24:1 예수께서 성전에서 나와서 가실 때에 제자들이 성전 건물들을 가리켜 보이려고 나아오니

24:2 대답하여 이르시되 너희가 이 모든 것을 보지 못하느냐 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 돌 하나도 돌 위에 남지 않고 다 무너뜨려지리라

1 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”

24:3 예수께서 감람 산 위에 앉으셨을 때에 제자들이 조용히 와서 이르되 우리에게 이르소서 어느 때에 이런 일이 있겠사오며 또 주의 임하심과 세상 끝에는 무슨 징조가 있사오리이까

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

24:4 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 너희가 사람의 미혹을 받지 않도록 주의하라

24:5 많은 사람이 내 이름으로 와서 이르되 나는 그리스도라 하여 많은 사람을 미혹하리라

24:6 난리와 난리 소문을 듣겠으나 너희는 삼가 두려워 말라 이런 일이 있어야 하되 아직 끝은 아니니라

24:7 민족이 민족을, 나라가 나라를 대적하여 일어나겠고 곳곳에 기근과 지진이 있으리니

24:8 이 모든 것은 재난의 시작이니라

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

24:9 그 때에 사람들이 너희를 환난에 넘겨 주겠으며 너희를 죽이리니 너희가 내 이름 때문에 모든 민족에게 미움을 받으리라

24:10 그 때에 많은 사람이 실족하게 되어 서로 잡아 주고 서로 미워하겠으며

24:11 거짓 선지자가 많이 일어나 많은 사람을 미혹하겠으며

24:12 불법이 성하므로 많은 사람의 사랑이 식어지리라

24:13 그러나 끝까지 견디는 자는 구원을 얻으리라

24:14 이 천국 복음이 모든 민족에게 증언되기 위하여 온 세상에 전파되리니 그제야 끝이 오리라

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

예수님께서 성전을 나오실 때에 제자들은 성전 건물들을 보고 감탄하면서 예수님께 나아오지요. 아마도 예수님께서 자신들과 똑같이 감동하실 것이라고 기대했던 것 같습니다. 그런데 예수님은 전혀 의외의 말씀을 하십니다. “너희들의 눈 앞에 있는 이 성전이 돌 하나도 돌 위에 남지 않고 다 무너지리라.” 이때 제자들은 그 자리에서 예수님께 묻지 않고 예루살렘 성 바깥 감람 산 위에 이르렀을 때에야 예수님께 조용히 나아와서 묻습니다. 첫째는 언제 이 일이 일어나는지. 둘째는 예수님의 임하심과 세상의 끝에는 무슨 징조가 있을 것인지. 오늘은 이 질문에 대한 대답을 하시는 예수님의 말씀을 함께 보면서 “해산의 고통을 끝까지 견디라”는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: A Shocking Prophecy]

As Jesus was walking away from the temple grounds, His disciples came up to Him, calling His attention to the magnificent buildings. They likely expected Jesus to be as impressed as they were. However, Jesus gave an entirely unexpected response: "Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

Stunned, the disciples didn't ask Him about this immediately. It was only when they reached the Mount of Olives, outside the city of Jerusalem, that they came to Him privately with two questions:

1. When will this happen?

2. What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?

Today, as we look at Jesus’ answer, I want to share a message titled: “Endure the Birth Pains to the End.”

먼저 제자들은 왜 이런 질문을 했을까요? 어제 말씀에서 예수님께서는 예루살렘과 그 성전이 황폐하여 버려질 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러면서 마지막으로 하신 말씀이 이들이 예수님이 다시 오실 때 까지 예수님을 보지 못할 것이라는 말씀이지요. 그 말씀을 들었을 때에는 그저 종교지도자들에게 상징적으로 하시는 말씀인 줄 알았는데 오늘 성전이 완전히 무너질 것이라고 또 말씀하시는 것을 보니 ‘이게 진짜구나, 뭔가가 오고 있구나’ 하고 깨달은게 아닌가 싶습니다. 그래서 이들은 ‘예수님께서 말씀하신 성전이 무너지는지 때’란 언제 인지를 물어보는 것이지요.

