38      여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

2      인자야 너는 마곡 땅에 있는 로스와 메섹과 두발 왕 곧 곡에게로 얼굴을 향하고 그에게 예언하여

3      이르기를 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시기를 로스와 메섹과 두발 왕 곡아 내가 너를 대적하여

4      너를 돌이켜 갈고리로 네 아가리를 꿰고 너와 말과 기마병 곧 네 온 군대를 끌어내되 완전한 갑옷을 입고 큰 방패와 작은 방패를 가지며 칼을 잡은 큰 무리와

5      그들과 함께 한 방패와 투구를 갖춘 바사와 구스와 붓과

6      고멜과 그 모든 떼와 북쪽 끝의 도갈마 족속과 그 모든 떼 곧 많은 백성의 무리를 너와 함께 끌어내리라

7      너는 스스로 예비하되 너와 네게 모인 무리들이 다 스스로 예비하고 너는 그들의 우두머리가 될지어다

8      여러 날 후 곧 말년에 네가 명령을 받고 그 땅 곧 오래 황폐하였던 이스라엘 산에 이르리니 그 땅 백성은 칼을 벗어나서 여러 나라에서 모여 들어오며 이방에서 나와 다 평안히 거주하는 중이라

9      네가 올라오되 너와 네 모든 떼와 너와 함께 한 많은 백성이 광풍 같이 이르고 구름 같이 땅을 덮으리라

10      주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 그 날에 네 마음에서 여러 가지 생각이 나서 악한 꾀를 내어

11      말하기를 내가 평원의 고을들로 올라 가리라 성벽도 없고 문이나 빗장이 없어도 염려 없이 다 평안히 거주하는 백성에게 나아가서

12      물건을 겁탈하며 노략하리라 하고 네 손을 들어서 황폐하였다가 지금 사람이 거주하는 땅과 여러 나라에서 모여서 짐승과 재물을 얻고 세상 중앙에 거주하는 백성을 치고자 할 때에

13      스바와 드단과 다시스의 상인과 그 부자들이 네게 이르기를 네가 탈취하러 왔느냐 네가 네 무리를 모아 노략하고자 하느냐 은과 금을 빼앗으며 짐승과 재물을 빼앗으며 물건을 크게 약탈하여 가고자 하느냐 하리라

Prophecy Against Gog

38 The word of the Lord came to me: ² “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him ³ and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. ⁴ And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. ⁵ Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; ⁶ Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you.

⁷ “Be ready and keep ready, you and all your hosts that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them. ⁸ After many days you will be mustered. In the latter years you will go against the land that is restored from war, the land whose people were gathered from many peoples upon the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the peoples and now dwell securely, all of them. ⁹ You will advance, coming on like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the land, you and all your hordes, and many peoples with you.

¹⁰ “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme ¹¹ and say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will fall upon the quiet people who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having no bars or gates,’ ¹² to seize spoil and carry off plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places that are now inhabited, and the people who were gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell at the center of the earth. ¹³ Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all its leaders will say to you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? Have you assembled your hosts to carry off plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to seize great spoil?’

에스겔서 37장은 그 유명한 마른뼈 골짜기 환상과 두 막대기가 하나로 합쳐지는 환상에 관한 이야기입니다.

이것은 유다와 이스라엘의 온전한 회복을 예언하는 환상입니다. 전혀 소망이 없는 죽음의 골짜기에 있는 마른 뼈와 같은 상황이 현재 이스라엘의 상황이지만, 여호와의 말씀이 선포되면 힘줄과 근육과 피부가 붙고 하나님의 생령이 함께함으로 놀라운 군대로 거듭난다는 의미의 계시입니다.

그리고 바로 이어지는 내용이 에스겔 38, 39장에 등장하는 마곡의 곡과 그 연합군과의 전쟁이야기입니다.

요한계시록은 보면 다음과 같은 묵시가 임합니다.

나와서 땅의 사방 백성 곧 곡과 마곡을 미혹하고 모아 싸움을 붙이리니 그 수가 바다의 모래 같으리라

(계 20:8)

바로 그 유명한 곡과 마곡 전쟁입니다. 그리고 계시록의 계시와 에스겔 선지자의 계시와 일맥상통합니다. 마곡은 야벳의 후손들이 거주했던 곳(창 10:2)으로, 종말에는 사탄에게 넘어가 이스라엘을 공격하다가 결국 하늘의 불로 멸망될 악의 상징으로 묘사됩니다.

에스겔 38, 39장은 바로 이 전쟁, 곧 새롭게 회복된 이스라엘의 대적인 마곡과 곡, 그리고 그 연합군과 최후로 벌이게 될 전쟁에 대해서 예언하는 것입니다.

 Introduction

Ezekiel 37 contains the famous vision of the Valley of Dry Bones and the image of two sticks joined together as one. These visions prophesy the complete restoration of Judah and Israel. Although Israel's plight at that time resembled dry bones in a hopeless valley of death, the revelation promised that when the word of the LORD is proclaimed, sinews, flesh, and skin would cover them, and God's breath of life would transform them into a vast army.

