1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High

    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,

    my God, in whom I trust.”

3 Surely he will save you

    from the fowler’s snare

    and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his feathers,

    and under his wings you will find refuge;

    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

5 You will not fear the terror of night,

    nor the arrow that flies by day,

6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,

    nor the plague that destroys at midday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,

    ten thousand at your right hand,

    but it will not come near you.

8 You will only observe with your eyes

    and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”

    and you make the Most High your dwelling,

10 no harm will overtake you,

    no disaster will come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you

    to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands,

    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;

    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;

    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;

    I will be with him in trouble,

    I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life I will satisfy him

    and show him my salvation.”

Introduction

The message of today’s passage is very simple: Make the Lord your refuge. When you trust in God and remain by His side, He will protect you. Even when you encounter trials, He will be with you and deliver you from them. Today, I want to share a message titled: “The Lord is My Refuge.”

1. Dwelling, Not Just Visiting (v. 1–2)

Let us first read verses 1 and 2 together:

"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'"

In verse 1, the speaker talks as if referring to a third party. But in verse 2, he shifts to the first person: "I will say of the Lord..." Who, then, is the person living in God mentioned in verse 1? Yes, that’s right—it is the speaker himself. It is as if he is reminding himself, whispering to his own soul to confirm where his true home is.

Where is that place? It is "the shelter (secret place) of the Most High" and "the shadow of the Almighty." A "secret place" is a private place. If God were a King, this would be His private inner chamber where you can speak with Him one-on-one, away from the eyes of the world. It is like the Holy of Holies—the most sacred place where you meet God intimately. It is the safest place in the universe. Do you have such a place? A place where you meet God alone? A place like the Holy of Holies? If you do, how often do you go there?

Verse 1 says, "Whoever dwells in the shelter... will rest (abide) in the shadow." This is not a place you visit once in a while. It means to reside there. It describes a continuous, habitual state, not a one-time event. It is not a place you run to only when you have a problem to solve; it is the place where you live and breathe every single day. It is the place you always return to, no matter what happens. That is what it means to make the Most High your dwelling. When we remind ourselves of this and live accordingly, we can truly say to the Lord: "He is my refuge, my fortress, and my God."

2. The Reality of Protection (v. 3–8)

What happens when we make God our refuge? In verses 3–8, the speaker shifts to the second person ("You") and declares what God will do.

  • God will save you from the snares of people and deadly diseases.

  • His faithfulness will be your shield and your rampart.

  • You will not fear the terrors of the night, nor the arrows of war, nor the plagues that stalk in darkness.

Even if a thousand fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, the disaster will not come near you. Verse 8 says, "You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked." This speaks not only of God's protection for the believer but also of His judgment upon those who seek to do harm. When you make God your refuge, you are not just a recipient of salvation; you will witness the justice of God as He deals with those who practice evil.

3. Commanding the Angels (v. 9–13)

The speaker then reiterates his conviction in verses 9 and 10. Let’s read this together, but as we do, please insert your own name:

"[Name], because you say, 'The Lord is my refuge,' and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent."

How does God protect us? He says He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. To illustrate how perfectly this expresses God’s protection, remember that these are the very verses (v. 11–12) that Satan used when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness. If even the enemy recognizes the power of this promise, how much more should we trust it? When we make God our refuge, His protection over us is absolute.

4. God’s Direct Testimony (v. 14–16)

Up until now, we have heard the words of the Psalmist. But from verse 14, God Himself speaks about the believer. We might wonder, "What kind of person is this that God protects so fiercely?" Let's hear God's perspective. He gives three reasons:

  1. "Because he loves me..." (v. 14). This "love" isn't just an emotion; the original meaning is to "cling" or "bind oneself" to God. It means being attached to God like glue, refusing to let go.

  2. "Because he acknowledges my name..." (v. 14). This is someone who knows God's character and His deeds through personal experience. They know who God is through a deep, personal relationship.

  3. "He will call on me..." (v. 15). This is a person of prayer. No matter what happens, they trust God enough to cry out to Him.

These traits show that God's promises of salvation stem from a deep relationship of trust. God promises: "I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble." What a comfort! He doesn't just stop there; He promises to deliver us, honor us, satisfy us with long life, and show us His salvation.

Conclusion

My dear brothers and sisters, make the Lord your refuge. Make the Almighty your dwelling place. Hold fast to God with an unswerving love—cling to Him like you are inseparable. Strive to know Him more deeply every day. And call upon Him in prayer.

God will answer you. He will be with you in times of trouble and rescue you. I pray in the name of the Lord that your daily life will be filled with the experience of His salvation as you confess: "The Lord is my refuge!"

Amen.
