A Prophecy Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, set your face against Sidon; prophesy against her 22 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Sidon,

    and among you I will display my glory.

You will know that I am the Lord,

    when I inflict punishment on you

    and within you am proved to be holy.

23 I will send a plague upon you

    and make blood flow in your streets.

The slain will fall within you,

    with the sword against you on every side.

Then you will know that I am the Lord.

24 “‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

28:25 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 여러 민족 가운데에 흩어져 있는 이스라엘 족속을 모으고 그들로 말미암아 여러 나라의 눈 앞에서 내 거룩함을 나타낼 때에 그들이 고국 땅 곧 내 종 야곱에게 준 땅에 거주할지라

28:26 그들이 그 가운데에 평안히 살면서 집을 건축하며 포도원을 만들고 그들의 사방에서 멸시하던 모든 자를 내가 심판할 때에 그들이 평안히 살며 내가 그 하나님 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라

25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 They will live there in safety and will build houses and plant vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.’”

                어제까지 우리는 두로에 대한 하나님의 심판의 말씀을 보았습니다. 오늘은 두로와 함께 당시 지중해 연안의 최대 항구 도시이며 상업도시였던 시돈에 대한 심판의 말씀을 볼 차례입니다. 많은 분들에게 시돈은 그다지 익숙하지 않은 도시일 것입니다. 시돈 출신의 가장 유명한 사람이 있다면 이스라엘의 왕, 아합의 아내였던 악녀 이세벨일 것입니다. 그녀는 열왕기상을 보니 “시돈 사람의 왕 엣바알의 딸” 이였다고 합니다. 자 그러면, 이세벨하면 무엇이 떠오르십니까? 네, 바로 우상숭배, 그 중에서도 바알 숭배. 그렇습니다. 시돈은 바알과 아세라와 같은 가나안 우상 숭배의 본거지였습니다. 시돈 왕 ‘엣바알의 딸’이라고 할 때 그 ‘엣바알’의 뜻이 ‘바알과 함께하는 자’라는 뜻이라니 시돈 안에 우상숭배가 얼마나 팽배하였는지 알 수 있지요. 자, 그런 시돈을 하나님께서 심판하시겠다고 말씀하십니다. 그들 가운데에서 심판을 행하여 당신의 거룩하심을 나타내시겠다고 합니다. 그런데 당신의 백성에게는 그들을 회복하심으로 당신의 거룩하심을 나타내시겠다고 말씀하십니다. 하나님의 거룩하심의 양면성, 오늘은 “하나님의 거룩하신 심판과 회복”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction: The Two Sides of God's Holiness

Up until yesterday, we looked at God's message of judgment against Tyre. Today, we turn our attention to Sidon, which, alongside Tyre, was one of the largest Mediterranean port and commercial cities of that era.

For many of you, Sidon might not sound very familiar. If there is one famous person from Sidon that almost everyone recognizes, it is Queen Jezebel—the wicked wife of King Ahab of Israel. 1 Kings tells us that she was the "daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians." When you think of Jezebel, what immediately comes to mind? That’s right—idolatry, specifically the worship of Baal. Sidon was the epicenter of Canaanite idol worship, including Baal and Asherah. In fact, the name "Ethbaal" literally means "with Baal," which shows us just how deeply saturated Sidon was in idolatry.

Now, God declares that He will judge Sidon. He states that He will execute judgments among them to manifest His holiness. Yet, when it comes to His own people, God declares that He will manifest His holiness by restoring them. Today, as we explore these two sides of God's holiness, I want to share a message titled: "God's Holy Judgment and Restoration."

