13 But they soon forgot what he had done

    and did not wait for his plan to unfold.

14 In the desert they gave in to their craving;

    in the wilderness they put God to the test.

15 So he gave them what they asked for,

    but sent a wasting disease among them.

106:23 그러므로 여호와께서 그들을 멸하리라 하셨으나 그가 택하신 모세가 그 어려움 가운데에서 그의 앞에 서서 그의 노를 돌이켜 멸하시지 아니하게 하였도다

16 In the camp they grew envious of Moses

    and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.

17 The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan;

    it buried the company of Abiram.

18 Fire blazed among their followers;

    a flame consumed the wicked.

19 At Horeb they made a calf

    and worshiped an idol cast from metal.

20 They exchanged their glorious God

    for an image of a bull, which eats grass.

21 They forgot the God who saved them,

    who had done great things in Egypt,

22 miracles in the land of Ham

    and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

23 So he said he would destroy them—

    had not Moses, his chosen one,

stood in the breach before him

    to keep his wrath from destroying them.

24 Then they despised the pleasant land;

    they did not believe his promise.

25 They grumbled in their tents

    and did not obey the Lord.

26 So he swore to them with uplifted hand

    that he would make them fall in the wilderness,

27 make their descendants fall among the nations

    and scatter them throughout the lands.

106:28 그들이 또 브올의 바알과 연합하여 죽은 자에게 제사한 음식을 먹어서

106:29 그 행위로 주를 격노하게 함으로써 재앙이 그들 중에 크게 유행하였도다

106:30 그 때에 비느하스가 일어서서 중재하니 이에 재앙이 그쳤도다

106:31 이 일이 그의 공의로 인정되었으니 대대로 영원까지로다

28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor

    and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;

29 they aroused the Lord’s anger by their wicked deeds,

    and a plague broke out among them.

30 But Phinehas stood up and intervened,

    and the plague was checked.

31 This was credited to him as righteousness

    for endless generations to come.

32 By the waters of Meribah they angered the Lord,

    and trouble came to Moses because of them;

33 for they rebelled against the Spirit of God,

    and rash words came from Moses’ lips.

         아무런 자격없는 이스라엘 백성들을 하나님께서는 그럼에도 불구하고 구원하셨습니다. 그 홍해에서의 구원을 경험한 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 말씀을 믿고 하나님을 찬양하는 노래를 불렀다고 어제 말씀은 전하고 있습니다. 그런데 오늘 본문의 말씀은 그 시작부터 그들이 하나님이 행하신 일을 곧 잊어버렸다고 말합니다. 그리고 그들은 계속해서 하나님께 반역합니다. 우리는 그 반역의 역사와 그 결과가 끊임없이 반복되는 것을 봅니다. 그런데 그 가운데서도 하나님께서는 당신의 중보자를 세우십니다. 오늘은 “무너진 가운데에서 하나님 앞에 서는 중보자”라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: A Cycle of Forgetfulness]

God saved the Israelites, though they were utterly undeserving. Yesterday, we saw how they sang praises to God after experiencing the miracle of the Red Sea. Yet, today’s passage begins with a startling contrast: they "soon forgot" what He had done. What follows is a history of repeated rebellion and its consequences. However, even in the midst of this cycle, God raises up His intercessors. Today, I want to share a message titled: “The Intercessor Who Stands in the Breach.”

먼저 이들이 어떻게 무너졌는지 함께 보기 원합니다. 본문은 광야에서 있었던 총 여섯 가지 사건들을 다루고 있는데요. 각 사건의 중요한 부분만을 간단하게 짚으면서 함께 살펴보도록 하겠습니다. 첫번째, 13-15절은 이들이 하나님의 구원을 “곧 잊어버렸다” 라고 말하고 있습니다. 그 결과가 무엇인가요? 그들이 하나님이 행하신 일을 잊어버리자 그들은 하나님의 말씀을 기다릴 수 없게 되었습니다. 기다리지 못하면 무엇이 생깁니까? 조급함이 생깁니다. 내가 원하는 것이 내가 원하는 때에 이루어져야 합니다. 보통, 지금 당장!이지요. 마찬가지입니다. 14절은 그들이 광야에서 욕심을 크게 냈다고 합니다. 분명 하나님께서 이들을 만나로 먹여오셨음에도 불구하고 이들은 하나님께 고기가 먹고 싶다고 하나님을 시험하였지요. 그 결과로 그들은 원하는 것을 얻었지만 큰 재앙 또한 얻었습니다.

