5:1 너희 중에 심지어 음행이 있다 함을 들으니 그런 음행은 이방인 중에서도 없는 것이라 누가 그 아버지의 아내를 취하였다 하는도다

5:2 그리하고도 너희가 오히려 교만하여져서 어찌하여 통한히 여기지 아니하고 그 일 행한 자를 너희 중에서 쫓아내지 아니하였느냐

5:3 내가 실로 몸으로는 떠나 있으나 영으로는 함께 있어서 거기 있는 것 같이 이런 일 행한 자를 이미 판단하였노라

5:4 주 예수의 이름으로 너희가 내 영과 함께 모여서 우리 주 예수의 능력으로

5:5 이런 자를 사탄에게 내어주었으니 이는 육신은 멸하고 영은 주 예수의 날에 구원을 받게 하려 함이라

[Dealing With a Case of Incest]

1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? 3 For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. 4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

5:6 너희가 자랑하는 것이 옳지 아니하도다 적은 누룩이 온 덩어리에 퍼지는 것을 알지 못하느냐

5:7 너희는 누룩 없는 자인데 새 덩어리가 되기 위하여 묵은 누룩을 내버리라 우리의 유월절 양 곧 그리스도께서 희생되셨느니라

5:8 이러므로 우리가 명절을 지키되 묵은 누룩으로도 말고 악하고 악의에 찬 누룩으로도 말고 누룩이 없이 오직 순전함과 진실함의 떡으로 하자

6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

5:9 내가 너희에게 쓴 편지에 음행하는 자들을 사귀지 말라 하였거니와

5:10 이 말은 이 세상의 음행하는 자들이나 탐하는 자들이나 속여 빼앗는 자들이나 우상 숭배하는 자들을 도무지 사귀지 말라 하는 것이 아니니 만일 그리하려면 너희가 세상 밖으로 나가야 할 것이라

5:11 이제 내가 너희에게 쓴 것은 만일 어떤 형제라 일컫는 자가 음행하거나 탐욕을 부리거나 우상 숭배를 하거나 모욕하거나 술 취하거나 속여 빼앗거든 사귀지도 말고 그런 자와는 함께 먹지도 말라 함이라

9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

5:12 밖에 있는 사람들을 판단하는 것이야 내게 무슨 상관이 있으리요마는 교회 안에 있는  사람들이야 너희가 판단하지 아니하랴

5:13 밖에 있는 사람들은 하나님이 심판하시려니와 이 악한 사람은 너희 중에서 내쫓으라

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

출애굽기 19:5-6을 보면 하나님께서 모세에게 시내산에서 이렇게 말씀하시는 장면이 나옵니다. “너희가 내 말을 잘 듣고 내 언약을 지키면 너희는 열국 중에서 내 소유가 되겠고 너희가 내게 대하여 제사장 나라가 되며 거룩한 백성이 되리라” 하나님께서는 이스라엘을 당신의 제사장 나라, 거룩한 백성으로 부르셨습니다. 그 거룩한 공동체를 통하여 모든 나라에 하나님의 복을 전하기 원하셨지요. 이스라엘은 범죄하여 하나님의 뜻을 이루지 못했지만 하나님께서는 지금도 거룩한 공동체를 찾으십니다. 그것이 바로 그리스도의 몸된 교회이지요. 그런데 그 교회 안에 죄의 문제가 있다면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 오늘은 “거룩한 공동체를 위하여 악을 제거하라” 는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: Called to be a Holy People]

In Exodus 19:5-6, we see God speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai: “If you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession... you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” God called Israel to be a holy community, a vessel through which His blessings would reach all nations. Although Israel failed to fulfill this purpose through their sins, God still seeks a holy community today—and that is the Church, the Body of Christ.

But what should we do when sin enters the church? Today, I want to share a message titled: “Purge the Evil for the Holy Community.”

