119:1 행위가 온전하여 여호와의 율법을 따라 행하는 자들은 복이 있음이여

119:2 여호와의 증거들을 지키고 전심으로 여호와를 구하는 자는 복이 있도다

119:3 참으로 그들은 불의를 행하지 아니하고 주의 도를 행하는도다

119:4 주께서 명령하사 주의 법도를 잘 지키게 하셨나이다

119:5 내 길을 굳게 정하사 주의 율례를 지키게 하소서

119:6 내가 주의 모든 계명에 주의할 때에는 부끄럽지 아니하리이다

1 Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,

    who walk according to the law of the Lord.

2 Blessed are those who keep his statutes

    and seek him with all their heart—

3 they do no wrong

    but follow his ways.

4 You have laid down precepts

    that are to be fully obeyed.

5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast

    in obeying your decrees!

6 Then I would not be put to shame

    when I consider all your commands.

7 I will praise you with an upright heart

    as I learn your righteous laws.

8 I will obey your decrees;

    do not utterly forsake me.

119:9 청년이 무엇으로 그의 행실을 깨끗하게 하리이까 주의 말씀만 지킬 따름이니이다

9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity?

    By living according to your word.

10 I seek you with all my heart;

    do not let me stray from your commands.

11 I have hidden your word in my heart

    that I might not sin against you.

12 Praise be to you, Lord;

    teach me your decrees.

13 With my lips I recount

    all the laws that come from your mouth.

14 I rejoice in following your statutes

    as one rejoices in great riches.

15 I meditate on your precepts

    and consider your ways.

16 I delight in your decrees;

    I will not neglect your word.

                  한 때 인터넷에서 많은 사람들의 감탄을 불러 일으킨 시가 있습니다. 그 시의 제목은 ‘대한민국’ 인데요. 무척 짧은 시여서 제가 한 번 읊어보겠습니다.

“가느다란 몸 부수어 쥔 총칼, 터, 평화”

어떤가요? 느낌이 좀 오시나요? 이 시에는 가제가 있습니다. 그 가제는 ‘ㄱ에서 ㅎ까지’ 입니다. 제가 다시 한 번 읊어보겠습니다.

“가느다란 몸 부수어 쥔 총칼, 터, 평화”

단 한 줄의 시이지만 ㄱ에서 ㅎ까지 자음의 순서를 가지고 분단과 전쟁의 아픔을 지닌 대한민국의 현대사를 너무나 잘 표현한 시가 아닌가 싶습니다. 자 오늘의 본문인 시편 119편도 이와 비슷한 성격을 가졌습니다. 아니 목사님, 시편 119편은 성경에서 가장 긴 장으로 유명한데 어떻게 저 짧은 시와 비교할 수 있나요? 그 이유는 저 짧은 시가 자음 14개를 사용하여 지은 시이듯이 시편 119편도 히브리어 알파벳 22개의 순서에 따라 22연으로 구성되어 있는 시이기 때문입니다. 각 연이 8절로 묶여 있어서 8절 곱하기 22개의 알파벳, 총 176절의 시가 되는 것입니다. 그래서 비록 그 길이는 길지 모르지만 형식은 같은 것이지요. 그리고 시편 119편도 단 하나의 주제를 다루고 있습니다. 그것은 바로 ‘하나님의 말씀을 즐거워하며 따르라’ 입니다. 오늘은 히브리어 알파벳 ‘알레프’ 와 ‘베트’ 로 시작하는 본문을 통해 “연약한 우리의 소망, 하나님의 말씀”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Some time ago, a short poem entitled “Republic of Korea” went viral on the internet for its impressive creativity. It is extremely brief, so let me recite it for you:

“Slender body broken, grasping rifle and sword, land, peace.”

(Korean: 가느다란 몸 부수어 쥔 총칼, 터, 평화)

Does that resonate with you? This poem has a subtitle: “From ㄱ to ㅎ.” In Korean, the first letters of each word follow the exact order of the 14 Korean consonants (ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅇ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅎ).