두번째, 그들은 하나님이 세우신 지도자의 권위에 도전했습니다. 하나님께서 모세를 통하여 말씀하시는 것은 모두가 알고 있는데 특별히 본문은 아론을 모세의 대언자가 아니라 여호와의 거룩한 자라고 쓰고 있지요. 무슨 말입니까? 이들은 모세와 아론에게 반역한 것이 아니라 그들을 세우신 하나님께 반역하였다는 것입니다. 정작 이 반란을 이끌었던 고라의 이름은 아예 등장조차 하지 않지요. 그는 이름조차 남지 못하는 것입니다. 18절은 그들을 악인이라고 정의하고 있습니다.

세번째, 하나님이 직접 임재하셔서 당신을 계시하셨던 호렙산에서 그들은 우상을 숭배하였습니다. 이러한 일이 어떻게 일어날 수 있습니까? 21절을 보았더니 그들이 또 어떻게 했대요? 잊었나니. 22절은 이들의 범죄가 이들이 모르기 때문에, 무지해서 일어난 것이 아니라는 것을 말해줍니다. 분명히 그들은 하나님의 구원을 경험한 이들인데도 그들은 하나님을 잊었습니다. 의식적으로 하나님을 배반한 것입니다.

네번째, 그들은 기쁨의 땅, 약속의 땅을 멸시하였습니다. 하나님이 주시겠다고 약속하신 최고의 선물. 아름답고 탐스러운 땅을 그들은 경멸하고 쓰레기 취급을 하였습니다. 사람의 판단으로 하나님이 약속하신 말씀을 믿지 않고 자기 눈에 보이는대로 하나님께 원망하며 하나님의 음성 듣기를 거절하였습니다. 그 결과로 그들은 약속의 땅을 눈 앞에 두고도 그 땅에 들어가지 못하고 광야에서 죽었습니다. 그뿐인가요? 본문 27절은 그들로 인해 그들의 후손들 또한 여러 나라로 흩어져 포로가 되었다고 합니다. 이스라엘의 역사적인 비극이 바로 그들의 조상때부터 이어져내려온 것이라는 것입니다.

다섯번째, 그들은 브올의 바알과 연합하였다고 합니다. 이전 세대가 광야에서 다 스러지고 새로운 세대가 일어났는데도 그들은 우상숭배에서 자유롭지 못했습니다. 우상 숭배뿐만 아니라 “연합하였다”라고 하지 않습니까? 이는 그들이 남녀가 한몸이 되는 것 처럼 바알과 한 몸이 되었다는 말입니다. 앞의 호렙산 우상숭배에서 하나님께서 진노하셨듯이 이번에도 하나님께서는 격노하셔서 그들에게 염병을 내리십니다.

1. Six Snapshots of Human Rebellion

Today’s text outlines six specific incidents in the wilderness. Let’s briefly look at how they fell:

• First (vv. 13-15): Impatience and Greed. They "soon forgot" His works and could not wait for His counsel. When we stop waiting, we become anxious; we want what we want, right now. They craved intensely in the wilderness, testing God for meat despite the Manna. God gave them what they asked for, but it came with a "wasting disease" for their souls.

• Second (vv. 16-18): Challenging Authority. They envied Moses and Aaron. Note that the text calls Aaron "the holy one of the Lord." By challenging them, they were not just rebelling against men, but against the God who appointed them. Interestingly, Korah—the ringleader—isn't even mentioned by name here; he left no honorable legacy.

• Third (vv. 19-22): Idolatry at Horeb. At the very mountain where God revealed Himself, they made a calf. Why? Because they "forgot" (v. 21). Their sin wasn't due to ignorance; it was a conscious betrayal of the God who saved them.

• Fourth (vv. 24-27): Despising the Promised Land. They treated God’s greatest gift—the pleasant land—as if it were garbage. They chose to believe their own eyes over God’s promise and grumbled in their tents. As a result, that generation died in the wilderness, and the seeds of future exile were sown.

• Fifth (vv. 28-31): Spiritual Adultery at Baal-Peor. Even the new generation "joined themselves" to Baal. This "joining" implies a union as intimate as marriage. Just as before, God’s wrath broke out in a plague.

