침략자 곡의 멸망

39      그러므로 인자야 너는 곡에게 예언하여 이르기를 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 로스와 메섹과 두발 왕 곡아 내가 너를 대적하여

2      너를 돌이켜서 이끌고 북쪽 끝에서부터 나와서 이스라엘 산 위에 이르러

3      네 활을 쳐서 네 왼손에서 떨어뜨리고 네 화살을 네 오른손에서 떨어뜨리리니

4      너와 네 모든 무리와 너와 함께 있는 백성이 다 이스라엘 산 위에 엎드러지리라 내가 너를 각종 사나운 새와 들짐승에게 넘겨 먹게 하리니

5      네가 빈 들에 엎드러지리라 이는 내가 말하였음이니라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

6      내가 또 불을 마곡과 및 섬에 평안히 거주하는 자에게 내리리니 내가 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라

7      내가 내 거룩한 이름을 내 백성 이스라엘 가운데에 알게 하여 다시는 내 거룩한 이름을 더럽히지 아니하게 하리니 내가 여호와 곧 이스라엘의 거룩한 자인 줄을 민족들이 알리라 하라

8      주 여호와의 말씀이니라 볼지어다 그 날이 와서 이루어지리니 내가 말한 그 날이 이 날이라

9      이스라엘 성읍들에 거주하는 자가 나가서 그들의 무기를 불태워 사르되 큰 방패와 작은 방패와 활과 화살과 몽둥이와 창을 가지고 일곱 해 동안 불태우리라

10      이같이 그 무기로 불을 피울 것이므로 그들이 들에서 나무를 주워 오지 아니하며 숲에서 벌목하지 아니하겠고 전에 자기에게서 약탈하던 자의 것을 약탈하며 전에 자기에게서 늑탈하던 자의 것을 늑탈하리라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

Ezekiel 39:1–10 (ESV)

“And you, son of man, prophesy against Gog and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. ² And I will turn you about and drive you forward, and bring you up from the uttermost parts of the north, and lead you against the mountains of Israel. ³ Then I will strike your bow from your left hand, and will make your arrows drop out of your right hand. ⁴ You shall fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your hordes and the peoples who are with you. I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. ⁵ You shall fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Lord God. ⁶ I will send fire on Magog and on those who dwell securely in the coastlands, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

⁷ “And my holy name I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I will not let my holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. ⁸ Behold, it is coming and it will be brought about, declares the Lord God. That is the day of which I have spoken.

⁹ “Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and make fires of the weapons and burn them, shields and bucklers, bow and arrows, clubs and spears; and they will make fires of them for seven years, ¹⁰ so that they will not need to take wood out of the field or cut down any out of the forests, for they will make their fires of the weapons. They will seize the spoil of those who despoiled them, and plunder those who plundered them, declares the Lord God.

               우리는 어제의 말씀을 통해 곡으로 대표되는 제국의 연합군들이 어떻게 이스라엘을 침략하게 되는지 그리고 그들에게 진노한 하나님께서 행하실 심판이 무엇인지에 대해 보았습니다. 그리고 그 모든 일의 배후에는 하나님의 계획하심이 있는 것을 보았지요. 어제 38장의 말씀이 ‘침공의 시작과 하나님의 진노’ 를 다루고 있었다면 오늘 39장의 말씀은 이들을 맞이할 ‘철저한 패망과 그 사후 처리’의 과정을 생생하게 묘사하고 있습니다. 본문의 말씀을 통해 보여지는 그 과정은 반전과 역전의 연속입니다. 제국의 중무장한 병사들이 모두 무장 해제 될 것입니다. 가장 강력해 보였던 그들은 전장에서 명예롭게 죽는 것이 아니라 새들과 들짐승들의 먹이가 되는 불명예스러운 죽음을 맞이하게 될 것입니다. 이를 통하여 하나님께서는 당신의 이름을 바로 세우실 것입니다. 그리고 하나님의 백성들은 자신들을 약탈하던 자들을 역으로 약탈하게 될 것입니다. 그래서 오늘은 본문을 통해 “완벽한 역전의 하나님”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction

In yesterday’s passage, we saw how the imperial coalition led by Gog invaded Israel, the fierce wrath of God unleashed upon them, and the divine plan orchestrating every detail behind the scenes.

