[The Parable of the Tenants]

33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.

21:35 농부들이 종들을 잡아 하나는 심히 때리고 하나는 죽이고 하나는 돌로 쳤거늘

21:36 다시 다른 종들을 처음보다 많이 보내니 그들에게도 그렇게 하였는지라

21:37 후에 자기 아들을 보내며 이르되 그들이 내 아들은 존대하리라 하였더니

35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.

21:38 농부들이 그 아들을 보고 서로 말하되 이는 상속자니 자 죽이고 그의 유산을 차지하자 하고

21:39 이에 잡아 포도원 밖에 내쫓아 죽였느니라

38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

21:40 그러면 포도원 주인이 올 때에 그 농부들을 어떻게 하겠느냐

40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

21:41 그들이 말하되 그 악한 자들을 진멸하고 포도원은 제 때에 열매를 바칠 만한 다른 농부들에게 세로 줄지니이다

41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

21:42 예수께서 이르시되 너희가 성경에 건축자들의 버린 돌이 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었나니 이것은 주로 말미암아 된 것이요 우리 눈에 기이하도다 함을 읽어 본 일이 없느냐

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

“‘The stone the builders rejected

    has become the cornerstone;

the Lord has done this,

    and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

21:43 그러므로 내가 너희에게 이르노니 하나님의 나라를 너희는 빼앗기고 그 나라의 열매 맺는 백성이 받으리라

21:44 이 돌 위에 떨어지는 자는 깨지겠고 이 돌이 사람 위에 떨어지면 그를 가루로 만들어 흩으리라 하시니

43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”

21:45 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 예수의 비유를 듣고 자기들을 가리켜 말씀하심인 줄 알고

21:46 잡고자 하나 무리를 무서워하니 이는 그들이 예수를 선지자로 앎이었더라

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.

            어제 말씀에서 예수님께서는 종교지도자들에게 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 자들이야말로 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 자라는 말씀을 하셨습니다. 그리고 그들은 세례 요한의 가르침에도 끝까지 뉘우치지 않고 믿지 아니하였다고 말씀하시지요. 그러면서 다른 한 비유를 드시는 것이 바로 오늘의 말씀입니다. 이 비유를 통해 예수님께서는 이들이 마땅히 주인에게 바쳐야하는 열매를 맺지 않고 자신이 주인이 되려고 한 악한 청지기들임을 드러내시지요. 오늘은 이들의 모습을 반면교사 삼아 “선한 청지기 되어 열매 맺으라”는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

In yesterday’s message, Jesus told the religious leaders that those who actually do the will of God are the ones who enter His kingdom. He pointed out that despite John the Baptist’s teachings, they refused to repent or believe. Today’s passage follows that with another parable. Through this story, Jesus exposes them as wicked stewards—tenants who refused to give the Master His rightful fruit and instead tried to become the masters themselves. Today, let’s learn from their failure with a message titled: “Become Good Stewards and Bear Fruit.”

            오늘 말씀은 유대의 종교지도자들을 겨냥하여 예수님이 전하신 세가지 비유 중 그 두번째 비유입니다. 내용은 무엇입니까? 한 지주가 자신의 땅에 정성껏 포도원을 만들었습니다. 외적의 침입을 방지하는 울타리와 망대를 만들고 포도 착즙기도 만들었습니다. 이제 포도원이 좋은 열매를 맺는 일만 기다리면 되지요. 그러나 소출을 거두려면 레위기의 규정에 따르면 적어도 5년 정도는 기다려야 했기 때문에 자신이 관리하지 않고 소작농들에게 세를 주고 먼 곳으로 떠났습니다. 이런 일들은 당시에 흔하게 일어났던 일이기 때문에 이들은 이 비유가 매우 친숙했을 것입니다.

