17:15 주여 내 아들을 불쌍히 여기소서 그가 간질로 심히 고생하여 자주 불에도 넘어지며 물에도 넘어지는지라

17:16 내가 주의 제자들에게 데리고 왔으나 능히 고치지 못하더이다

[Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy]

14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

17:17 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 믿음이 없고 패역한 세대여 내가 얼마나 너희와 함께 있으며 얼마나 너희에게 참으리요 그를 이리로 데려오라 하시니라

17:18 이에 예수께서 꾸짖으시니 귀신이 나가고 아이가 그 때부터 나으니라

17 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

17:19 이 때에 제자들이 조용히 예수께 나아와 이르되 우리는 어찌하여 쫓아내지 못하였나이까

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

17:20 이르시되 너희 믿음이 작은 까닭이니라 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 만일 너희에게 믿음이 겨자씨 한 알 만큼만 있어도 이 산을 명하여 여기서 저기로 옮겨지라 하면 옮겨 질 것이요 또 너희가 못할 것이 없으리라

20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” [21]

17:23 죽임을 당하고 제삼일에 살아나리라 하시니 제자들이 매우 근심하더라

[Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time]

22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.

17:24 가버나움에 이르니 반 세겔 받는 자들이 베드로에게 나아와 이르되 너의 선생은 반 세겔을 내지 아니하느냐

The Temple Tax

24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”

17:25 이르되 내신다 하고 집에 들어가니 예수께서 먼저 이르시되 시몬아 네 생각은 어떠하냐 세상 임금들이 누구에게 관세와 국세를 받느냐 자기 아들에게냐 타인에게냐

25 “Yes, he does,” he replied.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”

17:26 베드로가 이르되 타인에게니이다 예수께서 이르시되 그렇다면 아들들은 세를 면하리라

17:27 그러나 우리가 그들이 실족하지 않게 하기 위하여 네가 바다에 가서 낚시를 던져 먼저 오르는 고기를 가져 입을 열면 돈 한 세겔을 얻을 것이니 가져다가 나와 너를 위하여 주라 하시니라

26 “From others,” Peter answered.

“Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. 27 “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

                오늘 본문의 말씀은 얼핏 보면 전혀 상관 없는 세가지 다른 이야기가 나열되어 있는 것 같습니다. 첫번째는 간질이 심한 아이를 고치시는 장면. 두번째는 제자들에게 죽음과 부활을 다시 말씀하시는 장면. 그리고 마지막 세번째는 성전세를 내시는 장면. 이렇게 전혀 다른 세가지 이야기가 진행되고 있는 것 같습니다. 그런데 이 세가지 이야기를 관통하는 주제가 있으니 그것은 바로 믿음입니다. 오늘은 예수님을 통해 하나님의 자녀가 된 우리에게 요구하시는 믿음이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

At first glance, today’s passage seems to be a collection of three completely unrelated stories. First, we see Jesus healing a boy with severe seizures. Second, He speaks to His disciples again about His death and resurrection. And finally, we see the curious incident of paying the temple tax.

While they may seem distinct, there is a single theme that flows through all three: Faith. Today, I want to share a message titled, “The Faith God Requires of Us as His Children.”

                첫번째 이야기입니다. 예수님께서 제자들과 함께 변화산에서 하산하셨습니다. 무리에게 이르자 한 사람이 예수님께 다가와 간질에 걸린 자신의 아들을 고쳐달라고 요청하지요. 그러면서 이미 제자들에게 데려왔었지만 그들은 고치지 못하였다는 말을 합니다. 예수님은 탄식하십니다. 이 때 예수님의 탄식은 제자들을 향한 탄식이라기 보다는 예수님을 믿지 못하는 이 세대 전체에 대한 탄식입니다. “믿음이 없고 패역한 세대여.” ‘패역하다’라는 말씀은 신명기 32:5, 또, 20절에서 모세가 이스라엘을 가르켜 사용했던 말이기도 하지요. 후에 예수님께 조용히 나아와 묻는 제자들에게 예수님께서는 믿음의 본질이 무엇인지 알려주십니다. 그것은 곧 필요한 능력을 공급해 주시는 하나님 아버지와 예수님을 신뢰하는 것입니다. 겨자씨만한 믿음만 있어도 산을 옮길 수 있다고 하시는 말씀. 산에 옮겨져라 라고 명하는 것은 우리의 믿음이지요. 하지만 그 산을 옮기시는 것은 하나님의 능력입니다. 비록 작은 믿음이라 할지라도 하나님 아버지와 예수님의 능력을 신뢰하고 의지하는 것. 이것이 바로 믿음이라는 것입니다.

