22:23 부활이 없다 하는 사두개인들이 그 날 예수께 와서 물어 이르되

22:24 선생님이여 모세가 일렀으되 사람이 만일 자식이 없이 죽으면 그 동생이 그 아내에게 장가 들어 형을 위하여 상속자를 세울지니라 하였나이다

22:25 우리 중에 칠 형제가 있었는데 맏이가 장가들었다가 죽어 상속자가 없으므로 그 아내를 그 동생에게 물려 주고

22:26 그 둘째와 셋째로 일곱째까지 그렇게 하다가

22:27 최후에 그 여자도 죽었나이다

22:28 그런즉 그들이 다 그를 취하였으니 부활 때에 일곱 중의 누구의 아내가 되리이까

[Marriage at the Resurrection]

23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”

22:29 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 너희가 성경도, 하나님의 능력도 알지 못하는고로 오해하였도다

22:30 부활 때에는 장가도 아니 가고 시집도 아니가고 하늘에 있는 천사들과 같으니라

29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

오늘 본문에 사두개인들이 등장합니다. 이들은 유대 종교의 당파 중 하나인 사두개파 사람들을 말합니다. 이름의 기원은 다윗 시대에 제사장이었던 사독으로부터 왔습니다. 이들은 부유한 귀족 지배 계층으로 제사장과 예루살렘의 권력가들로 이루어진 집단으로서 신학적, 정치적으로 많은 영향력을 끼쳤습니다. 이들의 큰 특징은 바로 부활, 영적 세계, 천사의 존재를 믿지 않았다는 것입니다. 이런 그들을 향해 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 성경도, 하나님의 능력도 알지 못하는 고로 오해하였도다(29)”. 우리는 성경을 바르게 해석하지 못하고 하나님의 능력을 믿지 못하면 하나님의 뜻을 오해하게 됩니다. 예수님을 함정에 빠뜨리기위해 찾아온 사두개인들이 예수님께 던진 질문은 사후 세계와 관련된 것이었습니다. 사두개인들이 가지고 있던 오해를 예수님께서 어떻게 푸시는지 살펴봅시다.

In today’s passage, the Sadducees appear. They were one of the religious factions within Judaism. Their name comes from Zadok, a priest from the time of King David. The Sadducees were a wealthy aristocratic ruling class, made up of priests and powerful figures in Jerusalem, and they held significant theological and political influence. One of their defining characteristics was that they did not believe in the resurrection, the spiritual world, or the existence of angels. To them Jesus said, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God” (v.29). When we fail to interpret Scripture correctly and do not believe in God’s power, we end up misunderstanding His will. The Sadducees came to trap Jesus, and the question they posed concerned the afterlife. Let us look at how Jesus addressed the misunderstanding they held.

1)    사두개인들의 오해

먼저 사두개인들은 부활이 성경에 근거를 두지 않기에 이성적으로 성립될 수 없다고 생각했습니다. 대신 이들은 모세의 말을 근거로 삼아 부활 신앙이 말이 되지 않음을 주장했습니다. 24절에 이들이 하는 말은 바로 신명기 25장 5-6절에 있는 말씀을 인용한 것입니다. 이 제도를 형사취수제 혹은 고엘 제도라고 부릅니다. 즉 한 사람이 자식을 낳지 못하고 죽었을 때, 그 동생이 그 형제의 아내를 자신의 아내로 받아들여 형을 대신하여 가문의 대를 이어주는 것입니다. 우리가 잘 알고있는 유다와 다말의 사건이 이 제도로부터 야기된 것이지요. 유다의 첫째 아들이 죽자 그의 아내 다말을 유다는 둘째 아들인 오난에게 주었는데 둘째 아들도 죽는 일이 벌어졌지요. 그래서 셋째 아들인 셀라까지 죽을까봐 두려워서 다말에게 주지 않았습니다. 그런데 오늘 사두개인들이 예시로 드는 상황은 이보다 더 심각합니다. ‘일곱 형제가 있었는데 그 맏이가 상속자 없이 죽었고 그의 아내가 둘째부터 시작해서 일곱째까지 다 차례차례 그 제도에 의해 거쳐가게 됐다고 가정한다고 할 때, 과연 마지막 부활했을 때 그 여자는 과연 누구의 아내가 됩니까’가 이들이 생각해낸 함정이었습니다. 이들의 질문에서 이들이 가지고 있던 생각의 한계를 알 수 있습니다. 이들은 부활이 이루어지는 사후세계는 현재 이 땅의 불안함 삶의 연장선이라고 생각했습니다. 그들은 지상의 굴레와 한계를 영원한 세계에까지 투영하려고 한 것입니다.