그런데 그 다음 질문이 재미있습니다. “주의 임하심과 세상의 끝에는 무슨 징조가 있사오리이까?” 이들은 이 둘을 같은 시간 선에 놓고 있습니다. 즉, 예수님의 임하심이 곧, 세상의 끝이 될 것이라고 이해하고 있는 것입니다. 왜 그럴까요? 아마도 이들이 생각했던 주의 임하심과 세상 끝은 예수님께서 유대왕이 되셔서 로마를 무찌르고 유대 독립을 이루시는 것을 말하는 것이 아니었을까 싶습니다. 예수님께서는 이전에도 인자가 미래에 오리라는 말씀을 하신 적이 있습니다. 그리고 그 왕의 도래를 최후의 심판과 연결하셨었지요. 그래서 그들의 생각에는 예수님이 이끄시는 유대 독립 전쟁, 그 과정에서 성전이 무너지는 일이 있을 수 있겠지만, 그 독립전쟁의 승리야말로 그들이 바라마지않는 마지막 날의 심판이었을 것입니다.

[1. The disciples’ Confusion: When is the End?]

Why did the disciples ask these questions? In yesterday’s passage, Jesus had already declared that Jerusalem and its temple would be left desolate. He concluded by saying they would not see Him again until He returns. At first, they might have thought He was speaking symbolically to the religious leaders. But when He said the temple would be physically leveled to the ground, they realized, "This is real. Something big is brewing."

Their second question is particularly interesting: "What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?" The disciples placed these two events on the same timeline. To them, the "coming of the Lord" was the "end of the age."

Why? Most likely, they envisioned the "coming of the Lord" as Jesus becoming the King of the Jews, defeating Rome, and achieving Judean independence. Jesus had spoken before about the Son of Man coming in the future and linked that arrival with the final judgment. In their minds, a war for independence led by Jesus might involve the destruction of the temple, but the resulting victory would be the final "Judgment Day" they long awaited.

자, 예수님께서는 분명 그들이 묻는 의도를 알고 계셨을텐데도 참 두리뭉실하게 말씀하십니다. 오히려 우리야말로 유대 역사를 통해 서기66년에 로마에 반기를 든 유대독립전쟁이 일어나고 티투스 장군이 이끄는 로마군이 서기 70년에 예루살렘과 성전을 다 파괴 할 것을 알고 있습니다. 그렇다면 예수님께서 지금 이들에게 하시는 말씀은 앞으로 다가올 예루살렘 멸망을 이들로 하여금 대비하게 하시는 말씀인 것이지요. 그런데 예수님께서는 이들에게 미래를 구체적으로 말씀하시지 않으십니다. 또 그들의 오해 또한 바로 잡지 않으십니다. 오히려 그것을 역이용하셔서 그들이 이해할 수 있는 범위 안에서 세상 끝의 징조를 설명하십니다. 그리고 예수님이 설명하시는 세상의 끝이란 그들이 생각했던 ‘메시아의 로마 심판’ 이 아니라, 또 우리가 역사적으로 알고 있는 ‘예루살렘의 멸망’을 넘어서는 그 무엇이지요. 그래서 우리 또한 이 말씀을 통해 그 끝을 기다리게 되는 것입니다. 

[2. The Historical Reality and the Greater "End"]

Jesus knew exactly what they were thinking, yet His answer was somewhat broad. From our perspective in history, we know that in AD 66, the Jewish revolt against Rome began, and in AD 70, the Roman army led by General Titus utterly destroyed Jerusalem and the temple.

Jesus was preparing them for this coming destruction. However, He did not provide a specific date, nor did He immediately correct their misconceptions. Instead, He used their framework to explain the signs of the end of the age within a context they could grasp. The "End" Jesus describes goes beyond the Roman judgment of the Messiah or the historical fall of Jerusalem—it points to something much greater, an end that we, too, are still waiting for.

예수님은 많은 사람들이 스스로를 그리스도라 부를 것이라고 하십니다. 제자들이 이해한 대로라면, 그리스도는 이스라엘을 로마로부터 구원할 왕이지요. 스스로를 그 왕이라고 하면서 많은 사람들을 현혹하여 독립전쟁으로 향하게 할 것이니 그들을 따르지 말라고 말씀하시는 것입니다. 6절의 난리는 전쟁을 말합니다. 즉, 전쟁과 전쟁 소문이 들려올 것이고 실제로 전쟁이 있어야 하겠지만 그것이 끝이 아니다 라고 말씀하십니다. 그래서 두려워하지 말라고 말씀하십니다. 그 전쟁을 표현한 것이 7절입니다. 실제로 예루살렘은 포위되어 극심한 기근에 빠져야했고 성안에 있던 사람의 절반 가까이 되는 110만명이 사망했다고 하니 그 참혹함이 이루 말 할 수 없었을 것입니다. 그런데 예수님은 이것이 끝이 아니라고 하시면서 이들에게 두려워하지 말라고 말씀하십니다. 그 이유는 바로 그 다음절에 있습니다.

