17:1 엿새 후에 예수께서 베드로와 야고보와 그 형제 요한을 데리시고 따로 높은 산에 올라 가셨더니

17:2 그들 앞에서 변형되사 그 얼굴이 해 같이 빛나며 옷이 빛과 같이 희어졌더라

17:3 그 때에 모세와 엘리야가 예수와 더불어 말하는 것이 그들에게 보이거늘

1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

17:4 베드로가 예수께 여쭈어 이르되 주여 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋사오니 만일 주께서 원하시면 내가 여기서 초막 셋을 짓되 하나는 주님을 위하여, 하나는 모세를 위하여, 하나는 엘리야를 위하여 하리이다

4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

17:5 말할 때에 홀연히 빛난 구름이 그들을 덮으며 구름 속에서 소리가 나서 이르시되 이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자니 너희는 그의 말을 들으라 하시는지라

5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

17:6 제자들이 듣고 엎드려 심히 두려워하니

17:7 예수께서 나아와 그들에게 손을 대시며 이르시되 일어나라 두려워 말라 하시니

17:8 제자들이 눈을 들고 보매 오직 예수 외에는 아무도 보이지 아니하더라

6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

17:9 저희가 산에서 내려올 때에 예수께서 명하여 이르시되 인자가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나기 전에는 본 것을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하시니

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

17:10 제자들이 물어 이르되 그러면 어찌하여 서기관들이 엘리야가 먼저 와야 하리라 하나이까

10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

17:11 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 엘리야가 과연 먼저 와서 모든 일을 회복하리라

17:12 내가 너희에게 말하노니 엘리야가 이미 왔으되 사람들이 알지 못하고 임의로 대우하였도다 인자도 이와 같이 그들에게 고난을 받으리라 하시니

17:13 그제서야 제자들이 예수께서 말씀하신 것이 세례 요한인 줄을 깨달으니라

11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

                어제의 말씀에서 ‘주는 그리스도시요 살아계신 하나님의 아들이시니이다’ 라고 고백한 베드로의 고백을 들으신 예수님은 비로소 제자들에게 당신께서 이 땅에 오신 이유를 나타내십니다. 그것은 바로 우리를 위한 예수님의 고난과 부활이었습니다. 그리고 예수님께서는 제자들의 길 또한 고난을 수반한 길이라는 것을 말씀하셨습니다. 오늘 말씀에 예수님께서 변화산에서 당신의 영광을 드러내신 것은 바로 예수님께서 하셨던 이 말씀들이 모두 사실이라는 것을 보여줍니다. 오늘은 “영광을 우리에게 보여주시는 이유”에 대해서 함께 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

In yesterday’s text, we heard Peter’s great confession: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Only after this confession did Jesus begin to reveal to His disciples the true reason He came to this earth: His suffering and resurrection for our sakes. He also made it clear that the path of a disciple is one that involves suffering.

Today’s passage, where Jesus reveals His glory on the Mount of Transfiguration, serves as a powerful validation that everything Jesus said is true. Today, I want to share a message titled: “The Reason He Shows Us His Glory.”

                먼저 예수님께서 보여주신 영광에 대해 이야기 하기 원합니다. 예수님께서 이들 앞에서 그 모습을 변화하신 것은 단순히 당신의 영광을 드러내시는 것이 목적이 아니었습니다. 예수님께서 당신의 영광을 드러내셨던 것은 베드로가 고백했던 메시아 고백의 주인이 바로 당신이심을 알려주시기 위함이었던 것입니다. 이는 또한 예수님께서 앞에서 말씀하셨던 모든 말씀이 반드시 이루어지는 것임을 이들에게 알리시는 장면이기도 합니다.

                예수님은 해와 같이 밝게 빛나는 모습으로 변화하시며 모세와 엘리야와 더불어 말씀하십니다. 이들은 구약의 율법과 선지자를 대표하지요. 즉, 구약 전체가 예수 그리스도 안에서 성취된다는 사실을 상징하고 있는 것입니다. 그런데 그 성취는 무엇으로 이루어 지는 것일까요? 같은 사건을 다루고 있는 누가복음 9:31은 이렇게 말합니다. 모세와 엘리야가 “영광 중에 나타나서 장차 예수께서 예루살렘에서 별세하실 것을 말할새” 그렇습니다. 이들은 예수님의 고난과 부활을 통해 이 모든 것이 성취 될 것을 이야기 하고 있는 것입니다.

[1. Glory as the Fulfillment of the Promise]

First, let’s look at the nature of this glory. When Jesus was transfigured before them, the purpose wasn't merely to show off His divine radiance. It was to confirm that He is indeed the owner of the Messianic title Peter had confessed. It was a scene declaring that every word Jesus had spoken would surely come to pass.