첫번째, 공동체 안에 죄의 문제가 있을 때, 우리는 함께 슬퍼해야 합니다. 1절을 보니 사도 바울은 고린도교회 안에 음행이 있다 함을 들었다고 말합니다. 그 아버지의 아내를 취한 음행은 심지어 이방인들 조차도 범하지 않는 음행이라고 하지요. 이 표현은 단순히 교회 안에 음행이 있다는 소문이 돌고 있어서 서로 쉬쉬하고 있는데 그 소문이 자기에게까지 들렸다는 표현이 아닙니다. 오히려 ‘어느 누구도 예외없이 모두 다’ 그 일을 알고 있음에도 아무런 조치를 취하지 않고 있다는 강한 책망의 표현이지요. 바울은 말합니다. 너희가 오히려 교만하여졌다. 슬퍼하는 것이 마땅한 반응이 아니겠느냐? 라고 말입니다. 공동체 안에 죄의 문제가 있을 때, 특별히 그 문제가 심각하여 모든 이들이 알고 있을 때 그 죄악을 공동체가 함께 슬퍼하며 애통해야 한다는 것입니다. 그리고 그 애통하는 마음으로 죄악을 우리 가운데서 끊어내야 한다는 것이지요. 그런데 그렇게 하지 않고 우리의 인간적인 마음으로 그저 그 죄악을 쉬쉬하고 덮고만 있다면 그것은 우리의 교만이지 사랑이 아니라는 것입니다. 죄악을 보았을 때에 통한히 여기고 그 죄악을 끊어내는 것이 바로 공동체를 위한 것입니다.

[1. Mourn Together Over Sin (v. 1-2)]

First, when there is a problem of sin within the community, we must mourn together. In verse 1, Paul mentions a report of sexual immorality in the Corinthian church—a man living with his father’s wife. This was a sin so grave that even pagans found it repulsive. Paul’s tone suggests this wasn't just a quiet rumor; it was something everyone knew, yet no one was addressing.

Paul rebukes them: "And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have gone into mourning?" When a serious sin is evident to everyone, the community’s proper response is deep grief and lamentation. We must have the heart to cut off the evil with a mourning spirit. If we simply remain silent and cover it up under the guise of "human kindness," that is not love; it is pride. Mourning over sin and purging it is what truly protects the community.

두번째, 죄악을 제하는 것의 목적은 구원을 얻게 하기 위함임을 기억해야 합니다. 공동체 안에 제거해야 할 악이 있을 때에 우리는 그 대상을 비난하거나 판단하기 쉽습니다. 그러나 궁극적으로 우리가 그 지쳬를 공동체에서 제하는 것은 그 지체를 살리기 위함입니다. 5절에서 바울은 “이런 자를 사탄에게 내주었으니 이는 육신을 멸하고 영은 주 예수의 날에 구원을 받게 하려 함이라” 라는 말을 합니다. 이 표현은 무척 생소한 표현이라 오해의 소지가 있습니다. 같은 표현을 쓴 디모데전서 1:19-20을 제가 읽어보겠습니다. “어떤 이들은 이 양심을 버렸고 그 믿음에 관하여는 파선하였느니라 그 가운데 후메내오와 알렉산더가 있으니 내가 사탄에게 내준 것은 그들로 훈계를 받아 신성을 모독하지 못하게 하려 함이라” 바울이 사탄에게 내주었다고 하는 표현은 파문을 말하는 것입니다. 교회에서 추방하는 것이지요. 그리스도의 몸인 교회 밖으로 나가는 것이기 때문에 사탄의 영역으로 들어간다는 논리에서 나오는 표현입니다. 그런데 이렇게 하는 것이 바로 그들로 훈계를 받게하기 위함이었다는 것입니다. 오늘 말씀도 “이런 자를 사탄에게 내주었으니 … 구원을 받게 하려 함이라” 라는 말씀을 하고 있습니다. 무슨 말입니까? 이들을 교회에서 제하는 것이 이들을 내쫓기 위함이 아니라는 것입니다. 오히려 이들이 교회에서 행할 수 있는 가장 큰 처벌을 받음으로서 자신의 잘못을 깨닫고 훈계를 받아 다시 그 마음을 돌이키기 위함이라는 것입니다. 사도 바울도 3-4절을 보면 파문의 결정을 내릴 때 자신이 혼자 결정하는 것이 아니라 교회와 함께 주 예수의 이름과 능력으로 결정을 하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 이렇듯 공동체 안에 죄를 대하는 것은 신중해야 합니다. 그리고 그 결정은 벌을 주는 행정이 아니라 그 사람을 살리고 공동체를 살리기 위한 것임을 기억하고 실행해야 하는 것입니다.

[2. The Purpose of Purging is Salvation (v. 3-5)]

Second, we must remember that the purpose of removing evil is to bring about salvation. It is easy to criticize or judge when someone must be disciplined. However, the ultimate goal of removing a member from the community is to save that person.