                먼저 시돈에 대한 하나님의 거룩하신 심판의 메시지를 함께 보기 원합니다. 20절에 에스겔에게 하나님의 신탁의 말씀이 임하였습니다. 열방을 향한 하나님의 심판의 말씀이 임할 때마다 해당 나라를 바라보고 예언하라고 말씀하셨듯이 21절에 이번에도 에스겔에게 그 얼굴을 시돈으로 향하고 예언하라고 말씀하십니다. 그 내용이 무엇입니까? 22절의 말씀을 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “너는 이르기를 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 시돈아 내가 너를 대적하나니 네 가운데에서 내 영광이 나타나리라 하셨다 하라 내가 그 가운데에서 심판을 행하여 내 거룩함을 나타낼 때에 무리가 나를 여호와인 줄을 알지라” 이 한 절의 말씀에 너무 많은 내용들이 함축되어 있어 몇가지만 살펴보겠습니다. 첫번째는 하나님께서 시돈을 심판하시는 목적입니다. 하나님의 목적은 그들을 파괴하시는 것이 아니었습니다. 그 과정을 통해 하나님이 주권자이심을 열방에 드러내시는 것이 목적이었습니다. “내가 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라.” 그래서 이 말씀이 22, 23, 24, 26절에 계속해서 반복되고 있는 것입니다. 두번째, 이들을 대적하신다고 선전포고를 하신 하나님이 그들 가운데에 내 영광을 나타내시겠다고 말씀하십니다. 그것이 그들에게는 심판이며 그 심판을 통해 하나님의 거룩하심을 나타내시겠다고 합니다. 이는 실로 두려운 말씀입니다. 우리가 생각하는 하나님의 영광, 무언가 밝은 빛 같은 그런 이미지로서가 아니라 진정한 하나님의 영광은 당신의 거룩하심이 나타내는 것입니다. 그런데 그 거룩하심은 죄와 우상으로 더렵혀진 땅을 용납하실 수 없습니다. 그래서 하나님의 통치와 거룩하심이 회복되는 그 영광의 과정은 그들에게는 두렵고 처절한 심판이 되는 것입니다. 23절이 그것을 말하고 있습니다. 전염병과 같은 통제 불가능한 자연적 재앙과, 거리에 흐르는 피와 같이 도시 전체가 폭력과 죽음으로 뒤덮일 것입니다. 또 사방에서 오는 칼, 무엇입니까? 외세의 침략으로 그들은 엎드러질 것입니다. 그런데 그런 와중에 24절을 보니 이스라엘 족속에게는 더이상 그들을 찌르고 아프게 하던 사방의 가시들이 없어질 것입니다.

1. God's Holy Judgment Upon Sidon

First, let us look at God’s message of holy judgment upon Sidon. In verse 20, the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel. Just as God commanded him to face whichever nation was receiving an oracle, verse 21 tells Ezekiel to set his face toward Sidon and prophesy against it.

What is the content of this prophecy? Let us read verse 22 together:

“Say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Sidon, and I will among you be glorified. They will know that I am the Lord, when I inflict punishment in her and within her show myself holy.’”

This single verse is packed with profound truth. Let us unpack a few key points:

• The Purpose of Judgment: God’s ultimate goal was not mere destruction. His purpose was to reveal His supreme sovereignty to the nations—"They will know that I am the Lord." That is why this phrase is repeatedly echoed throughout verses 22, 23, 24, and 26.

• Glory and Holiness Through Judgment: God declares war on them, saying He is against them, yet He adds that He will manifest His glory among them. For Sidon, this manifestation of glory takes the form of judgment, through which God shows Himself holy. This is a terrifying truth. The glory of God is not just a pleasant, warm light as we often imagine; God’s true glory is the revelation of His absolute holiness. And His holiness cannot tolerate a land defiled by sin and idols. Therefore, the process of restoring God's reign and holiness—the revealing of His glory—becomes a terrifying and severe judgment for the wicked.

Verse 23 details this reality: uncontrollable disasters like plagues, blood flowing through the streets, and violence and death overtaking the city. Furthermore, swords will attack from every side—meaning foreign invasions will strike them down.

Yet, right in the midst of this, verse 24 makes a remarkable shift: for the house of Israel, there will no longer be painful briers or sharp thorns pricking and hurting them from all surrounding neighbors.

