32      주 여호와의 말씀이니라 내가 이렇게 행함은 너희를 위함이 아닌 줄을 너희가 알리라 이스라엘 족속아 너희 행위로 말미암아 부끄러워하고 한탄할지어다

33      주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 너희를 모든 죄악에서 정결하게 하는 날에 성읍들에 사람이 거주하게 하며 황폐한 것이 건축되게 할 것인즉

34      전에는 지나가는 자의 눈에 황폐하게 보이던 그 황폐한 땅이 장차 경작이 될지라

35      사람이 이르기를 이 땅이 황폐하더니 이제는 에덴 동산 같이 되었고 황량하고 적막하고 무너진 성읍들에 성벽과 주민이 있다 하리니

36      너희 사방에 남은 이방 사람이 나 여호와가 무너진 곳을 건축하며 황폐한 자리에 심은 줄을 알리라 나 여호와가 말하였으니 이루리라

37      주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 그래도 이스라엘 족속이 이같이 자기들에게 이루어 주기를 내게 구하여야 할지라 내가 그들의 수효를 양 떼 같이 많아지게 하되

38      제사 드릴 양 떼 곧 예루살렘이 정한 절기의 양 무리 같이 황폐한 성읍을 사람의 떼로 채우리라 그리한즉 그들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알리라 하셨느니라

Ezekiel 36:32–38 (ESV)

³² It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.

³³ “Thus says the Lord God: On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. ³⁴ And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. ³⁵ And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ ³⁶ Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

³⁷ “Thus says the Lord God: This also I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: to increase their people like a flock. ³⁸ Like the flock for sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

매슬로우의 5단계 욕구 이론을 보면 다음과 같습니다. 

1단계 생리적 욕구Physiological Needs (식욕, 수면욕, 호흡 등),

2 단계 안전의 욕구Safety Needs (개인 안부, 신체적 안전, 재정적 안정 등),

3단계 사랑과 소속의 욕구/사회적 욕구Love and Belonging/Social Needs (우정, 애정, 가족애 등),

4단계 존중의 욕구Esteem Needs (성취, 성과의 인정, 자존감, 지위 등),

5단계 자아실현의 욕구Self-Actualization Needs

보시는 바와 같이 인정의 욕구는 가장 최종의 단계에 근접한 4단계의 욕구입니다. 그만큼 고차원적인 인간의 욕구가 인정의 욕구입니다. 인간은 누구나 나를 알아주고, 인정해주는 그러한 타인이나 공동체, 가족을 원합니다.

이러한 인간의 욕구는 어디에서 왔을까요? 저는 성경을 보면 볼수록 이러한 욕구가 하나님으로부터라는 사실을 발견합니다. 인간은 하나님의 형상으로 지어졌습니다. 그리고 그 형상은 외모를 말하는 것이 아니라, 우리의 고귀한 내면을 말하는 것입니다.

하나님은 피조물들에게 인정 받기를 원하십니다. 이것은 유치함이 아닌 원초적인 순수함입니다. 하나님을 인정하고, 알아드리고, 칭찬하는 것을 다른 말로 하면 찬양입니다. 그리고 그 찬양에 곡을 붙인 것을 찬송이라고 합니다. 그분의 성품, 하신 일, 능력 등을 노래로 찬양하는 것입니다. 그래서 하나님은 찬양을 좋아하시고, 찬송 중에 거하십니다.

이스라엘의 찬송 중에 계시는 주여 주는 거룩하시니이다 (시 22:3)

Introduction: The Desire for Recognition

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs outlines human motivation in five stages:

1. Physiological Needs (food, sleep, breathing, etc.)

2. Safety Needs (personal security, physical health, financial stability, etc.)

3. Love and Belonging / Social Needs (friendship, affection, family, etc.)

4. Esteem Needs (achievement, recognition, self-esteem, status, etc.)

5. Self-Actualization Needs

The desire for recognition (Esteem Needs) lies at the fourth level, near the very top. It represents a high-level human motivation. Every person longs to be acknowledged and appreciated by others, whether in a family, a community, or a relationship.

Where does this innate human desire come from? The more I read the Bible, the more I realize that this desire originates in God. Human beings were created in the image of God—an image referring not to our physical appearance, but to our noble inner self.

God Himself desires to be acknowledged and recognized by His creation. This is not out of petty vanity, but out of foundational, pure relationship. Acknowledging, honoring, and praising God is what we call praise (chanyang). Setting that praise to music creates a hymn (chansong)—singing of His character, His deeds, and His power. That is why God delights in praise and dwells within it:

“Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3)

회복의 은혜를 누리기 위해서는 회개와 겸손이 있어야 합니다 (32~36절)

오늘 본문은 이렇게 시작합니다. 내가 이렇게 행함은 너희를 위함이 아닌 줄을 너희가 알리라(32a)

먼저 이렇게 행함 은 무엇을 의미합니까? 그것은 포로 되었던 이스라엘을 회복 시키는 것을 의미합니다. 폐허가 된 예루살렘 성과 성벽을 다시 회복시키고, 사람들을 모으시며, 풍성한 열매들을 주셔서 에덴동산과 같이 회복시켜 주실 것이라는 말씀입니다.