In just one single line, using the sequence of 14 consonants, the poet brilliantly captures the modern history of South Korea—a nation marked by division, war, and the yearning for peace.

Today’s text, Psalm 119, shares a very similar literary structure. You might ask: “Pastor, Psalm 119 is famous for being the longest chapter in the Bible! How can you compare it to such a short poem?”

While their lengths are vastly different, their literary device is identical. Just as that short poem was composed using the 14 consonants of the Korean alphabet, Psalm 119 is an acrostic poem structured around the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. It consists of 22 stanzas, with each stanza containing 8 verses—8 verses multiplied by 22 letters, making a total of 176 verses.

Moreover, despite its length, Psalm 119 focuses on a single overarching theme: Delight in God’s Word and follow it.

Today, looking at the first two stanzas—beginning with the Hebrew letters Aleph (א) and Beth (ב)—I would like to share a message titled: “God’s Word: Our Hope in Weakness.”

  그러면, ‘알레프’로 시작하는 첫번째 연, 1-8절을 함께 보시겠습니다. 이 연에서 시인은 먼저 자신이 되고 싶은 모범적인 모습에 대해서 1-3절까지 이야기 합니다. 특히 1절의 시작은 원문으로 보면 시편 1편의 시작과 같습니다. 우리 시편 1장 1절이 어떻게 시작하지요? “복있는 사람은” 이라고 시작하지요. 마찬가지입니다. 오늘 본문 1절은 ‘“복있는 사람은” 이런 사람이다’ 라고 말하고 있는 것이지요. 행위가 온전하여, 즉 여호와의 율법, 하나님의 말씀을 따라 행하는 자가 바로 그런 사람이라는 것입니다. 2절을 보니 그들은 전심으로 하나님을 구하는 사람들입니다. 3절을 보니 1절에서 말하였던 것처럼 그들은 ‘주의 도를 행하는 자다.’ 라고 시인은 복있는 사람을 정의하고 있습니다. 여호와의 율법, 여호와의 증거, 주의 도, 이 모든 것이 지칭하는 것은 바로 하나님의 말씀이지요. 말씀을 따라 행하고 전심으로 하나님을 구하는 자가 복있는 자라고 정의하는 것은 바로 이 모습 이야말로 시인 본인이 되고 싶은 모습이기 때문입니다. 4절, 주께서 주의 법도를 잘 지키라고 명령하셨습니다. 그런데 5절을 원문으로 보면 구약성경에 단 두 번만 사용된 ‘오 제발, 부디’ 와 같은 감탄사로 시작합니다. “오, 제발, 내 길을 굳게 정하여 주셔서 주의 율례를 지키게 해주시옵소서” 하고 간구하고 있는 것이지요. 무슨 말입니까? 내 힘으로 그렇게 할 수 없다는 것입니다. 내가 연약하여 나의 길이 흔들리고 있다는 것입니다. 내가 주의 율례를 지키는 것이 어렵다는 말입니다. ‘주의 율례를 지키게 하소서’ 라고 간구하고 있지 ‘주의 율례를 내가 지키리이다’ 라고 말하고 있지 않지 않습니까? 6절과 8절도 마찬가지입니다. “내가 주의 모든 계명에 주의할 때에는 부끄럽지 아니하리이다” “내가 주의 율례들을 지키오리니 나를 아주 버리지 마옵소서” 무슨 말입니까? 내가 부끄러웠고, 내가 버림 받았었지만 내가 주의 모든 말씀에 주의하고 순종하오리니 나를 이 부끄러움과 버림받음에서 건져달라는 말인 것입니다. 연약한 시인에게 오직 하나님의 말씀만이 구원이며 소망인 것입니다. 그래서 하나님께 말씀을 지키게 해달라고 간구하는 것입니다.