While Ezekiel 38 focused on the beginning of the invasion and God's wrath, Ezekiel 39 vividly depicts their thorough downfall and the post-war cleanup. The process revealed in today's text is a continuous series of dramatic plot twists and complete reversals:

• The heavily armed soldiers of the empire will be entirely disarmed.

• Those who seemed invincible will not die honorable deaths on the battlefield, but dishonorable ones—becoming food for birds and wild beasts.

• Through this, God will vindicate and re-establish the holiness of His name.

• God’s people, who were targeted for plunder, will turn the tables and plunder their former oppressors.

Today, through this passage, I want to share a message titled: “The God of Complete Reversal.”

              완벽한 역전의 하나님 그 첫번째, 강대해 보였던 대적들을 그 근원까지 진멸하십니다. 1절에서 하나님은 “로스와 메섹과 두발 왕 곡아, 내가 너를 대적한다”라고 말씀하십니다. 2절을 보니 그들을 대적하시기에 그들을 북방에서부터 이끄셔서 이스라엘 산들을 공격하러 나오게 하실 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 어제 말씀을 기억해보면 이들은 수많은 기병과 강력한 군대로 구름이 땅을 덮음같이 몰려올 것입니다. 그러나 강대했던 그들의 군사력을 하나님께서는 완전히 무장해제 시키십니다. 3절입니다. 그들의 활과 화살을 그들의 손에서 떨어뜨리시겠다고 말씀하십니다. 이는 단순한 활과 화살만을 말하는 것이 아니라 이들의 압도적인 군사력과 무력을 완전히 해제하시겠다는 말씀입니다. 그런 그들의 최후가 무엇입니까? 4절을 보니 그들 모두가 “다 이스라엘 산 위에 엎드러지리라” 라고 말씀하십니다. 아무 방비도 없이 평화로워 보였던 이스라엘을 강력한 군사력으로 쳐들어오던 이들은 이스라엘이 아니라 정작 그들 자신이 그 산 위에서 무력하게 죽임을 당하게된다는 것입니다. 그 뿐만이 아닙니다. 그들의 주검들은 하늘의 새와 땅의 들짐승들에게 먹잇감이 되고 만다고 합니다. 이는 고대 근동에서는 저주와 동일한 말입니다. 전사라면 응당 전장에서 싸우다 명예롭게 죽어야 할 것입니다. 그리고 그 시체는 매장되어 자신들의 선조들과 함께 땅으로 내려가야 할 것입니다. 그런데 전투는 커녕 무력하게 무장해제되어 일방적으로 죽임을 당하는 것도 모자라 그 시체까지 욕을 보인다니요. 제국의 병사로서 가장 불명예스러운 죽음이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그런데 이 두려운 심판을 하나님께서는  정하셨다고 말씀하십니다. 5절, “이는 내가 말하였음니라, 주 여호와의 말씀이니라” 땅.땅.땅. 마치 판사가 재판을 하듯 하나님께서 판결을 내리신 것입니다. 그런데 6절을 보니 더욱 경악스럽습니다. 이스라엘을 쳐들어온 군사들과 백성들 뿐만 아니라 그들의 본거지인 마곡과 해안지역까지 불을 내리신다고 하십니다. 그런데 이 워딩을 잘 보십시오. “내가 또 불을 마곡과 및 섬에 평안히 거주하는 자에게 내리리니” 평안히 거주하던 이스라엘 백성들을 쳐들어온 이들, 그런데 하나님께서 이제 마곡과 및 섬에 평안히 거주하는 자들에게 불을 내리시겠다고 하십니다. 완벽한 역전이지요. 이 완벽한 역전을 통하여 하나님께서는 “내가 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라” 라고 말씀하십니다.

