10:34 내가 세상에 화평을 주러 온 줄로 생각하지 말라 화평이 아니요 검을 주러 왔노라

10:35 내가 온 것은 사람이 그 아버지와, 딸이 어머니와, 며느리가 시어머니와 불화하게 하려 함이니

10:36 사람의 원수가 자기 집안 식구리라

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,

    a daughter against her mother,

a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—

36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

10:37 아버지나 어머니를 나보다 더 사랑하는 자는 내게 합당하지 아니하고 아들이나 딸을 나보다 더 사랑하는 자도 내게 합당하지 아니하며

10:38 또 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르지 않는 자도 내게 합당하지 아니하니라

10:39 자기 목숨을 얻는 자는 잃을 것이요 나를 위하여 자기 목숨을 잃는 자는 얻으리라

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

10:40 너희를 영접하는 자는 나를 영접하는 것이요 나를 영접하는 자는 나 보내신 이를 영접하는 것이니라

10:41 선지자의 이름으로 선지자를 영접하는 자는 선지자의 상을 받을 것이요 의인의 이름으로 의인을 영접하는 자는 의인의 상을 받을 것이요

10:42 또 누구든지 제자의 이름으로 이 작은 자 중 하나에게 냉수 한 그릇이라도 주는 자는 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 그 사람이 결단코 상을 잃지 아니하리라 하시니라

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

세상 속에 거하며 살아가는 우리에게 예수님의 제자로서 선택이 요구될 때가 있습니다. 그것은 바로 ‘세상을 택할지’, ‘예수님을 택할지’입니다. 세상과의 갈등을 피하고 타협하는 순간 우리는 예수님과 합당하지 못한 자가 됩니다. 근데 심지어 그 갈등 관계의 초점을 가족에게 둡니다. 가족과 예수님 사이에서 예수님을 선택해야 하는 순간이 온다는 것입니다. 이런 우리의 갈등을 예견하신 예수님께서는 오늘 본문을 통해 확실한 우선순위를 정해주십니다. 그리고 힘들더라도 이런 삶을 사는 제자는 소중한 대우를 받을 가치가 있는 존재임을 알려주십니다.

As we live our lives in the midst of the world, there are moments when a choice is required of us as disciples of Jesus. That choice is whether we will choose the world or choose Jesus. The moment we try to avoid conflict with the world and compromise, we become people who are no longer worthy of Jesus. What is even more striking is that Jesus places the focus of this conflict within the family. A time will come when we must choose Jesus over our family. Foreseeing this inner struggle, Jesus establishes clear priorities through today’s passage and teaches us that even though such a life is difficult, those who live as His disciples are worthy of precious honor.

1)    예수님이 오신 이유

오늘 본문의 시작이 심상치 않습니다. 34절에 “내가 세상에 화평을 주러 온 줄로 생각하지 말라 화평이 아니요 검을 주러 왔노라” 이 말씀은 10장 12절에 제자들에게 평안을 전하라는 사명을 주셨던 것과 마치 정반대되는 것 같습니다. 이때 ‘검’은 무기가 아니라, ‘진리의 말씀’을 뜻합니다. 히브리서 4장 12절 말씀이 생각나는데요. “하나님의 말씀은 살아 있고 활력이 있어 좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영과 및 관절과 골수를 찔러 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단하나니 (히 4:12).” 이렇듯 말씀은 사탄의 거짓과 망상을 진리와 구별하여 드러내는 일을 합니다. 이러한 일은 세상 입장에서는 매우 불쾌하고 부담스럽지 않을 수 없습니다. 그러니 필연적으로 복음이 있는 곳에는 불화와 박해가 따라옵니다. 그리고 예수님께서는 그 불화가 35절에 “내가 온 것은 사람이 그 아버지와, 딸이 어머니와, 며느리가 시어머니와 불화하게 하려 함이니”와 같이 가족간에 있을 거라고 하십니다.

1)    The Reason Jesus Came

The opening of today’s passage is striking. In verse 34, Jesus says, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” This seems to contradict the mission He gave His disciples earlier in chapter 10, verse 12, where He told them to proclaim peace. Here, however, the “sword” does not refer to a weapon, but to the word of truth. This reminds us of Hebrews 4:12: “The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” In this way, the Word exposes and separates Satan’s lies and illusions from the truth. From the world’s perspective, this is uncomfortable and burdensome. Therefore, wherever the gospel is present, conflict and persecution inevitably follow. Jesus goes on to say in verse 35 that this conflict will even occur within families: “For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

