14:13 예수께서 들으시고 배를 타고 떠나사 따로 빈 들에 가시니 무리가 듣고 여러 고을로부터 걸어서 따라간지라

14:14 예수께서 나오사 큰 무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기사 그 중에 있는 병자를 고쳐 주시니라

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

14:15 저녁이 되매 제자들이 나아와 이르되 이 곳은 빈 들이요 때도 이미 저물었으니 무리를 보내어 마을에 들어가 먹을 것을 사 먹게 하소서

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

14:16 예수께서 이르시되 갈 것 없다 너희가 먹을 것을 주라

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

14:17 제자들이 이르되 여기 우리에게 있는 것은 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리뿐이니이다

17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.

14:18 이르시되 그것을 내게 가져오라 하시고

14:19 무리를 명하여 잔디 위에 앉히시고 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가지사 하늘을 우러러 축사하시고 떡을 떼어 제자들에게 주시매 제자들이 무리에게 주니

14:20 다 배불리 먹고 남은 조각을 열두 바구니에 차게 거두었으며

14:21 먹은 사람은 여자와 어린이 외에 오천 명이나 되었더라

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

            오늘 말씀은 우리가 익히 알고 있는 예수님의 오병이어의 기적입니다. 이 오병이어의 기적은 예수님의 정체가 무엇인지를 알리는 첫 번째 단원이기도 합니다. 어제 말씀으로 헤롯의 예수님에 대한 반응이 먼저 나오고, 그리스도의 정체를 보여주는 세가지 기적, 오병이어, 물위를 걸으심, 또 게네사렛의 치유가 나옵니다. 특별히 오늘 말씀은 양 떼를 불쌍히 여기시고 먹이시는 목자인 예수님을 묘사하고 있습니다. 그래서 오늘은 “예수님의 긍휼하심에 참여하라”는 제목으로 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Today’s passage is the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, which we know very well.

This miracle is the first section that reveals the true identity of Jesus.

Yesterday’s text showed Herod’s reaction to Jesus, followed by three miracles demonstrating Christ’s identity: the feeding of the five thousand, walking on water, and the healings at Gennesaret.

Specifically, today’s word portrays Jesus as the Shepherd who has compassion for His flock and feeds them.

Therefore, I want to share a message today titled, “Participate in the Compassion of Jesus.”

            먼저 예수님의 긍휼하심이 어떠한 긍휼하심인가 한 번 살펴보기 원합니다. 어제 말씀 마지막 12절을 보니 요한의 제자들이 요한을 장사하고 그 소식을 예수님께 아뢰었다라고 합니다. 오늘 말씀 시작인 13절은 예수님께서 그 소식을 들으시고 거기서, 배를 타고 빈 들, 즉 외딴 곳으로 홀로 물러가셨다 라고 말하고 있습니다. 예수님께서 피신하셨던 것이지요. 그렇다면 왜 피신하셨어야만 했을까? 13:53-58을 보니 예수님께서 마지막으로 계셨던 곳은 바로 예수님의 고향인 나사렛이라고 합니다. 그들은 예수님의 가문과 배경을 알고 있었기에 오히려 예수님을 배척하였지요. 아마도 예수님께서는 그들이 배척을 넘어 예수님을 헤롯에게 넘길 수도 있다고 생각하셨던 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 그렇다면 예수님의 심정은 어떠셨을까요? 정작 고향 사람들은 당신을 배척하고 또, 요한이 죽었다는 소식을 그의 제자로부터 들으셨습니다. 우리가 잘 알다시피 요한은 예수님의 사촌이지요. 또한 예수님께서는 요한을 극찬하셨었습니다. 11:7-15에 아주 잘 나와 있지요. 요한의 죽음은 자신의 길을 예비하는 자이면서 어쩌면 당신이 걸어야 할 길이 어떤 것인지를 보여주는 것이 아니었을까 생각해봅니다. 아마도 외딴 곳으로 혼자 물러가시는 예수님의 마음은 참으로 복잡하지 않았을까요? 그래서 아마도 기도하기 위해서 홀로 사람이 없는 외딴 곳으로 가셨던 것이 아니었을까요? 자 그런데 어떤 일이 일어납니까? 예수님은 지금 배를 타고 이동하고 계십니다. 그런데 사람들이 그 소식을 듣고는 여러 마을에서 나와서 걸어서 예수님을 따라간 것입니다. 배가 물 위를 질러가는 그 거리를 이들은 해안가를 따라서 빙 둘러서 걸어서 따라오는 거에요. 그래서 14절을 보니 예수님께서 도착하셔서 배에서 나오시니 이미 큰 무리가 거기서 예수님을 기다리고 있는 겁니다. 자 예수님께서는 지금 피신을 하시고 계십니다. 그리고 예수님의 마음은 너무 복잡해서 홀로 있으실 시간이 너무 필요해요. 그런데 눈 앞에 사람들이 잔뜩 자신을 기다리고 있어요. 여러분 같으면 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 자신의 안전과 또 자신의 심리적인 필요가 다급한 이 상황에서 자신에게 또다시 무언가를 요구하는 사람들이 구름 떼처럼 나타난다면 사람들이 일로 보이고 피곤하지 않으시겠습니까? 예수님도 저희랑 똑같은 사람인데요. 저 같으면 날 좀 내버려두라고 소리칠 것 같아요. 그런데 예수님은 어떻게 하셨죠? 큰 무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기셨습니다. 지금 자신의 안전이 위협받고 있고 지금 자신의 마음이 너무 슬프고 괴로운데도 예수님은 그것보다 그들을 불쌍히 여기시는 것이 더 크셨던 것입니다. 