1. The God of Complete Reversal Annihilates the Enemy to the Root (vv. 1–6)

First, the God of complete reversal completely destroys seemingly powerful enemies down to their very source.

In verse 1, God declares:

“I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshek and Tubal.”

In verse 2, God states that because He is against them, He will lead them from the far north and bring them against the mountains of Israel. As we recalled from yesterday's passage, they surged forward like a cloud covering the land, backed by vast cavalry and overwhelming military force.

Yet, God completely neutralizes their immense power. Look at verse 3:

“Then I will strike your bow from your left hand and make your arrows drop from your right hand.”

This is not merely about bows and arrows; it signifies the total disarmament of their military strength and lethal capabilities.

What is their ultimate fate? Verse 4 tells us: "On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you." Those who marched against peaceful, defenseless Israel in their overwhelming power end up dying helplessly on those very mountains.

Furthermore, their corpses will be left as food for all kinds of birds of prey and wild animals. In the ancient Near East, this was considered a terrifying curse. A true warrior was expected to die honorably in battle and receive a proper burial alongside his ancestors. To be disarmed without a fight, slaughtered helplessly, and left unburied to be desecrated by beasts was the most shameful death imaginable for an imperial soldier.

God declares this terrifying verdict as an absolute decree. Verse 5 concludes:

“For I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD.”

Bang! Bang! Bang! Like a judge delivering a final, unappealable sentence in court, God seals their fate.

Verse 6 reveals an even more shocking reversal: God sends fire not only upon the invading soldiers, but also upon their homelands in Magog and the coastlands! Notice the specific wording used here:

“I will send fire on Magog and on those who live in security in the coastlands...”

They originally set out to attack the Israelites who were "living in security." But now, God sends fire on those in the enemy's homeland who were "living in security." It is a complete turnaround!

Through this total reversal, God declares: “Then they will know that I am the LORD.”

                그렇습니다. 이 완벽한 역전을 통하여 하나님께서는 당신의 이름, 그 거룩한 이름을 다시 바로 세우십니다. 이스라엘의 멸망과 포로됨은 하나님의 이름이 열방들 사이에서 더럽혀지는 결과를 낳았습니다. 분명 이것은 그들이 하나님께 범죄하였기 때문에 하나님의 심판을 받아 일어난 일임에도 불구하고 말입니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 모든 제국들의 가장 강력한 군대들을 당신의 땅으로 부르셔서 그들을 그곳에서 철저히 멸망시키시고 그들의 본거지까지 응징하셔서 당신의 힘을 만천하에 드러내십니다. 이를 통해 상황을 완벽히 역전하셔서 더럽혀진 당신의 이름을, 7절,  “다시는 당신의 거룩한 이름을 더럽히지 아니하게” 하시며 당신이 “여호와 곧 이스라엘의 거룩한 자인 줄을 민족들이” 알게 하시는 것입니다.

2. Re-Establishing the Holiness of His Name (vv. 7–8)

Through this complete reversal, God restores and re-establishes the honor of His holy name.

When Israel was destroyed and dragged into exile, God’s name was profaned among the nations. Even though that judgment occurred because of Israel's own sins, the surrounding nations misinterpreted it as God's weakness.

Therefore, God summons the most powerful armies of the empires to His land, thoroughly destroys them on the mountains of Israel, and executes judgment on their homelands to display His sovereign power to the entire world.

