18:1 그 때에 제자들이 예수께 나아와 이르되 천국에서는 누가 크니이까

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

18:2 예수께서 한 어린 아이를 불러 그들 가운데 세우시고

18:3 이르시되 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 돌이켜 어린 아이들과 같이 되지 아니하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라

18:4 그러므로 누구든지 이 어린 아이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 천국에서 큰 자니라

18:5 또 누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린 아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이니

2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

18:6 누구든지 나를 믿는 이 작은 자 중 하나를 실족하게 하면 차라리 연자 맷돌이 그 목에 달려서 깊은 바다에 빠뜨려지는 것이 나으리라

18:7 실족하게 하는 일들이 있음으로 말미암아 세상에 화가 있도다 실족하게 하는 일이 없을 수는 없으나 실족하게 하는 그 사람에게는 화가 있도다

18:8 만일 네 손이나 네 발이 너를 범죄하게 하거든 찍어 내버리라 장애인이나 다리 저는 자로 영생에 들어가는 것이 두 손과 두 발을 가지고 영원한 불에 던져지는 것보다 나으니라

18:9 만일 네 눈이 너를 범죄하게 하거든 빼어 내버리라 한 눈으로 영생에 들어가는 것이 두 눈을 가지고 지옥 불에 던져지는 것보다 나으니라

[Causing to Stumble]

6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

                어제 자신들이 하나님의 자녀들이라는 기분 좋은 말을 들은 제자들은 오늘 예수님께 나아와 누가 하늘나라에서 가장 큰 자인지를 묻습니다. 제자들은 하늘 나라를 예수님께서 로마로부터 이스라엘의 주권을 회복하시고 예루살렘의 왕으로 등극하는 메시아의 나라라고 생각했을 것입니다. 그렇다면 자신들도 개국공신으로 한 자리씩을 차지하게 될텐데 그 때에 누가 총리 대신이 될지 묻고 있는 것이지요. 예수님께서는 이들의 질문에 어린아이 하나를 예를 드시며 대답하십니다. 오늘은 “작은자 되어 작은자를 영접하라”는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

Yesterday, the disciples heard the wonderful news that they are children of God. Perhaps still basking in that joy, they come to Jesus today with a question: "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" (v. 1).

The disciples likely imagined the kingdom of heaven as a political one—a kingdom where Jesus would reclaim Israel’s sovereignty from Rome and ascend the throne in Jerusalem. If that were the case, they expected to be the founding members of this new government. So, they are essentially asking, "Which one of us will be the Prime Minister?" To their question, Jesus answers by placing a child in their midst. Today, I want to share a message titled: "Become a Little One to Welcome the Little Ones."

                자, 아직 사춘기도 이르지 않은 어린 아이를 이들 가운데 불러 세우신 이유가 무엇이었을까요? 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. “진실로… 너희가 돌이켜 어린아이들과 같이 되지 아니하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라.” 가장 큰 자를 묻는 제자들에게 예수님께서는 먼저 천국에 들어가는 자격을 말씀하십니다. 이는 가장 큰 자가 중요한 것이 아니라 일단 천국에 들어가는 것이 더 중요하다는 말씀이지요. 그런데 그 자격이 어린아이들과 같이 되는 것이라고 하십니다. 자 이게 무슨 뜻일까요? 어린아이처럼 순진해야 한다? 어린아이처럼 티없이 맑고 깨끗해야한다? 여러분 어린아이는 어른에게 의존해야 생존할 수 있습니다. 즉 구원이란 전적으로 하나님께 의존하는 것이라는 것이지요. 하나님께 전적으로 의존하는 사람들만이 어른을 전적으로 의존하는 어린아이와 같이 천국에 들어갈 수 있다고 말씀하고 계시는 것입니다.

[1. The Qualification: Total Dependency]

Why did Jesus call a child—one who hadn't even reached puberty—to stand among them? Jesus says:

"Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (v. 3)

To the disciples asking about who is the "greatest," Jesus first addresses the "qualification" for entry. He is saying that being the greatest isn't the priority; the more urgent matter is simply getting in. And He says the requirement is to become like a child.

What does this mean? Does it mean being innocent or pure-hearted? While those are virtues, the core characteristic of a child is dependency. A child must depend entirely on an adult to survive. In other words, Jesus is teaching that salvation is about total dependency on God. Only those who depend on God as completely as a child depends on a parent can enter the kingdom of heaven.

                그러면서 이렇게 말씀하시지요. 그러므로, 그러므로, 어린아이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 천국에서 큰 자다. 제자들은 하늘나라에서 가장 큰 자가 누구인지 물었는데 예수님께서는 어린아이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 큰 자라고 대답하십니다. 당시의 어린아이는 사회에서 가장 낮은 위치에 있었지요. 심지어 여기서 이 어린아이라고 하는 단어는 중성 명사입니다. 그러니까 모든 사회 구성원 중에 가장 낮은 취급을 받았던 여자 어린아이일 수도 있었던 것입니다. 즉 예수님께서 말씀하시는 어린아이와 같이 되는 것은 위로는 하나님께 전적으로 의존하는 것을 말하고 옆으로는 낮아진 태도로 다른 사람들을 섬기는 것을 말하는 것입니다. 하나님의 전적인 은혜로 구원을 얻었다고 하면서 자신을 낮추지 못하는 사람들은 은혜를 모르는 사람인 것이지요. 이 내용을 설명하는 것이 5절부터 말씀하시는 내용입니다.

[2. The Definition of Greatness: Lowering Oneself]

Jesus continues: "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (v. 4). The disciples asked who is the greatest, and Jesus answers that it is the one who lowers himself.

