Live Differently: Kingdom Standards in a Litigious World (고전/1Cor 6:1~11)

[Lawsuits Among Believers]

1 If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? 5 I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? 6 But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!

7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? 8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters. 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

[Introduction: The Land of Lawsuits]

Recently, thanks to a generous donation from one of our youth members, our young adult group went to see a Tacoma Rainiers baseball game. While watching, I noticed high netting stretching from behind home plate all the way down the foul lines. I didn't recall seeing such extensive netting at Fenway Park in Boston, so I asked why it was there.

I was told that in the past, someone was hit by a foul ball that went over the fence. As it happened, that person was a lawyer. He sued the stadium, won the case, and received a massive settlement. Since then, the netting has stayed up. Living in America, we hear stories like this all the time—someone slipping in a park and suing the city, or someone suing over a cup of coffee being too hot. America is often nicknamed the "Land of Lawsuits."

So, what should happen when financial or property disputes arise between believers within the church? Should we take full advantage of living in this litigious society and sue one another? Paul has a very different story to tell. Today, I want to share a message titled: “Live a Life Different from the World.”

[1. Remember Your True Status (v. 1-6)]

Paul points out several issues in the Corinthian church. Yesterday, we looked at how they ignored blatant immorality; today, he addresses the issue of believers taking each other to court. Paul rebukes them for bringing internal financial disputes before worldly judges. Why?

His first reason is that believers are different from the world. Not just different, but occupying a much higher standing. Let’s look at verse 2: “Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?”

What does it mean that the saints will judge the world? Verse 3 even says, “Do you not know that we will judge angels?” Notice that this is in the future tense—"will judge." This points to the Second Coming of Jesus. While we are waiting for Him now, the early church believed Jesus would return very "soon." When He returns, He will execute a righteous final judgment. For believers, this is a moment of ultimate victory and joy because, according to Revelation 20:4-5, the saints are not the objects of judgment but are given the authority to judge.

Those who did not receive the mark of the beast will reign with Christ for a thousand years. This is the "First Resurrection." If believers are destined to reign and judge with Christ, how can they take their disputes to be judged by the world—the very world they are destined to judge? Their true citizenship is in the Kingdom of God. If they remember their true identity, they must resolve their disputes differently. This is why Paul says, “Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?”

[2. The Root of Injustice: Greed (v. 7-10)]

The second reason Paul rebukes them is that these lawsuits reveal an underlying unrighteous greed. Verse 7 says, “The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already.” In other words, before the judge even bangs the gavel, they have already lost the spiritual battle.

Paul asks them: "Why can't you just accept the injustice? Why can't you let yourselves be cheated?" He is implying that the only reason they won't let it go is because of greed. If there were no greed, what reason would they have to fight so bitterly?

In verse 8, Paul laments: “Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters!” Their greed was driving them to do wrong and cheat their own family in Christ, leading to "mud-slinging" battles in public courts. Paul then reminds them of the consequence of such unrighteousness in verses 9–10: “...nor thieves nor the greedy... nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” Behind the mask of seeking "legal justice," Paul exposes their hearts filled with greed and deception. This is a stern warning.

[Conclusion: You are New Creations (v. 11)]

However, Paul does not end with a rebuke. He reminds them of who they are now in verse 11: “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

He is saying, "That greed and injustice—that was your old self. But now, you are new." We often forget who we are while living in this world. Though we walk on this earth, we are citizens of heaven. Our old selves died on the cross with Jesus, and we have been made new—washed, holy, and righteous.

Therefore, let us live as saints. Let us live not by the standards and methods of this world, but by the standards and methods of the Kingdom of God.

Let us pray.
