32:1 열두째 해 열두째 달 초하루에 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

2 인자야 너는 애굽의 바로 왕에 대하여 슬픈 노래를 불러 그에게 이르라 너를 여러 나라에서 사자로 생각하였더니 실상은 바다 가운데의 큰 악어라 강에서 튀어 일어나 발로 물을 휘저어 그 강을 더럽혔도다

3 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 많은 백성의 무리를 거느리고 내 그물을 네 위에 치고 그 그물로 너를 끌어오리로다

4 내가 너를 뭍에 버리며 들에 던져 공중의 새들이 네 위에 앉게 할 것임이여 온 땅의 짐승이 너를 먹어 배부르게 하리로다

5 내가 네 살점을 여러 산에 두며 네 시체를 여러 골짜기에 채울 것임이여

6 네 피로 네 헤엄치는 땅에 물 대듯 하여 산에 미치게 하며 그 모든 개천을 채우리로다

7 내가 너를 불 끄듯 할 때에 하늘을 가리어 별을 어둡게 하며 해를 구름으로 가리며 달이 빛을 내지 못하게 할 것임이여

8 하늘의 모든 밝은 빛을 내가 네 위에서 어둡게 하여 어둠을 네 땅에 베풀리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

9 내가 네 패망의 소문이 여러 나라 곧 네가 알지 못하는 나라들에 이르게 할 때에 많은 백성의 마음을 번뇌하게 할 것임이여

10 내가 그 많은 백성을 너로 말미암아 놀라게 할 것이며 내가 내 칼이 그들의 왕 앞에서 춤추게 할 때에 그 왕이 너로 말미암아 심히 두려워할 것이며 네가 엎드러지는 날에 그들이 각각 자기 생명을 위하여 무시로 떨리로다

11 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 바벨론 왕의 칼이 네게 오리로다

12 나는 네 무리가 용사 곧 모든 나라의 무서운 자들의 칼에 엎드러지게 할 것임이여 그들이 애굽의 교만을 폐하며 그 모든 무리를 멸하리로다

13 내가 또 그 모든 짐승을 큰 물 가에서 멸하리니 사람의 발이나 짐승의 굽이 다시는 그 물을 흐리지 못할 것임이여

14 그 때에 내가 그 물을 맑게 하여 그 강이 기름 같이 흐르게 하리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

15 내가 애굽 땅이 황폐하여 사막이 되게 하여 거기에 풍성한 것이 없게 할 것임이여 그 가운데의 모든 주민을 치리니 내가 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라

16 이는 슬피 부를 노래이니 여러 나라 여자들이 이것을 슬피 부름이여 애굽과 그 모든 무리를 위하여 이것을 슬피 부르리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

32:1 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, raise a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“You consider yourself a lion of the nations,

but you are like a dragon in the seas;

you burst forth in your rivers,

trouble the waters with your feet,

and foul their rivers.

3  Thus says the Lord GOD:

I will throw my net over you

with a host of many peoples,

and they will haul you up in my dragnet.

4  And I will cast you on the ground;

on the open field I will fling you,

and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you,

and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.

5  I will strew your flesh upon the mountains

and fill the valleys with your carcass.

6  I will drench the land even to the mountains

with your flowing blood,

and the ravines will be full of you.

7  When I blot you out, I will cover the heavens

and make their stars dark;

I will cover the sun with a cloud,

and the moon shall not give its light.

8  All the bright lights of heaven

will I make dark over you,

and put darkness on your land,

declares the Lord GOD.

9 “I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known. 10 I will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when I brandish my sword before them. They shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.

11 “For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. 12 I will cause your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them most ruthless of nations.

“They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt,

and all its multitude shall perish.

13  I will destroy all its beasts

from beside many waters;

and no foot of man shall trouble them anymore,

nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.

14  Then I will make their waters clear,

and cause their rivers to run like oil,

declares the Lord GOD.

15  When I make the land of Egypt desolate,

and when the land is desolate of all that fills it,

when I strike down all who dwell in it,

then they will know that I am the LORD.

