이스라엘의 회복

21      내가 내 영광을 여러 민족 가운데에 나타내어 모든 민족이 내가 행한 심판과 내가 그 위에 나타낸 권능을 보게 하리니

22      그 날 이후에 이스라엘 족속은 내가 여호와 자기들의 하나님인 줄을 알겠고

23      여러 민족은 이스라엘 족속이 그 죄악으로 말미암아 사로잡혀 갔던 줄을 알지라 그들이 내게 범죄하였으므로 내 얼굴을 그들에게 가리고 그들을 그 원수의 손에 넘겨 다 칼에 엎드러지게 하였으되

24      내가 그들의 더러움과 그들의 범죄한 대로 행하여 그들에게 내 얼굴을 가리었었느니라

25      그러므로 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 이제 내 거룩한 이름을 위하여 열심을 내어 야곱의 사로잡힌 자를 돌아오게 하며 이스라엘 온 족속에게 사랑을 베풀지라

26      그들이 그 땅에 평안히 거주하고 두렵게 할 자가 없게 될 때에 부끄러움을 품고 내게 범한 죄를 뉘우치리니

27      내가 그들을 만민 중에서 돌아오게 하고 적국 중에서 모아 내어 많은 민족이 보는 데에서 그들로 말미암아 나의 거룩함을 나타낼 때라

28      전에는 내가 그들이 사로잡혀 여러 나라에 이르게 하였거니와 후에는 내가 그들을 모아 고국 땅으로 돌아오게 하고 그 한 사람도 이방에 남기지 아니하리니 그들이 내가 여호와 자기들의 하나님인 줄을 알리라

29      내가 다시는 내 얼굴을 그들에게 가리지 아니하리니 이는 내가 내 영을 이스라엘 족속에게 쏟았음이라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

Ezekiel 39:21–29 (ESV)

²¹ “And I will set my glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid on them. ²² The house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God, from that day forward. ²³ And the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they dealt so treacherously with me that I hid my face from them and gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword. ²⁴ I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their transgressions, and hid my face from them.

The Lord Will Restore Israel

²⁵ “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for my holy name. ²⁶ They shall forget their shame and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when they dwell securely in their land with none to make them afraid, ²⁷ when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies’ lands, and through them have vindicated my holiness in the sight of many nations. ²⁸ Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then assembled them into their own land. I will leave none of them remaining among the nations anymore. ²⁹ And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”

용안龍顔을 문자 그대로 해석하면 용의 얼굴입니다. 그런데 일반적으로 이 단어는 황제나 왕의 얼굴을 말할 때 사용합니다. 그만큼 보기 어렵고, 위험하며, 권위와 힘이 있다는 의미로 그렇게 부르게 되었을 것입니다. 이처럼 얼굴은 항상 그 존재의 인격과 능력, 인품을 나타내는 의미로 사용됩니다.

신학대학원을 다닐 때 매주 1회 학교 채플시간이 있었습니다. 어느날 구약학 교수님이 설교를 하시고 축도를 하시는데, 일반적으로 사용하는 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 하나님의 사랑과 성령의 교통하심이 너희 무리와 함께 있을지어다(고후 13:13) 로 축도를 하지 않고, 구약을 이용하여 축도를 하셨습니다. 

여호와는 네게 복을 주시고 너를 지키시기를 원하며

여호와는 그의 얼굴을 네게 비추사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며

여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 드사 평강 주시기를 원하노라 할지니라 하라

(민 6:24~26)

소위 말하는 아론의 축복입니다. 하나님께서 이렇게 기도하면 당신께서 이스라엘 자손을 축복하시겠다고 약속하신 축복의 기도문입니다. 이런 축도는 처음이었고, 아주 신선하고 충격적이었습니다. 사실 반드시 고린도후서 본문으로 축도해야 하는 것이 아닌데, 우리 모두가 습관이나 전통에 익숙했던 것입니다.

Introduction

The Korean word Yongan (龍顔) literally translates to "dragon's face," but historically, it was used to refer exclusively to the face of an emperor or king. It carried a sense of awe—something rare to behold, majestic, dangerous, and filled with supreme authority and power. In the same way, throughout Scripture, a person's "face" represents their presence, character, dignity, and power.

During my seminary days, we gathered once a week for chapel. One day, a professor of Old Testament delivered the sermon and gave the final benediction. Instead of using the traditional New Testament benediction from 2 Corinthians 13:14 ("May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all"), he pronounced a blessing directly from the Old Testament:

This is the famous Aaronic Blessing—the prayer through which God promised He would bless the children of Israel. Hearing it as a chapel benediction for the first time felt refreshingly moving and profound. It reminded us how often we become locked into routine or tradition, forgetting the richness of God's Word.