1. The First Stanza: Aleph (vv. 1–8) — Longing to Walk in God's Ways

Let us look at the first stanza (vv. 1–8), which begins with the letter Aleph. In verses 1–3, the psalmist paints a picture of the ideal life he longs to live.

In the original Hebrew, verse 1 begins with the exact same word as Psalm 1:1—Ashrei (“Blessed”). Verse 1 declares: “Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD.”

• Verse 2 defines them as those who keep His statutes and seek Him with all their heart.

• Verse 3 concludes that they walk in His ways.

Whether referred to as the law of the LORD, His statutes, or His ways, all these terms point to one reality: the Word of God. The psalmist defines the blessed person as one who obeys God's Word and seeks Him wholeheartedly because that is the exact person he desperately desires to be.

Yet, look at verse 4. God has commanded that His precepts be kept diligently. But in verse 5, the psalmist cries out in a way that reveals his deep vulnerability. In the original Hebrew, verse 5 opens with a passionate interjection ('Achalai')—translated as "Oh, that..." or "Oh, please!"—a rare exclamation used only twice in the entire Old Testament:

“Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!” (v. 5)

Why does he cry out like this? Because he realizes he cannot do it in his own strength! He recognizes his own frailty, that his steps are stumbling, and that keeping God’s decrees is hard for him. Notice he does not boast, "I will keep Your decrees by my own will!" Instead, he pleads, "Oh, please make my ways steadfast so that I may keep them!"

Verses 6 and 8 carry the same heart:

• "Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands." (v. 6)

• "I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me." (v. 8)

The psalmist speaks as one who has known shame and felt forsaken. Now, he vows to heed God’s Word, begging God to rescue him from that shame and abandonment. For this fragile psalmist, God’s Word is his only salvation and hope. That is why he desperately prays for God to enable him to keep it.

자, 다음 연, ‘베트’로 시작하는 9-16절을 함께 보시겠습니다. 9절은 시편 119편에서 유일하게 질문이 나옵니다. 함께 한 번 읽어보겠습니다. “청년이 무엇으로 그의 행실을 깨끗하게 하리이까? 주의 말씀만 지킬 따름이니이다.” 하나님의 말씀이야말로 우리의 행실을 정결케 하신다고 합니다. 우리는 10절에서 이런 말씀의 중요성을 다시 한번 볼 수 있습니다. 10절을 보면 그가 전심으로 주를 찾았다고 합니다. 이는 2절에서 복 있는 사람의 조건이었던 ‘전심으로 여호와를 구하는자’와 일맥상통합니다. 그런데 이렇게 전심으로 주를 찾았던 시인이 구하는 것이 무엇입니까? 자신을 주의 계명, 즉, 말씀에서 떠나지 말게 해달라는 간구를 합니다. 즉, 하나님을 찾는 마음이 있어도 여전히 말씀에서 떠날 수 있음을 알기에, 말씀 안에 머물게 해달라고 기도하는 것입니다. 말씀이 너무나 귀하기에 11절을 보니 시인은 “주의 말씀을 내 마음에 두었나이다” 라고 고백하고 있습니다. 이는 하나님의 말씀의 자리가 바로 우리의 마음임을 보여주고 있는 것이지요. 마치 가장 귀중한 보물을 깊숙이 감추어 소중이 보관하듯이 주의 말씀을 그 마음의 중심, 그 깊은 곳에 소중히 간직했다는 것입니다. 원문으로 보면 ‘나의 마음 안에’ 라는 표현이 11절 맨 앞에 놓여 문장을 시작하고 있습니다. 그만큼 말씀을 두어야 하는 공간인 마음을 강조하고 있는 것이지요. 그렇다면 말씀을 마음 속에 이렇게 간직하고만 있으면 되는 것인가? 아니지요. 12절, “찬송을 받으실 주 여호와여” 13절, “주의 입의 모든 규례들을 나의 입술로 선포하였으며” 15절, “내가 주의 법도들을 작은 소리로 읊조리며” 하나님의 입에서 나온 말씀들은 우리의 마음에만 간직 할 것이 아니라 우리의 입술을 거쳐 하나님을 찬송하고 주신 말씀을 선포하며 또 늘 작은 소리로 읊조리듯 묵상하여야 하는 것입니다. 그런데 이런 일들이 어떻게 가능한 것입니까? 그 동기의 중심은 바로 하나님의 말씀을 즐거워하는 것입니다. 기뻐하는 것입니다. 14절을 보니 마치 “모든 재물을 즐거워함같이” 하나님의 말씀을 즐거워하였다고 합니다. 16절의 말씀도 하나님의 말씀을 즐거워하는 것이 하나님의 말씀을 잊지 않는 원동력인 것처럼 이야기하지요. 하나님의 말씀을 즐거워하며 기뻐할 때에 우리는 하나님의 말씀을 나의 마음과 입에 둘 수 있고 그 말씀을 떠나지 않고 잊지 않을 수 있는 것입니다.