2)    합당한 제자로서 요구되는 것들

예수님께서는 37절에 정확하게 알려주십니다. 누구보다 가족을 예수님보다 더 사랑하는 자는 제자로 합당하지 않습니다. 이러한 명령은 또한 십계명 중 ‘네 부모를 공경하라’는 말씀에 어긋나는 것 같습니다. 오해하지 말아야 할 것은 이것이 가족을 사랑하지 말라는 뜻이 아니라는 것입니다. 다만 예수님에 대한 사랑이 그 무엇보다 커야 한다는 제자도의 근본 원칙을 강조하는 표현입니다. 또한 38절 “또 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르지 않는 자도 내게 합당하지 아니하니라” 이 구절의 번역이 매끄럽지 못하다는 지적이 있습니다. 마치 ‘십자가를 지고 있으면서 예수님을 따르지 않는 자’라는 표현 같습니다. 그 대신 “자기 십자가를 받지 않고 내 뒤를 따르는 자는 내게 합당하지 않다”라고하는 번역이 더 원래의 뜻에 가깝습니다. 영어 성경도 “and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me (NIV)”로 표현하고 있습니다. 즉 자기가 마땅히 져야 할 십자가는 받아 매지 않은 채 주님의 뒤를 따르기만 하는 자는 옳지 않다는 것입니다. 그리고 39절, 이순신 장군의 필사즉생(必死則生) 필생즉사(必生則死)의 정신이 떠오르는데요. “죽고자 하면 살 것이요, 살고자 하면 죽을 것이다.” 그러나 예수님의 말씀과 가장 큰 차이는 무엇입니까? 바로 “나를 위하여”라는 문구입니다. 즉 제자의 삶은 오직 예수님을 위하여 박해와 고난을 감당하는 삶입니다.

2) What Is Required of a Worthy Disciple

Jesus makes this very clear in verse 37. Anyone who loves family more than Jesus is not worthy to be His disciple. At first glance, this may seem to contradict the commandment to “honor your father and mother.” However, this does not mean that we are commanded not to love our families. Rather, it emphasizes the foundational principle of discipleship: our love for Jesus must surpass all else. In verse 38, Jesus says, “Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” Some have pointed out that this translation can feel awkward, as if it refers to someone who is carrying a cross but not following Jesus. A closer rendering would be, “Anyone who does not accept their cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” The English Bible reflects this clearly: “and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me” (NIV). In other words, those who follow Jesus without accepting the cross they are meant to bear are not true disciples. Verse 39 may remind us of Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s famous saying: “If you seek to live, you will die; if you seek to die, you will live.” Yet the key difference in Jesus’ words is the phrase, “for my sake.” The life of a disciple is one that endures persecution and suffering solely for Jesus.

3)    제자들을 섬기는 자들을 위한 상

이러한 어렵고도 좁은 길을 걸어가야 하는 제자들을 위로하듯이 예수님은 제자들을 영접하고 섬기는 자들에게는 영광스러운 상이 내려질 것임을 알려주십니다. 40절에서 제자들을 영접하는 행위는 곧 예수님과 하나님 아버지를 영접하는 것과 동일한 의미를 갖습니다. 예수님께서는 제자들을 ‘선지자’, ‘의인’과 같은 영광스러운 지위로 인정하시며 이러한 자들을 영접하는 자들은 제자들이 받을 상을 그들도 같이 받을 것을 41절에 약속하십니다. 또한 42절에서 예수님은 제자들을 ‘작은 자’로 말씀하십니다. 비록 하늘에서 내려오는 영광은 크지만 세상적인 눈으로 바라봤을 때 제자들은 작은 자들이었습니다. 이런 작은 취급을 받는 제자들에게 단순한 물 한 잔은 그렇게 큰 대접같아 보이지 않습니다. 그러나 지리적 배경을 생각했을 때 팔레스타인 지역에서 냉수 한 그릇은 생명력 있는 환대의 상징입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서는 이러한 섬김을 결코 가볍게 여기지 않으시고 그 진심어린 환대를 기억하사 상을 주실 것을 약속하십니다.

예수님을 따르는 길은 절대 쉬운 길이 아닙니다. 세상과의 불화와 갈등을 피할 수 없습니다. 오늘 새벽 내 안에 예수님보다 내가 더 사랑하는 것들이 무엇이 있는지 살펴보길 원합니다. 그리고 오직 예수님만을 최우선으로 두기로 결단할 때, 비록 세상과는 화평을 잃을지라도 내 영혼은 영원한 평안을 누릴 것을 확신합니다. 그리고 우리가 서로 사랑하고 섬길 때 천국의 상을 받으실 여러분들을 축복합니다.

3) The Reward for Those Who Serve the Disciples

As if to comfort those who must walk this difficult and narrow path, Jesus promises a glorious reward for those who welcome and serve His disciples. In verse 40, welcoming the disciples is equated with welcoming Jesus Himself—and God the Father. Jesus acknowledges His disciples with honorable titles such as “prophets” and “righteous ones,” and in verse 41 He promises that those who receive them will share in their reward. In verse 42, Jesus refers to His disciples as “little ones.” Though they receive great glory from heaven, in the eyes of the world they are small and insignificant. To such overlooked disciples, even a simple cup of cold water may seem insignificant. Yet in the geographical context of Palestine, a cup of cold water symbolizes life-giving hospitality. God does not take such service lightly. He remembers sincere acts of welcome and promises to reward them. Following Jesus is never an easy path. We cannot avoid conflict and tension with the world. This morning, I invite you to examine your heart and ask what you may love more than Jesus. As you decide to place Jesus above all else, even if you lose peace with the world, I bless you to receive eternal peace for your soul and heavenly rewards in the kingdom of God.