1)    The Sadducees’ Misunderstanding

First, the Sadducees believed that the resurrection could not be logically valid because it had no basis in Scripture. Instead, they used the words of Moses to argue that belief in the resurrection was unreasonable. In verse 24 they quote from Deuteronomy 25:5–6. This system is called the levirate marriage or the goel system. According to this custom, if a man died without having children, his brother was to take the widow as his wife and raise offspring in the name of the deceased brother so that the family line would continue. A well-known example of this is the story of Judah and Tamar. When Judah’s first son died, Tamar, his widow, was given to Judah’s second son, Onan. But the second son also died. Fearing that his third son, Shelah, might die as well, Judah did not give him to Tamar. However, the scenario the Sadducees presented was even more extreme. They imagined a case where seven brothers existed. The eldest died without leaving an heir, and his wife was successively married to each of the seven brothers according to the law. Their question was this: When the resurrection occurs, whose wife will the woman be? This was the trap they had devised. Through their question we see the limitation of their thinking. They assumed that the afterlife following the resurrection would simply be a continuation of the unstable life on earth. They were projecting earthly limitations and structures into the eternal world.

2)    예수님의 답변

예수님의 답변을 통해 우리는 이들이 가지고 있는 오해 두 가지를 알 수 있습니다. 먼저 이들은 성경을 오해했습니다. 구약 성경 중 모세오경만을 인정했던 이들은 말씀 속 하나님의 모든 계획과 나라에 대한 이해를 할 수 없었습니다. 이들은 영혼이 육체와 함께 소멸한다고 믿었기에 그 믿음을 고수하기 위해 다른 진리는 받아들이지 못하고 고집을 부리는 것입니다. 그래서 예수님은 이들에게 정확하게 알려줍니다. “부활 때에는 장가도 아니 가고 시집도 아니 가고 하늘에 있는 천사들과 같으니라(30절)” 즉 결혼을하고 자녀를 가지고 죽음을 맞이하는 일은 이 땅에서만 벌어지는 일입니다. 부활한 사람은 땅에서 살았던 사람과 같은 존재이지만, 부활 후 그 몸은 썩지 않는 몸으로 변화될 것입니다. 즉 부활 전과 후의 우리의 모습과 사는 방식에 있어서 연속성과 불연속성을 동시에 경험할 수 있게 됩니다.

다음으로 사두개인들은 하나님의 능력을 오해했습니다. 예수님은 31절에 말씀으로 그들에게 반박하십니다. “죽은 사람의 부활에 대해 말하자면 하나님께서 너희에게 하신 말씀을 읽어 보지 못했느냐?(31절)” 그리고는 출애굽기 3장 6절에 하나님께서 모세에게 하신 말씀을 인용하십니다. “ 나는 네 조상의 하나님이니 아브라함의 하나님, 이삭의 하나님, 야곱의 하나님이니라(출 3:6)” 이 말씀은 하나님이 조상들이나 후손들에게 약속하신 언약을 언급할 때 주로 사용되는 표현입니다. 하나님은 그들이 죽은 이후에도 그들과 맺은 언약을 기억하시기 때문입니다. 그리고 예수님은 “하나님은 죽은 자의 하나님이 아니요 살아 있는 자의 하나님이시니라(32b절)” 이라고 말씀하시며 하나님이 모세와 대화할 때 이미 아브하람, 이삭, 야곱은 죽은 상태이지만, 하나님께서 이들을 살려 지금 하늘에서 그들과 함께 계심을 알려주시고 계십니다. 이것은 오직 언약에 신실하신 하나님의 능력 안에 가능한 일입니다. 결국 부활 신앙은 하나님의 능력을 믿는 것입니다. 하나님과 자녀의 관계는 죽음으로 인해 사라지지 않습니다. 그러니 이 땅에서는 죽어서도 언약에 신실하신 하나님과 함께 언제나 살아서 교제한다는 것을 믿는 믿음입니다.