가리시는 하나님 (21~24절)

오늘 본문에 등장하는 주요 단어가 하나님의 얼굴입니다. 하나님의 은혜와 영광, 자비와 사랑의 돌보심을 상징하는 하나님의 얼굴을 이스라엘에게서 가리신다고 선언하십니다. 물론 과거형 “가리셨다.” 입니다.

오늘 본문은 마곡의 곡과의 전쟁을 승리로 이끄실 하나님께서, 승리 후에 이스라엘 백성들과 왜 이런 일들이 벌어졌는지 등에 대해서 결산하는 내용입니다.

그렇다면 하나님은 왜 얼굴을 가리셨고, 얼굴을 가리신 결과가 무엇인가요?

하나님이 얼굴을 가리시고 당신의 은혜를 이스라엘에서 거두신 이유는 그들의 죄악으로 말미암아서입니다.

하나님께서는 분명하게 내가 그들의 더러움과 그들의 범죄한 대로 행하여 그들에게 내 얼굴을 가렸다(24) 고 말씀하십니다. 그렇습니다. 우리의 범죄는 하나님의 은혜와 돌보심을 밀어냅니다.

완전하게 거룩하신 하나님은 우리와 함께 하시기 위해 거룩할 것을 명령하신 것입니다.

그러므로 우리는 최선을 다해서 거룩하신 아버지를 닮고자 애써야 합니다.

이스라엘의 범죄로 말미암아 하나님이 얼굴을 가리셨습니다. 우리 하나님은 가리시는 하나님이십니다.

그 결과 이스라엘이 바벨론에 사로잡혀 갔습니다. 원수들에게 넘겨졌고, 칼에 엎드지고 말았습니다.

이것이 이스라엘의 범죄로 말미암아 하나님의 얼굴이 가려진 결과입니다. 

참으로 범죄가 무섭습니다. 사랑하는 아버지의 얼굴을 대면하지 못하도록 합니다.

그리고 그 죄의 쓰디쓴 대가를 맛보게 합니다.

아버지의 얼굴을 볼 수 없는 것도 괴로운데, 대적들의 공격까지 감수해야 한다면 너무도 힘든 일입니다.

그렇다면 어떻게 다시 회복하여 하나님 아버지의 얼굴을 대면할 수 있을까요?

1. The God Who Hides His Face (vv. 21–24)

A central theme in today’s passage is the face of God. God’s face symbolizes His grace, glory, mercy, and loving protection. Yet in this text, God declares that He once hid His face from Israel (in the past tense: "I hid my face").

Following the prophetic victory over Gog of Magog, this passage serves as a spiritual divine accounting, explaining to Israel why they had undergone such intense suffering and exile in the past.

Why did God hide His face, and what were the consequences?

God hid His face and withdrew His grace from Israel because of their persistent sin. He explicitly declares:

Our sin pushes away the conscious experience of God's grace and protective presence. Because God is infinitely holy, He commands us to be holy if we are to abide with Him. Therefore, we must strive with all our heart to reflect the holiness of our Heavenly Father.

Because of Israel's sin, God turned His face away. Our God is a God who hides His face in holy discipline. As a result, Israel was dragged into Babylonian captivity, handed over to their enemies, and struck down by the sword. This was the bitter fruit of having God's face hidden from them.

Sin is truly terrifying. It blocks us from beholding the face of our loving Father and forces us to taste its bitter consequences. Not only is it painful to lose sight of the Father's face, but enduring the attacks of adversaries makes the suffering unbearable.

How, then, can we be restored to stand face-to-face with God once again?

나타내시는 하나님 (25~29절)

애석하게도 우리 입장에서는 그 어떤 일도 할 수 없습니다.

완전한 자발성을 가지신 하나님을 움직일 수 있는 것은 하나님 자신밖에는 없습니다.

완전한 자발성, 이것은 오로지 스스로 계신 분에게만 있는 특성입니다.

오늘 본문에서 하나님은 그것을 여호와의 열심(25)이라고 말씀 하십니다.

하나님 스스로 당신의 얼굴을 이스라엘에게로 향합니다. 왜 그렇게 하실까요?

먼저는 당신의 거룩한 이름을 위한 열심입니다(25, 27).

스스로 있는 분의 거룩한 이름을 위하여, 다시 이스라엘을 돌아오게 하시고, 사랑하시고, 구원하십니다.