Immediately following this, Chapters 38 and 39 present the story of the war against Gog of Magog and his coalition of armies. In the Book of Revelation, we see a parallel apocalyptic vision:

This refers to the famous War of Gog and Magog. The vision given to John in Revelation aligns directly with the prophecy of Ezekiel. Magog was originally inhabited by the descendants of Japheth (Genesis 10:2). In the end times, it is depicted as a symbol of evil—taken over by Satan to attack Israel, only to be ultimately destroyed by fire from heaven.

Ezekiel 38 and 39 prophesy this very conflict: the final war waged by Gog of Magog and his allied forces against a newly restored Israel.

전쟁과 회복의 주체이신 하나님 (1~9절)

에스겔 선지서의 흐름을 보면 전쟁의 위협, 외부 민족과 같은 공동체를 흔드는 외부적 요인과 타락한 지도자와 같은 내부적 요인이 모두 사라지고 깨끗하게 정리가 된 후에 새로운 성전 건축을 위한 청사진이 40장에서 48장까지 선포됩니다. 그리고 여기서 가장 중요한 에스겔 선지자의 신학은 이 모든 일의 주체가 다름아닌 여호와 하나님이라는 것입니다.

그런 점에서 마곡의 곡과의 전쟁은 필연적입니다. 그래서 학자들은 오늘 본문이나 계시록이 말하는 마곡의 곡과의 최후의 전쟁이 과연 어떤 전쟁인지에 대해서 오랫동안 연구했습니다. 특히 마곡의 왕인 곡의 정체가 더욱 궁금합니다. 학자들은 그에 대해서 마치 적그리스도와 같이 특정할 수 없지만 시대에 따라 인류 가운데 여러가지 모습으로 나타났다고 말합니다. 예를들자면 스탈린, 히틀러와 같은 작자들이라는 말입니다. 하지만 정확하게 곡이 누구인지 특정하여 말할 수 없습니다.

그보다 중요한 것은 오늘 본문과 같은 어려운 본문에서 우리가 얻어야 할 교훈과 하나님의 말씀이 무엇이냐 하는 것입니다. 이스라엘, 곧 예루살렘이 하나님의 은혜로 회복되어 이제서야 겨우 에덴동산과 같이 되었습니다. 그런데 다시 마곡의 곡과 그 연합군에 의한 위험에 직면하게 됩니다.

더 당황스러운 것은 그들을 부추겨 전쟁 준비를 하게 하시는 분이 하나님이라는 사실입니다. 하나님은 곡에게 스스로 준비하여 그 연합군의 우두머리가 될 것을 명령합니다(7). 그들은 말과 기마병, 방패와 칼, 투구로 완전하게 무장하고 전쟁에 임합니다. 그런데 하나님은 이 전쟁에 대해서 다음과 같이 선포하십니다.

곡아 내가 너를 대적하여(3b) 너를 돌이켜 갈고리로 네 아가리를 꿰고…(4a)

그 많은 백성의 무리를 너와 함께 끌어내리라(6b)

곡이 스스로 준비하는듯한 전쟁이지만, 사실은 그 배후에는 하나님의 주권적인 섭리가 있다는 선포입니다.

그렇습니다. 인생만사 모든 것이 하나님의 주권 가운데 이루어집니다. 특히 전쟁은 더욱 그렇습니다. 또한 하나님의 그 통치하심은 아군 뿐 아니라, 적군에게까지도 이른다는 사실입니다.

여러 날 후 곧 말년(8a)이라는 표현은 지극히 종말론적입니다. 계시록에서 말한 그 곡과 마곡의 전쟁이 바로 이것입니다. 이 때는 최후의 전쟁의 때이며, 인류의 종말이요, 예수님의 재림의 때입니다. 

1. God, the Sovereign Agent of War and Restoration (vv. 1–9)

Looking at the overarching movement of Ezekiel, once external threats that shake the community (such as hostile foreign nations) and internal corruption (such as bad leaders) are removed and swept clean, the blueprint for the new Temple is declared in Chapters 40 through 48. The most vital theological emphasis throughout Ezekiel is that the true driver behind all these events is none other than Yahweh, God Himself.

In that sense, the war with Gog of Magog is essential and inevitable. Consequently, scholars have long debated the exact nature of this final war described in Ezekiel and Revelation. They have especially pondered the true identity of Gog, king of Magog. Scholars suggest that while Gog cannot be pinpointed to a single historical figure—much like the Antichrist—he manifests throughout human history in various forms. Figures such as Stalin or Hitler serve as prime historical examples. Yet, we cannot definitively limit Gog's identity to any single individual.

What matters far more is grasping the core message and lessons God intends for us through this challenging passage. By God’s grace, Israel—specifically Jerusalem—had finally been restored to a state like the Garden of Eden. Yet suddenly, they face a fresh threat from Gog of Magog and his allied forces.