                여기에 하나님의 거룩하심의 놀라운 양면성이 있습니다. 25절의 말씀을 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 여러 민족 가운데에 흩어져 있는 이스라엘 족속을 모으고 그들로 말미암아 여러 나라의 눈앞에서 내 거룩함을 나타낼 때에 그들이 고국 땅 곧 내 종 야곱에게 준 땅에 거주할지라” 앞에서 하나님의 거룩함이 나타날 때에 시돈은 완전한 수, 세가지의 방법으로 멸망하게 되는 것을 보았습니다. 그런데 25절의 말씀에서는 이스라엘 족속을 회복시키심으로 여러 나라의 눈 앞에서 당신의 거룩함을 나타내신다는 것입니다. 이스라엘 민족은 여러 민족 가운데에 흩어져 있다고 말씀하셨습니다. 여기서 흩어져 있다는 말은 원래 하나였던 것이 외부의 타격에 의해 형체를 알아볼 수 없도록 산산이 부서져 사방으로 흩어진 것을 말합니다. 하나님과의 언약 공동체였던 이스라엘은 산산이 박살이 나서 스스로의 힘으로는 도저히 원래의 형태로 복구될 수 없는 상태였습니다. 그런데 하나님께서 “내가… 이스라엘 족속을 모으고” 라고 말씀하십니다. 그리고 “그들로 말미암아 … 내 거룩함을 나타”내시겠다고 말씀하십니다. 앞에서 하나님의 영광, 하나님의 거룩하심이 나타날 때에 그것은 철저한 심판의 메시지였습니다. 그러나 당신의 언약 백성들에게 당신의 거룩함을 나타내신다는 말씀은 스스로를 구원할 수 없는 이들을 구원하시고 회복시키시는 놀라운 반전인 것입니다. 그들은 하나님께서 주신 땅으로 돌아가 그곳에 거주할 것입니다. 그 뿐이 아닙니다. 26절을 보니 세가지의 동사가 연달아서 나옵니다. “그들이 그 가운데에 평안히 살면서, 집을 건축하며, 포도원을 만들고” 정착과 안정을 말하고 있습니다. 평안한 일상과 미래가 보장되는 것입니다. 포도원을 만든다는 것은 곧 미래에 대한 희망과 축제를 암시합니다. 이는 23절에서 보았던 전염병과 거리의 흐르는 피와 사방에서 오는 칼과는 정 반대의 이미지이지요. 하나님의 거룩하심이 나타나는 것은 죄인에게는 심판이며 당신의 백성에게는 회복과 소망인 것입니다. 

2. God's Holy Restoration for His Covenant People

Here we see the astounding two-sided nature of God’s holiness. Let us read verse 25 together:

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will be shown holy among them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.”

Notice the contrast. Earlier, when God's holiness was manifested upon Sidon, it resulted in total destruction through three plagues (disease, blood, and the sword). But in verse 25, God displays His holiness before the eyes of the nations by restoring the house of Israel.

The text notes that Israel was "scattered among the nations." In the original language, "scattered" describes something that was once whole, but smashed so violently by an external force that it shattered into unrecognizable fragments. Israel—once God’s covenant community—had been shattered to pieces. By their own strength, they had zero ability to put themselves back together.

Yet God declares: "I will gather the house of Israel... and show myself holy through them."

For the wicked, the revelation of God’s holiness was a message of utter destruction. But for His covenant people, the revelation of His holiness is a radical, breathtaking reversal—saving and restoring those who could not save themselves. They will return to the land God promised and settle there.

Not only that, verse 26 uses three consecutive actions to paint a picture of total security:

“They will live there in safety and build houses and plant vineyards...”

This points to complete settlement and stability. Their daily life is secure, and their future is guaranteed. Planting vineyards symbolizes hope for the future, joy, and celebration. This is the exact opposite of the plague, blood-filled streets, and surrounding swords seen in verse 23! The revelation of God's holiness brings judgment to sinners, but restoration and hope to His people.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님의 거룩하심은 죄인에게는 심판으로 당신의 백성에게는 회복으로 임하십니다. 죄인된 우리에게 소망이 있음은 하나님께서 심판 뒤에도 우리를 회복시키시기 때문입니다. 하나님께 범죄하여 산산이 흩어지게 되었던 이스라엘 백성들, 자력으로 원래 상태로 돌아갈 수 없던 그들을 하나님께서 당신 손으로 다시 모아 회복시키셨습니다. 그리고 그들에게 안정과 평안을 약속하셨습니다. 그것을 당신의 거룩함이 나타나는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리가 죄인되어 우리 스스로 구원할 수 없을 때에 예수 그리스도께서 우리를 대속하심으로 십자가에서 돌아가시고 하나님의 거룩하심을 나타내셨습니다. 그로 말미암아 우리를 영원한 본향, 천국으로 인도하실 것입니다. 그 하나님의 거룩하심을 감사하며 함께 기도하시겠습니다. 

Conclusion: Restored by His Holiness

Let us conclude. God's holiness comes as judgment to sinners, but as restoration to His people.

Our hope as sinners lies in the truth that even after judgment and discipline, God brings restoration. The people of Israel, who sinned against God and were shattered into dispersion, were entirely helpless to rebuild their lives. Yet God reached out with His own hands, gathered them back, and restored them. He promised them safety, peace, and security, declaring that this was how His holiness would be revealed.

In the same way, when we were trapped in sin and utterly incapable of saving ourselves, Jesus Christ gave Himself up for us on the cross as our substitutionary sacrifice. Through the cross, God demonstrated His ultimate holiness. Through Christ, He promises to lead us into our true, eternal homeland—Heaven.

Let us give thanks for the holy and glorious salvation of our God as we pray together.