자, 이제 열매를 거둘 때가 되어서 주인이 그 열매를 받으려고 종들을 보냅니다. 여기를 주목해 보시면 우리는 주인이 구하는 것이 무엇인지를 알 수 있습니다. 바로 열매이지요. 이것은 주인의 당연한 권리입니다. 포도원은 주인의 것이고 이 포도원에서 일하고 있는 농부들은 단지 그 포도원을 관리하는 자들이기 때문입니다. 그러나 농부들은 주인에게 마땅히 드려야 할 열매를 주기는 커녕 주인의 종들을 죽이고 큰 상해를 입힙니다. 이것은 있을 수 없는 일이고 있어서도 안되는 일이지요. 그런데 주인이 놀랍게도 이들을 처벌하지 않고 “다시” 다른 종들을 보냅니다.  그런데도 그들은 같은 일을 반복하고 맙니다. 이제 주인은 이들에게 마지막 기회를 줍니다. 자신의 아들을 자기 대신 보낸 것이지요. 그러나 주인의 아들을 보고 이들은 이렇게 말합니다. “이는 상속자니 자 죽이고 그의 유산을 차지하자” 무슨 말입니까? 자신들이 이 포도원의 주인이 되겠다는 것입니다. 그리고 이것이야말로 이들이 주인의 종들과 아들을 죽인 동기가 무엇이었는지 보여주는 것이지요. 이들은 주인의 재산을 지키는 청지기였음에도 불구하고 마치 자신들이 주인인 것 처럼 행동한 것입니다. 하나님께서는 이들 종교지도자들에게 이스라엘이라는 포도원을 맡기셨습니다. 그들이 해야 할 일은 이스라엘이 좋은 열매를 맺을 수 있도록 관리하는 청지기 되는 것이었습니다. 그러나 그들은 오히려 이스라엘의 주인이 되어 하나님의 선지자들을 핍박하고 마지막 선지자였던 세례 요한 뿐만 아니라 하나님의 아들이신 예수님 마저 죽이게 되고 맙니다.

1. The Sin of the Tenants: Forgetting the Owner

This is the second of three parables Jesus told targeting the religious leaders. In the story, a landowner meticulously plants a vineyard. He puts a fence around it, digs a winepress, and builds a watchtower to protect it from intruders. He prepares everything for a successful harvest.

According to the laws in Leviticus, a landowner had to wait about five years before eating the fruit. So, he leased the vineyard to tenants and went on a journey. This was a common arrangement at the time, so the listeners would have found this story very familiar.

When the harvest time approached, the Master sent his servants to collect his fruit. Notice what the Master seeks: the fruit. This is his absolute right. The vineyard belongs to him; the tenants are merely those who manage it. However, instead of giving the fruit, the tenants beat and killed the servants.

Amazingly, the Master does not punish them immediately. He sends other servants “again.” Yet, the tenants repeat their violence. Finally, the Master gives them one last chance by sending his own son. But look at their response in verse 38: "This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance."

Their motive is revealed: they wanted to be the owners. Even though they were merely stewards, they acted as if the vineyard was theirs. God entrusted the vineyard of Israel to these religious leaders. Their job was to manage it so it would produce good fruit. Instead, they acted like owners, persecuting the prophets and John the Baptist, and eventually killing God’s own Son, Jesus. 

            그렇다면 이들에게 마땅한 처벌은 무엇입니까? 예수님께서는 그 처벌을 무엇인지 말씀해주시는 대신 비유를 듣고 있는 종교지도자들에게 물으십니다. “그러면 포도원 주인이 … 어떻게 하겠느냐?” 그러자 그들이 대답하지요 “그 악한자들을 ‘처참하게’ 진멸하고 포도원은 제때에 열매를 바칠 만한 다른 농부들에게 세로 줄지니이다.” 그들은 이 비유의 악한 청지기가 자신들인줄을 아직도 깨닫지 못하고 있지요. 그리고는 자신의 입으로 자신들에게 미칠 심판을 말하게 되었습니다. 그때에 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. 그 농부들이 너희다. “하나님의 나라를 너희는 빼앗기고 그 나라의 열매 맺는 백성이 받으리라” 그 때 대제사장들과 바리새인들은 예수님께서 자신들을 가리켜 말씀하시는 것인 줄을 알아차렸습니다. 어제의 두 아들의 비유와 오늘 포도원 청지기의 비유 모두가 자신들을 향한 말씀이었지요. 하지만 말씀을 깨달아 알았음에도 불구하고 그들은 예수님께 회개하지 아니하고 오히려 예수님을 잡고자 합니다. 그들은 하나님의 아들이신 예수님을 두려워하는 것이 아니라 사람을 두려워합니다. 이들은 말씀을 듣고 깨달아도 열매를 맺지 못하는 것입니다. 하나님의 나라는 열매 맺는 백성이 받는 것이라고 말씀하고 계시는데도 말이지요.