현재 이스라엘 예루살렘을 보십시오. 전세계에서 가장 강력한 나라 중 하나가 되었고, 예루살렘은 많은 사람들이 거주하는 도시이고, 전 세계 경제를 움직이는 손들이 대부분 유대인들이라고 합니다. 하나님은 예루살렘의 에덴동산과 같은 회복을 약속하셨고, 실제로 이루신 것입니다.

그런데 하나님은 이렇게 하시는 것이 너희를 위함이 아닌 줄 알아야 한다고 말씀 하십니다. 여기서 너희를 위함이 아닌 줄을 새번역 성경은 너희 때문이 아니다로, 공동번역은 너희가 훌륭하기 때문이 아니다로 번역을 합니다. 즉 회복의 원인이 이스라엘의 그 무엇에서 기인하지 않는다는 의미입니다.

그렇다면 하나님은 무엇 때문에 이스라엘과 예루살렘에게 회복의 은혜를 주시는 것일까요? 이 질문에 대한 해답은 결론에서 확인하도록 하겠습니다.

하나님은 선지자를 통해서 먼저 회복의 은혜를 주실 때 이스라엘이 어떤 태도를 취해야 하는지를 알려주십니다. 먼저는 이스라엘 족속아 너희 행위로 말미암아 부끄러워하고 한탄할지어다(32b)입니다.

즉 하나님께서 예루살렘에 에덴동산과 같은 회복의 은혜를 주실 때 이스라엘 사람들은 회개해야 합니다.

이것은 에스겔 선지자의 독특한 회복의 신학입니다. 그런데 이것이 너무도 중요합니다. 회복의 은헤, 구원의 은혜는 너무 감사하고 감격스러운 것이지만, 동시에 균형을 가져야 하는 태도가 바로 에스겔이 말하는 회복의 신학입니다.

에스겔의 회복의 신학은 자신의 지은 죄에 대해서 한탄하고 굴욕적으로 생각하는 마음입니다. 이 마음은 회복의 은혜를 유지하는데 필수입니다. 왜냐하면 그래야 같은 죄를 반복하지 않기 때문입니다. 자신이 저지른 죄에 대한 혐오의 마음과 수치스럽게 생각하는 마음이 있어야 합니다. 동시에 회복(구원)에 대한 감사와 감격이 절묘하게 균형을 이루어야 하는 것입니다. 그렇게 할 때 하나님의 주신 회복의 은혜를 내 삶 속에 담아낼 수 있는 것입니다.

1. To Enjoy Restoration, There Must Be Repentance and Humility (vv. 32–36)

Today’s text begins with a striking declaration:

“It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord GOD; let that be known to you.” (v. 32a)

What does God mean by “I will act”? He refers to restoring exiled Israel—rebuilding the ruined city and walls of Jerusalem, gathering His scattered people, and granting abundant harvest to make the land flourish like the Garden of Eden.

Consider modern Israel and Jerusalem today: it has become one of the most influential nations in the world, Jerusalem is a thriving metropolis, and Jewish leaders significantly shape global finance. God promised an Eden-like restoration for Jerusalem, and He literally fulfilled it.

Yet God reminds them: “Know that it is not for your sake.” Other translations render this as "not because of you" or "not because you are righteous." The cause and merit of restoration do not lie in anything Israel did.

How, then, should His people respond when receiving this grace of restoration? God instructs them through the prophet:

“Be ashamed and dismayed for your ways, O house of Israel.” (v. 32b)

When God bestows Eden-like restoration, His people must respond with repentance. This is Ezekiel’s distinct theology of restoration.

Ezekiel’s restoration theology emphasizes maintaining a heart that grieves over past sins and feels a healthy sense of shame for them. This humility is essential to sustaining the grace of restoration, for it prevents us from repeating the same transgressions. We must hold a deep aversion to our past sins alongside an overwhelmed, joyful gratitude for God's salvation. When these two attitudes are delicately balanced, we can truly embody and steward the restoring grace God bestows upon our lives.

회복의 은혜를 누리기 위해서는 진실한 기도가 있어야 합니다 (37~38절)

오늘 본문은 여호와의 말씀이니라(32, 33, 36, 37)가 네 번이나 반복하여 나옵니다. 이것은 말씀 하신 것을  반드시 이루겠다는 하나님의 의지요, 서명입니다. 인생의 회복과 구원은 오직 하나님의 의지에 의하여 이루어집니다. 그런데 이어서 놀라운 말씀을 하십니다.