2) Jesus’ Answer

Through Jesus’ response we can see two misunderstandings held by the Sadducees. First, they misunderstood Scripture The Sadducees recognized only the Pentateuch (the five books of Moses) as authoritative. Because of this limited view of Scripture, they could not fully understand God’s plan and His kingdom. Since they believed that the soul perished with the body, they stubbornly rejected any truth that contradicted their belief. Jesus corrected them clearly: “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” (v.30) Marriage, having children, and facing death are realities that belong to life on this earth. Those who are resurrected will still be the same persons who lived on earth, but their bodies will be transformed into imperishable bodies. In other words, in the resurrection we will experience both continuity and discontinuity with our present life—there will be both similarity and transformation in how we exist.

Secondly, they misunderstood the power of God Jesus continues by challenging them in verse 31: “But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you?” (v.31) Then He quotes Exodus 3:6, where God speaks to Moses: “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” This phrase was often used when referring to the covenant God made with the patriarchs and their descendants. Even after their deaths, God still remembers the covenant He made with them. Jesus concludes: “He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” (v.32) When God spoke these words to Moses, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had already died. Yet God refers to Himself as their God, implying that they are alive before Him. God has raised them and they live with Him. This is possible only through the power of the faithful, covenant-keeping God. Ultimately, belief in the resurrection is belief in God’s power. The relationship between God and His children does not disappear because of death. Even after death, we continue to live and fellowship with the God who remains faithful to His covenant.

결국 예수님은 말씀으로 사두개인들의 오해를 정확히 지적했습니다. 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님께서는 우리가 하나님을 오해하여 넘어져 있을 때 절대 우리를 가만히 버려두시지 않습니다. 말씀을 통해서 예배를 통해서 계속 새로운 깨달음을 주시고 길을 인도하시는 분이십니다. 과거에 저는 하나님을 마치 나를 벌주기위해 내가 실수하기만을 기다리시는 무서운 하나님으로 오해했었습니다. 또 한때는 내가 물질을 드려야지만 나를 사랑해주시는 째째한 하나님으로 오해했었습니다. 이런 저를 하나님께서는 가만히 방치하지 않으시고 찾아와 말씀으로 알려주시고 회복시켜 주셨습니다. 여러분은 이런 경험 있으십니까? 아니면 지금 현재 하나님을 향해 가지고 있는 오해는 없으십니까? 우리의 왜곡된 경험과 시선으로 하나님의 뜻과 능력을 오해하지 않도록 기도합시다. 긍휼과 사랑이 넘치시는 하나님께서 우리를 만나주실 것입니다.

In the end, Jesus clearly pointed out the Sadducees’ misunderstanding through the Word. The God who loves us never leaves us alone when we fall because we misunderstand Him. Through His Word and through worship, He continually gives us new understanding and guides our path In the past, I misunderstood God as a frightening God who was waiting for me to make a mistake so that He could punish me. At another time, I thought of God as a petty God who would love me only if I offered Him material things. But God did not leave me in those misunderstandings. He came to me, spoke through His Word, and restored me. Have you ever had a similar experience? Or is there perhaps some misunderstanding about God that you are holding onto right now? Let us pray that we do not misunderstand God’s will and power through our distorted experiences or perspectives. The God who is full of mercy and love will surely meet us.