16 This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord GOD.”

‘시범 케이스’라는 말이 있습니다. 원래라면 모범을 보인다는 ‘시범’이라는 말과 사례를 뜻하는 ‘Case’라는 영단어가 합쳐져서 뜻을 풀어놓으면 모범 사례 같은 좋은 말이 되어야 하는데 실제로는 그렇지 못하지요. 보통 우리가 시범 케이스라고 하는 말을 쓸때면 ‘기강을 잡거나 경고하기 위해 여럿 중 하나를 콕 집어서 크게 혼내는 일’을 가르킬때 사용합니다. 제가 이 단어를 처음 접했던 것은 중학교때 였던 거 같은데요. 수업시간에 만화책을 보다가 걸린 친구를 놓고 당시 선생님께서 시범케이스라고 복도 한쪽 끝에서부터 반대편 끝까지 이른바 요즘 유행하는 ‘참교육’을 시행하셨던 것이 기억이 납니다. 그 후로 그 선생님 시간에는 아무도 만화책을 볼 생각도 못했었지요. 오늘의 말씀도 비슷한 상황이 아닌가 싶습니다. 하나님께서 애굽에게 또 심판의 말씀을 하십니다. 그런데 그 맥락이 지난번과는 다릅니다. 이번에는 그들을 심판하심으로 여러 나라의 많은 백성들이 놀라게 될 것입니다. 하나님의 칼이 춤을 출때 그들은 매 순간 두려움으로 떨게 될 것입니다. 오늘은 “하나님의 시범케이스”라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

There is a phrase we often use in Korean: "making a test case out of someone" (sibom-case). Etymologically, it combines the Korean word sibom, meaning a demonstration or exemplary display, with the English word case. Strictly by its definition, it ought to mean a positive "role model" or "benchmark example," but in reality, it carries a very different nuance. Whenever we say someone was made into a "test case," we mean that one person was singled out and severely punished to set an example, enforce discipline, or send a stark warning to everyone else. I think the first time I encountered this concept was back in middle school. A classmate of mine got caught reading a comic book during class, and the teacher decided to make a "test case" out of him—administering what people nowadays call "a harsh reality check" by punishing him all the way from one end of the hallway to the other. After that day, no one ever dared to even think about pulling out a comic book during that teacher's class. Today’s passage presents a remarkably similar dynamic. God speaks a message of judgment against Egypt once again. However, the context is different from previous passages. This time, by executing judgment upon Egypt, many peoples and nations will be shaken with awe and horror. As the sword of God flashes and dances, they will tremble in fear at every moment. Today, I want to share a message titled: "God's Test Case."

그렇다면 바로 왕이 왜 시범 케이스인가? 함께 보시겠습니다. 1절, 하나님의 말씀이 에스겔에게 임하여, 2절, 애굽의 바로 왕에 대하여 슬픈 노래를 불러 그에게 말하라고 말씀하십니다. 그때에 뭐라고 말씀하십니까? “너를 여러 나라에서 사자로 생각하였더니” 자, 이 말씀이 무슨 뜻일까요? 주변 여러 민족들과 나라들이 애굽을 ‘젊은 사자’와 같이 위력적인 존재로 인식했다는 뜻입니다. 당시의 애굽은 육지에서 강력한 영향력을 행사하는 제국이었기 때문에 주변 나라들이 애굽의 군사력과 위용을 사자의 힘에 비유하며 우러러 보았다는 것입니다. 자, 그런데 그 다음 나오는 말씀이 걸작입니다. “실상은 바다 가운데의 큰 악어라 강에서 튀어 일어나 발로 물을 휘저어 그 강을 더럽혔도다” 그런데 실제로는 무엇이라고요? ‘큰 악어’라고 하십니다. 이 비유는 지난 목요일에도 설명한 적이 있었지요. 신화적인 배경 아래에서 창조주 하나님을 대적하다가 패배한 혼돈의 괴물, 바다 괴물을 암시합니다. 무슨 말입니까? 이들이 우러러마지 않는 애굽이 실제로는 강에서 튀고 발로 물을 휘저어서 그들의 삶의 터전인 그 강을 더럽히는 악한 괴물에 지나지 않는다는 것입니다. 이것이 하나님이 보시는 애굽의 실체인 것이지요. 그래서 3절부터 10절까지 우리는 하나님께서 애굽을 심판하시는 장면을 보게 됩니다. 3절, “내가 많은 백성의 무리를 거느리고 내 그물… 그 그물로 너를 끌어오리로다.” 4절, “내가 너를 … 들에 던져 온 땅의 짐승이 너를 먹어 배부르게 하리로다.” 5절, “내가 네 살점을… 네 시체를 여러 골짜기에 채울 것임이여” 6절, “(내가) 네 피로 … 물 대듯 하여… 그 모든 개천을 채우리로다.” 여러분 이 말씀들이 무섭지 않으십니까? 저는 좀 두렵더라구요. 자타공인 그 지역의 맹주였던 존재가 하나님 앞에서는 아무것도 아니어서 자신의 영역이었던 강에서 무력하게 끌려나와 내가 힘도 못쓰는 육지와 들판에 던져져서 온 육지 짐승과 새들의 고깃덩어리가 되는데 그 살점들이 온 산에 튀기고 골짜기를 다 채우며 그 흐르는 피가 땅에 물대듯 해서 모든 개천을 채우다 못해 산등성이까지 그 피가 닿는다니 이 얼마나 잔혹한 그림입니까? 너무나 두려운 장면이지요.

