107:24 여호와께서 행하신 일들과 그의 기이한 일들을 깊은 바다에서 보나니

107:25 여호와께서 명령하신즉 광풍이 일어나 바다 물결을 일으키는도다

107:26 그들이 하늘로 솟구쳤다가 깊은 곳으로 내려가나니 그 위험 때문에 그들의 영혼이 녹는도다

107:27 그들이 이리저리 구르며 취한 자 같이 비틀거리니 그들의 모든 지각이 혼돈 속에 빠지는도다

23 Some went out on the sea in ships;

    they were merchants on the mighty waters.

24 They saw the works of the Lord,

    his wonderful deeds in the deep.

25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest

    that lifted high the waves.

26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;

    in their peril their courage melted away.

27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards;

    they were at their wits’ end.

28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,

    and he brought them out of their distress.

29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;

    the waves of the sea were hushed.

30 They were glad when it grew calm,

    and he guided them to their desired haven.

31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love

    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people

    and praise him in the council of the elders.

107:33 여호와께서는 강이 변하여 광야가 되게 하시며 샘이 변하여 마른 땅이 되게 하시며

33 He turned rivers into a desert,

    flowing springs into thirsty ground,

34 and fruitful land into a salt waste,

    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.

35 He turned the desert into pools of water

    and the parched ground into flowing springs;

36 there he brought the hungry to live,

    and they founded a city where they could settle.

37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards

    that yielded a fruitful harvest;

38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased,

    and he did not let their herds diminish.

107:39 다시 압박과 재난과 우환을 통하여 그들의 수를 줄이시며 낮추시는도다

107:40 여호와께서 고관들에게는 능욕을 쏟아 부으시고 길 없는 황야에서 유리하게 하시나

107:41 궁핍한 자는 그의 고통으로부터 건져 주시고 그의 가족을 양 떼 같이 지켜 주시나니

107:42 정직한 자는 보고 기뻐하며 모든 사악한 자는 자기 입을 봉하리로다

39 Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled

    by oppression, calamity and sorrow;

40 he who pours contempt on nobles

    made them wander in a trackless waste.

41 But he lifted the needy out of their affliction

    and increased their families like flocks.

42 The upright see and rejoice,

    but all the wicked shut their mouths.

107:43 지혜 있는 자들은 이러한 일들을 지켜 보고 여호와의 인자하심을 깨달으리로다

43 Let the one who is wise heed these things

    and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.

종교의 자유를 찾아 아메리카 신대륙으로 떠났던 청교들이 좋아하는 시편이 무엇인줄 아십니까? 그렇습 니다. 시편 107편입니다. 그래서 본 시편은 순례자들의 시편 이라고 알려졌습니다. 필그림 파더스, 즉 청교도 개척자들의 지도자였던 윌리엄 브래드포드는 청교들의 눈물겨운 정착기를 글로 남겼습니다. 그의 일기이자 미국 초기 역사서인 플리머스 플랜테이션에 관하여Of Plymouth Plantation는 미국 초기 역사의 너무도 소중한 자료입니다. 윌리엄 브래드포드는 플리머스 플랜테이션에 관하여 에서 바로 시편 107편을 언급합니다. 하나님의 백성들에 대한 하나님의 선하심을 연대기적으로 기록한 본 시편은 분명히 그들에게 등대였습니다.

Do you know which Psalm was most beloved by the Puritans who left for the New World in search of religious freedom? That’s right—it is Psalm 107. Because of this, it has become known as the "Pilgrim's Psalm." William Bradford, the leader of the Pilgrim Fathers, left behind a poignant written account of the Puritans' tearful struggle to settle. His journal, Of Plymouth Plantation, serves as an early history of America and remains an incredibly precious historical document. In it, William Bradford directly references Psalm 107. Chronologically recording God’s goodness toward His people, this Psalm was undeniably a lighthouse for them.

바다의 광풍에서 구원하시는 하나님 (23~32절)

청교들이 본 시편을 자신들의 주제가로 삼은 이유가 오늘 본문 때문일 확률이 높다고 생각합니다. 본문을 보면 요나의 이야기가 오버랩 됩니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 유목민으로 사실 바다와는 연관이 없습니다. 그렇다고 바다에서 어떤 일이 벌어지는지 모르지는 않았습니다.

뱃사람들의 모습을 통해서 시편기자는 하나님의 위대하심과 바다까지도 다스리시는 주인임을 노래합니다.

바다에서는 예측할 수 없는 일들이 벌어집니다. 특히 항해술이 미미했던 고대에는 더욱 그렇습니다. 그래서 깊은 바다에서 기이한 일들을 봅니다(23).