2. The Second Stanza: Beth (vv. 9–16) — Hiding the Word in Our Hearts

Now let us look at the second stanza (vv. 9–16), which begins with the letter Beth. Verse 9 contains the only question asked in the entirety of Psalm 119:

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.” (v. 9)

Only God’s Word has the power to cleanse our paths. In verse 10, we see the vital importance of this truth once more. The psalmist confesses that he seeks God with all his heart—echoing the condition of the blessed man in verse 2.

Yet, even while seeking God with all his heart, what does he pray for?

• "Do not let me stray from your commands!" (v. 10)

He knows that even a person seeking God can still wander away from the truth. Therefore, he prays desperately to stay tethered to God’s Word. Because God's Word is so precious, he confesses in verse 11:

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (v. 11)

The true resting place for God’s Word is the human heart. Just as one hides a priceless treasure deep within a secure vault, the psalmist stores God’s Word in the very depths of his soul. In the original Hebrew, the phrase "In my heart" (b'libbi) is placed right at the beginning of verse 11 for emphasis.

However, is storing the Word in our hearts enough? No!

• Verse 12: "Praise be to you, LORD; teach me your decrees."

• Verse 13: "With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth."

• Verse 15: "I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways."

The words coming from God's mouth are not meant to remain quietly locked in our hearts; they must flow out through our lips! We are called to praise God, proclaim His decrees, and continuously meditate on them in a low, prayerful murmur throughout the day.

What makes all of this possible? The driving force behind it is delighting in God's Word:

• Verse 14 confesses: "I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches."

• Verse 16 reiterates: "I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word."

When we truly delight and rejoice in God’s Word, we naturally store it in our hearts, proclaim it with our lips, and stay anchored in its truth without forgetting it.

말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 시편의 기자가 우리에게 전하는 말씀, 그것은 연약하고 넘어지기 쉬운 우리의 소망이 바로 하나님의 말씀이라는 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 그 소망되신 하나님의 말씀을 즐거워 할 때에 우리는 그 말씀을 우리의 마음 깊은 곳과 우리의 입술 위에 두고 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 그 말씀을 따라 행할 수 있습니다. 그것이 주의 도를 행하는, 복 있는 자의 비밀인 것입니다. 여러분, 여러분의 소망이 되는 하나님의 말씀을 즐거워하십시오, 가까이 하십시오. 늘 묵상하십이오. 그 하나님의 말씀이 여러분을 복 있는 사람의 길을 걷게 하실 것입니다.

Conclusion

The message of Psalm 119:1–16 is clear: To us who are weak, prone to stumble, and constantly failing, God's Word is our ultimate hope.

When we find true joy and delight in His Word, we will treasure it deep within our hearts, speak it daily with our lips, and walk joyfully in His ways. This is the secret of the blessed person who walks in the path of the LORD.

Delight in the Word of God, which is your hope! Draw near to it, treasure it in your heart, and meditate on it daily. May His Word guide your steps and lead you along the blessed path. Amen.