1. Faith: Trusting the Power of the Father (The Healing)

In the first story, Jesus descends from the Mount of Transfiguration with His disciples. A man approaches Him, begging Jesus to heal his son who suffers from seizures. He mentions that he had already brought the boy to the disciples, but they were unable to heal him.

Jesus sighs with a heavy heart. His lamentation—“O faithless and twisted generation”—is not just directed at the disciples, but at the entire generation that fails to believe. Interestingly, the word "twisted" (or "perverse") is the same language Moses used to describe Israel in Deuteronomy 32.

Later, when the disciples ask privately why they failed, Jesus reveals the essence of faith: It is trusting in the Father and the Son, who supply the necessary power. He tells them that even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. We must remember: it is our faith that commands the mountain to move, but it is God’s power that actually moves it. Even if our faith feels small, if it is rooted in the reliability of our Father, it becomes a channel for the miraculous.

                두번째, 예수님께서는 갈릴리에 모이는 제자들에게 당신의 죽음과 부활에 대해 다시 말씀하십니다. 이 말씀을 듣고 제자들은 매우 근심하였다. 큰 슬픔에 잠겼다고 말을 하고 있습니다. 그런데 가만히 보면 예수님께서는 당신의 죽음만을 말씀하신 것이 아닙니다. 분명히 “제삼일에 살아나리라” 말씀하고 계시지요. 그러나 제자들은 “인자가 장차 사람들의 손에 넘겨져 죽임을 당하고”라는 말씀이 너무나 크게 들렸던 것 같습니다. 아니면 그들의 세계관, 상식으로는 도저히 죽은 자가 다시 살아난다는 예수님의 말씀을 믿지 못하였던 것일 수도 있겠습니다. 예수님은 분명히 부활을 말씀하고 계시지만 믿음 없는 그들은 들어도 듣지 못하는 것입니다. 그래서 매우 근심하였던 것입니다. 말씀이 온전히 들리지 않으면 듣더라도 근심하게 됩니다. 믿음이 있어야 말씀이 온전히 들리고 소망을 가질 수 있게 되는 것입니다.

2. Faith: Listening with Hope (The Prediction)

Next, Jesus speaks again to His disciples in Galilee about His impending death and resurrection. The text says the disciples were “greatly distressed.” But look closely—Jesus didn’t just talk about His death. He clearly said, “And he will be raised on the third day.” Why were they so sad? It’s because the words “delivered into the hands of men and killed” echoed so loudly in their ears that they couldn’t hear the promise of the resurrection. Or perhaps, in their human logic, they simply couldn’t believe a dead man could live again.

When we lack faith, we hear God's Word but fail to truly "listen." We focus on the "death" (the problem) and miss the "resurrection" (the hope). True faith allows us to hear the whole message, replacing distress with the hope of the Gospel.

