1 Sing to the Lord a new song,

    for he has done marvelous things;

his right hand and his holy arm

    have worked salvation for him.

2 The Lord has made his salvation known

    and revealed his righteousness to the nations.

3 He has remembered his love

    and his faithfulness to Israel;

all the ends of the earth have seen

    the salvation of our God.

4 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,

    burst into jubilant song with music;

5 make music to the Lord with the harp,

    with the harp and the sound of singing,

6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—

    shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

98:7 바다와 거기 충만한 것과 세계와 그 중에 거주하는 자는 다 외칠지어다

98:8 여호와 앞에서 큰 물은 박수할지어다 산악이 함께 즐겁게 노래할지어다

98:9 그가 땅을 심판하러 임하실 것임이로다 그가 의로 세계를 판단하시며 공평으로 그의 백성을 심판하시리로다

7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,

    the world, and all who live in it.

8 Let the rivers clap their hands,

    let the mountains sing together for joy;

9 let them sing before the Lord,

    for he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness

    and the peoples with equity.

            오늘 본문의 말씀은 어제 우리가 함께 보았던 시편 97편의 주제인 ‘여호와의 다스리심’ 이 어떻게 구체적인 승리와 구원으로 나타났는지를 노래합니다. 화자는 우리에게 시작부터 “새 노래로 여호와께 찬송하라” 라고 권면하지요. 그리고 그 이유를 하나님께서 기이한 일을 행하셨기 때문이라고 설명합니다. 그리고 그 기이한 일은 바로 하나님께서 우리에게 구원을 베푸신 일이라고 말하고 있지요. 오늘은 “기이한 일을 행하시는 여호와를 찬양하라”는 제목으로 하나님이 행하신 기이한 일이란 무엇인지, 그리고 우리는 어떻게 하나님을 찬양해야하는지 나누어보기 원합니다.

[Introduction: From Sovereignty to Salvation]

Today’s passage sings of how “the Lord’s reign”—the theme of Psalm 97 we looked at yesterday—is manifested through concrete victory and salvation. Right from the start, the speaker urges us: “Oh sing to the Lord a new song!” The reason given is that God has done "marvelous things." These marvelous deeds are the very works of salvation He has bestowed upon us. Today, under the title “Praise the Lord Who Performs Marvelous Deeds,” I want to share what these marvelous works are and how we should respond in praise.

            서론에서 말씀드렸듯이 하나님께서 행하신 기이한 일은 우리에게 구원을 베푸신 일입니다. 오늘 본문의 1-3절은 하나님의 구원에 대해서 계속 반복하며 이야기 하고 있습니다. 하나님께서 행하신 그 구원은 어떤 특징을 가지고 있습니까? 첫번째, “그의 오른손과 거룩한 팔로 자기를 위하여 구원을 베푸셨”습니다. 이 말씀이 말하고 있는 것은 구원은 하나님이 행하신 것이라는 것입니다. 인간의 협력이나 어떤 다른 존재의 도움 없이 오직 하나님의 전능하신 힘으로만 성취된 것입니다. “그의 오른손과 거룩한 팔” 하나님의 절대적인 능력과 힘을 말하고 있는 것이지요. 두번째, 이 구원을 베푸셨던 동기가 ‘자기를 위하여’ 라고 합니다. 무슨 뜻입니까? 하나님께서 우리를 구원하신 이유가 우리가 구원받을만한 사람들이었기때문이 아니라는 것입니다. 우리는 아무 자격이 없었는데 하나님께서 당신의 영광과 당신의 이름을 위하여 우리를 구원하셨다는 것입니다. 이것이 왜 중요한가? 하나님께서 당신을 위하여 행하신 구원이기 때문에 이 구원은 결코 취소되거나 실패할 수 없는 것이 되기 때문입니다. 우리의 자격이 아닌 하나님의 하나님되심이 이 구원을 베푸시는 것입니다. 세번째, 이 구원은 비밀리에 은밀하게 이루어진 것이 아닙니다. “뭇 나라의 목전에서 명백히” 나타내셨습니다. 그들에게 그의 공의의 구원을 알게 하십니다. 그래서 누구도 하나님의 구원을 부인할 수 없습니다. 네번째, 하나님께서 이 기이한 구원을 베푸신 이유는 “이스라엘의 집에 베푸신 인자와 성실을 기억하셨”기 때문입니다. 하나님의 구원은 당신께서 당신의 백성과 맺으신 언약에 기반합니다. 그렇기에 하나님의 구원은 신실하신 하나님처럼 바뀌지 않습니다. 하나님께서 행하신 행하신 구원은 그래서 기이한 일입니다. 우리가 그것을 깨달을 때에 우리는 진정한 새 노래를 부를 수 있습니다.