다음은 모든 열방과 이스라엘이 하나님의 영광과 권능과 여호와만이 유일하신 하나님이심 알게 하려 하심입니다(21, 22, 28). 

끝으로 이스라엘이 회개하게 하려 하심입니다(26).

중요한 것은 이스라엘이 회개했기 때문에 구원, 곧 하나님의 얼굴을 다시 나타내시는 것이 아닙니다.

얼굴을 다시 나타내신 하나님의 은혜 때문에 이스라엘이 부끄러움을 품고 하나님께 범한 죄를 뉘우치게 하는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 회개도 하나님의 은혜 없이는 할 수 없는 것입니다. 그래서 구원은 전적인 하나님의 역사요, 은혜입니다.

하나님은 다시는 당신의 얼굴을 이스라엘에게서 가리지 아니할 것이라고 약속하십니다.

그렇다면 이스라엘이 다시 범죄하지 않는다는 의미인가요?

어떻게 그럴 수 있을까요? 그 비밀은 하나님의 영입니다. 이 예언은 훗날 이 땅에 오실 예수님의 십자가와 부활, 그리고 이어질 성령 강림의 연속적인 역사에 대한 예언이라 할 수 있습니다. 비록 죄인인 인간들은 반복적으로 범죄하지만, 예수님의 십자가의 죄사함과 성령의 인치심으로 결국 영적인 이스라엘, 곧 하나님의 백성들은 구원을 얻어 영원히 왕의 얼굴 빛이 가득한 천국에 머물 것을 예언하는 말씀입니다.

2. The God Who Reveals His Face (vv. 25–29)

Tragically, on our own, we can do absolutely nothing to restore this relationship.

Because God possesses absolute sovereignty and complete self-determination, only God Himself can move His own heart. In verse 25, God attributes this divine initiative to His own passionate commitment—His holy zeal:

God turns His face back toward Israel entirely on His own initiative. Why does He do this?

1. For the zeal of His holy name (vv. 25, 27): For the honor of His own uncreated, holy name, He gathers, loves, and redeems Israel once again.

2. So that all nations and Israel will know Him (vv. 21, 22, 28): So that the world may behold His glory, power, and sovereign Godhead—recognizing that He alone is the LORD.

3. To bring His people to true repentance (v. 26): Crucially, God does not reveal His face because Israel repented first. Rather, it is the overwhelming grace of God turning His face back toward them that leads Israel to feel healthy shame and genuinely repent of their treachery. True repentance itself is impossible without the prior initiative of divine grace. Salvation is entirely God’s work and gift.

God makes a monumental promise in verse 29: “I will no longer hide my face from them.”

Does this mean Israel would never sin again? How could that be possible for fragile human beings?

The secret lies in the outpouring of His Spirit: "for I will pour out my Spirit on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD" (v. 29). This prophecy points forward to the redemptive arc of Jesus Christ—His cross, resurrection, and the subsequent outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Though human sinners repeatedly fail, Christ's sacrificial atonement and the sealing of the Holy Spirit ensure that spiritual Israel—the church, God's covenant people—will be saved and dwell forever in the radiant light of the King’s face in heaven.

지금도 하나님은 동일하게 역사하십니다. 범죄하면, 그것에 대해서 심판하시고, 가르치십니다.

때로는 얼굴을 살짝 돌려 마치 우리를 떠난 것처럼 느끼게 하실 때도 있습니다.

하지만 결국에는 우리를 사랑하시고, 구원하시는 분이 우리 하나님이십니다.

이처럼 우리의 범죄함 때문에 얼굴을 가리시고, 또 당신의 거룩한 성호를 위하여 다시 얼굴을 나타내시는 하나님이 우리 하나님이십니다. 마치 우리 부모들과 자식의 관계를 보는 것 같습니다. 그래서 우리는 하나님을 아버지라고 부르는 것입니다.

그 귀하신 얼굴을 가리시고, 또한 나타내시는 하나님을 진심으로 사랑합시다.  

Conclusion

God operates with the same Fatherly heart today. When we wander into sin, He disciplines us and teaches us. At times, He may briefly turn His face away so that we feel the grief of His absence and recognize our absolute dependence on Him. Yet in the end, He is the God who loves us, seeks us out, and saves us.

He is our God—One who hides His face due to our sins, yet turns His radiant face back toward us for the glory of His holy name. It mirrors the depth of a parent's love for a child, which is why we privilege Him with the name Father.

Let us love Him with all our heart—the God who hides, yet faithfully reveals His precious face to us.
