12:1 그 때에 예수께서 안식일에 밀밭 사이로 가실새 제자들이 시장하여 이삭을 잘라 먹으니

12:2 바리새인들이 보고 예수께 말하되 보시오 당신의 제자들이 안식일에 하지 못할 일을 하나이다

1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

12:3 예수께서 이르시되 다윗이 자기와 그 함께 한 자들이 시장할 때에 한 일을 읽지 못하였느냐

12:4 그가 하나님의 전에 들어가서 제사장 외에는 자기나 그 함께 한 자들이 먹어서는 안 되는 진설병을 먹지 아니하였느냐

12:5 또 안식일에 제사장들이 성전 안에서 안식을 범하여도 죄가 없음을 너희가 율법에서 읽지 못하였느냐

12:6 내가 너희에게 이르노니 성전보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있느니라

12:7 나는 자비를 원하고 제사를 원하지 아니하노라 하신 뜻을 너희가 알았더라면 무죄한 자를 정죄하지 아니하였으리라

12:8 인자는 안식일의 주인이니라 하시니라

3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

12:9 거기에서 떠나 그들의 회당에 들어가시니

9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

12:11 예수께서 이르시되 너희 중에 어떤 사람이 양 한 마리가 있어 안식일에 구덩이에 빠졌으면 끌어내지 않겠느냐

12:12 사람이 양보다 얼마나 더 귀하냐 그러므로 안식일에 선을 행하는 것이 옳으니라 하시고

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

12:15 예수께서 아시고 거기를 떠나가시니 많은 사람이 따르는지라 예수께서 그들의 병을 다 고치시고

God’s Chosen Servant

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. 16 He warned them not to tell others about him. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

12:18 보라 내가 택한 종 곧 내 마음에 기뻐하는 바 내가 사랑하는 자로다 내가 내 영을 그에게 줄 터이니 그가 심판을 이방에 알게 하리라

12:19 그는 다투지도 아니하며 들레지도 아니하리니 아무도 길에서 그 소리를 듣지 못하리라

12:20 상한 갈대를 꺾지 아니하며 꺼져가는 심지를 끄지 아니하기를 심판하여 이길 때까지 하리니

12:21 또한 이방들이 그 이름을 바라리라 함을 이루려 하심이니라

18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,

    the one I love, in whom I delight;

I will put my Spirit on him,

    and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

19 He will not quarrel or cry out;

    no one will hear his voice in the streets.

20 A bruised reed he will not break,

    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,

till he has brought justice through to victory.

21     In his name the nations will put their hope.”

오늘 본문에는 두 개의 사건이 등장합니다. 하나는 안식일에 제자들이 밀밭에서 이삭을 잘라 먹은 사건이고, 다른 하나는 안식일에 예수께서 한쪽 손 마른 자를 고치신 사건입니다. 이 사건들을 중심으로 예수님은 바리새인들과 그 유명한 안식일 논쟁을 벌입니다. 우리는 이 안식일 논쟁을 통하여 안식일의 참의미와 나가서 율법의 참의미에 대해서 배울 수 있습니다. 또한 안식일을 새롭게 재정의 하시는 예수는 누구인지에 대한 것을 알 수 있습니다.

Today’s passage presents two distinct incidents: the disciples picking and eating heads of grain on the Sabbath, and Jesus healing a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath. Through these events, Jesus engages in the famous "Sabbath Controversy" with the Pharisees. From this debate, we learn the true meaning of the Sabbath, the ultimate purpose of the Law, and—most importantly—the identity of Jesus, who redefines the Sabbath.

두 가지 사건

사건1. 제자들이 안식일에 이삭을 잘라 먹음

그 때에는 밀을 추수할 시기입니다. 그러니까 유월절과 밀추수를 기념하는 칠칠절(오순절) 사이 4월, 어느 안식일입니다. 태양력으로는 5~6월에 해당하는 시기입니다. 렌스키는 곡식이 익었다는 기사로 보아, 주께서 죽으시기 일년 전, 유월절이 가까웠을 때, 곧 4월이 틀림 없다 라고 해석했습니다.