[1. The Nature of God’s Marvelous Salvation]

As mentioned, the marvelous deed God has performed is the salvation He has granted us. Verses 1–3 repeat and emphasize this work. What are the characteristics of this salvation?

• First, it is a work of Sole Agency: “His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.” This means salvation is God’s work alone. It was accomplished without human cooperation or external help, solely by His almighty power. "His right hand and holy arm" signify His absolute strength.

• Second, the motive is “For Himself”: Why did God save us? It wasn't because we were worthy. We had no merit, yet God saved us for the sake of His own glory and His Name. Why is this important? Because since it is a salvation God performed for Himself, it can never be canceled or fail. It is not our qualification, but God’s "God-ness" that sustains this salvation.

• Third, it is an Open Manifestation: This was not done in secret. He has revealed His righteousness “in the sight of the nations.” He made His saving justice known so clearly that no one can deny it.

• Fourth, it is a Faithful Salvation: God performed this marvelous deed because He “remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel.” His salvation is anchored in the covenant He made with His people. Like our faithful God, His salvation remains unchanging.

When we truly realize the depth of this marvelous work, we can begin to sing a genuine "new song."

            자 그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 하나님을 찬양해야 할까요? 본문의 4-8절은 하나님을 어떻게 찬양해야 하는지 그 본을 우리에게 보여줍니다. 첫번째는 즐거움입니다. 이런 하나님의 기이하신 구원을 맛 본 사람들에게는 즐거움이 있습니다. 기쁨이 있습니다. 선지자 하박국이 고백하였던 것이 바로 이것이 아니겠습니까? 하박국 3:17-18 “비록 무화과나무가 무성치 못하며… 열매가 없으며… 소출이 없으며… 식물이 없으며… 양이 없으며 외양간에 소가 없을찌라도 나는 여호와를 인하여 즐거워하며 나의 구원의 하나님을 인하여 기뻐하리로다” 바로 이것이 여호와의 기이한 일을 경험한 사람들이 부르는 찬양인 것이지요. 또한 두번째, 소리치라고 합니다. 외치라고 합니다. 6절에 보면 “왕이신 여호와 앞에 즐겁게 소리칠지어다”라고 말하고 있습니다. 이는 왕이 행차하거나 즉위할 때에 백성들이 열광적으로 환호하며 소리치는 그런 외침을 말합니다. 하나님께서 우리의 왕되심을 환호하는 것입니다. 즐거워하는 것입니다. 세번째는 각양각색의 악기를 사용하여 하나님을 찬양하는 것입니다. 그것이 수금이든, 목소리든, 나팔이든, 호각이든 하나님께 음악으로 즐겁게 노래하는 것이지요. 자 그런데 7-8절을 보니 찬양의 주체는 인간만을 가르키지 않습니다. 바다와 거기 충만한 것. 즉, 미지의 세계와 그곳의 피조물들. 그리고 그들이 알던 세계와 그 모든 거주민들, 심지어 큰 물들은 손뼉을 치라고 합니다. 높은 산맥들이 하나님을 즐겁게 노래한다고 합니다. 거대한 자연조차 자신의 창조주이자 왕이신 하나님을 알아보고 찬양하며 환호한다는 것이지요.

[2. How and Who Should Praise the Lord?]

How, then, should we praise God? Verses 4–8 provide the model.

• With Joy: Those who have tasted this marvelous salvation possess a natural delight. Is this not exactly what the prophet Habakkuk confessed? “Though the fig tree should not blossom... yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation” (Hab 3:17-18). This is the praise of those who have experienced His marvelous deeds.

