105:37 마침내 그들을 인도하여 은 금을 가지고 나오게 하시니 그의 지파 중에 비틀거리는 자가 하나도 없었도다

37 He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold,

    and from among their tribes no one faltered.

38 Egypt was glad when they left,

    because dread of Israel had fallen on them.

105:39 여호와께서 낮에는 구름을 펴사 덮개를 삼으시고 밤에는 불로 밝히셨으며

105:40 그들이 구한즉 메추라기를 가져오시고 또 하늘의 양식으로 그들을 만족하게 하셨도다

39 He spread out a cloud as a covering,

    and a fire to give light at night.

40 They asked, and he brought them quail;

    he fed them well with the bread of heaven.

41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out;

    it flowed like a river in the desert.

42 For he remembered his holy promise

    given to his servant Abraham.

43 He brought out his people with rejoicing,

    his chosen ones with shouts of joy;

44 he gave them the lands of the nations,

    and they fell heir to what others had toiled for—

45 that they might keep his precepts

    and observe his laws.

영국의 의사이자 목사였던 마틴 로이드 존스는 논리적인 설교와 더불어 말씀과 성령에 대한 열정으로 인하여 불붙은 논리Logic on fire라는 별명을 가지게 되었습니다. 그는 평소에 “세계 역사를 이해하는 열쇠는 하나님의 왕국이다.”라고 말했습니다.

한마디로 말하자면 세계의 역사는 보이지 않는 손이신 하나님의 구속의 역사라는 것입니다. 그래서 윌리엄 S. 플러머는 “계시 뿐 아니라 역사와 자연 속에서도 하나님을 보는 자는 복이 있다.”라고 말했습니다. 우리는 신학에서 특별계시라고 말하는 예수님과 성경 말씀을 통해서 당연히 하나님을 보지만, 동시에 자연계시인 자연과 학문, 역사 속에 나타나시는 하나님의 손길과 능력을 볼 수 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 우리 하나님은 모든 만물 가운데 계시며, 만물의 주가 되시기 때문입니다.

그런 점에서 역사가 중요합니다. 시편에는 3편의 역사 시편이 있습니다. 연대순으로 역사적 사건을 요약하는 시편 78, 105, 106편이 바로 역사 시편입니다. 인간을 창조하시고, 인간의 역사에 개입하셔서 밀접하게 인간과 함께하시는 하나님의 모습을 노래한 것이 역사 시편입니다. 특별히 105편은 106편과 완전한 짝을 이루면서 시편 제4권을 마무리합니다.

본 시는 아마도 바벨론 포로기 이후에 기록되어진 것으로 보이며, 각각의 내용과 목적은 다음과 같습니다.

먼저 시편 105편은 하나님이 이스라엘을 어떻게 대하셨는지를 기록, 격려하는 것이 목적입니다.

그 다음 시편 106편은 그럼에도 이스라엘은 하나님을 어떻게 대했는지 기록, 경고하는 것이 목적입니다.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who was a British physician and minister, earned the nickname "Logic on Fire" due to his logical preaching combined with a passion for the Word and the Holy Spirit. He often said, “The key to understanding world history is the Kingdom of God”. In short, world history is the history of redemption guided by the invisible hand of God. For this reason, William S. Plumer stated, “Blessed is the person who sees God not only in revelation but also in history and nature”.

While we naturally see God through Jesus and the Scriptures—what theology calls "special revelation"—we must also be able to perceive God’s hand and power within "natural revelation," such as nature, academia, and history. This is because our God dwells within all things and is the Lord of all creation.

In that regard, history is of great importance. There are three "history psalms" in the Book of Psalms: Psalms 78, 105, and 106, which summarize historical events in chronological order. These history psalms sing of God, who created humanity, intervened in human history, and remains intimately present with us. Specifically, Psalm 105 forms a perfect pair with Psalm 106 and concludes the fourth book of Psalms.

This psalm appears to have been written after the Babylonian exile, and the content and purpose of each are as follows:

• Psalm 105: Its purpose is to record and provide encouragement by showing how God treated Israel.

• Psalm 106: Its purpose is to record and provide a warning by showing how Israel treated God in return.

역사는 “마침내”이다.

오늘 본문 37절은 ‘마침내’로 시작합니다. 그래서 히브리어 원문과 영어성경을 찾아 보았습니다. 히브리어 원문 성경에는 ‘그리고’에 해당하는 접속사 와우가 있습니다. 이것은 ‘그리고’의 의미이거나, 앞문장과 연결을 해주는 접두어입니다.

그래서 영어 번역본들은 아예 생략(NIV)하거나, Then을 사용하여(ESV, NASB) 사건의 순차적 진행이나 전환을, 또는 also를 사용하여 하나님이 주시는 복의 풍요로움을 강조(KJV)합니다. 그런 점에서 한국어 번역이 나쁘지 않습니다. 오랜 시간 하나님의 신실하신 인도하심을 통해서 이스라엘 백성이 출애굽할 수 있었다는 점에서 한글개역개정 성경의 마침내라는 번역은 그 의미를 잘 살리고 있습니다.

