23:26 눈 먼 바리새인이여 너는 먼저 안을 깨끗이 하라 그리하면 겉도 깨끗하리라

25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

23:27 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 회칠한 무덤 같으니 겉으로는 아름답게 보이나 그 안에는 죽은 사람의 뼈와 모든 더러운 것이 가득하도다

23:28 이와같이 너희도 겉으로는 사람에게 옳게 보이되 안으로는 외식과 불법이 가득하도다

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

23:29 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 너희는 선지자들의 무덤을 만들고 의인들의 비석을 꾸미며 이르되

23:30 만일 우리가 조상 때에 있었더라면 우리는 그들이 선지자의 피를 흘리는데 참여하지 아니하였으리라 하니

29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!

23:33 뱀들아 독사의 새끼들아 너희가 어떻게 지옥의 판결을 피하겠느냐

23:34 그러므로 내가 너희에게 선지자들과 지혜 있는 자들과 서기관들을 보내매 너희가 그 중에서 더러는 죽이거나 십자가에 못 박고 그 중에서 더러는 너희 회당에서 채찍질하고 이 동네에서 저 동네로 따라다니며 박해하리라

23:35 그러므로 의인 아벨의 피로부터 성전과 제단 사이에서 너희가 죽인 바라갸의 아들 사가랴의 피까지 땅 위에서 흘린 의로운 피가 다 너희에게 돌아가리라

23:36 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 이것이 다 이 세대에게 돌아가리라

33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.

23:37 예루살렘아 예루살렘아 선지자들을 죽이고 네게 파송된 자들을 돌로 치는 자여 암탉이 그 새끼를 날개 아래에 모음같이 내가 네 자녀를 모으려 한 일이 몇 번이더냐 그러나 너희가 원하지 아니하였도다

23:38 보라 너희 집이 황폐하여 버려진 바 되리라

23:39 내가 너희에게 이르노니 이제부터 너희는 찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이여 할 때까지 나를 보지 못하리라 하시니라

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

                예루살렘 성으로 들어오신 예수님의 행보는 이렇습니다. 성전을 깨끗케 하셨습니다. 성전에서 종교지도자들에게 비유로 말씀하시고 그들과 논쟁하셨습니다. 그리고 일곱가지 재앙을 이들에게 선포하십니다. 오늘의 말씀은 그 일곱가지 재앙의 후반부를 다루고 있습니다. 제가 굳이 전체적인 맥락을 말씀드리는 것은 이 종교지도자들의 위선이 그들을 향한 심판만으로 끝나지 않기 때문입니다. 예수님은 탄식하십니다. 이스라엘 전체, 즉 예루살렘과 성전이 모두 버림받게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 그렇기 때문에 예수님께서는 예루살렘에 들어오시고부터 계속 이들에게 말씀하시는 것입니다. 오늘은 “믿는 자의 위선이 불러오는 참상”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

                [Introduction: The Context of the Seven Woes]

Jesus’ journey after entering Jerusalem has been intense: He cleansed the Temple, confronted the religious leaders with parables, and engaged them in debate. Now, He declares seven woes upon them. Today’s passage covers the latter half of those seven woes.

I want to emphasize the overall context because the hypocrisy of these religious leaders does not end merely with a judgment against them individually. Jesus laments because all of Israel—Jerusalem and the Temple itself—will be abandoned. This is why Jesus has been speaking to them persistently since He entered the city. Today, I want to share a message titled: "The Tragedy Brought by the Hypocrisy of Believers."

                다섯번째 화와 여섯번째 화는 이들이 겉과 속이 다른 문제를 비판하십니다. 그들은 일상생활에서 마시고 먹을 때에 제의적 정결을 위해 잔과 그릇을 깨끗이 하는 것에 대단한 관심을 보였습니다. 또 무덤에 회를 칠하였던 이유는 사람들이 무덤인 줄 모르고 접촉하게 되면 제의적으로 부정해지기 때문에 그런 일을 방지하기 위해서였지요. 그러나 어느 순간부터 이들은 하나님께서 주신 정결법의 핵심, 즉 마음의 정결을 추구하는 것이 아니라 그 ‘정결법을 잘 지키는 나’에 대해 관심을 두기 시작한 것입니다. 그래서 정작 그들의 내면은 탐욕과 방탐함, 그리고 위선과 불법으로 가득차 있음에도 그들은 겉으로 보여지는 모습이 더욱 깨끗하고 아름다운 것에 집착하게 된 것입니다. 28절 “겉으로는 사람에게 옳게 보인다,” 아무리 내면이 썩어 있어도 겉으로는 사람들에게 옳게 보일 수 있도록 꾸밀 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 마음의 중심을 보십니다. 그래서 오늘 예수님께서는 이들에게 “화 있을진저”라고 경고하고 계시는 것입니다.