                세번째, 가버나움에서 성전세를 내려고 집으로 들어오는 베드로에게 예수님께서 먼저 물어보십니다. 세상의 왕들은 누구에게서 세금을 걷느냐? 자기 아들들에게냐? 아니면 다른 사람들이냐? 다른 사람들이라고 대답하는 베드로에게 예수님께서는 그러면 아들들은 세금을 면하리라 라고 말씀하시지요. 이 문답을 통하여 예수님께서 말씀하시는 것은 두가지 입니다. 첫째는 “아들들은 세를 면하리라” 는 말씀으로 예수님 뿐만 아니라 예수님을 믿는 자들은 하나님의 자녀가 된다는 말씀을 하고 계십니다. 그 예로 성전세는 반 세겔인데 예수님께서는 당신의 몫 뿐만 아니라 베드로의 몫도 포함한 한 세겔을 물고기에게서 얻게 하시지요. 원래 성전세란 출애굽기 30:16을 보면 생명을 대속하는 목적으로 내는 몸값이었습니다. 예수님을 믿는 자들은 예수님께서 자신의 몸으로 대속하셨기에 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 얻는 것입니다. 두번째는 우리의 생각을 뛰어넘는 방식으로 우리의 필요를 채워주시는 예수님을 믿어야 합니다. 앞에서 하나님 아버지의 능력을 신뢰하고 의지하는 것이 믿음이라고 말씀드렸었습니다. 또 믿음이 있어야 우리의 생각을 뛰어넘는 예수님의 말씀이 온전히 들리게 된다고 말씀드렸었습니다. 그리고 지금 우리는 놀라운 예수님의 공급하심을 봅니다. 베드로가 어부이지만 물고기 입에서 한 세겔을 얻을 것이라고 상상이나 했을까요? 그러나 예수님은 베드로가 충분히 할 수 있는 일들을 통해서 그가 상상할 수도 없는 공급하심을 이루십니다. 마치 믿음으로 산에게 명령하면 그 산이 옮기워지는 것 같은 놀라운 기적이지요. 이 기적으로 예수님께서는 베드로의 필요를 채워주십니다.

3. Faith: Living as Children and Trusting His Provision (The Coin)

Finally, in Capernaum, Jesus asks Peter a question before he can even bring up the matter of the temple tax: "From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?" When Peter answers, "From others," Jesus replies, "Then the sons are free."

Through this dialogue, Jesus teaches us two things:

• Our Identity: By saying "the sons are free," Jesus is declaring that not only He, but also those who believe in Him, have become children of God. In Exodus 30, the temple tax was a "ransom" for one's life. But because Jesus redeemed us with His own body, we are no longer "others" paying a ransom; we are children of the King.

• His Provision: We must trust a Savior who fills our needs in ways that transcend our logic. Jesus told Peter to go fish and that he would find a shekel in the fish's mouth—enough for both of them. Peter was a fisherman, but could he ever have imagined finding a coin in a fish's mouth to pay his taxes? Jesus used a familiar task (fishing) to provide an unimaginable miracle. This is the "mountain-moving" provision of God.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님을 통하여 우리는 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다. 자녀된 우리에게 하나님께서는 믿음을 요구하십니다. 그것은 겨자씨 한 알 만큼의 믿음입니다. 비록 작은 믿음이라 할지라도 하나님 아버지의 능력을 신뢰하고 의지하는 것. 그래서 우리에게 우리가 할 수 있는 일들을 명하실 때에 믿음으로 그 일을 행하는 것. 그 때에 우리는 우리의 생각을 뛰어넘는 하나님의 공급하심을 보게 될 것입니다. 믿음으로 말씀을 듣고 소망을 가지십시오. 부활의 주님이 자녀된 우리의 기도를 들으실 것입니다.

[Conclusion]

Through Jesus Christ, we have become children of God. And to us, His children, God asks for just one thing: faith as small as a mustard seed. This means trusting and relying on the Father’s power, even when our own strength is gone. It means that when He commands us to do what we can (like Peter casting a hook), we act in faith, expecting Him to do what only He can do. When we listen to His Word with faith, we find hope instead of distress.

I pray that you would listen to the Word with faith and hold onto hope. Our risen Lord hears the prayers of His children and will provide for you in ways you cannot even imagine.