배와 관련된 분들의 이야기를 들어보면 큰파도가 일때는 마치 놀이기구 바이킹을 타는 것과 같다고 합니다. 하늘로 솟구쳤다가 깊은 곳으로 떨어지는 느낌! 이것은 큰 파도가 배를 높이 들어올렸다가 다시 떨어뜨리는 모습을 묘사합니다. 큰 배가 가장 무서워하는 것은 배 앞쪽과 뒤쪽을 파도가 들어올리는 것이라고 합니다. 만일 파도가 앞과 뒤 양쪽만 들어올린 경우 배는 배 자체의 무게로 인하여 배 가운데가 갈라져 두 동강이 날수도 있다고 합니다. 그러니 뱃사람들의 영혼이 녹아 내릴수 밖에 없습니다. 술 취한 것처럼 혼미한 패닉 상태가 되는 것입니다(27).

이때 무엇을 해야 합니까? 그렇습니다. 여호와께 부르짖어야 합니다. 고통 가운데 여호와께 부르짖으면, 하나님께서는 우리를 고통에서 인도하여 내시고(28), 광풍을 고요하게 하사 물결을 잔잔하게 하십니다(29).

그리고 하나님은 그 기쁨이 채 가시기도 전에 우리를 목적하는 항구로 인도하시는 분이신줄로 믿습니다!

그러니 청교도들에게 본 시편이 얼마나 큰 위로가 되었겠습니까? 일기예보 시스템도 없는 시대에 언제 사나운 폭풍의 얼굴로 변할 줄 모를 대서양 바다를 건널 때, 그들은 분명히 이 시편을 외웠을 것입니다. 하나님께 구원을 부르짖었을 것입니다. 그리고 기도한대로 하나님은 메이플라워호에 탄 그들을 1620년 매사추세츠 주 플리머스 항구로 인도하신 것입니다.

우리의 인생도 마치 폭풍의 위험이 도사리는 인생의 대서양을 항해하는 메이플라워호와 같습니다. 때로는 하늘 높이 솟구쳤다가, 지옥 깊은 곳까지 떨어지는 느낌이 듭니다. 그때 우리는 무엇해야 합니까? 그렇습니다. 하나님 앞에 나와 부르짖어야 합니다. 그러면 하나님은 그 풍랑으로 인하여 더 빨리 우리를 목적하는 소원의 항구로 인도하여 주실 것입니다. 그때 우리는 백성의 모임에서 하나님을 높이고, 장로들의 자리에서 하나님을 찬송해야 합니다. 모든 공동체 구성원들의 찬송이 되시는 하나님입니다.

1. The God Who Saves from the Storm at Sea (v. 23–32)

I believe there is a high probability that the Puritans chose this Psalm as their theme song precisely because of today’s passage. When you read this text, the story of Jonah naturally overlaps. As nomads, the people of Israel actually had very little to do with the sea. However, that does not mean they were ignorant of what happened upon the waters. Through the vivid imagery of sailors, the Psalmist sings of God’s greatness and His sovereignty over the oceans.

Unpredictable things happen at sea. This was especially true in ancient times when navigation technology was primitive. Thus, "they saw the wonders in the deep" (v. 23).

Those who work on ships often describe facing massive waves as being like riding a pirate ship amusement park ride—feeling your body skyrocket to the heavens and then suddenly plunge into the depths! This perfectly describes how massive waves lift a ship high and then drop it back down.

Experts say that the most terrifying thing for a large vessel is when waves lift both the bow (front) and the stern (back) at the same time. If that happens, the sheer weight of the ship can cause the middle to crack, snapping it clean in two. Naturally, the souls of the sailors melt away in terror. They enter a state of dizzy panic, "reeling and staggering like drunken men" (v. 27).

What must we do in times like these? That is right. We must cry out to the Lord. When we cry out to Him in our distress, He brings us out of our troubles (v. 28). He stills the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea are hushed (v. 29). And I believe that before our joy even fades, He guides us safely to our desired haven!

Imagine how much comfort this Psalm must have brought to the Puritans. In an era with no weather forecasting systems, as they crossed the vast Atlantic Ocean—never knowing when it might turn into a raging, ferocious tempest—they must have memorized this Psalm. They must have cried out to God for deliverance. And just as they prayed, God safely guided those aboard the Mayflower to the harbor of Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620.

Our lives are very much like the Mayflower, navigating a personal Atlantic Ocean fraught with the dangers of hidden storms. Sometimes we feel tossed high into the sky; other times, we feel dropped into the depths of hell. What should we do then? Yes, we must come before God and cry out. Then, God will use those very waves to bring us even faster to our desired haven. When that happens, we must exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the seat of the elders. He is the God who deserves the praise of the entire community.

강이 광야로 광야가 다시 샘물로 (33~43절)

캘리포니아주 중부 산 조아킨 밸리에 위치한 툴레어 호수Tulare Lake는 19세기까지만해도 서부에서 가장 큰담수호였습니다. 하지만 1800년대 후반부터 사람들이 농사를 짓기 위해 호수로 흘러드는 강줄기를 돌려 인공 수로와 댐을 만들고, 호수 바닥의 물을 빼내면서 호수가 완전히 말라붙었습니다. 그 이후 이곳은 아몬드, 피스타치오, 면화 등을 대량으로 재배하는 비옥한 농지로 변했습니다.

