1 Sing to the Lord a new song;

    sing to the Lord, all the earth.

2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;

    proclaim his salvation day after day.

3 Declare his glory among the nations,

    his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

96:4 여호와는 위대하시니 지극히 찬양할 것이요 모든 신들보다 경외할 것임이여

96:5 만국의 모든 신들은 우상들이지만 여호와께서는 하늘을 지으셨음이로다

96:6 존귀와 위엄이 그의 앞에 있으며 능력과 아름다움이 그의 성소에 있도다

4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;

    he is to be feared above all gods.

5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,

    but the Lord made the heavens.

6 Splendor and majesty are before him;

    strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

7 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,

    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;

    bring an offering and come into his courts.

9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;

    tremble before him, all the earth.

10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”

    The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;

    he will judge the peoples with equity.

96:11 하늘은 기뻐하고 땅은 즐거워하며 바다와 거기에 충만한 것이 외치고

96:12 밭과 그 가운데에 있는 모든 것은 즐거워할지로다 그 때 숲의 모든 나무들이 여호와 앞에서 즐거이 노래하리니

96:13 그가 임하시되 땅을 심판하러 임하실 것임이라 그가 의로 세계를 심판하시며 그의 진실하심으로 백성을 심판하시리로다

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;

    let the sea resound, and all that is in it.

12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;

    let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes,

    he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness

    and the peoples in his faithfulness.

1990년대 후반 한국기독교를 휩쓴 영적인 운동이 있었는데, 바로 부흥입니다. 집회 이름이기도 하고, 고형원 선교사가 이끄는 선교 단체 이름이기도 하고, 찬양의 제목이고 동시에 한국예수전도단 8집 앨범의 제목이기도 한 것이 부흥입니다. 당시 모든 한국 교회가 “이 땅의 황무함을 보소서…”라고 시작하는 새노래로 하나님께 우리의 간절한 소망을 올려 드렸습니다. 그 부흥의 작곡가인 고형원 선교사의 곡 중에 “영광을 돌리세”라는 찬양이 있는데 그 가사는 다음과 같습니다.  

영광을 돌리세 우리 하나님께

존귀와 위엄과 능력과 아름다움

만방의 모든 신은 헛된 우상이니

오직 하늘의 하나님 그 영광 찬양해

주님의 영광 모든 나라위에

주님의 영광 온 세계 위에

하늘에 계신 우리 아버지 영광 찬양해

우리 주님 나라 영원하리라

우리 주님 뜻은 이뤄지리라

바로 오늘 본문 5~8절을 중심으로 하여 가사로 쓴 곡입니다.

Give Glory to Our God

In the late 1990s, a spiritual movement swept through Korean Christianity known as "Revival". This was the name of a massive assembly, the name of the mission organization led by Missionary Ko Hyung-won, the title of a famous worship song, and the title of the 8th album by YWAM (Youth With A Mission) Korea. At that time, churches across Korea lifted their earnest desires to God through a "new song" that began with the lyrics, "Look upon the desolation of this land...".

Among the compositions by Missionary Ko Hyung-won is a song titled "Give Glory," with the following lyrics:

This song was written based primarily on verses 5–8 of today’s passage.

새 노래로 여호와께 노래하라 (1~6절)

본 시는 모든 열방과 모든 피조 세계가 여호와를 찬양하라는 요청이 핵심 메시지입니다. 또한 모든 나라, 만민에게 하나님의 의로운 통치를 선언하는 하나의 즉위시이기도 합니다. 동시에 만방에 여호와의 구원과 통치를 선포하는 선교적 목적을 가지고 있는 시입니다.

시편 96편은 다윗이 언약궤를 옮기는 사건을 기록한 역대상 16:23~33절 아삽과 찬양대의 감사 찬양의 일부를 포함합니다. 그래서 사람들은 이 찬양이 왕정시대에 성전에서 절기에 불려진 노래라고 추측하기도 합니다.

더 나아가 어떤 학자들은 이 시가 다윗의 시라고 주장하고, 70인역LXX은 아예 다윗의 시로 기록하고 있습니다. 하지만 본 시의 반복되는 어법과 문체가 전형적인 후기 히브리인들의 방식이기에 아마도 포로기 이후 성전이 재봉헌될 무렵에 지어진 시라고 보는 것이 옳을 것입니다.

시인은 먼저 온 땅을 향하여 찬양으로 초청합니다. 세 번에 걸친 여호와께 노래하라(1, 2)는 요청을 합니다. 찬양의 대상은 여호와시고, 찬양의 주체는 온 땅이며, 찬양할 도구는 새 노래입니다. 여기서 새 노래는 하나님의 구원을 그 내용으로 합니다. 그러므로 새 노래를 부르는 목적은 여호와의 구원을 만방에 전파하는 것입니다. 70인역은 전파하다를 아예 복음을 전하다로 번역합니다.

한편 새 노래는 무조건 새로 지은 노래를 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 날마다 새로운 마음으로 부르는 노래를 의미합니다. 예레미야 선지자가 그랬던 것처럼 날마다 새롭게 부어주시는 하나님의 구원의 감격을 노래하는 것입니다.

여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다

이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다 (애 3:22~23)

시인은 2연(4~6절)에서 찬양의 내용을 기록합니다. 피조물은 창조주요 참된 신인 여호와의 구원과 영광을 노래해야 합니다. 여호와 하나님은 세상의 모든 신들보다 마땅히 경외를 받으셔야 합니다. 만국의 모든 신들은 그저 죽은 우상일 뿐이지만 하나님은 하늘을 지으신 분입니다. 사탄은 공중의 권세를 잡은 자(엡 2:2)이지만, 하나님은 그 하늘(공중)을 지으신 분입니다. 그러므로 그에게 존귀와 위엄, 능력과 아름다움이 있습니다.

