12:38 그 때에 서기관과 바리새인 중 몇 사람이 말하되 선생님이여 우리에게 표적 보여 주시기를 원하나이다

[The Sign of Jonah]

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”

12:39 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구하나 선지자 요나의 표적 밖에는 보일 표적이 없느니라

12:40 요나가 밤낮 사흘 동안 큰 물고기 뱃속에 있었던 것 같이 인자도 밤낮 사흘 동안 땅 속에 있으리라

12:41 심판 때에 니느웨 사람들이 일어나 이 세대 사람을 정죄하리니 이는 그들이 요나의 전도를 듣고 회개하였음이거니와 요나보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있으며

12:42 심판 때에 남방 여왕이 일어나 이 세대 사람을 정죄하리니 이는 그가 솔로몬의 지혜로운 말을 들으려고 땅 끝에서 왔음이거니와 솔로몬보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있느니라

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

12:43 더러운 귀신이 사람에게서 나갔을 때에 물 없는 곳으로 다니며 쉬기를 구하되 쉴 곳을 얻지 못하고

12:44 이에 이르되 내가 나온 내 집으로 돌아가리라 하고 와 보니 그 집이 비고 청소되고 수리되었거늘

12:45 이에 가서 저보다 더 악한 귀신 일곱을 데리고 들어가서 거하니 그 사람의 나중 형편이 전보다 더욱 심하게 되느니라 이 악한 세대가 또한 이렇게 되리라

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

12:46 예수께서 무리에게 말씀하실 때에 그의 어머니와 동생들이 예수께 말하려고 밖에 섰더니

12:47 한사람이 예수께 여짜오되 보소서 당신의 어머니와 동생들이 당신께 말하려고 밖에 서 있나이다 하니

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

12:48 말하던 사람에게 대답하여 이르시되 누가 내 어머니며 내 동생들이냐 하시고

12:49 손을 내밀어 제자들을 가리켜 이르시되 나의 어머니와 나의 동생들을 보라

12:50 누구든지 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 하는 자가 내 형제요 자매요 어머니이니라 하시더라

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

                  우리는 어제 예수님께서 바리새인들의 말이 그들 안에 가득한 악을 드러낸다고 말씀하시는 것을 들었습니다. 그들을 비판하시는 예수님께 이들은 표적을 구합니다. 당시 유대인들은 하나님의 능력으로 이스라엘 백성을 해방할 메시아의 표적을 기대했습니다. 그러나 바리새인과 서기관들은 예수님이 그런 인물이 아니라고 생각하고 흠집을 잡아 곤경에 빠드리려고 표적을 구했지요. 이에 예수님께서는 이들은 악한 세대라고 말씀하시며 예수님의 가족은 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 자라고 말씀하십니다. 오늘은 “내 기준이 아닌 하나님의 뜻을 따릅시다” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

Yesterday, we heard Jesus speak about how the words of the Pharisees revealed the evil stored in their hearts. In response to His criticism, they now ask Him for a sign. At that time, many Jews were expecting a messianic sign—a miraculous display of power to liberate Israel from Roman rule. However, the scribes and Pharisees weren't asking because they wanted to believe; they were looking for a reason to trap Him.

Jesus responds by calling them an "evil and adulterous generation" and goes on to define His true family as those who do the will of God. Today, I want to share a message titled: "Following God's Will, Not Our Own Standards."

                  먼저 오늘 말씀의 서기관들과 바리새인들을 함께 살펴보기 원합니다. 이들은 예수님께 표적을 구합니다. 사실 이것은 매우 이상한 일이지요. 마태복음 8-9장에 이미 예수님이야말로 하나님이 보내신 아들이심을 증명하고 있기 때문입니다. 모든 질병과 약함을 고치시고 귀신을 내쫓으시며 바람과 바다도 순종하는 분이 바로 예수님이시기 때문이지요. 오늘 말씀에도 41절에서 “요나보다 더 큰이가 여기 있으며” 42절, “솔로몬보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있느니라.” 라는 말씀은 12:6의 “성전보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있느니라” 라는 말씀과 함께 예수님이야 말로 이스라엘의 가장 위대한 세 기관 – 즉, 제사장, 선지자, 왕 보다 더 크신 분이시며 그 모든 것을 하나로 온전케 하신 분이라는 것을 보여줍니다. 그러나 그들에게는 이렇게 분명한 표적이 보이지 않았습니다. 그들은 자신들이 원하는 표적을 보기 원했지요. 그러자 예수님께서는 “요나의 표적 밖에는 보일 표적이 없다”고 말씀하십니다. 이는 굉장한 아이러니지요. 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 상징하는 요나의 표적이야 말로 그들이 구할 수 있는 가장 위대한 표적이지요. 그러나 그들은 예수님께서 40절에 그 표적의 뜻을 설명해 주시는데도 그것을 이해 할 수 없습니다. 오히려 그들은 그 표적으로 인하여 정죄함을 받을 것입니다. 41절입니다. 니느웨 사람들도 요나의 전도를 듣고 회개하였는데 요나보다 더 큰 예수님께서 말씀하시는데도 이들은 속에 악이 가득하여 회개하지 않는다는 것입니다. 그래서 심판 때에 니느웨 사람들이 너희를 정죄할 것이다.라고 말씀하시는 것이지요. 42절의 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 심판 때에 남방 여왕이 일어나 너희를 정죄할 것이다. 여러분, 니느웨 사람과 남방 여왕은 어떤 사람들입니까? 이방인들입니다. 유대인으로서 율법을 지키고 가르치던 서기관과 바리새인들에게 너희들이 사람 취급도 하지 않는 이방인들에게 너희가 정죄함을 받으리라는 말씀인 것입니다.