역사는 마침내입니다. 마침내 하나님께서 그들을 구원하셨다!

이것이 바로 역사입니다.

시편 기자는 하나님께서 그들을 구원 하시기까지 애굽이 이스라엘을 두려워 하도록(38) 흑암, 피, 개구리, 파리, 이, 우박, 화염, 황충, 메뚜기, 그리고 장자의 재앙을 내리셨습니다(28~36). 또한 하나님은 광야에서 구름, 불, 메추라기, 하늘의 양식 만나, 반석의 물 등으로 그들을 인도하시고 보호 하셨습니다. 그렇습니다. 하나님은 당신의 백성을 보호하시고, 먹이시고, 만족케 하시고 끝내는 구원하실 것입니다! 마침내 말입니다.

History is “Finally”

Today’s text, verse 37, begins with the word “Finally.” To understand this, I looked into the original Hebrew text and various English Bibles. In the original Hebrew, there is a conjunction called waw, which corresponds to “and.” This serves either to mean “and” or acts as a prefix connecting the verse to the preceding sentence.

Consequently, English translations handle this in different ways:

• NIV: Omits it entirely.

• ESV & NASB: Use "Then" to emphasize the sequential progression or a transition in events.

• KJV: Uses "also" to highlight the abundance of the blessings God provides.

  
  

In this regard, the Korean translation is quite effective. The choice of the word “Finally” in the Korean Revised Version captures the meaning well, reflecting how the people of Israel were able to depart in the Exodus through God’s long-standing and faithful guidance.

History is “Finally.” Finally, God saved them! This is exactly what history is.

The Psalmist notes that until God saved them, He brought plagues of darkness, blood, frogs, flies, lice, hail, flaming fire, locusts, grasshoppers, and the death of the firstborn so that Egypt would fear Israel (vv. 28–36, 38). Furthermore, God led and protected them in the wilderness with the cloud, fire, quail, manna (the bread of heaven), and water from the rock. Yes, indeed—God will protect, feed, and satisfy His people, and in the end, He will save them! Truly, finally.

역사는 “기억함”이다.

시편이나 역사서, 복음서 등은 반복되는 것이 매우 많습니다. 그래서 설교 하기가 상당히 힘든 것이 사실입니다. 왜 이렇게 반복하는 것이 많은 것일까요? 그것은 바로 “기억함”을 위해서 입니다. 역사는 바로 기억함 입니다. 무엇을 기억하기 위함일까요?

먼저는 하나님이 이스라엘을 기억하시는 것이 역사입니다(42).

하나님께서 이스라엘을 백성을 불과 구름과 하늘의 양식과 반석의 물로 인도하신 것은 그의 거룩한 말씀과 그의 종 아브라함을 기억하셨기 때문입니다. 이것은 하나님께서 언약을 기억하셨다는 의미입니다. 역사는 다른 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 당신의 백성과 하신 거룩한 말씀을 기억하시고 그 언약을 신실하게 지키시는 과정입니다. 하나님은 지금도 언약에 신실하신 하나님이십니다.

다음, 이렇게 기억하시는 이유는 이스라엘이 하나님을 기억하게 하시기 위함입니다(45).

그러므로 우리는 역사를 통해서 우리의 하나님을 보고, 그분의 하신 일을 기억해야 합니다. 그것이 주님이 우리에게 원하시는 것입니다. 

인생길, 걸어 온 길 추억해보십시오. 하나님의 돌보심의 은혜가 없이는 올 수 없었던 길입니다. 오늘도 광야에서 불과 구름, 만나와 반석의 물로 돌보시는 하나님의 성실하심은 계속됩니다. 하지만 이 은혜는 모든 인생들에게 주시는 은혜가 아닙니다. 바로 역사 속에서 역사하시는 그 하나님의 인도하심을 기억하는 자에게 주시는 특별한 은혜인 것입니다. 오늘도 그 풍성한 은혜를 누리는 자녀 되기를 바랍니다.  

History is “Remembering”

There is much repetition within the Psalms, the books of history, and the Gospels. It is true that this often makes preaching quite difficult. Why is there so much repetition? It is for the sake of “remembering”. History, quite simply, is remembering. But what is it that must be remembered?

First, history is God remembering Israel (v. 42). The reason God led the people of Israel with fire, clouds, heavenly food, and water from the rock is that He remembered His holy Word and His servant Abraham. This means that God remembered His covenant. History is nothing else but the process of God remembering the holy Word He spoke to His people and faithfully keeping that covenant. Even now, God remains faithful to His covenant.

Next, the reason He remembers in this way is so that Israel will remember God (v. 45). Therefore, we must see our God through history and remember the things He has done. That is what the Lord desires of us.

Reflect on your life’s journey and the path you have walked. It is a path that could not have been traveled without the grace of God’s care. Today, God’s faithfulness continues as He cares for us with fire and clouds, manna, and water from the rock in the wilderness. However, this grace is not a grace given to all lives. It is a special grace given to those who remember the guidance of God as He works through history. I hope you will be children of God who enjoy that abundant grace today.