In that society, children held the lowest possible status. Interestingly, the Greek word for "child" used here is a neuter noun. This suggests the child could have been a young girl—someone who occupied the very bottom of the social hierarchy.

Therefore, becoming like a child means two things: vertically, it is total dependency on God; and horizontally, it is serving others from a position of humility. Those who claim to be saved by God's total grace but refuse to humble themselves do not truly understand what grace is. This leads into Jesus' explanation starting in verse 5.

                예수님께서 “또” 라고 말씀하시면서 부연설명을 하십니다. 무엇입니까? 이런 어린아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이니. 여러분 앞에서 ‘너희가 이 어린아이과 같이 자기를 낮추어라’ 말씀하지 않으셨습니까? 그렇다면 제자된 자들은 다 이 어린아이 하나와 같은 사람들이지요. 그렇다면 여기서 어린아이 하나를 영접한다는 것은 이 어린아이 같이 낮은 자를 영접하라는 말씀도 있지만 또한 마치 어린아이처럼 낮아진 너의 형제와 지체를 영접하라는 말씀이 아니겠습니까? 곧 너희는 작은 자 되어라, 그리고 작은 자된 너의 형제를 또한 영접하라는 말씀인 것이지요.

[3. Receiving the Little Ones]

Jesus adds a further explanation: "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me" (v. 5).

Think about this. Didn't Jesus just say, "You must humble yourselves like this child"? This means that all true disciples are, in fact, "children" in this sense. Therefore, "receiving one such child" means welcoming those who are lowly, but it also means receiving your brothers and sisters who have humbled themselves like children. In short: Become a little one yourself, and then welcome your brothers and sisters as little ones.

                그래서일까요? 예수님께서는 6절에 이렇게 경고하십니다. “나를 믿는 이 작은 자 중 하나를 실족하게 하면” 여기서 작은 자가 누구입니까? 예수님을 믿는 사람들입니다. 너의 형제, 또 지체라는 말씀이지요. 그런데 그들을 영접하지 아니하고 실족하게 하면 그 죄가 심히 크다고 말씀하십니다. 7절에서 이를 설명하시지요. “실족하게 하는 일들이 있음으로 말미암아 세상에 화가 있도다.” 우리가 형제를 실족하게 하는 것이 단순히 한 개인을 넘어지게 하는 것이 아니라 세상 전체에 화를 끼친다는 것입니다. 실족하게 하는 일. 그 일로 말미암아 세상에 화가 있는 것이지요. 즉 이 세상에 화가 있는 것은 바로 우리가 서로를 실족하게 하기 때문이라는 것입니다.

그러나 의인은 없으되 하나도 없지요. 죄인인 우리는 서로를 실족하게 할 수 밖에 없을 것입니다. 예수님도 이를 말씀하십니다. “실족하게 하는 일이 없을 수는 없으나” 하지만 그렇다고 하더라도 실족하게 하는 사람이 그 책임을 피할 수는 없음을 또한 말씀하십니다. “실족하게 하는 그 사람에게는 화가 있도다” 어떤 화일까요? 우리는 6절에서 그 화가 얼마나 큰 화인지를 보았습니다. 7절에서 그 뜻을 설명하셨고 8-9절에서 두 번 반복해서 다시 한 번 그 화가 얼마나 큰지를 말씀하십니다. 이는 예수님께서 지체를 실족하게 하는 사람에게 미치는 화가 어떤 것인지를 확실히 못박으신 것이지요.

[4. The Grave Warning: Causing Others to Stumble]

Perhaps this is why Jesus gives such a stern warning in verse 6: "But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin..." Who are these "little ones"? They are believers—your brothers, your sisters, your fellow members of the body of Christ. Jesus warns that if we fail to welcome them and instead cause them to stumble, the sin is incredibly grave.

He explains this in verse 7: "Woe to the world for temptations to sin!" When we cause a brother or sister to stumble, it isn't just a personal matter; it brings "woe" to the entire world. The reason there is so much woe in this world is because we are constantly causing one another to stumble.

Now, we know that "none is righteous, no, not one." As sinners, we will inevitably cause others to stumble at times. Jesus acknowledges this: "For it is necessary that temptations come." However, that does not absolve the person of their responsibility: "But woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!"

How great is this woe? We saw the magnitude of it in verse 6 (the millstone), and Jesus emphasizes it again twice in verses 8 and 9 using the metaphors of cutting off a hand or plucking out an eye. Jesus is firmly "nailing down" the reality of the judgment that falls on those who cause His "little ones" to stumble.

말씀을 맺습니다. 세상은 큰 사람이 되어야 한다고 말할때에 예수님께서는 너희가 돌이켜 작은 자 되어라 라고 말씀하십니다. 어른에게 전적으로 의존하는 어린아이처럼 하나님께 전적으로 의존하는 자가 되어라. 그리고 자신을 낮추어 형제를 영접하는 자가 되어라. 너희가 서로 작은 자, 어린아이와 같은 자가 되어 스스로를 높이지 말아라. 또 형제를 실족하게 하지 말아라. 그에게 미칠 화가 실로 크다. 여러분 작은 자 되십시오. 그리고 작은 자된 서로를 영접하십시오 그때에 예수님께서 말씀하시는 하늘 나라가 이 땅 가운데 임할 것입니다.

[Conclusion]

While the world tells us we must become "big" and "great," Jesus tells us to "turn and become little." Become like a child who depends entirely on their father.

Lower yourselves. Welcome your brothers and sisters. Do not exalt yourself over others, and do not cause your brother to stumble, for the consequences are truly great.

Brothers and sisters, become the little ones. And receive one another as little ones. When we do that, the kingdom of heaven that Jesus spoke of will truly manifest here on this earth.