1. The Blindness of Demanding Our Own Signs

First, let’s look at the scribes and Pharisees. They asked Jesus, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." Frankly, this is a very strange request. In Matthew chapters 8 and 9, Jesus had already proven He was the Son of God sent by the Father. He healed every disease, cast out demons, and even the wind and the sea obeyed Him!

In today’s passage, Jesus says in verse 41, "something greater than Jonah is here," and in verse 42, "something greater than Solomon is here." These statements, along with verse 6—"something greater than the temple is here"—show that Jesus is greater than the three most important institutions of Israel: the Priest, the Prophet, and the King. He is the One who fulfills and perfects them all.

Yet, they were blind to these clear signs. Why? Because they only wanted to see the signs they had defined. Jesus tells them:

"An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." (v. 39)

This is a powerful irony. The "sign of Jonah"—symbolizing the death and resurrection of Jesus—is the greatest sign they could ever receive. But even as Jesus explains its meaning in verse 40, they cannot understand it. In fact, that very sign will become their condemnation.

Jesus points out that the people of Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah, but the Pharisees—filled with inner evil—refuse to repent even though someone greater than Jonah is standing right in front of them. Therefore, Jesus says the people of Nineveh and the Queen of the South will rise up at the judgment and condemn this generation. Think about who these people were: they were Gentiles. Jesus is telling the Jewish leaders, who looked down on Gentiles, that the very people they despised would be the ones to judge them.

                  예수님은 또한 당신을 영접하기를 거부한 이들을 더러운 귀신 들린 사람에 비유합니다. 이들은 율법을 지키고 종교 행위를 함으로 자신의 삶을 깨끗하게 하려고 했습니다. 44절의 “그 집이 비고 청소되고 수리 되었거늘”이라는 말은 그 집이 깨끗하게 청소되고 꾸며져 더 이상 어떤 것에도 사로잡히지 않은 여유로운 상태였다는 말입니다. 그러나 예수님을 믿고 성령을 중심에 모시지 않은 채 여유를 부린다면 그들은 결국 전보다 더욱 심하게 더러운 영에 사로잡히게 된다는 것입니다.

2. The Danger of an "Empty" Life (Verses 43-45)

Jesus then compares those who refuse to receive Him to a person possessed by an unclean spirit. These leaders tried to clean up their lives through legalism and religious rituals.

In verse 44, Jesus describes a house as "empty, swept, and put in order." This represents a life that has been "cleaned up" but remains vacant. If you try to live a moral life without truly believing in Jesus and without the Holy Spirit dwelling in your heart, you are in a dangerous state of "spiritual neutrality." Jesus warns that the unclean spirit will return with seven other spirits more evil than itself, making the final state of that person worse than the first. Morality without Christ is just a vacuum waiting to be filled by something worse.

                  그렇다면 어떻게 해야 합니까? 예수님께서 말씀하실 때에 한 사람이 예수님의 어머니와 형제들이 예수님께 말하려고 밖에 서있다고 말하였습니다. 그 때에 예수님께서 반문하셨지요. 누가 내 어머니이며 동생들이냐? 누가 진정한 하나님의 가족이냐? 49절을 보니 예수님께서 손을 내밀어 자신의 제자들을 어루만지시며 이들이 나의 가족이다 라고 말씀하십니다. 그런데 거기에만 그치지 않으시고 50절의 말씀을 통하여 당신의 가족에 대한 정의를 확장하시지요. 50절 함께 같이 읽어보겠습니다. “누구든지 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 하는 자가 내 형제요 자매요 어머니이니라 하시더라” 아멘. 나의 기준, 내가 만족할 만한 표적을 구하는 것이 아니라 하나님의 뜻을 따르는 것. 그것이 바로 악한 세대를 떠나 하나님의 가족이 되는 길인 것입니다.

3. Who is the True Family of God? (Verses 46-50)

So, what is the solution? While Jesus was speaking, someone told Him that His mother and brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to Him. Jesus responded with a question: "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"

In verse 49, He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers!" But He didn't stop there. He expanded the definition of His family to include all of us. Let’s read verse 50 together:

"For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." (ESV)

This is the core of today’s message. Being part of God's family isn't about seeking a sign that satisfies our own criteria or standards. It is about following the will of God. That is the path to leaving the "evil generation" behind and becoming a true member of the household of God.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 우리는 날마다 충분한 은혜를 누리는데도 “확실한 증거를 보여주시면 믿겠다” 라면서 이미 보여주신 하나님의 표적들에 흐린 눈을 하고 있지는 않습니까? 내 기준, 내가 만족할 만한 표적이 아닌 하나님의 뜻을 구하고 그 뜻에 따라 행하는 삶을 살기 원합니다. 그래서 깨끗하게 청소되고 꾸며진 우리 마음이 예수 그리스도를 삶의 주인으로 모시고 성령으로 늘 충만하기를 기도합니다.

[Conclusion]

Brothers and sisters, we experience God's abundant grace every single day. Yet, do we sometimes close our eyes to the signs He has already given us, saying, "I’ll believe if You just show me one more clear piece of evidence"?

Let us stop seeking signs that fit our own standards. Instead, let us seek God’s will and live according to it. I pray that our hearts—once "swept and put in order"—will not remain empty, but will be filled with Jesus Christ as our Lord and be constantly overflowing with the Holy Spirit.