그래도 이스라엘 족속이 이같이 자기들에게 이루어 주기를 내게 구하여야 할지라(37b) 그래도… 입니다. 하나님께서 회복과 구원을 약속하셨지만, 그것을 이루는 과정에서 하나님은 이스라엘의 기도를 요청하시고, 그 기도를 통해서 일하시겠다는 말씀입니다.

이 구절은 왜 우리가 기도해야 하는지에 대한 너무도 명확한 명분을 알려줍니다. 기도는 하나님의 명령입니다. 기도는 하나님이 일하시는 방법입니다. 그러므로 우리는 기도해야 하는 것입니다. 아무리 하나님의 이름을 걸고 약속하셨다고 하지만, 그 일을 이루시기 위해서 우리의 기도를 요청하시는 것입니다. 그러므로 기도해야 하고, 그래서 기도해야 합니다. 우리가 기도할 때 하나님이 회복을 이루십니다.  

2. To Enjoy Restoration, There Must Be Sincere Prayer (vv. 37–38)

In today's text, the phrase "declares the Lord GOD" is repeated four times (vv. 32, 33, 36, 37). This serves as God’s divine signature and solemn oath that what He has spoken will surely come to pass. The restoration and salvation of human life rest entirely upon God's sovereign will.

Yet right after this affirmation, God makes a remarkable request:

“This also I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them...” (v. 37b)

"This also I will let them ask..."—Even though God has promised restoration and decreed salvation, He deliberately chooses to work through the prayers of His people.

This verse provides a clear mandate for why we must pray: Prayer is God’s command, and prayer is God’s chosen method of working. Though He has bound His promise to His own holy Name, He invites and requests our prayers to bring that promise to fulfillment. When we pray, God executes His restoration.

마지막으로 앞부분에서 던졌던 질문에 대한 답을 나누고자 합니다. 이스라엘 위해서도 아니고, 이스라엘이 훌륭해서도 아니라면 왜 하나님은 예루살렘에 회복의 은혜를 주시는 것일까요? 해답은 38절 하반절입니다.

그리한즉 그들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알리라(38b) 완전하게 폐허가 되었던 예루살렘을 다시 에덴동산과 같이 회복시키면, 모든 열방이 여호와께서 온 천하의 왕이시며 하나님이라는 사실을 알게 되기 때문입니다.

이스라엘을 위한 것이 아닌, 하나님 당신의 거룩한 이름을 위한 것입니다. 우리 인간들이 온갖 범죄와 불순종과 악행으로 실추 시켰던 하나님의 명예를 하나님 스스로 회복하시겠다는 의미인 것입니다.

우리는 찬양 받으시기에 합당하신 주님께 합당한 영광과 찬양을 올려드려야 합니다. 그리고 늘 우리 자신이 저지른 죄악의 부끄러움을 기억하고 수치스럽게 생각해야 합니다. 동시에 그럼에도 당신의 영광을 위하여 우리를 회복시키시고, 구원하시는 하나님의 선하심과 아름다움을 감사하고, 그 인자하심에 감격하며 찬양해야 합니다. 하나님이 이루시기 때문입니다.

그래도 우리는 우리의 진실한 기도를 통해서 하나님이 이루시고자 하는 일에 참여해야 합니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도를 통해서 회복을 이루시는 분입니다. 날마다 주시는 이 회복의 은혜를 누리고, 하나님의 그 영광에 동참하는 은혜가 있기를 기도합니다.

Conclusion: For the Sake of His Holy Name

Let us return to the question raised at the beginning: If it is not for Israel’s sake, nor because they were great, why does God extend the grace of restoration to Jerusalem?

The answer lies in the latter half of verse 38:

“Then they will know that I am the LORD.” (v. 38b)

When God rebuilds completely devastated Jerusalem into a place like the Garden of Eden, all nations will witness it and know that Jehovah is the Sovereign King and God over all the earth.

He acts not for Israel's merit, but for the sake of His own holy Name. God chooses to vindicate His reputation, which had been dishonored among the nations by human sin, disobedience, and rebellion.

Today's Application

1. Offer Worthy Praise: Let us give glory, honor, and heartfelt praise to the Lord, who alone is worthy.

2. Maintain Humility and Gratitude: Let us humbly remember the shame of our past sins, while continually marveling at God's goodness and mercy in saving us for His glory.

3. Participate Through Prayer: Let us actively participate in God's restoring work through sincere, persistent prayer.

May we daily enjoy the grace of His restoration and share in the blessing of His eternal glory.
