Ezekiel 32:17–32 (NKRV)
Ezekiel 32:17–32 (ESV)
17 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: 18 “Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:
19 ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’
20 They shall fall amid those who are slain by the sword. Egypt is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and all her multitudes. 21 The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’
22 “Assyria is there, and all her company, its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, 23 whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living.
24 “Elam is there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. 25 They have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain.
26 “Meshech-Tubal is there, and all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27 And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. 28 But as for you, you shall be broken and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.
29 “Edom is there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.
30 “The princes of the north are there, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
31 “When Pharaoh sees them, he will be comforted for all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD. 32 For I spread terror in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.”

In the Book of Judges, Samson attempted to marry a Philistine woman. His parents opposed the marriage, saying: "Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?" (Judges 14:3). Furthermore, when Goliath provoked Israel, David heard his defiance and asked: "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" (1 Samuel 17:26). Why were Samson's parents and David so eager to distinguish themselves from those who were uncircumcised? Was circumcision an exclusive physical mark unique only to the Israelites? No. In the Old Testament world and ancient Near Eastern history, circumcision was not practiced solely by Israel. Murals on ancient Egyptian temple walls depict scenes of circumcision, and historical records indicate that Arameans, Edomites, Ammonites, and Moabites also practiced it. Why, then, was the circumcision practiced by Israel so special? It was because their circumcision served as a sign of the covenant established between God and Israel. It was a mark imprinted upon their bodies so they would never forget that they were "God's people." Thus, unlike the Gentile nations—who practiced circumcision primarily among nobility or ruling classes for hygienic or social reasons—every single male among the Israelites underwent circumcision without exception, in obedience to God's command. What, then, becomes of those outside of God's covenant—the so-called "uncircumcised"? Coincidentally, in today's passage, the phrase "uncircumcised" appears no fewer than ten times. Today, as we look at this text concluding the prophecies of judgment upon the nations, I want to share a message titled: "The Fate of the Uncircumcised."

As mentioned, today's text is the seventh and final oracle concerning Egypt, as well as the grand conclusion to all the prophecies of judgment against the nations that we have observed since Ezekiel 25. Therefore, today's passage details the tragic end of the "uncircumcised"—not only Egypt, but also Assyria, Elam, Meshech, Tubal, Edom, and Sidon. First is Egypt. In verse 17, the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel once again. In verse 18, God commands him to wail for the hordes of Egypt and cast them down into the depths of the earth, along with the daughters of mighty nations, with those who go down to the pit. What does He command him to say? Verse 19 reads: "Are you more favored than others?" This sounds a bit odd at first, as it seems out of context with the preceding verses. That is because it is sarcasm. God is mocking Egypt, asking ironically, "Do you really think you are more beautiful or superior than anyone else?" Egypt, which once boasted of its power and splendor, is then met with this decree: "Go down and be laid with the uncircumcised." Egypt, which paraded its military might and wealth in this life, is now cast into the deepest realm of death to lie alongside other "uncircumcised ones." Verse 20 shows that they fall among those slain by the sword; Egypt and all her hordes are dragged away. In verse 21, as they are dragged down into the netherworld, the fallen warriors already residing in Sheol offer a mocking welcome to Egypt's descending armies. That an absolute superpower which once commanded the world becomes an object of mockery even to the inhabitants of the underworld signifies that Egypt's destruction is not merely a defeat or physical death, but a descent into eternal disgrace and shame.

Now, upon descending into Sheol, there are some familiar faces waiting. Who is there? Verse 22 shows Assyria and her whole company—all of them "slain, fallen by the sword." This expression is repeated identically in verse 23. But who were they originally? They were those who "spread terror in the land of the living." The Assyrian Empire was notorious for its cruelty. Is it any wonder Jonah resisted God's call to go to Assyria? Yet, what has become of Assyria and her horde, who once struck terror into the hearts of everyone? They are "all slain, fallen by the sword." Next is Elam. Verse 24 states: "They all went down uncircumcised into the earth below, who spread terror in the land of the living." This echoes the description of Assyria. But what happened to them? "Now they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit." Verse 25 reiterates: "They lie among the slain, bearing their shame." After Elam come Meshech, Tubal, and all their hordes. The same imagery continues, and the latter part of verse 27 notes: "Their punishment for their sins rests on their bones, though the terror of these warriors once infiltrated the land of the living." Even in death, they bear the guilt of their sins—sins stemming from the horrific atrocities they committed while alive. Verses 29 and 30 mention Edom and Sidon. After repeating similar descriptions, verse 30 says: "They used to spread terror because of their power, but now they are put to shame... they lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit." They, too, were objects of terror during their lifetimes, but now they suffer shame alongside the uncircumcised. Then, in verse 31, Pharaoh reappears: "Pharaoh will see them and be consoled over all his hordes." As Pharaoh descends into the underworld, he finds Assyria, Elam, Meshech, Tubal, Edom, and Sidon—nations that once ruled the world—waiting for him, saying, "Welcome, this is your place." God says this will be a "consolation" to Pharaoh. What a miserable consolation! It is hardly comfort at all; rather, it is the exact moment his tragic downfall is confirmed. In verse 32, God utters the same judgment over them, but here we realize that the world feared these nations not merely because of their own military strength, but because God had permitted it: "I placed the terror of him in the land of the living." Yet God, who allowed their temporary terror, now declares: "So he and all his hordes will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword, declares the Sovereign Lord." With the solemn phrase "declares the Sovereign Lord," this sentence is finalized and guaranteed to be executed.

Let us conclude. Those who are not God's people—the "uncircumcised"—may seem in this world to possess ultimate power, wealth, authority, and splendor. They may rule the world and act as if everything belongs to them. Many may fear them or even envy them. Yet the destiny prepared for them was entirely the same. In fact, because of the sins they committed in this world, they are bound to suffer even greater shame and disgrace. We, however, are God's people, a people in covenant with Him. Therefore, we have hope. We are promised the hope of eternal restoration and salvation. Remembering this, I pray and bless you in the name of the Lord that you will not fear worldly power, but hold fast to God alone in every area of your life.
