13:1 그 날 예수께서 집에서 나가사 바닷가에 앉으시매

13:2 큰 무리가 그에게로 모여 들거늘 예수께서 배에 올라가 앉으시고 온 무리는 해변에 서 있더니

13:3 예수께서 비유로 여러가지를 그들에게 말씀하여 이르시되 씨를 뿌리는 자가 뿌리러 나가서

13:4 뿌릴새 더러는 길 가에 떨어지매 새들이 와서 먹어버렸고

13:5 더러는 흙이 얕은 돌밭에 떨어지매 흙이 깊지 아니하므로 곧 싹이 나오나

13:6 해가 돋은 후에 타서 뿌리가 없으므로 말랐고

13:7 더러는 가시떨기 위에 떨어지매 가시가 자라서 기운을 막았고

13:8 더러는 좋은 땅에 떨어지매 어떤 것은 백 배, 어떤 것은 육십 배, 어떤 것은 삼십 배의 결실을 하였느니라

13:9 귀 있는 자는 들으라 하시니라

1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

13:10 제자들이 예수께 나아와 이르되 어찌하여 그들에게 비유로 말씀하시나이까

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

13:11 대답하여 이르시되 천국의 비밀을 아는 것이 너희에게는 허락되었으나 그들에게는 아니되었나니

13:12 무릇 있는 자는 받아 넉넉하게 되되 무릇 없는 자는 그 있는 것도 빼앗기리라

13:13 그러므로 내가 그들에게 비유로 말하기는 그들이 보아도 보지 못하며 들어도 듣지 못하며 깨닫지 못함이니라

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;

    though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

13:14 이사야의 예언이 그들에게 이루었으니 일렀으되 너희가 듣기는 들어도 깨닫지 못할 것이요 보기는 보아도 알지 못하리라

13:15 이 백성들의 마음이 완악하여져서 그 귀는 듣기에 둔하고 눈은 감았으니 이는 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣고 마음으로 깨달아 돌이켜 내게 고침을 받을까 두려워함이라 하였느니라

14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;

    you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;

    they hardly hear with their ears,

    and they have closed their eyes.

Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

    hear with their ears,

    understand with their hearts

and turn, and I would heal them.’

13:16 그러나 너희 눈은 봄으로, 너희 귀는 들음으로 복이 있도다

13:17 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 많은 선지자와 의인이 너희가 보는 것들을 보고자 하여도 보지 못하였고 너희가 듣는 것들을 듣고자 하여도 듣지 못하였느니라

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

                  오늘 말씀인 13장부터 예수님의 비유들이 펼쳐집니다. 그런데 이상한 것은 예수님께서 무리들에게는 비유로만 말씀하시고 그 비유가 무슨 뜻인지 설명을 해주시지 않습니다. 오죽하면 10절을 보니 제자들이 예수님께 나아와 물었다고 합니다. “어찌하여 그들에게 비유로 말씀하시나이까?” 오늘은 그 이유를 설명하시는 예수님의 말씀을 통해 “귀 있는 자는 들으라”는 제목으로 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

Starting with chapter 13, which we read today, Jesus begins to speak in parables. But there is something quite unusual here: Jesus speaks to the crowds only in parables, without explaining their meaning. It was so puzzling that even the disciples came to Him in verse 10 and asked, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" Today, through Jesus' answer to that very question, I want to share a message titled: "Let Him Who Has Ears, Hear."

                  자, “누구든지 아버지의 뜻대로 하는자가 내 가족이다”라고 말씀하셨기 때문이었을까요? 그 날 예수님께서 집에서 나오셔서 바닷가에 계속 앉아계셨는데 큰 무리가 예수님께로 모여들었다고 합니다. 너무 많은 사람들이 몰려온 나머지 결국 예수님께서 배에 올라가 앉으시고 그 많은 사람들은 말씀을 듣고자 해변에 서 있었다고 하지요. 이렇게 많은 사람들이 모였으니 예수님께서 그동안 가장 잘 다듬었던 설교를 하셔야만 할 것 같은데 이상하게도 예수님께서는 이들에게 아무런 설명도 없는 비유만 말씀해주십니다. 그리고는 그 설교 마지막이 귀 있는 자는 들으라 라는 말씀으로 끝을 맺습니다. 자 오늘 본문의 비유는 우리가 너무나 잘 알고 있는 씨 뿌리는 자의 비유이지요. 내일 본문에 저자 직강, 그러니까 예수님이 직접 해설해주시는 부분이 실려있어요. 그래서 우리는 이 비유가 무슨 뜻인지 너무 잘 알아요. 그런데 만약 여러분이 이 비유를 아무런 설명을 들은 적 없이 처음 들으신다면 여러분은 어떤 느낌을 받으실까요?

                  아마 누군가는 ‘아, 이게 무슨 소리야 된통 못 알아먹겠는데?’ 하면서 신경도 쓰지 않을 것이고. 누군가는 이게 무슨 뜻인가 조금 고민해보다가도 바쁜 일상에 치여 금방 잊어버릴 것입니다. 하지만 누군가는 이 비유를 계속 고민해보고 씨름하고 읊조리고, 결국 이 비유가 가진 뜻을 깨닫는 사람이 있겠죠. 예수님은 아마도 비유를 사용하셔서 듣는 사람으로 하여금 이처럼 하나님 나라에 대한 결정을 스스로 내리도록 하신게 아닌가 싶어요.

1. A Sermon Without an Explanation

Perhaps it was because Jesus had just declared, "Whoever does the will of my Father is my family." That day, He left the house and sat by the sea. A massive crowd gathered around Him—so large that He had to get into a boat and sit down, while the people stood on the beach to listen.