2. The Verdict: Self-Condemnation

Instead of announcing the punishment Himself, Jesus asks the religious leaders a question: "When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" (v. 40).

Still not realizing that the "wicked tenants" were themselves, they answered: "He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." By their own mouths, they pronounced their own judgment.

Then Jesus reveals the truth: You are those tenants. He declares, "The kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits." At that moment, the chief priests and Pharisees realized Jesus was talking about them. Both the parable of the two sons (from yesterday) and this parable of the tenants were mirrors reflecting their own hearts.

However, even after realizing this, they did not repent. Instead, they looked for a way to arrest Him. They did not fear the Son of God; they only feared the crowds. Even when they understood the Word, they failed to produce fruit.

            마태복음 3장에서 세례요한이 천국을 전파할 때에 많은 종교지도자들이 세례 베푸는 데로 왔습니다. 세례요한은 그들에게 이렇게 말합니다. “누가 너희를 가르쳐 임박한 진노를 피하라 하더냐” 무슨 말입니까? 이들은 세례라는 종교의식에 사로잡혀 있습니다. 그런 그들에게 세례요한은 말합니다. ”그러므로 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺고 속으로 아브라함이 우리 조상이라고 생각하지 말라… 좋은 열매를 맺지 아니하는 나무마다 찍혀 불에 던져지리라” 세례 요한과 예수님이 말씀하시는 것은 동일합니다. 예수님의 가르침을 듣고 돌이켜, 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺으라는 것입니다. 그 열매란 예수님의 가르침을 듣고 깨닫는 것에 머무르는 것이 아니라 그 가르침을 행동으로 옮기는 것을 말합니다. 오늘 말씀의 종교지도자들도 예수님의 말씀이 자신들을 향한 것임을 깨닫지 않았습니까? 그러나 그들은 자신들이 주인이 되고자 하였기에 예수님의 말씀을 깨닫고도 회개할 수 없었습니다.

3. The Definition of Fruit: Action, Not Ritual

In Matthew chapter 3, when John the Baptist was preaching, many religious leaders came to his baptism. John rebuked them, saying, "Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" They were obsessed with the religious ritual of baptism, but John told them: "Bear fruit in keeping with repentance." He warned that every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

The message of John the Baptist and Jesus is the same: Turn back and bear fruit worthy of repentance. "Fruit" is not just understanding a teaching or feeling a certain way; it is putting that teaching into action. The religious leaders in today’s text understood the message, but because they refused to give up their "ownership," they could not repent.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 포도원의 주인이 청지기에게 구하는 것은 그 열매입니다. 그러나 그들이 스스로 주인이 되려 할 때에 포도원 주인이 구하는 것이 열매인 줄 알면서도 그 종과 아들을 해치는 것을 보았습니다. 우리는 선한 청지기가 되어야 합니다. 먼저는 우리에게 맡기신 포도원이 우리의 것이 아니고 주인의 것임을 항상 잊지 말아야 합니다. 우리에게 열매를 구하실 때에 우리는 선한 청지기 되어 그 열매를 기꺼이 드릴 수 있어야 합니다. 여러분, 선한 청지기 되어 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀을 온전히 행하시는 열매를 맺어 주인을 기쁘게 하시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Conclusion]

What a vineyard owner seeks from a steward is the fruit. When we try to become our own masters, we end up harming the Master’s servants and His Son, even while knowing what the Master expects.

We must be good stewards. First, we must never forget that the vineyard entrusted to us—our lives, our ministries, our families—is not ours; it belongs to the Master. When He asks us for fruit, we must be ready to give it joyfully.

I pray in the name of the Lord that you would be good stewards who not only hear the Word but fully act upon it, bringing joy to our Master with the fruit of your lives.