[3. The Signs: Deception and War]

Jesus warns that many will come claiming to be the Christ. To the disciples, "Christ" meant the one who would liberate Israel from Rome. Jesus warns them not to follow those who lure people into wars of independence under the guise of being the Savior.

In verse 6, He speaks of "wars and rumors of wars." He says these things must happen, but they are not yet the end. Therefore, He tells them, "See to it that you are not alarmed." Verse 7 describes these wars in more detail. Historically, the siege of Jerusalem was horrific; it is said that nearly 1.1 million people—nearly half the city's population—perished due to extreme famine and slaughter. Yet, Jesus says even this unspeakable tragedy is not the end, and He tells them not to fear. The reason is found in the next verse.

            8절입니다. 예수님께서는 이 모든 것이 산고의 시작이라고 말씀하십니다. 해산의 진통이라고 말이지요. 여러분 산고의 고통은 어떻습니까? 마치 통증이 파도처럼 밀려와서 미칠듯한 고통이 한동안 지속되다가 또 조금 지나면 괜찮아지지요. 통증이 밀려오는 주기가 점점 짧아지다가 출산을 할 때에 가장 극심한 산통을 겪게됩니다. 어머니가 그 고통을 견디는 이유는 단 하나. 바로 새생명이 이 세상에 태어나기 때문입니다. 이 고통은 너무나 견디기 힘든 것이지만 그 고통의 끝에는 기쁨이 있습니다. 그렇기에 견딜 수 있는 것이지요. 오늘 말씀에 있는 모든 환란에 대한 말씀이 바로 이 해산의 고통을 말하는 말씀들입니다. 그러나 13절에 뭐라고 말씀하십니까? “그러나 끝까지 견디는 자는 구원을 얻으리라” 이 해산의 고통을 끝까지 견디면 구원을 얻을 것이라 말씀하십니다. 그리고 더 놀라운 것은 우리가 그 구원을 얻을 때에 우리가 그 고통을 다시 기억하지 않을 것이라는 것입니다. 요한복음 16:21, “여자가 해산하게 되면 그 때가 이르렀으므로 근심하나 아기를 낳으면 세상에 사람 난 기쁨으로 말미암아 그 고통을 다시 기억하지 아니하느니라” 예수님께서는 해산의 고통을 끝까지 견디고 구원을 얻는 이것을 14절에서 천국 복음이라 말씀하십니다. 온 세상 사람들이 이 소식을 들을 때에 그제야 끝이 온다고 말씀하고 계시지요.

[4. The Labor Pains of a New Kingdom]

Verse 8 says: "All these are the beginning of birth pains." Jesus calls these tribulations "labor pains."

What are labor pains like? The pain comes in waves. It is an excruciating agony that lasts for a while, then subsides, only to return. As the time for delivery approaches, the intervals between the pains get shorter and the intensity reaches its peak.

A mother endures that agony for one reason: New life is being born into the world. The pain is nearly unbearable, but there is joy at the end of it. That is why she can endure. Every tribulation mentioned in today's text is described as these "birth pains."

Then, what does verse 13 say? "But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved." If you endure these birth pains to the end, you will receive salvation. What’s even more amazing is that when we receive that salvation, we will not even remember the pain. John 16:21 says: "A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world."

In verse 14, Jesus calls this endurance and the resulting salvation the "Gospel of the Kingdom." He says that when this news is preached to the whole world as a testimony to all nations, then the end will come.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 세상 끝의 징조를 묻는 제자들에게 예수님께서 말씀하시는 것은 이것들입니다. 미혹을 받지 않도록 주의하라. 전쟁이 일어나도 두려워하지 말라. 끝까지 견뎌라. 이 모든 것은 산고의 시작이다. 해산의 고통을 끝까지 견디는 자는 구원을 얻으리라. 이것이 바로 천국 복음이다. 이 복음을 온 세상에 전하라. 그제야 끝이 올 것이다. 우리에게도 해산의 고통과 같이 파도처럼 끊임없이 고통이 밀려올 때가 있습니다. 그러나 두려워 마십시오. 끝까지 견디는 자에게 구원과 기쁨이 있을 것입니다.

[Conclusion]

To the disciples asking for signs of the end, Jesus gave these instructions:

• Watch out that no one deceives you.

• Do not be afraid when wars break out.

• Endure to the end.

• Understand that all this is only the beginning of birth pains.

• The one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

This is the Gospel of the Kingdom. Let us preach this Gospel to the whole world, and only then will the end come.