이뿐만이 아닙니다. 7-8절은 애굽의 왕 파라오를 철저히 심판하심을 보여줍니다. 7절입니다. 하나님께서 내가 네 빛을 끄겠다, “너를 불 끄듯 하겠다” 라고 말씀하십니다. 이거 굉장한 말씀입니다. 여러분 이집트에서 가장 높은 신이 무슨 신입니까? 태양신이지요. 태양신 ‘라,’ 그치요? 파라오는 그 태양신 ‘라’의 아들이자 살아있는 신입니다. 그런데 하나님께서 그 빛을 꺼버리시겠다고 말씀하시는 것입니다. 그것 뿐입니까? 하늘의 모든 빛을 없애버리십니다. 별도 어둡게 하고 해도 가리시고 달도 빛을 내지 못하게 하셔서 8절을 보니 “내가 네 위에서 어둡게 하여 어둠을 네 땅에 베풀리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라” 선포하시지요. 선전포고입니다. 내가 스스로 신이라 일컫는 너에게 삼라만상의 진짜 주인이 누구인지 알게 해주겠다는 말씀이에요. 그들의 육체와 정신과 영혼까지 모두 하나님께서 심판하신다는 것입니다. 그렇다면 하나님의 심판의 이유가 무엇일까요? 9절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “내가 네 패망의 소문이 여러 나라 곧 네가 알지 못하는 나라들에 이르게 할 때에 많은 백성의 마음을 번뇌하게 할 것임이여” 아, 이들을 통해 이들이 알지도 못하는 여러 나라 많은 백성들의 마음이 불안하게 될 것이랍니다. 10절, “내가 그 많은 백성을 너로 말미암아 놀라게 할 것이며 … 네가 엎드러지는 날에 그들이 각각 자기 생명을 위하여 무시로 떨리로다” 자 한놈을 완전히 조져서 나머지 인원들이 덜덜 떨게 만드는 것, 이것이 무엇입니까? 시범 케이스지요. 제가 이 조진다는 말이 표현이 너무 거칠어서 표준어가 뭔가 찾아봤더니 ‘조지다’가 표준말이더라구요. 아무튼, 11-12절은 그 예언이 구체적으로 어떻게 실현되는지 말씀하십니다. 11절, 바벨론 왕의 칼이 마치 하나님이 쓰시는 식칼처럼 도구로 이들에게 사용되어 12절, 애굽의 교만을 폐하고 그 모든 무리를 멸할것이라고 말씀하십니다. 13-15절도 실로 두려운 말씀입니다. 13절 다시는 그 물을 흐리지 못할 것임이라, 14절 내가 그 물을 맑게 하여. 왜 이 물이 맑아졌습니까? 아까 2절 말씀 기억하십니까? 이 악어가 그 때 어떻게 하였다구요? “강에서 튀어 일어나 발로 물을 휘저어 그 강을 더럽혔도다” 그런데 14절, “내가 그 물을 맑게 하여 그 강이 기름같이 흐르게 하리로다” 있었는데요, 없어졌습니다. 그래서 물이 맑아진거에요. 정말 소름끼치게 두려운 말씀입니다. 그래서 16절을 보니 여러 나라 여자들이 슬피 부를 것이라 말씀하시는 거에요.