자 그런데 그때에도 지금도 하나님께서 노하시고 격노하시지만 하나님이 세우신 중보자가 일어납니다. 23절입니다. “그가 택하신 모세” 중보자는 하나님이 택하신 사람입니다. 그 사람이 하는 일이 무엇입니까? “그 어려움 가운데에서 하나님의 앞에 서서 그의 노를 돌이켜 멸하시지 아니하게 하였도다.” 여기서 “어려움”이란 적의 공격으로 성벽에 생긴 틈을 가르키는 군사적인 용어입니다. 에스겔 22:30절에서 말하는 “성 무너진 데”가 바로 이것이지요. 제가 한 번 읽어보겠습니다. “이 땅을 위하여 성을 쌓으며 성 무너진 데를 막아 서서 나로 하여금 멸하지 못하게 할 사람을 내가 그 가운데에서 찾다가 찾지 못하였으므로” 공동체가 범죄하여 그 성이 무너졌을 때에 하나님께서는 그 즉시 진노하시는 것이 아니라 그 무너진 데를 막아 서서 하나님 앞에 서는 사람을 찾는다는 것입니다. 본문 말씀에 모세가 그랬고 비느하스가 그러하였습니다. 광야 제 2세대가 브올의 바알과 연합하였을 “그때에 비느하스가 일어서서 중재하니 이에 재앙이 그쳤도다” 라고 하지 않으십니까? 이렇게 중재자가 일어나 하나님의 진노를 막는 것. 이것을 하나님께서는 의로 인정하신다고 하십니다. 대대로 영원토록 의롭다 하십니다. 이것이 바로 하나님이 찾으시는 중보자인 것입니다. 오늘의 시편을 적은 시인도 자신의 공동체와 그 조상들의 죄악을 사해달라고 하나님 앞에 서는 중보자이지요. 하나님께서는 지금도 중보자를 찾으십니다.

2. The Intercessor: Standing in the Breach

In the midst of this wrath, God’s intercessors stood up. Look at verse 23: "Moses, his chosen one." An intercessor is someone chosen by God. What did he do? "He stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath."

The word "breach" ( in Hebrew) is a military term referring to a gap in a city wall made by an enemy's attack. Ezekiel 22:30 echoes this: "I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it." When a community sins, a "breach" opens in their spiritual wall. God does not immediately destroy; He looks for one person to stand in that gap, to face Him and plead for mercy.

Moses did this, and so did Phinehas. When the second generation joined Baal, "Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stayed" (v. 30). Standing up to stop God’s wrath is counted as righteousness—a legacy that lasts forever. This is the intercessor God seeks. Even the psalmist writing this today is standing as an intercessor, pleading for his people.

마지막 여섯번째, 그러나 중보자마저도 그 죄악에서 자유롭지 못합니다. 그들이 므리바 물에서 여호와를 노하시게 하였더니 그들 때문에 중보자인 모세가 하나님께 범죄하게 되지요. 결국 하나님을 대면하여 알고 하나님 앞에서 이들을 중보하였던 모세마저도 공동체의 반복된 죄악 앞에 무너지고 맙니다. 중보자도 결국 인간인 것이지요. 그래서 우리는 헷갈리면 안됩니다. 우리는 하나님께서 택하셨기 때문에 중보자로 있을 수 있는 것입니다. 그것은 하나님의 전적인 선택이지 우리가 어떠함으로 성취한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 오히려 그 무너진 가운데에서 하나님 앞에 서는 자이기 때문에 더욱 더 두려운 마음으로 우리 자신을 돌아보아야 하는 것이지요.

3. The Fragility of Human Intercessors

However, even the intercessor is not immune to sin. Look at the sixth incident (vv. 32-33). At the waters of Meribah, the people’s rebellion provoked Moses so much that he "spoke rashly with his lips." Even Moses, who knew God face-to-face, eventually stumbled under the weight of the community's repeated sin.

This teaches us a vital lesson: We are intercessors only by God’s grace. It is His sovereign choice, not our own perfection, that places us there. Standing in the breach is a fearful and holy calling that requires us to look at our own hearts with even greater humility.

말씀을 맺습니다. 이스라엘이 반복해서 무너질 때에 하나님께서는 찾으십니다. 이들을 위하여 그 무너진 곳에 서서 하나님 앞에 설 중보자를 말입니다. 만약 하나님께서 여러분을 세우셨다면 여러분 기도하십시오. 여러분을 통하여 하나님이 새 일을 행하십니다. 그리고 하나님께서 그것을 여러분의 의로 인정하실 것입니다. 대대로 영원까지 인정하신다고 하지 않으십니까. 그리고 만약 여러분 마음에 혹여나 여러분의 죄악으로 인하여 두려운 마음이 든다면 여러분 기억하십시오. 우리에게는 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 기도하시는 성령님과 새 언약의 중보자이신 예수님이 계십니다. 예수님을 의지하십시오. 그분이 진정한 중보자이십니다. 예수님을 의지하여 무너진 가운데에서 하나님 앞에 서서 기도하시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Conclusion: Rely on the True Intercessor]

When Israel fell repeatedly, God searched for someone to stand in the gap. If God has called you to pray for your family, your church, or your nation, do not take it lightly. God is doing a new thing through you, and He counts your intercession as righteousness.

But if you feel overwhelmed by your own sins or the weight of the "breach," remember this: We have the Holy Spirit, who intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. More importantly, we have Jesus Christ, the Mediator of the New Covenant. He is the ultimate Intercessor who did not just stand in the breach, but took the full blow of the wrath upon Himself on the Cross. Rely on Jesus. In His name, stand in the breach and pray.