밀밭 사이를 가는데 제자들이 시장하여 이삭을 잘라 손으로 비벼서 먹은 것입니다. 남의 밭에서 이삭을 잘라 먹는 것은 율법이 허용하는 은혜의 법입니다(신 23:25). 문제는 그 날이 안식일이었다는 것입니다. 하나님은 그저 안식일을 기억하여 지키라고 말씀만 하셨습니다. 하지만 바리새인들은 안식일에 대한 금기사항을234개(39개 조항X 6개)의 세부 조항으로 만들었습니다. 조항에 의하면 손으로 이삭을 비비는 것(눅 6:1)은 타작에 해당하므로 안식일을 범했다는 것입니다.

I. Two Incidents

1. The Disciples Picking Grain (vv. 1–8) This occurred during the wheat harvest, likely between Passover and Pentecost (April–June). The disciples were hungry as they walked through the fields, so they picked heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.

The Law of Grace: According to Deuteronomy 23:25, eating grain from a neighbor’s field was legally permitted.

The Pharisaic Restriction: While God simply commanded to "remember the Sabbath," the Pharisees created 234 detailed sub-regulations (39 categories × 6). By their standards, rubbing grain in one’s hands constituted "threshing," making it a violation of the Sabbath.

사건2. 예수께서 안식일에 손 마른 자를 고치심

마태는 이 사건이 마치 같은 날 있었던 것처럼 기록하고 있지만, 누가는 정확하게 또 다른 안식일이라고 밝힙니다(눅 6:6). 또한 마태는 그저 한쪽 손 마른 사람이라고 한 반면에 헬라인 의사인 누가는 오른손 마른 사람이라고 정확하게 기록하고 있습니다. 오른손 사용하지 못하는 자의 삶에 대해서는 얼마전 주일예배 설교에서 자세하게 설명 했습니다. 

그런데 바리새인들은 이 불쌍한 사람을 이용하여 예수님을 고발하려고 안식일에 병 고치는 것이 옳은지를 묻습니다. 여기서 바리새인들의 질문은 안식일에 병을 고치는 것이 합법적인가? 라는 의미의 질문입니다.

왜냐하면 그들의 유전은 생명을 다투는 병이 아니고서는 안식일에 의료행위는 금지되었기 때문입니다. 이에 예수님은 손 마른 자에게, 손을 내밀라고 말씀 하시자 그의 손이 회복됩니다. 심지어 말씀만으로 고치셨기에 그들의 유전에 어긋나는 불법적 의료행위도 아닙니다.

2. Healing the Withered Hand (vv. 9–14)

While Matthew records this as if it happened on the same day, Luke clarifies it was "on another Sabbath" (Luke 6:6). The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking if it was "lawful" to heal on the Sabbath.

The Legal Trap: Their tradition prohibited medical acts on the Sabbath unless a life was in immediate danger.

The Response: Jesus commanded the man to stretch out his hand, and it was restored. Since He healed solely through His word, He did not even perform a physical "action" that could be technically classified as illegal labor.

두 가지 답변

오늘 본문에서 중요한 것은 예수님의 답변입니다. 두 사건은 다르지만 본질적으로는 같은 문제입니다.

안식일의 논쟁이지만, 율법 전체에 대한 해석과 율법을 대하는 태도에 관한 지혜입니다.

답변1. 제사보다 자비, 율법보다 사랑

7절 나는 자비를 원하고 제사를 원하지 아니하노라(호6:6) 말씀을 인용하십니다. 자비는 히브리어로는 헤세드, 헬라어로는 엘레오스로 사랑을 의미합니다. 제사의 핵심인 하나님에 대한 사랑과 이웃에 대한 사랑이 결여된 제사는 무의미한 것입니다. 예수님은 첫 번째 예로 다윗과 그의 부하들이 제사장들만 먹는 진설병을 먹은 사건(삼상 21:1~6)을 듭니다. 바리새인 뿐 아니라 모든 유대인이 숭배하는 다윗 왕의 불법적 행위를 말함으로 당황스럽게 합니다. 원칙은 제사장들만 먹는 것이지만, 생명이 위급한 때에 율법은 더 큰 사랑을 택할 수 있는 것입니다. 자비와 제사가 충돌할 때는 언제든지 자비가 우선한다는 것입니다. 자비가 율법보다 상위법 입니다. 이것을 확장하면 율법보다 사랑이 상위법이라는 사실을 보여주는 것입니다.