By completely reversing the situation, God ensures:

“I will no longer let my holy name be profaned, and the nations will know that I the LORD am the Holy One in Israel.” (v. 7)

                강대했던 대적들은 완전히 진멸되었습니다. 더럽혀졌던 하나님의 이름은 다시 바로 세워졌습니다. 그리고 마지막으로 하나님의 백성들이 완벽히 역전되었습니다. 9절을 보니 하나님께서 해제하신 대적의 모든 무기들을 가지고 이스라엘 백성들이 “일곱 해 동안 불태우리라” 라고 말씀하십니다. 이미 잘 아시다시피 여기서 일곱 해란 단순한 7년의 기간을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 적의 군사력과 세력이 완전히 사라지게 되는 것을 말하는 것입니다. 우리는 7년의 소각기간 만으로도 적이 가져온 무기가 얼마나 많았는지 가늠할 수 있습니다. 이 소각의 기간동안 10절을 보니 그들은 나무를 하거나 벌목을 할 필요가 없을 정도라고 합니다. 적들은 완전히 무장 해제 되었고, 그들의 모든 무기는 이제 완전히 소각되었습니다. 이들을 노략하려 가져왔던 모든 무기들이 오히려 이들의 삶을 편리하게 만드는 땔깜이 되었다는 이 말씀은 억압받던 이들의 형편이 완전히 역전되었음을 보여줍니다. 그래서 10절 하반절은 다음과 같이 이들의 역전된 상황을 말해줍니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “전에 자기에게서 약탈하던 자의 것을 약탈하며 전에 자기에게서 늑탈하던 자의 것을 늑탈하리라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라” 아멘.

3. The Complete Reversal of God’s People (vv. 9–10)

The mighty enemy is completely wiped out. God's profaned name is restored. Finally, God’s people experience a complete reversal in their circumstances.

In verse 9, God commands the inhabitants of Israel to take the disarmed weapons of the enemy and “use them for fuel and burn them for seven years.”

As we know, "seven years" here is not just a literal duration; it symbolizes the complete and total eradication of the enemy's threat. Furthermore, a seven-year supply of fuel illustrates just how massive the enemy's arsenal was.

Verse 10 notes that the people will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut trees from the forests, because the enemy's weapons will provide all the firewood they need! The very weapons brought to plunder Israel end up enriching their daily lives and meeting their practical needs. This highlights a complete transformation in the lives of the once-oppressed.

Let us read the latter part of verse 10 together:

“They will plunder those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign LORD.” Amen!

               말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님께서는 완벽한 역전의 하나님이십니다. 그 하나님 앞에서 세상의 가장 강력한 전사들은 모두 무장해제되어 그 근본까지 진멸되고 말았습니다. 그들이 행하려했던 약탈과 늑탈은 오히려 그들이 당하게 되었고 전에 억압받던 이스라엘 백성들이 이제 그들을 약탈하고 늑탈하게 되었습니다. 그리고 이 모든 역전을 통하여 하나님께서는 당신의 거룩하신 이름을 다시 거룩하게 하시고 오직 당신만이 여호와 하나님이심을 만 천하에 드러내십니다. 완벽한 역전의 하나님께서 여러분의 삶 가운데 당신의 일을 행하시기를 축원합니다. 우리의 대적은 무장해제될 것입니다. 억압받던 우리가 이제 승리하는 자가 될 것입니다. 그리고 하나님의 영광이 드러날 것입니다. 완벽한 역전의 하나님을 바라보며 함께 기도하시겠습니다.

Conclusion

God is the God of complete reversal.

Before Him, the world's most formidable warriors are disarmed and wiped out to their very roots. The plunder and looting they intended to inflict on others fall back upon their own heads, while the once-oppressed people of God step into victory and abundance. Through this complete turnaround, God sanctifies His holy name and demonstrates to all creation that He alone is the Sovereign LORD.

I pray that the God of complete reversal will work powerfully in your lives today:

• May your spiritual enemies be disarmed.

• May those who have felt oppressed rise up as victorious overcomers.

• May the glory and holiness of God shine bright through your lives.

Let us look to the God of complete reversal as we join our hearts in prayer.