First, I want to examine what kind of compassion Jesus has.

Looking at verse 12 from yesterday, it says that John’s disciples buried him and went and told Jesus.

Verse 13, the beginning of today’s passage, says that when Jesus heard this, He withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place—a remote place—by Himself.

Jesus was taking refuge.

Why did He have to take refuge?

According to Matthew 13:53-58, the last place Jesus was staying was His hometown, Nazareth.

Because they knew Jesus’ family and background, they rejected Him.

Perhaps Jesus thought they might not only reject Him but even hand Him over to Herod.

How must Jesus have felt at that time?

His own townspeople rejected Him, and He heard the news of John’s death from John's disciples.

As we well know, John was Jesus' cousin.

Also, Jesus had highly praised John, as seen clearly in Matthew 11:7-15.

John’s death showed him to be the one preparing the way, but perhaps it also showed Jesus the kind of path He Himself would have to walk.

Must not Jesus' heart have been very complicated as He withdrew alone to a desolate place?

Perhaps He went to that remote, uninhabited place to pray alone.

But what happens?

Jesus is currently moving by boat.

However, when the people heard about it, they followed Him on foot from the towns.

While the boat cut across the water, these people walked all the way around the shore to follow Him.

So, looking at verse 14, when Jesus arrived and stepped out of the boat, He saw a great crowd already waiting for Him there.

Now, Jesus is in the middle of taking refuge.

And Jesus’ heart is so heavy that He desperately needs time to be alone.

But a massive crowd is right there in front of Him, waiting.

What would you do in this situation?

If a sea of people appeared, demanding something from you again while your own safety and psychological needs were so urgent, wouldn't they look like mere work and be exhausting?

Jesus was a human being just like us.

If it were me, I think I would have shouted, "Just leave me alone!"

But what did Jesus do?

He saw the great crowd and had compassion on them.

Even though His safety was threatened and His heart was so sad and pained, Jesus' compassion for them was even greater.