In verse 5, Paul says, "Hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord." This is a difficult expression. In 1 Timothy 1:19-20, Paul uses similar language regarding Hymenaeus and Alexander, stating he handed them over to Satan "to be taught not to blaspheme." To "hand over to Satan" refers to excommunication—removing someone from the protection of the Church (the Body of Christ) and into the world (Satan’s domain). The goal is not to discard them, but to apply the most serious form of discipline so they might realize their wrong, be disciplined, and ultimately be restored. Discipline is not a cold administrative punishment; it is a life-giving act intended to save both the person and the community.

세번째, 작은 죄를 무시하지 말고 끊어버려야 합니다. 사도바울은 6절에서 “적은 누룩이 온 덩어리에 퍼지는 것을 알지 못하느냐?”라고 묻습니다. 이것은 작은 죄을 적은 누룩으로 비유하고 온 공동체를 온 덩어리로 비유하는 말이지요. 즉 작은 죄가 삽시간에 온 공동체에 퍼지게 된다는 말입니다. 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 우리는 누룩이 없는 새 덩어리가 되었습니다. 그런데 우리가 예전에 짓던 죄악들, 즉 묵은 누룩을 지니고 있을 수 있겠습니까? 아니면 악하고 악의에 찬 새 누룩을 우리 가운데 품을 수 있겠습니까? 그럴 수 없지요. 우리는 누룩이 없는 순전하고 진실한 새 덩어리가 되어야 하는 것입니다. 죄의 습성은 언제나 가장 작은 것에서 시작합니다. 우리가 죄를 두려워해서는 안되지만 그러나 죄를 가벼이 여겨서도 안되는 것입니다. 그것은 처음에도 말씀드렸듯이 우리 스스로를 죄를 다룰 수 있는 사람으로 생각하는 교만함인 것이지요. 그래서 사도바울은 11절에서 교회 안에서 죄악을 범하는 사람들과 사귀지 말고 함께 교제하지도 말라고 하는 것입니다. 이는 교회 안에 죄악이 퍼지지 않도록 막는 역할을 합니다. 죄악에 동조하지 말고, 그것을 묵인하지 말며, 죄를 무겁게 여기고 끊어내야 합니다.

[3. Do Not Ignore "Little" Sins (v. 6-11)]

Third, we must not ignore small sins but cut them off. Paul asks in verse 6, "Don’t you know that a little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough?" Here, a small sin is compared to leaven, and the entire community to a batch of dough. A small, unaddressed sin can quickly permeate and corrupt the entire community.

Because Christ died for us, we have become a new, "unleavened" batch. Can we then hold onto the "old leaven" of our past sins? Can we harbor "malice and wickedness"? Certainly not. We must be a new batch of sincerity and truth. Sin always starts small. While we shouldn't live in fear of sin, we must never treat it lightly. To think we can "handle" sin without it spreading is the height of pride. This is why Paul instructs us not to associate with those inside the church who persist in unrepentant sin. It is a safeguard to prevent the spread of spiritual infection.

말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 말씀은 쉬운 말씀이 아닙니다. 공동체 안의 죄의 문제를 다루기 때문입니다. 우리는 모두 좋은 사람이 되고 싶어 합니다. 그러나 본문은 공동체 안의 죄를 무시하는 것은 교만함이라고까지 말합니다. 우리는 공동체 안의 죄악을 애통해 해야 합니다. 그리고 거룩한 공동체를 이루기 위해 노력해야 합니다. 죄를 미워하는 마음으로 우리는 우리 안의 죄악을 제거해야 합니다. 그리고 그 과정은 신중하게 지체를 살릴 수 있도록 해야 할 것입니다. 그래서 하나님께서 찾으시는 거룩한 공동체가 우리 한사랑 교회가 되기를 기도합니다.

[Conclusion: A Prayer for Holiness]

This is not an easy message. We all want to be "nice" people. However, the Word tells us that ignoring sin within the community is a form of arrogance.

• We must mourn over the presence of sin.

• We must strive to build a holy community.

• With a heart that hates sin but loves the person, we must carefully purge the evil to restore our brothers and sisters.

I pray that Hansarang Church will be the holy community that God is looking for—a place of purity, truth, and restorative love.
