true reality. That is why he prayed in verse 18:

“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” (v. 18)

What happens when God opens our eyes? Verse 24 gives the answer: "Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors." God's Word becomes his source of joy and the faithful guide directing his path through the dark.

                다음 연인 “달렛” 연도 마찬가지입니다. 25절, 그의 영혼은 진토에 붙었습니다. 무슨 말입니까? 그의 마음이 바닥을 쳤다는 말입니다. 도저히 혼자 힘으로는 일어설 수 없을 만큼 그는 지금 밑바닥에 널부러져 있습니다. 그는 다시 한번 간구합니다. 주님의 말씀대로, 그 약속대로 나를 살아나게 하소서. 무너진 삶 가운데서 그가 하나님께서 자신을 다시 살아나게 하실 수 있다는 것을 무엇을 통해 알았습니까? 주의 말씀대로. 하나님의 말씀을 통해 알았습니다. 26절, 그래서 그는 하나님께 자신의 길을 맡깁니다. 그러자 하나님께서 그에게 응답하셨습니다. 우리 같으면 거기서 멈추었을 것입니다. 그런데 그는 거기서 멈추지 않고 한걸음 더 나아갑니다. “주의 율례들을 내게 가르치소서” 27절, “나에게 주의 법도들의 길을 깨닫게 하여 주소서 그리하시면 내가 주의 기이한 일들을 작은 소리로 읊조리이다.” 앞에서도 “내 눈을 열어서 주의 율법에서 놀라운 것을 보게” 해달라고 고백하였었지요. 하나님의 말씀은 어떤 기록이나 책이 아닌 것입니다. 성령께서 그 말씀 가운데 우리가 알지 못했던 놀라운 것, 기이한 일들을 보여주시는 것입니다. 이것은 우리가 할 수 있는 것이 아니라 오직 하나님의 가르치심이 있을 때에 일어나는 일인 것입니다. 그리고 그것이야 말로 28절의 말씀처럼 우리의 영혼이 눌려서 녹아내리는 것 같을 때에 우리를 다시 세워주시는 하나님의 말씀의 능력인 것입니다. 어려운 현실에서도, 삶의 밑바닥에서도 우리를 일으켜주시고 우리를 살아나게 하시는 능력, 그것이 하나님의 말씀의 능력인 것입니다. 그래서 그는 간구합니다. 29절, 거짓의 길을 떠나게 하시고 주의 법을 내게 은혜로이, 즉, 내 힘이 아닌 오직 하나님의 은혜로 그 말씀을 베풀어달라고 간구하는 것입니다. 30절, 그는 거짓의 길이 아닌 성실한 길을 택하였습니다. 그리고 하나님의 말씀을 그 앞에 두었습니다. 이렇게 그는 31절의 말씀처럼 하나님의 증거들에 매달렸습니다. 붙잡았습니다. 놓지 않았습니다. 그 말씀이 그를 수치에서 건져낼 것입니다. 그 무너진 마음을 다시 일으키시고 주님께서 그 마음을 32절의 말씀처럼 넓히실 것입니다. 그 때에 그는 하나님의 말씀의 길을 향하여 달려가겠다고 고백하는 것입니다.

2. The Daleth Stanza (vv. 25–32): When Crushed to the Dust, Cling to the Promises

The fourth stanza (vv. 25–32), starting with the letter Daleth (ד), deepens this picture of hardship.

In verse 25, the psalmist laments: "I am laid low in the dust; preserve my life according to your word." His heart has hit absolute rock bottom. He lies helpless in the dust, unable to stand up on his own.

How does he know that God can revive him out of his brokenness? "According to your word." He knows it through God's promises.

In verse 26, he recounts his ways to God, and God answers him. Yet he does not stop there; he takes a step further, praying: "Teach me your decrees!"

• Verse 27: "Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds."

God’s Word is not merely a collection of ink on parchment. Through the Holy Spirit, God opens our eyes to see wonderful, miraculous deeds embedded within His truth that we could never perceive on our own. This illumination is not something we can manufacture—it comes solely through God's divine teaching.

And this illumination carries life-changing power:

• Verse 28: "My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word."

When our souls melt away under the crushing weight of grief, God's Word raises us back up. This is the reviving power of God’s truth at the bottom of life.

Therefore, he continues his earnest prayer:

• Verse 29: Keep him from deceitful ways and graciously grant him His law.

• Verse 30: He has chosen the way of faithfulness and set his heart on God's laws.

• Verse 31: He holds fast to God's statutes, begging not to be put to shame.

The psalmist clings tightly to God's testimonies, refusing to let go. He trusts that God’s Word will rescue him from disgrace, rebuild his broken spirit, and set his heart free (v. 32). Only then does he vow: "I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding."

                말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 시편의 화자는 너무나 어려운 현실에 처해 있습니다. 나그네 되어 수치를 당하며 비방과 멸시 가운데 처했습니다. 하나님의 말씀이 나의 삶에 이루어질 것을 기대할 수록 더욱 마음이 상하고 지쳐만 갑니다. 그의 영혼이 눌려서 녹아내리는 것 같습니다. 삶의 밑바닥, 진흙바닥에 널부러져 도저히 살아 갈 수 없을 것만 같습니다. 그러나 그는 하나님의 말씀을 붙들었습니다. 하나님의 말씀은 나를 살리실 것입니다. 그 말씀을 내게 가르치실 때 나의 눈이 열리고 놀라운 것, 기이한 일들을 보게 하실 것입니다. 그리고 그것이야말로 우리가 묵상하며 잊지 말아야 할 하나님께서 우리에게 행하실 일입니다. 그 말씀에 매달려야 합니다. 하나님께서 우리의 쪼그라든 마음을 넓히시고 당신의 말씀을 깨닫게 해달라고 기도해야합니다. 그 말씀이 우리를 살리는 힘이기 때문입니다. 진흙탕 같은 삶의 밑바닥에 계신 분이 계십니까? 스스로의 힘으로 도저히 빠져나올 수 없는 늪에 주저앉아 계신 분 계십니까? 말씀을 붙드십시오. 그 말씀을 깨닫게 해달라고 기도하십시오. 그 말씀이 반드시 여러분을 살리실 것입니다. 기도하시겠습니다. 

The author of today’s psalm faced an overwhelming reality. He lived as an alien in a foreign land, enduring constant slander, mockery, and shame. The longer he waited for God's promises to unfold, the more weary his heart became, until his soul felt as though it were melting into the dust. He lay helpless in the mire, completely unable to save himself.

Yet, in that deep pit, he chose to grasp the Word of God.

God’s Word has the power to revive us. When God teaches us His truth, He opens our eyes to behold wondrous things—giving us the strength to endure and the faith to remember what He has done.

Are you currently going through a season where life feels like it has hit rock bottom? Are you sitting in a pit of despair, unable to pull yourself out by your own strength?

Grasp the Word of God. Pray for the Holy Spirit to open your eyes and grant you understanding of His truth. The Word that spoke creation into existence will surely raise you up, broaden your heart, and restore your soul. Amen.