With such a great multitude gathered, you might expect Jesus to deliver His most polished, powerful, and easy-to-understand sermon. But surprisingly, He gives them a parable with no explanation at all. He simply concludes His message by saying, "He who has ears, let him hear."

The parable He shared is one we know very well: the Parable of the Sower. In tomorrow's text, we will see Jesus provide His own commentary on its meaning. Because we’ve heard it so many times, we feel we understand it perfectly. But imagine if you were hearing this for the very first time, without any explanation. How would you feel?

Some might think, "What is He talking about? This makes no sense," and simply walk away. Others might ponder it for a moment but soon forget it, swept up in the busyness of daily life. However, there would be someone who continues to wrestle with it—meditating on it, praying over it—until they finally grasp the truth hidden within. I believe Jesus used parables to force His listeners to make their own decision about the Kingdom of God.

자, 앞에서 말씀드린 것처럼 제자들이 예수님께 왜 비유로 말씀하시냐고 묻습니다. 그 때 예수님께서는 이렇게 대답하십니다. 13절입니다. “그러므로 내가 그들에게 비유로 말하는 것은 그들이 보아도 보지 못하며 들어도 듣지 못하며 깨닫지 못함이니라” 무슨 말입니까? 그들은 예수님을 보아도 예수님이 누구신지 알지 못하고 예수님의 말씀을 듣고도 하늘 나라의 비밀을 깨닫지 못한다는 말씀입니다. 예수님께서 그들로 깨닫지 못하게 하려는 것이 아니라는 것이지요. 그렇다면 그들이 이렇게 깨닫지 못하는 이유는 무엇일까요? 다음 말씀인 14-15절은 이사야서 6:9-10 전체를 인용하고 있는데 그 중 15절은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “이 백성들의 마음이 완악하여져서 그 귀는 듣기에 둔하고 눈은 감았으니 이는 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣고 마음으로 깨달아 돌이켜 내게 고침을 받을까 두려워함이라 하였느니라” 여기에서 ‘완악하다’로 번역된 단어는 ‘둔감하다,’ ‘비만하다’ 라는 뜻입니다. 이스라엘 백성이 하나님의 말씀을 깨닫지 못한 이유는 바로 마음이 둔감해진 상태, 즉 영적 비만과 같은 상태에 놓였기 때문인 것입니다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀과 뜻에 민감하게 반응하지 못하지요. 이는 이미 그들의 마음이 하나님이 아닌 다른 것으로 가득 채워졌기 때문에 하나님의 음성을 들어도 깨닫지 못하는 것입니다. 다른 한가지는 두려움이라고 말하고 있는데요. 어떤 것을 두려워하기 때문일까요? 이들이 만약 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣고 마음으로 깨닫게 되면 자신이 가던 길에서 돌이켜 하나님께 고침을 받을까 두려워하기 때문이라고 말씀하십니다. 마찬가지입니다. 그들은 하나님께로 돌이키고 싶은 마음이 없습니다. 그것을 오히려 두려워 한다고 하고 있습니다. 하나님께서 고쳐주실텐데 그것을 원치 않는 것입니다. 그래서 그들은 귀로 들어도 듣기에 둔하고 그들의 두 눈은 감고 있는 것입니다.

2. The Diagnosis: Spiritual Insensitivity

As I mentioned, the disciples asked why He used parables. Jesus answers in verse 13:

"This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand."

Jesus isn't saying He wants to hide the truth from them. Rather, He is describing their condition. He then quotes Isaiah 6:9-10. Look at verse 15:

"For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them." (ESV)

The word translated as "dull" (or "calloused") in the original language can also mean "to become fat" or "thick." In other words, the people of Israel were in a state of "spiritual obesity." Their hearts had become insensitive to God. They were no longer able to react sensitively to His Word or His will.

Why? Because their hearts were already filled to the brim with things other than God. When your heart is full of worldly desires and self-interest, you can hear the voice of God, but you cannot truly "listen."

Jesus points out another reason: Fear. Why were they closing their eyes? Because they were afraid that if they truly saw, heard, and understood, they would have to "turn"—they would have to repent. They were comfortable in their current path and had no desire to change, even though God was waiting to heal them. They didn't want to be healed if it meant changing their direction.

말씀을 맺습니다. 지금도 예수님께서는 성경을 통해 말씀하십니다. 그러나 우리의 마음 또한 얼마나 쉽게 둔감하여지는지 모릅니다. 우리 주변에는 우리의 관심을 빼앗아 마음을 둔하게 만드는 것들이 너무나 많습니다. 우리가 우리의 마음을 살펴보지 않는다면 이것들은 점점 우리의 귀와 눈의 기능을 마비시켜버리고 말 것입니다. 그때에 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. 귀 있는 자는 들으라. 우리의 눈이 볼 때에, 우리의 귀가 들을 때에 복이 있다 말씀하십니다. 성도 여러분 들으십시오. 그래서 여러분이 말씀을 들으실 때에 그 말씀을 늘 마음으로 깨달아 하나님께 돌이키시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Conclusion]

Even today, Jesus speaks to us through the Scriptures. But we must ask ourselves: how easily do our hearts become dull? We live in a world filled with distractions designed to numb our spiritual senses. If we do not intentionally examine our hearts, our spiritual eyes and ears will eventually lose their function.

In the midst of this, Jesus speaks: "Let him who has ears, hear." He tells us that those whose eyes truly see and whose ears truly hear are "blessed."

Brothers and sisters, I urge you to listen. When you hear the Word, may it not just pass through your ears, but may you understand it with your heart and turn toward God. I pray in the name of the Lord that you would experience the grace of being healed and transformed by His truth.