Sing to the Lord a New Song (Verses 1–6)

The core message of this Psalm is a call for all nations and all of creation to praise Jehovah. It is an Enthronement Psalm that declares God’s righteous reign to all peoples. Simultaneously, it serves a missional purpose by proclaiming Jehovah’s salvation and sovereignty to the world.

Psalm 96 includes parts of the thanksgiving song offered by Asaph and the choir, as recorded in 1 Chronicles 16:23–33, when David moved the Ark of the Covenant. Consequently, some speculate it was sung during festivals at the Temple during the monarchy. While some scholars and the Septuagint (LXX) attribute it to David, the linguistic style suggests it was likely written around the time the Temple was rededicated after the Babylonian exile.

The psalmist invites the whole earth to praise, repeating the command to "Sing to the Lord" three times.

• The Object of Praise: Jehovah.

• The Subject of Praise: All the earth.

• The Tool of Praise: A "new song".

  
  

A "new song" focuses on God’s salvation. In the Septuagint, the word "proclaim" is even translated as "preach the gospel". A new song is not necessarily a brand-new composition; rather, it is a song sung with a heart made new every day. Like the prophet Jeremiah, it is singing of the thrill of God’s salvation poured out afresh each morning.

In the second stanza (vv. 4–6), the psalmist records the content of the praise: creatures must sing of the salvation and glory of the Creator. Jehovah is worthy of fear above all gods; while the gods of nations are merely dead idols, God is the maker of the heavens. Though Satan is the "ruler of the kingdom of the air" (Eph 2:2), God is the one who created that very air (the heavens). Therefore, honor, majesty, strength, and glory belong to Him.

아름답고 거룩한 것으로 여호와께 예배하라 (7~13절)

이제 시인은 만국 족속을 아름답고 거룩한 것으로 하나님을 예배하는 곳으로 초대합니다. 합당한 영광과 권능을 여호와께 돌릴지어다를 세번이나 반복합니다. 그의 영광에 합당한 완전한 영광을 돌리라는 의미입니다. 시인은 구체적인 예배의 방법도 제시합니다.

먼저는 예물을 가지고 나와야 합니다. 하나님께서는 모세를 통하여 빈 손으로 하나님 앞에 나오지 말라고 말씀 하셨습니다(출 23:15). 그렇다면 이것이 예물, 곧 오늘날로 치자면 헌금만을 의미하는 것일까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 오히려 하나님은 헛된 예물도 제사도 다 싫다고 그치라고도 말씀 하신바가 있습니다(사 1:10~15). 그러므로 여기서 말하는 예물은 우리의 전인격이 포함된 물질이나 시간, 헌신 등 모든 것을 말하는 것입니다. 하나님 앞에는 돈만이 아닌 우리 자신과 나의 삶 전부를 가지고 나와야 합니다.

다음은 아름답고 거룩한 것으로 예배해야 합니다. 원문을 그대로 직역하면 거룩한 장식(복장)으로 입니다. 아마도 제사장의 의복과 예배하는 자가 갖춰야 할 거룩한 복장을 의미하는 것으로 보입니다. 결국 하나님 앞에 서는 자들은 거룩한 세마포 옷을 갈아 입어야 하는데, 그 유일한 옷은 예수 그리스도의 보혈의 옷입니다. 하나님 앞에 나오는 자는 아름답고 거룩한 옷, 곧 그리스도로 옷 입어야 합니다.

그렇게 나온 자들이 즐거이 노래하고 예배하는데, 그 내용은 의롭고 견고하고 공평한 여호와의 세계 통치를 찬양하는 것입니다. 만물이 의로운 심판주로 오실 하나님을 찬양합니다. 심판의 날은 두려운 날이지만, 하나님의 백성들에게는 구원의 날입니다.

Worship the Lord in the Splendor of Holiness (Verses 7–13)

The psalmist invites the families of nations to worship God with beauty and holiness. The phrase "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name" is repeated three times to emphasize giving Him complete and perfect glory.

The psalmist suggests specific ways to worship:

1. Bring an Offering: God commanded through Moses never to appear before Him empty-handed (Exodus 23:15). This does not mean only money; God has previously stated He dislikes hollow offerings and sacrifices (Isaiah 1:10–15). The "offering" refers to our entire being—our resources, time, and devotion. We must bring our whole lives before Him.

2. Worship in Holy Splendor: Literally translated, this means in "holy attire". While it refers to the priestly garments or proper liturgical dress, spiritually it means those standing before God must wear the fine linen of righteousness—the blood of Jesus Christ. To approach God, we must "clothe ourselves" with Christ.

   
   

Those who come this way worship joyfully, praising God’s righteous, firm, and fair governance of the world. All creation praises God, who comes as the righteous Judge. While the Day of Judgment is fearsome, for God's people, it is the Day of Salvation.

이 땅의 불의한 모습과 불공평한 재판을 보면서 의인들은 마음이 상합니다. 하지만 주님이 다시 오실 때는 비로소 모든 하나님의 백성들이 웃을 수 있습니다. 의로 심판하시는 재판관이 오시기 때문입니다. 조금만 힘을 내서 그 이름에 합당한 영광을 하나님께 올려 드립시다. 그때는 비로소 진정으로 기쁨의 노래를 부를 수 있을 것입니다.

Although the righteous are grieved by the injustice of this world, they will finally rejoice when the Lord returns, for He comes as the Judge who rules with righteousness.

Let us take heart and offer the glory due His name. Only then can we truly sing the song of ultimate joy.