            자 예수님께서 이 외딴 곳에서 병자들을 고쳐주시다 보니 벌써 저녁이 되었습니다. 그래서 제자들이 예수님께 말해요. ‘예수님 여기는 외딴곳이고 해도 이미 저물었습니다. 이제 그만 파하시고 각자 마을에 가서 먹을 것을 사먹게 하시지요.’ 여러분 이 제안은 너무나 상식적인 제안이지요. 지극히 정상적이고 당연한 이야기입니다. 그런데 예수님이 갑자기 말도 안되는 말씀을 하세요. ‘아니야 보낼 필요 없어. 니들이 먹을 것을 주어라.’ ‘네? 저희가요? 이 사람들을요?’ 저 같으면 어이가 없어서 한 번 되물을 것 같아요. 그런데 우리는 결말을 압니다. 제자들이 자신들이 가지고 있는 지극히 작은 것을 말씀드리고 예수님께서는 그것을 또 가져오라 하셔서 축도하시고 떼어서 나눠 주시니 다 배불리 먹었다. 열 두 광주리가 남았다. 남자만 오천 명 먹었으니까 대충 만 명 정도 먹었다. 우리 너무 잘 알아요. 그런데 저는 예수님께서 ‘너희가 먹을 것을 주어라’ 라고 말씀하시는 이 말씀이 계속 마음에 걸립니다. 어차피 예수님이 다 하실 거에요. 그리고 그렇게 하셨어요. 그런데 왜 너희가 하라고 말씀하실까? 정작 이들을 불쌍히 여기신 것은 예수님인데 말입니다. 바로 예수님께서 제자들로 하여금 당신이 이들을 불쌍히 여기시는 것처럼 그들도 같은 마음을 갖기 원하셨기 때문이 아닐까 생각해요. 이들은 상식적인 말을 하고 있지만, 예수님께서는 그 상식을 뛰어넘는 당신의 긍휼하심에 이들이 참여하기 원하셨던 것이에요. 나중에 예수님께서 축사하시고 떡을 떼시고 난 후에 그 떡을 제자들에게 주십니다. 제자들이 그 떡을 무리에게 나누어 줘요. 이들을 불쌍히 여기시고 이들을 먹이려 축사하신 분은 예수님이시지만 정작 그 떡을 실제로 무리에게 나누어주는 것은 제자들이었던 것입니다. 예수님의 긍휼하심에 참여한 제자들은 그들의 눈 앞에서 상식을 뛰어넘는 놀라운 기적을 실행하는 자들이 됩니다.

As Jesus was healing the sick in this desolate place, it had already become evening.

So the disciples said to Jesus, "This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." (v. 15)

This suggestion is based on common sense.

It is perfectly normal and natural.

But Jesus suddenly says something that sounds impossible: "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." (v. 16)

"What? Us? Give food to these people?"

If it were me, I would have been so taken aback that I would have asked Him again.

But we know the ending.

The disciples brought the very little they had, and Jesus told them to bring it to Him; He blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, and they all ate and were satisfied.

Twelve baskets were left over.

Since five thousand men were fed, it means roughly ten thousand people ate.

We know this story very well.

However, the words "You give them something to eat" keep weighing on my heart.

Jesus was going to do it all anyway.

And He did do it.

But why did He tell them to do it?

Especially since it was Jesus who had compassion on them.

I believe it is because Jesus wanted the disciples to have the same heart, just as He had compassion for them.

The disciples were speaking from common sense, but Jesus wanted them to participate in His compassion that transcends common sense.

Later, after Jesus gives thanks and breaks the bread, He gives the bread to the disciples.

The disciples then distribute that bread to the crowd.

While it was Jesus who had compassion and prayed to feed them, it was actually the disciples who physically distributed the bread to the crowd.

By participating in Jesus' compassion, the disciples became executors of a miracle that transcended common sense right before their eyes.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님은 이처럼 우리를 불쌍히 여기셨습니다. 긍휼히 여기셨습니다. 예수님의 그 긍휼이 저녁 시간 배를 곯으며 마을로 돌아갈 큰 무리를 배불리 먹이셨습니다. 이것은 상식적으로 말이 안되는 이야기입니다. 오히려 이들을 각자 보내는 것이 이치에 맞는 일이었습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 우리에게 이치에 맞지 않는 당신의 긍휼하심에 초청하십니다. ‘너희가 먹을 것을 주어라’ 말씀하십니다. 여러분은 예수님의 긍휼하심에 참여하시겠습니까? 아니면 여러분의 생각과 이치에 맞는 상식을 따라 살아가시겠습니까? 깊이 생각해보시면 좋을 것 같습니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

I will conclude the message.

In this way, Jesus had compassion on us.

He showed us mercy.

That compassion of Jesus fed a great crowd who would have gone back to their villages hungry in the evening.

Logically, this makes no sense.

Rather, it made more sense to send them each on their way.

But Jesus invites us into His compassion that defies worldly logic.

He says, "You give them something to eat." Will you participate in the compassion of Jesus?

Or will you live according to the common sense that fits your own thoughts and logic?