손 마른 자를 고치신 사건 역시 마찬가지 원리입니다. 공동체에서 배제된 이 불쌍한 자를 하루 빨리 회복 시키는 것은 얼마나 중요하고 급한 일입니까? 바리새인들의 소시오패스 같은 기질을 예수님은 안식일에 구덩이에 빠진 양 비유를 통해서 드러내십니다. 사람이 양보다 귀하다. 그러므로 안식일에 선을 행하는 것이 옳다는 논리를 펴십니다(12). 다윗의 진설병 사건과 손 마른 자 사건을 통해서 첫 번째로 알려주시는 교훈은 제사보다 자비를, 율법보다 사랑을 입니다.

II. Two Answers

Though the incidents differ, Jesus’ answers address the same core issue: the correct interpretation of the Law and the heart behind it.

1. Mercy Over Sacrifice, Love Over Law

Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6: "I desire mercy and not sacrifice."

Mercy (Hesed/Eleos): A sacrifice devoid of love for God and neighbor is meaningless.

The Example of David: Jesus cites when David and his men ate the Bread of the Presence (1 Sam 21), which was legally reserved for priests. By highlighting the "illegal" act of the revered King David, Jesus points out that when mercy and ritual conflict, mercy takes precedence. * Valuing Life: Jesus exposes the Pharisees' coldness by asking if they would rescue a sheep from a pit on the Sabbath. If a sheep is worth saving, how much more a human being? Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.

답변2. 성전(율법)보다 크신 이

두 번째로 주시는 교훈은 5절입니다. 제사장들은 안식일에 엄청 일합니다. 하지만 그것은 노동이 아닙니다.

성막 또는 성전 안에 있기 때문입니다. 여기서 예수님은 한 단계 더 나갑니다. 성전보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있다(6), 인자는 안식일의 주인이니라(8). 예수님은 율법을 주신 분이시요, 하나님이라는 것입니다. 이것은 폭탄선언입니다. 이에 그들은 예수를 죽이려고 결심합니다(14). 그들은 성전에 대한 자부심이 있었지만,

참성전이 무엇인지를 몰랐습니다.

칼빈은 그들은 자신의 욕구가 차지 않으면 하나님이라도 죽이려고 덤비는 자라고 했습니다. 렌스키는 성막과 성전은 모두 하나님이시요 사람이신 예수님의 상징과 모형에 불과하였다고 했습니다. 그러니까 예수(은혜) 안에 있었던 다윗이 진설병을 먹는 것은 은혜입니다. 예수와 함께 하던 제자들이 안식일에 이삭을 먹는 것은 아무 문제가 아닌 것입니다.

2. One Greater Than the Temple

In verse 5, Jesus notes that priests work extensively in the Temple on the Sabbath, yet they are blameless because they are within the Temple. He then makes a bombshell declaration:

"I tell you that something greater than the temple is here." (v. 6) "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." (v. 8)

Jesus is the Lawgiver and God Himself. This claim was so radical that the Pharisees immediately began plotting to kill Him. As Calvin noted, these men were so driven by their own desires that they would attempt to kill even God if He did not satisfy them.

예수 안에 있으면 모든 것이 가능합니다. 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유케 하리라고 하셨습니다. 그 진리는 바로 예수이십니다! 성전보다 더 크신 이를 확장 해석하면 율법보다 더 크신 이입니다. 율법보다 사랑이고, 율법보다 예수입니다.

Conclusion: Freedom in Christ

If you are in Jesus, all things are possible. He said, "The truth will set you free," and that Truth is Jesus Himself.

To say He is "greater than the Temple" means He is greater than the Law. Love is higher than the Law, and Jesus is the fulfillment of that love. When we abide in His grace, the rigid legalism of the world loses its power, and we find true rest.