Even more disorienting is the fact that God Himself instigates and directs their preparations for battle. God commands Gog to prepare himself and assume command as the head of the coalition (v. 7). They march into battle fully equipped with horses, horsemen, shields, swords, and helmets. Yet concerning this war, God proclaims:

Though Gog appears to wage this war of his own volition, God explicitly declares that His sovereign providence orchestrates everything behind the scenes.

Indeed, all human affairs unfold under God's sovereign rule. This is especially true of warfare. Furthermore, His divine sovereignty extends not only over His allies, but over His enemies as well.

The phrase "after many days, in the future years" (v. 8a) is profoundly eschatological. This directly points to the War of Gog and Magog foretold in Revelation—the final battle at the end of human history, the culmination of the age, and the second coming of Jesus Christ.

다른 속내와 같은 결말 (10~13절)

곡이 전쟁을 벌이는 목적은 결국에는 세상 중앙에 거주하는 백성(12), 곧 하나님의 백성들을 겁탈하고 노략하기 위해서입니다. 사탄은 결국 하나님의 자녀들을 영적, 육체적, 물질적으로 겁탈하는 존재들입니다.

주변에 있는 나머지 존재들(스바, 드단, 다시스) 역시 동일한 마음으로 세상 중앙에 거주하는 백성들이 가진 것들에 관심을 보입니다. 곡과 같은 마음입니다.

이제 겨우 예루살렘이 회복되어 에덴동산과 같이 되었는데, 또 다시 마곡의 곡과 연합군의 침략이라니요! 예루살렘 주민으로서는 상당히 낙담이 되는 소식입니다. 거기에다가 이 배후가 하나님이라는 사실이 더욱 실망케 합니다. 하지만 이 전쟁은 예루살렘의 범죄함 때문에 벌어지는 전쟁이 아닙니다.

그러므로 그 배후가 하나님이라는 사실은 오히려 예루살렘 주민들에게 안정감을 줍니다. 본문이 말하고자 하는 것은 결국 모든 것이 하나님의 주권 가운데 벌어지는 사건들이고, 하나님의 완전한 새성전에 이르기 위해 반드시 거쳐야 하는 과정이 마곡의 곡과의 전쟁이라는 것입니다.

2. Different Motives, One Foreordained Outcome (vv. 10–13)

Gog's ultimate motive in waging war is to plunder and pillage the people living at "the center of the land" (v. 12)—that is, God’s covenant people. Ultimately, Satan seeks to plunder God's children spiritually, physically, and materially.

The surrounding nations (Sheba, Dedan, and Tarshish) share this same dark desire, greedily eyeing the wealth of those dwelling at the center of the land. Their hearts align with Gog's sinister motives.

Just as Jerusalem was finally restored to flourish like the Garden of Eden, they face an invasion from Gog of Magog and his allies! To the inhabitants of Jerusalem, this news must have felt deeply discouraging. To learn that God Himself was behind these circumstances might have seemed even more perplexing.

However, this conflict is not a judgment brought on by Jerusalem's sin. Paradoxically, knowing that God is orchestrating everything brings deep comfort and security to His people. What the text teaches us is that every event unfolds under God's absolute sovereignty, and that the war with Gog of Magog is a necessary gateway leading to God's ultimate, new Temple.

우리 인생도 마찬가지입니다. 조금 괜찮아지나 싶으면, 어느새 또 다른 인생의 위기가 닥쳐 옵니다. 문제는 하나님이 분명히 함께 하시는 중에도 이런 일들이 벌어집니다. 그래서 때로는 하나님을 의심합니다. 그러나 우리는 그럴 필요가 없습니다.

이 모든 일은 온전히 하나님 손 위에 올려져 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 모든 것을 세밀하게 인도하고 있습니다. 그러므로 불안해 하거나, 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 완전한 하나님의 새성전으로 가기 위해서 악한 영들과의 영적인 전쟁은 피할 수 없는 전쟁입니다.

마른뼈와 같은 우리의 상황을 아시는 하나님께서 생명이 있을 것을 명령하시고, 이 마지막 곡과의 전쟁에서 결국에는 우리로 승리하게 하실 것입니다. 때론 힘들 때도 있지만, 이것이 하나님이 예비하신 완전한 새성전에 이르는 과정임을 믿고, 확신하고, 끝까지 이 전쟁에서 승리하는 성도되시기를 주님 이름으로 축복합니다.  

Conclusion

Our lives follow a similar path. Just as things seem to settle down, another crisis inevitably strikes. Worse yet, these trials often hit even when God is undeniably present with us. In those moments, we may be tempted to doubt Him.

Yet we have no reason to fear or doubt. Every circumstance rests securely in the hands of God. He guides every single detail of our lives with intricate care. Therefore, we need not succumb to anxiety or fear.

Spiritual warfare against evil forces is an unavoidable step on our journey toward God's glorious, final Temple. The God who knows our dry-bone state commands life to enter us; He will ultimately grant us total victory in this final spiritual battle.

Though the journey may be challenging, I pray in the name of the Lord that you will remain confident that this is the process toward the perfect new Temple God has prepared, standing victorious in this battle to the very end.