Jesus’ face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as light. Then, Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Him. These two figures represent the Law and the Prophets—the entirety of the Old Testament. Their presence signifies that the whole of Scripture is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

But what exactly were they discussing? Luke 9:31, which records the same event, tells us that Moses and Elijah “appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.” (ESV) They were discussing His suffering and resurrection. The glory on the mountain was inextricably linked to the sacrifice on the cross.

                하나님께서는 이들을 또한 빛난 구름으로 덮으시며 육성으로 말씀하십니다. 예수님이야말로 하나님의 사랑하는 아들이시니 너희는 그의 말을 들으라고 말이지요. 베드로는 후에 자신의 죽음이 임박한 것을 알았을 때에 베드로후서 1:12-18을 통해 이 사건을 다시 언급합니다. 그는 “내가 항상 너희에게 생각나게 하려 하노라” 라면서 그 말씀을 시작하지요. 마찬가지입니다. 예수님께서 이들에게 당신의 놀라운 영광을 드러내셨던 것은 바로 이들에게 항상 생각나게 하시려, 기억하게 하시려 그렇게 하신 것입니다. 무엇을 기억하게 하시려는 것입니까? 바로 예수님이야말로 그리스도시요 살아계신 하나님의 아들이심을 기억하게 하시려는 것입니다. 우리도 때로 신앙의 길을 걷다가 보면 주님의 영광을 깊이 경험할 때가 있습니다. 그런데 이 체험은 그 자체가 목적이 아니라 주님이 누구신지, 주님께서 우리를 위해 어떤 일을 행하셨는지 항상 생각나게 하려 하심인 것입니다.

[2. Glory for the Sake of Remembrance]

As this happened, God covered them with a bright cloud and spoke with an audible voice, declaring that Jesus is His beloved Son and commanding the disciples to “Listen to him.”

Years later, when Peter knew his own death was approaching, he mentioned this very event in 2 Peter 1:12-18. He began by saying, “Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities.” (ESV)

This is a crucial point. Jesus revealed His stunning glory to the disciples so that they would always remember. He wanted them to hold onto the truth that He is the Christ, even when they would later see Him hanging on a cross.

We, too, sometimes experience the overwhelming glory and presence of God in our journey of faith. These "mountaintop experiences" are not the end goal themselves. Rather, they are given so that we might always remember who the Lord is and what He has done for us, especially when we walk through the dark valleys of life.

                그렇다면 이렇게 주님의 영광을 깊이 경험한 우리가 해야 할 것은 무엇일까요? 하나님께서 빛난 구름으로 이들을 덮으시고 말씀하실 때에 단 하나의 명령만 하셨습니다. 그것은 바로 “그의 말을 들으라” 였습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 우리에게 이런 은혜를 주신 예수님의 말씀에 순종해야 합니다. 하나님이 바라시는 것은 우리가 이런 하나님의 임재를 누리는 순간에 머물러 있는 것이 아니라 이후의 삶에서 예수님의 말씀을 붙들고 순종하며 살아가는 것입니다. 베드로가 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋사오니 여기에 초막을 짓자고 할 때에 하나님께서 말씀하셨던 것이 바로 “너희는 그의 말을 들으라”는 명령인 것입니다.

[3. The Command: Listen to Him]

What, then, should be our response to experiencing the Lord’s glory? When God covered them with the cloud, He gave only one command: “Listen to him.” (v. 5)

We must obey the words of Jesus, the One who has given us such grace. God does not want us to simply stay in the moment of "feeling" His presence. Peter wanted to build three tents and stay on the mountain because it was "good to be there." But God interrupted him with the command to listen and obey. God desires for us to take the strength from that encounter and live a life of obedience in the world below.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님께서 제자들에게 당신이 누구신지를 밝히시고 당신께서 우리를 위해 십자가에서 죽으시고 부활 할 것을 밝히셨습니다. 그리고 그것을 이들의 마음에 새기기 위하여 변화산에서 당신이 바로 그 메시아이심을 드러내셨습니다. 마찬가지 입니다. 우리는 우리에게 보여주신 하나님의 임재와 영광을 기억해야 합니다. 그런 경험들을 통해 우리는 늘 예수님이 누구신지, 예수님께서 우리를 위하여 어떤 일을 행하셨는지 항상 기억해야 합니다. 그리고 우리는 그 기억에만 머무는 것이 아니라 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀을 순종하는 자가 되어야 합니다. 바로 그것이 예수님께서 영광을 우리에게 보여주시는 이유인 것입니다.

[Conclusion]

Jesus revealed His identity to the disciples and spoke of His impending death and resurrection. To engrave this truth into their hearts, He showed them His true Messianic glory on the mountain.

It is the same for us today. We must remember the moments of God’s presence and glory in our lives. Through those experiences, we must constantly remind ourselves of who Jesus is and what He has accomplished for us.

But we must not stop at the memory. We must become those who listen to His voice and live in obedience. That is the ultimate reason why He shows us His glory.