[1. Whitewashed Tombs: The Illusion of Purity]

The fifth and sixth woes criticize the disconnect between their inner and outer lives. In daily life, they were obsessed with ceremonial cleansing—washing cups and plates to remain ritually pure. They whitewashed tombs so that people wouldn't accidentally touch them and become "unclean."

But at some point, they lost the core of the purity laws given by God. Instead of seeking purity of heart, they began to focus on the "self" who keeps the law so well. Consequently, while their inner selves were full of greed, self-indulgence, hypocrisy, and lawlessness, they became obsessed with making their outer appearance look clean and beautiful. As verse 28 says, "On the outside you appear to people as righteous." No matter how rotten the inside is, one can always decorate the outside to look right to others. But God looks at the heart. This is why Jesus warns them so sternly: "Woe to you."

                일곱번째 화에서 예수님의 경고는 극에 달합니다. 당시에 이들은 옛 영웅들을 기념하기 위해 대규모의 비석을 세우는 작업을 진행했습니다. 그들은 그렇게 선지자들과 신앙의 영웅들을 기리는 것으로 자신들은 조상들과는 다르다는 것을 보여주려 한 것이지요. ‘우리가 그 시절에 살았더라면 우리는 선지자들을 죽이는 데에 가담하지 않았을 것이다’ 라는 것을 표현하는 것입니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 말씀하십니다. 너희가 그들의 자손임을 스스로 증거하니 너희 조상의 분량을 채워라. 이 말씀은 ‘조상들이 다 이루지 못한 악한 행위를 너희들이 다 이루어라,’ ‘너희가 조상 때부터 내려온 하나님의 진노의 분량을 다 채워서 반드시 심판을 받아라’ 는 말씀이지요. 이들이 지옥의 판결을 피할 수 없을 만큼 그 죄악이 큼을 보여주고 계신 것입니다.

                왜 그렇습니까? 그들이 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 핍박하고 죽일 것이기 때문입니다. 그것이 이들의 조상 세대가 했던 일을 그대로 반복하는 일이 될 것이기 때문입니다. 실제로 초대교회는 이방인들이 아니라 유대인들에게서 가장 심한 핍박을 받았습니다. 바울이 되기 전 사울이 바로 그 박해의 좋은 예가 아니겠습니까? 오죽하면 예수님께서 사울에게 나타나셔서 하셨던 첫 말씀이 “사울아 사울아 네가 어찌하여 나를 박해하느냐” 였지요. 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “의인 아벨의 피로부터 … 사가랴의 피까지… 땅 위에서 흘린 의로운 피가 다 너희에게 흘러갈 것이다.” 아벨은 구약에서 가장 먼저 순교 당한 사람이지요. 사가랴는 히브리 구약의 순서에 따르면 가장 마지막에 순교하는 사람입니다. 이것은 무엇을 말하는 것입니까? 구약 전체, 아니 이들에게는 성경전체의 역사 가운데 쏟아진 ‘모든 의인의 피’에 대한 책임을 이들에게 물으시겠다는 것입니다. 여러분 이들이 예수님을 십자가에 못박으라 할 때에 이들이 했던 말이 무엇인지 아십니까? 27:25, “백성이 다 대답하여 이르되 그 피를 우리와 우리 자손에게 돌릴지어다” 그들이 외쳤던 대로 예수님께서는 “그 피가 다 이 세대에게 흘러가리라” 라고 말씀하십니다.

[2. Filling Up the Measure of Guilt]

In the seventh woe, Jesus’ warning reaches its peak. At that time, people were building massive monuments to commemorate ancient heroes and prophets. By honoring these men of faith, they tried to show that they were different from their ancestors. They claimed, "If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets."

But Jesus says: "You testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Go ahead, then, and finish what your ancestors started!" (v. 31-32). This is a chilling command. He is saying, "Fill up the measure of the wrath of God that has been descending since your ancestors' time, so that judgment may finally come." He is showing that their sin is so great they cannot escape being condemned to hell.

Why? Because they would go on to persecute and kill those who follow Jesus, repeating exactly what their ancestors did. In fact, the early church faced its most severe persecution not from Gentiles, but from fellow Jews. Saul (before he became Paul) is a prime example. The first thing Jesus said to him was, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" Jesus declares that the responsibility for all the righteous blood shed on earth—from the blood of righteous Abel (the first martyr in the OT) to the blood of Zechariah (the last martyr according to the Hebrew order of the OT)—will fall on them. Do you remember what the people cried out when they demanded Jesus be crucified? "His blood be on us and on our children!" (Mt 27:25). Just as they cried out, Jesus says, "All this will come on this generation."

