Therefore Glorify God in your body (고전/1Cor 6:12~20)

[Sexual Immorality]

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

[Introduction: The Trap of Extreme Liberty]

In yesterday’s passage, Paul reminded the Corinthian saints that they were “washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” However, it seems they interpreted this through the lens of their contemporary culture. In the Greco-Roman world of that time, a form of Gnostic dualism was prevalent—the idea that the spirit is inherently good while the body is evil. This often developed into extreme libertinism: "Since the body is evil and destined to perish anyway, indulging in physical pleasure is not a sin." They believed that since they were saved in spirit, what they did with their bodies didn't matter.

We see a similar logic in the church today. Some think, "Now that I have my 'ticket to heaven,' I can sin however I want as long as I repent later." Today, Paul declares that following the desires of the flesh is not true freedom. Rather, he insists that our bodies no longer belong to us; they were bought by God at a price and must be used for His glory. Today’s message is titled: “Glorify God with Your Body.”

[1. Your Body Does Not Belong to You (v. 12-14)]

First, we must realize that our bodies are not our own. There was a popular slogan in the Corinthian church: “I have the right to do anything” (Everything is permissible for me). They used this as a banner to justify any craving or passion of the body.

A prime example is found in verse 13: “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food.” Their logic was simple: "Our bodies were designed this way. Just as it’s natural to eat when we are hungry, it’s natural to satisfy our sexual desires. How can it be a sin to use the body according to its natural design?"

Paul counters this premise. In verse 12, he responds that while "everything may be permissible," not everything is beneficial. True freedom isn't the ability to do whatever we want; it's not being mastered by anything. When we give in to every physical whim, we aren't free—we are enslaved by those desires.

Paul then makes a bold correction: “The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.” He explains that while God will destroy both food and the stomach (as they belong to this passing age), He will raise our bodies by His power, just as He raised the Lord Jesus. This means our bodies have eternal significance and belong to God. We are not to live according to our impulses, but according to His purpose.

[2. Glorify God as His Temple (v. 15-20)]

Second, we must glorify God with our bodies. Paul bases this on the fact that we are members of Christ’s own body. As Romans 6:4 states, “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

Paul asks a piercing question: "Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute?" His answer is an emphatic, "Never!" Why? Because whoever is united with the Lord is one with Him in spirit. If we share one spirit with the Lord, we must act according to that Spirit. As Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

The specific desire Paul addresses today is sexual immorality. This sin is unique because it breaks the blessing of marriage and the "one body" union ordained by God. Paul notes that while other sins are outside the body, sexual immorality is a sin against one’s own body.

Furthermore, our bodies were "bought at a price." They were received from God and are now the Temple of the Holy Spirit. This is why Paul doesn't just say "fight" immorality; he says “Flee from sexual immorality.” Run away! Do not even go near it. When we remember that the Holy Spirit dwells within us, we must walk by the Spirit to honor God rather than fulfilling the lusts of the flesh.

[Conclusion: Living as a Purchased Possession]

We often fall into the illusion that our bodies are our own property. However, today’s text tells us clearly: “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” We must no longer live according to the cravings of the flesh but use our bodies to bring glory to God. Christ, who possessed all freedom and power, humbled Himself and died on the cross for us. By the price of His blood, we were saved, and God was glorified through Him.

How will you live with the body God has given you? I pray that you will follow the example of Christ and live every day for the glory of God.

Amen.