Why, then, is Pharaoh king of Egypt being made into a "test case"? Let us look at the text together. In verse 1, the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel. In verse 2, God commands him to raise a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: "You consider yourself a lion among the nations." What does this mean? It means that the surrounding peoples and nations viewed Egypt as a dominant, fearsome power—like a young lion. Since Egypt was a mighty empire exercising powerful influence over the region, neighboring nations looked up to Egypt’s military prowess, comparing its might to the strength of a lion. But notice the masterstroke of contrast in the very next phrase: "yet you are like a monster in the seas thrashing about in your streams, churning the water with your feet and muddying the streams." What does God say Egypt actually is? A "monster" in the waters! As I mentioned on Thursday, within the mythological framework of that culture, this imagery evokes a sea monster—a chaotic creature that challenged the Creator God only to be utterly defeated. What is God saying? That Egypt, whom the nations revere, is in reality nothing more than a foul beast that thrushes around in the rivers, muddying the very waters that sustain their life. That is Egypt's true reality in the eyes of God. Therefore, in verses 3 through 10, we witness God executing His judgment upon Egypt. Verse 3: "With a great throng of people I will cast my net over you, and they will haul you up in my net." Verse 4: "I will throw you on the land and toss you on the open field. I will let all the birds of the sky settle on you and all the animals of the wild gorge themselves on you." Verse 5: "I will spread your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains." Verse 6: "I will drench the land with your flowing blood all the way to the mountains, and the ravines will be filled with your flesh." Do these words not strike terror in your heart? Frankly, I felt a deep sense of dread reading them. The undisputed regional ruler is reduced to absolute nothingness before God! Dragged helplessly out of the river—his own domain—and thrown onto the dry land where he has no power, he becomes raw meat for the wild beasts and birds. His flesh is scattered across the mountains and valleys, and his blood drenches the earth like water, filling the ravines and reaching all the way to the mountain peaks. What a gruesome and terrifying picture! And it does not end there. Verses 7 and 8 show the complete judgment upon Pharaoh himself. In verse 7, God says, "When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens." This is an extraordinary statement. Who was the supreme deity in Egyptian worship? The sun god, Ra, right? Pharaoh was considered the son of Ra and a living god on earth. Yet God declares that He will snuff out his light! Not only Pharaoh’s light, but God will extinguish all the lights of heaven—darkening the stars, veiling the sun, and withholding the light of the moon. In verse 8, He declares: "All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you; I will bring darkness over your land, declares the Sovereign Lord." This is an absolute declaration of war. God is telling this self-proclaimed deity that He will show him who the true Master of all creation really is. God is judging them in body, mind, and spirit. What, then, is the reason for God’s judgment? Verse 9 says: "I will trouble the hearts of many peoples when I bring about your destruction among the nations, among lands you have not known." Through Egypt’s fall, the hearts of many peoples in distant, unfamiliar lands will be filled with anxiety. Verse 10 adds: "I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you... and on the day of your downfall they will tremble every moment, each for his own life." To thoroughly crush one major power so that everyone else shakes in terror—what is that? That is making a "test case" out of someone! Verses 11 and 12 explain how this prophecy will be executed in detail. In verse 11, the sword of the king of Babylon is wielded like a carving knife in the hand of God, and verse 12 tells us it will shatter Egypt's pride and destroy all her hordes. Verses 13 through 15 are equally terrifying. Verse 13 promises that no foot will muddy the waters anymore, and verse 14 says, "I will cause their waters to settle and make their rivers flow like oil." Why have the waters suddenly become clear and smooth? Remember verse 2? What did the monster do earlier? "Thrashing about in your streams, churning the water with your feet and muddying the streams." But in verse 14, God says, "I will cause their waters to settle." The monster was there, but now it is gone! That is why the waters become clear. It is a chillingly ominous word. That is why verse 16 concludes by saying that the daughters of the nations will chant this lamentation for Egypt.

말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 애굽의 바로 왕은 말 그대로 하나님의 시범 케이스로 여러 나라, 많은 백성들에게 두려움을 안겨주는 본보기가 되었습니다. 그는 여러 나라에서 ‘젊은 사자’로 생각할 만큼 그의 군사력과 위용이 대단하였습니다. 스스로를 태양의 아들, 또 신이라 일컫을 만큼 교만하였습니다. 그러나 진짜 사자와 신은 오직 여호와 하나님 한 분 뿐이었습니다. 오늘 말씀에서 ‘내가’ 라는 단어가 얼마나 많이 나오는지 보십시오. 모든 것은 하나님의 주권 아래에 있습니다. 그 어느 누구도 하나님을 대적할 수 없습니다. 오늘의 이 처절한 시범케이스를 통해 하나님에 대한 두려움을 다시금 회복하기 원합니다. 하나님이 절대자이심을, 전능자이심을 기억하며 살아가시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Let us conclude. Today, Pharaoh king of Egypt literally became God’s "test case"—an object lesson striking fear into the hearts of many nations and peoples. His military strength and royal majesty were so immense that neighboring lands regarded him as a "young lion." He was so arrogant that he claimed to be the son of the sun god and a deity himself. Yet, the only true Lion and the only true God is Yahweh our Lord. Look at how many times the word "I" (referring to God) appears throughout today's text! Everything stands under God’s absolute sovereignty. No one can ever stand against Him. Through this sobering "test case," may we recover a holy, reverent fear of God. May you live each day remembering that God alone is the Absolute One, the Almighty Lord. I bless you in the name of the Lord.