                그렇다면 이것이 예수님께서 원하시는 것이었을까요? 아닙니다. 예수님께서 이들에 대한 심판을 원하셨다면 예루살렘 성에 입성하시고 부터 굳이 성전에서 이들을 대적하시고 이들에게 비유로 가르치시고 지금처럼 이들에게 경고하실 이유가 없지요. 예수님은 오히려 탄식하십니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 그들의 위선과 죄악으로 인해 예루살렘과 성전이 버림받게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 이들의 죄악이 유대 전체를 멸망하게 만들 것이기 때문입니다. 예수님은 탄식하십니다. “암탉이 그 새끼를 날개 아래에 모음같이 내가 네 자녀를 모으려 한 일이 몇 번이더냐” 이것이 예수님의 마음이시지요. 예수님은 이들을 살리기 원하셨던 것입니다. 그래서 예수님은 궁극적으로 이들을 살리기 위해 당신의 죽음을 아심에도 예루살렘 성으로 들어오신 것이지요. 그러나 오늘 말씀은 이렇게 말합니다. “그러나 너희가 원하지 아니하였도다.” 예수님은 이들을 살리기 원하셨으나 탐욕과 방탕, 위선과 불법이 가득하였던 이들은 예수님 구원을 원하지 않았습니다. 그 결과가 무엇입니까? 종교 지도자들만 심판 받은 것이 아니라 그들의 성전이 파괴되고 예루살렘과 유다 백성 전체가 멸망하게 되는 것입니다.

[3. The Heart of the Lamenter: A Hen and Her Chicks]

Was this judgment what Jesus truly wanted? No. If He simply wanted them destroyed, He wouldn't have bothered entering Jerusalem, cleansing the Temple, teaching them in parables, or giving them these warnings.

Instead, Jesus laments. He grieves because their hypocrisy and sin will cause Jerusalem and the Temple to be forsaken. Their sin will lead to the destruction of all Judea. Jesus cries out: "How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings..." (v. 37). This is the heart of Jesus. He wanted to save them. He entered Jerusalem knowing He would die, ultimately to give them life.

But the text says: "But you were not willing." Jesus wanted to save them, but those full of greed, hypocrisy, and lawlessness did not want His salvation. The result? Not only were the leaders judged, but the Temple was destroyed, and Jerusalem and the people of Judah fell into ruin.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 우리는 이 말씀을 그저 예수님 시대에 있었던 종교지도자들의 위선에 대한 심판이라고만 봐서는 안 될 것입니다. 이 말씀을 우리에게 주신 것은 우리 믿는자들로 하여금 우리의 위선에 대한 심판의 분량이 차오르고 있다는 것을 알려주시는 것입니다. 그리고 그 분량이 차면 우리만이 아니라 우리의 가정과 교회와 사회 전체가 그 심판 가운데 있을 것이라는 것입니다. 실로 무서운 경고가 아닐 수 없습니다. 그래서 우리는 돌아보아야 합니다. 우리는 “회개하라 천국이 가까웠느니라” 는 예수님의 부르심을 원하지 않았던 것은 아닌지. 듣고도 모른척하지는 않은지. 알고도 실천하려하지 않았던 것은 아닌지. 다시 한번 돌아보기 원합니다. 그래서 마치 암탉이 그 새끼를 날개 아래에 모으시는 것 같은 예수님의 부르심을 듣고 우리의 길을 돌이켜 예수님의 날개 그늘 가운데로 나아가기 원합니다. 이것이 우리 자신을 살리는 것 뿐만이 아니라 우리의 가정과 교회와 사회 전체를 살리는 것임을 기억하기 원합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

[Conclusion: A Warning for Us Today]

We must not view this simply as a historical judgment against religious leaders of the past. This word is given to us to warn us that the "measure of judgment" for our own hypocrisy may be filling up. When that measure is full, the consequences will affect not just us, but our homes, our churches, and our entire society.

This is a terrifying warning. We must look at ourselves. Have we been unwilling to hear Jesus’ call to "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"? Have we heard it but ignored it? Have we known the truth but refused to act?

Let us turn back. Let us hear the call of Jesus, who seeks to gather us like a hen gathers her chicks, and let us run into the shadow of His wings. Remember, this is not only about saving ourselves—it is about saving our families, our churches, and our world.