그런데 얼마전 130년만에 다시 축구장 수만개 크기의 12만에이커나 되는 호수가 나타난 것입니다. 주변 시에라 산맥에서 녹아내린 눈과 기후 변화로 인한 현상이었습니다. 호수가 사막으로 사막이 다시 호수로 변한 것입니다.

본 시편 기자가 발견한 하나님은 바로 그런 분입니다. 강이 변하여 광야가 되게 하고, 다시 광야가 변하여 샘물이 되게 하시는 분입니다. 모든 작물들의 소출을 주관하시는 분이며, 다시 압박과 재난과 우환을 통해서 작물이나 가축들의 숫자를 조절하시는 분입니다. 신기하지 않습니까? 전세계 인구의 남여 비율이 맞는 것이… 이 역시 하나님의 작품입니다. 그러므로 우리는 전능자이신 하나님을 믿고 인정해야 합니다. 여호와는 우리 인생의 모든 것을 주관하시는 하나님이십니다. 

2. Rivers to Wilderness, Wilderness to Water Springs (v. 33–43)

Located in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California, Tulare Lake was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi up until the 19th century. However, starting in the late 1800s, people diverted the rivers feeding the lake to build artificial canals and dams for farming. They drained the lake bed, causing it to dry up completely. Since then, it transformed into fertile agricultural land, producing massive quantities of almonds, pistachios, and cotton.

Yet, not long ago, for the first time in 130 years, a massive lake spanning 120,000 acres—the size of tens of thousands of football fields—reappeared. This phenomenon was caused by heavy snowmelt from the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains and climate change. A lake turned into a desert, and a desert turned back into a lake.

The God whom the Psalmist discovered is precisely this kind of God. He is the One who turns rivers into a desert, and then turns the desert back into springs of water. He controls the harvest of all crops, and He regulates the number of crops and livestock through seasons of oppression, disaster, and sorrow.

Isn't it fascinating? Think about how the male-to-female ratio of the global human population remains balanced. This, too, is God's handiwork. Therefore, we must trust and acknowledge the Almighty God. Jehovah is the Lord who governs every single aspect of our lives.

시편 기자는 결론적으로 다시 한번 정리합니다.

하나님은 고관들에게 능욕을 쏟아부으시고 길없는 황야에서 유리하게 하시는 분입니다(40).

진짜 왕, 주권자는 어떤 제국이나 어떤 왕이 아니라, 하나님이시라는 것입니다. 주님은 만왕의 왕이십니다.

하나님은 궁핍한 자를 고통에서 건지시고, 그의 가족을 양 떼같이 지켜주시는 목자이십니다(41).

얼마나 위로가 되는 말씀입니까! 다윗이 노래한 시편23편이 바로 이와 같은 신앙고백의 노래입니다.

공의의 하나님을 보면 정직한 자는 기뻐할 것이고, 사악한 자는 자기 입을 가릴 것입니다(42).

갚으시는 하나님으로 말미암아 선한 자는 기뻐할 것이고, 악한 자는 할 말이 없는 것입니다.

마지막 결론은 지혜 있는 자들은 이러한 일들을 지켜보고 여호와의 인자하심을 깨달을 것입니다(43).

인생의 한조각만 보면 때로는 하나님을 이해할 수 없습니다. 욥의 인생 한부분을 본다면 우리가 어떻게 하나님을 선하다고 말할 수 있겠습니까? 하지만 욥의 모든 인생을 보면 결국 우리는 하나님은 선하시고, 인생은 악하다고 고백할 수밖에 없습니다. 그 인자하신 하나님을 깨닫는 자가 지혜로운 자입니다. 그리고 그 지혜는 여호와를 경외하는 자, 곧 예수를 믿는 자에게 주어지는 축복입니다. 이 축복을 놓치지 맙시다.

Conclusion

In closing, the Psalmist summarizes everything once more:

• God pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless waste (v. 40). This means the true King and Sovereign is not any earthly empire or human ruler, but God alone. The Lord is the King of kings.

• He lifts the needy out of their affliction and increases their families like flocks (v. 41). What incredibly comforting words these are! Psalm 23, sung by David, is precisely this kind of confession of faith.

• Seeing the God of justice, the upright will rejoice, but all the wicked will shut their mouths (v. 42). Because of the God who repays, the righteous will find joy, and the wicked will be left speechless.

The ultimate conclusion is this: "Let the wise hear these things and ponder the loving-kindness of the Lord" (v. 43).

If you only look at one isolated piece of a life, it is sometimes impossible to understand God. If we only looked at a single, painful chapter of Job's life, how could we ever confess that God is good? But when we look at the entirety of Job’s life, we are ultimately forced to confess that God is good, and humanity is broken. The one who recognizes this loving-kindness of God is truly wise. And that wisdom is a blessing given to those who fear the Lord—namely, those who believe in Jesus Christ. Let us never miss out on this beautiful blessing.