• With a Shout: Verse 6 says, “Make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!” This refers to the enthusiastic, thunderous acclaim people give when a king is crowned or passes by. We are cheering for our King!

• With Every Instrument: Whether with the lyre, the voice, trumpets, or horns, we are to sing joyfully to God with all kinds of music.

• A Universal Chorus: Verses 7–8 show that praise is not limited to humanity. The sea and everything in it—the unknown world and its creatures—and even the floods are told to clap their hands. The mountains are to sing for joy. All of nature recognizes and cheers for its Creator and King.

            자 그런데 9절에 가면 이제껏 우리가 구원이라고 알고 있었던 것을 심판이라고 말합니다. “그가 땅을 심판하러 임하실 것임이로다” 우리는 이 말씀을 통해 하나님의 심판이 우리가 두려워할 것이 아니라 우리에게는 곧 구원이고 회복이라는 것을 알아야 합니다. 왜입니까? 우리는 어제 말씀에서 하나님께서 다스리시는 기준이 의와 공평이라고 말씀드린바가 있습니다. 오늘 9절 말씀에서 하나님이 무엇으로 심판하십니까? “그가 의로 세계를 판단하시며 공평으로 그의 백성을 심판하시리로다” 하나님의 백성에게 이 심판은 공포가 아니라 기쁨입니다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 심판은 단순히 죄를 벌하고 파괴하는 것이 아니라 죄로 인해 깨어지고 뒤틀린 세상을 다시 창조 본연의 아름다운 모습으로 교정하고 회복하시는 것이기 때문입니다. 그래서 사람들 뿐만아니라 만물이 하나님의 왕되심을 기뻐하며 소리쳐 외치는 것입니다.

[3. The Paradigm Shift: Judgment as Restoration]

In verse 9, the passage takes an interesting turn. What we have been calling "salvation" is now described as "judgment." “For he comes to judge the earth.” Through this, we must realize that God’s judgment is not something to fear, but rather our salvation and restoration. Why? As we saw yesterday, God’s standard of rule is righteousness and equity. Verse 9 asks: how does He judge? “He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.”

For God’s people, this judgment is not a source of terror but a source of joy. God’s judgment is not merely about punishing sin and destroying; it is about correcting and restoring a world broken and twisted by sin back to its original, beautiful purpose of creation. This is why all of creation—not just people—shouts for joy at His kingship.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 이스라엘 백성들을 이 시편을 읊으며 하나님이 행하셨던 기이했던 출애굽의 이적들과 기사들을 생각했을 것입니다. 그러나 우리는 이 말씀에서 예수님을 봅니다. 우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으셨습니다. 우리의 힘과 자격이 아닌 오직 하나님의 영광을 위하여 이 일을 이루셨습니다. 예수님의 십자가는 기이한 것입니다. 세상사람들에게는 미련한 것인데 구원을 받는 우리에게는 하나님의 능력이라고 하지 않았습니까? 이 기이한 하나님의 구원을 받은 우리는 그래서 하나님을 찬양하는 것입니다. 소리치고 외치며 주님의 왕되심을 환호하는 것입니다. 다시 오실 주님은 오늘 말씀처럼 이 세상의 심판자로 의와 공평으로 우리를 구원하실 것입니다. 그 소망이 우리 삶의 모든 슬픔과 어려움을 이기게 합니다. 여러분, 오늘 여러분께서는 어떤 새 노래를 부르시겠습니까? 우리 가운데 그 기이한 일을 행하신 여호와를 찬양합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

[Conclusion: Our New Song in Christ]

When the Israelites recited this Psalm, they likely thought of the marvelous miracles of the Exodus. But today, we see Jesus. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He accomplished this not by our strength, but solely for His glory.

The Cross of Jesus is "marvelous." To the world, it is foolishness, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. Having received this marvelous salvation, we praise Him. We shout, we cheer, and we celebrate His kingship. The returning Lord will be the Judge of this world who saves us with righteousness and equity. This hope allows us to overcome all the sorrows and difficulties of our lives.

Brothers and sisters, what "new song" will you sing today? We praise the Lord who has done marvelous things among us.
